  • I'm currently working on LS swapping this 1990 Jaguar XJ-S. While the engine, transmission, and driveshaft are out of the car, it's a great time to make sure the rear subframe is in good mechanical condition and replace common wear parts. I replaced all four struts and had my original springs powder coated since the paint was peeling off.

Nice work. I have the entire case and assembly (1973 XJ-6) separated and installed in my 1957 Chevy Step Side Truck..

I’ve been told that it’s the suspension that really distinguishes Jags from other cars. Mahalo for this detailed look at the suspension and rear brakes of your XJS. Will be looking forward to seeing the LS installation!!!

When you’re dropping the rear suspension, it’s much easier in and out to undo the nut on the bottom of the mount, rather than the through-bolts that hold the mounts to the body structure.

Years ago I worked as an auto restorer who specialized in British cars. Loads of MG, Triumph, Austin Healey and the like were taken in derelict and left as polished gems. We worked on a number of XJ models and I loved the XJS. The rear suspension is so modern in how it was packaged. Inboard disc brakes are a treat to service...

😂 anything else but change the rear pads and I always remove the hole IRS, hardest piece to loosen is always the rear muffler (especially on xj, Xjs are easer hence you can loosen the clamp in front of the IRS and drop everything.)

Good work! In case you aren't aware, sometimes the rubber flexi hoses swell inside when they are old, allowing fluid under pressure to enter the caliper, but not return. This can give the appearance of a stuck caliper.

Actually the half shafts also act as the upper suspension arm.

The XJ-S is from the start to the end, was and still is my fav pic of British Sunday GT Summer's day motoring. It's just surprising so many leave their cars outside here in the PNW. I would love to own one when I get my own warehouse style garage. But till then? Not going to happen. These old sassy girls need some Tender loving care from being left out in the cold to long.
A full off restoration at least for me would be in order along with multiple upgrades/Downgrades.
What is surprising is that with the proper fitted carby, they really do well on MPG. (Look up Lawnmower carb on Ford for the VIdeo) Once you get past all the weakpoints? And cost cutting from the Leyland years? Its an amazing machine.
Then you have to find the Lukas, the prince of Darkness. And His Pal Bendi who likes to always spark up a good time at the wrong time.
The amazing part is? Its actually a REALLY light body shell. And the few models in the U.K. that came with the 6 and a stick shift are a JOY to drive!
Some really good Headwork, and some extra care to Lubrication , block stiffening. Rods & fuel upgrades really make this powerplant a 500 daily driver monster motor with GOBS of low end twist.
Some owners have went so far to make their V-12 engines almost silent at Idle. A real testament to its turbine smoothness.
Take good care of her. She will love you for it.

Save the tires. They will be what you run when you first get the car going. Do some easy drive on it to be sure everything works then get the cameras ready and smoke 'em. The shields for the universal joint looks like it has a hole for the grease fitting. I don't think you mentioned it but I would guess that having the exhaust out of the way also helped. Now I know why hot rodder's like Jaguar rears. Not exactly simple but it does come out as a unit.

    • @AHFixIt
      @AHFixIt  Před 2 lety

Yeah, I didn't mention it, but I did grease the joints while I had easy access and the absense of exhaust pipes helped. I understand the hot rodder thing now too. Really cool design

So shocking that US stands dont have Safety pins. For the sake of a 50c pin its madness.

What is sad is the owners of these cars trusted American mechanics that thought they knew what they were doing.
Mechanics that trained and had experience were very few.
    I own a 1992 XJS V-12 rag top
and recently a mechanic attempted to bleed the brakes.
He replaced the D.O.T. 4 with 3 and later I found out he didnt know a thing about the anti lock brake booster mechanism.

Uuhh, not listening to the audio, but watching the odd rear suspension and that heat insulation sock on the e-brake cable sheath may well be asbestos.... if the car is pre 78 or so... I'd treat it like that and wet it down with water and bag it and replace it with some modern rock wool product... just sayin' , fascinating the way Jaguar did that, they were really trying, weren't they?

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any more......:-(((

Will not happen. Electric car production cannot replace fast enough. UK has postponed ban on new sales, and cannot avoid ICE remaining.

I’m here because I’m doing rear calipers on one of these beasts and I’ve tried to remove the rivers Side calipers but couldn’t get it out. The manual is not that great for doing the calipers so I guess I’m pulling the rear to do them🤦🏻‍♂️
Really starting to hate this car.
This thing has been in storage for over ten years.
I’ve spent hours doing ALL fuel lines fuel pump getting the injectors to spit fuel tune up belts ect ect ect
    What a awful design
