A while ago had someone come into my pet store talking about how they “spoiled” their Syrian, Peanut, because they got this cage.. I explained how bad this cage is- and how he would probably love more space. They kept talking about how they spoiled him and I’m the only person who disagrees with them.. I pissed them off but I guess what I said resonated with them and they ended up coming back in and asking me to teach them how to make a bin cage because he started biting. Peanut is much happier now, and he no longer bites.

Savanna R. Your really good to educate them people. My local pet shop does not tell people what sizes. I saw people buying the smallest cage ever and I tried to tell them it was too small, I’m only 11 years old and they wouldn’t believe me.

Totally agree, I get pissed off when people say snakes only grow to the size of the enclosure and don't need the space grrr. My bearded dragon was kept in a 3ft for 5 years before I got him and has MBD in he's hips. he's now in a 6ft and loves to waddle around he's enclosure chasing locusts 😁

    • @Abby-um5rd

@@flame-29936 me too. I would never put a beardie in anything under 70 gallons. I have one and I am currently working towards getting him a 120 because his 70 is starting to be a little small! I have talked to people online , one in particular that legit said "I wouldn't have gotten a beardie if they needed over a 40 gallon tank" and argued with me for a solid half hour. Eventually they saw how small it actually was next to a adult, I think they upgraded to a 36x24x24 (90 gallons) the next week. highly annoying but time well spent. The worst is when I saw someone with (I kid you not) had a subadult central bearded dragon in a ten gallon. Reptiles totally don't grow to the size of the enclosure, that lizard was proof. Even with improper care all the way around, this beardie could touch both sides of the skinny way with the tail even bending around the corner.

@@Abby-um5rd That's terrible, I'm glad you managed to convince them. I'm not sure how many gallons my viv is but it's the size of a single bed. I work with a group of friends that search sites like shpock, gumtree etc and give people advice on alternative ways to give away their animals (adoption shelters) or remind them to at least do home checks, advise different enclosures or alternative uses for small ones etc and try to do it in a peaceful/educational/non confrontational way .... but occasionally you meet that one guy that breaks the chains on your mood swing and can't help but argue back 😂 especially when you can clearly see the animal suffering 😟

I know you can make mistakes with pet owning, but this isn't a mistake anymore. I had 4 hamsters in my life, and I know I made mistakes too, but even my first enclosure for them was not as tiny and cruel as this one.
With my last two hamsters I finally improved a lot!
    Cage was 60 x 120 x 60 cm (~ 24 x 74 x 24 inches) in size, bedding was 17-20 cm (~ 7-8 inches) deep and their wheel had a 40 cm (~16 inches) diameter.
I never was that tiny as those bad cages.. and I'm so glad that even with only a little knowledge at the beginning (back then you wouldn't really find infos online and had to mostly trust employees....) I wouldn't even think of buying something so ridiculous and cruel, wouldn't like to use plastic either.
I'm glad nowadays there a people who try to spread awareness, like you and many others, pet stores started selling more friendly and realistic - in size - cages (at least in my country) and so on... still sad that there a still such products to buy.. and that people really buy those things and think nothing of it.

I live in the UK and it’s only in the 2nd half of 2022 that I’ve noticed a bigger selection of appropriate cages in pet shops like pets at home and it took ages but I’m glad the change has finally happened also when I bought my current hamster from there recently (ik ik it’s bad but our pet shop breeders are better than the US I swear) and the employee selling it to me checked how big my cage was (it’s 850sq inches so quite big dw) and made me buy a 12” wheel (I needed one anyway since my last was a robo and she only had an 8”) before I even got to see the hamsters which I thought was amazing. The employee was like a younger munchie and is a big advocate for proper hamster care which is also amazing!

This cage has been on the market for a very long time. I had a cage just like it for my syrian back in 2008. We upgraded her to a larger one eventually but even that one wasn't great. I feel so bad now that I look back on it. The hamsters I had afterwards were dwarves and had larger cages, but they still weren't as big as they should have been. I'm planning on adopting a hamster soon after about 5-6 years of not having one and I've bought a 660 square inch terrarium for them along with a 12 inch wheel. Videos like this have been really informative, there was so much I didn't know back then, thank you.

I loved them very much, but the tank wasn't a tank, more like a fish bowl, and the fish were quite small. It wasn't filted or anything. We always changed the water, so it stayed clean and with all the correct fish chemical things we put in it. It wasn't heated because it was a cold water fish, warm water fishes are more expensive and usually more exotic looking and harder to take care of.
