    Hi from a German viewer 😁
    While it's true that 850sqi is the bare minimum in Germany, the recommended size is more around 1500sqi (1m2), with a pan depth of 11-12", we also have healthcare insurance for small animals, which I think is amazing, but even here there are a lot of people who don't care about the guidelines and don't get caught.
    I just hope that one day all pets get the care they need and I'm so thankful for wonderful people like Munchie, who not only educate others, but also rescue animals in need 😊

Also here there is actually really good rabbit care. I was very happy when I went to the pet store since I just moved from Puerto Rico where Pet smart is the petstore

    I'm from the UK and I can absolutely say we don't have good pet care laws! Some bigger cages are available but most people don't know that a hamster needs a big enclosure, so the market ends up looking much like the US market. Looking as German amazon it looks like it's a lot better over there though. And no, 620 sq inches is not enforced here in the slightest.
    Our biggest pet store, Pets at Home (much like Petsmart or Petco), has a cage for sale on their website called a circus cage, which is about 250 sq inches and they RECOMMEND putting !!2!! dwarfs in it!!! Or alternatively 1 Syrian, which is still too small. I haven't had a hamster for many years, but I know when I did, my enclosure was wayyy too small, as that was what was advertised at the pet shop.

      I bought a cage from pets at home that I use as a travel/bonding cage for my mice. It is sold as a cage for animals to live in full time, mice, hamsters, even gerbils. It’s 200 square inches...
      Luckily, I think, they’ve discontinued it and now sell only the slightly larger versions which are both too small as well.

    • @thesecretroman
      @thesecretroman Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah I'm from the UK too. Bigger cages are available here but you have to look for them, very much like in the US. Most of the cages in pet stores are tiny. Pets at home do sell a cage that is around 525 Square inches which they sell as a "extra large syrian hamster cage" which would be okay for dwarfs i guess.
      But for the most part people just get their info from the stores and end up putting them in things not much bigger than shoebox.

    Devoted rat mama here to put in my two cents that this cage would make a great holding cage for rats. I use something similar for when I'm cleaning their cage to keep them out of the way and I'm thinking about upgrading my holding cage to a Preview 528 since I now have six rats instead of just three. I also want those tubes, I know my girls would love them and I have no idea where to get tubes like that in a big enough size. However, this is in no way big enough for an everyday cage for rats, especially since rats are social and cannot be housed alone. However I really do like it as a travel or holding cage. The escape issues brought up could still be an issue for very young or small rats, and I would worry about their toes getting pinched in the parts that seem to want to move around, though.

      I feel like it could make an "okay" cage for 2 rats but bigger is always better. It actually reminds me of my first cage, it's above the minimum for 2 rats but not by much, it's made of middling quality materials, not awful but not great and the doors require a bit of jury rigging to prevent escapes. It's the kind of cage that you buy when you're first starting out and don't know as much as you should. I'd buy it for the tubes alone, then I'd use it as a travel cage or Frankenstein it to my current cage (I have a Prevue Hendrix Fiesty Ferret Cage with a couple of homemade extensions). Sorry for rambling, I just enjoy debating the merits of different products with other rat owners :)

    Hi Munchie, I'm from Germany and i rescue hamsters and mice!
    I've heard you say the german hamster minimum is 860 sqin a few times now and i want to inform you that thats not correct. The "official" minimum by the TVT and BMEL is 775 sqin. Most hamster rescues require adopters to have 775 sqin for dwarf hybrids and 930 sqin for syrians and robos. I've never heard of 860 sqin being used as a minimum anywhere in germany, may i ask where you got that number from?
    I also wanna say something about the whole "people easily get in trouble for neglecting their pets" thing... sadly that is mostly just true for cats and dogs. While we do have some laws and regulations for rodent care, they are not being enforced when it comes to pets such as hamsters or mice. The only reason someone would actually get in trouble over bad hamster care is if they are literally killing their pets or are an animal hoarder in which case our "official" minimum could come into play. Then it could be used as proof of neglect in court. But it is only a guideline and not an actual law meaning we sadly cant call the cops on anyone using a crittertrail haha.
    Basically we are just lucky to have an amazing hamster community in germany, everything outside of that is sadly not that much better than the rodent care in other countries.

    Hello from Germany :D
    It is true, that our bare minimum for gerbils and hamsters is around 0.5 m^2 of unbroken floor space. Although many well educated hamster and gerbil owners will have even lager cages. Especially for (two) gerbils the minimum lies around 0.75 m^2 with a bedding depth of 30-40 cm. And: bar cages have a pretty bad reputation, because there are some hamsters, which will climb the bars and most owners will find it too dangerous (and the bedding height is a problem as well). Something I never really understood, is why pet shops advertise the right bare minimum, but never seem to have decent cages in stock. So all of my cages so far have been from online shops.
    Another thing: German cages seem to have a very natural look, thats mainly because paper bedding isnt that easy to purchase in Germany (and we tend to have high quality wood based bedding). Again something that may sound a bit extra is, that its not recommended to use wooden hidey houses with bark (because most of the time its made out of pine or cedar) and to not use something with nails or staple needles in it. And we typically dont use plastic at all in our cages.
    There are lots of hamster rescues out there, most of them dont only have a regulation on the cage size or the size of the wheel, but also check the diameter of all entrances to houses (typically its 5 cm for dwarf hamsters and 7 cm for gerbils and syrians) or the size of the sand bath as well.
    Seed mixes are also normally purchased online and dont contain any extras.
    Even though the standards are pretty high, not everyone sticks to it. There still are way to small cages, syrians living together, home breeding...and the list goes on.
    I hope that someday all hamsters and gerbils can live species-appropriate.
    Have a great day :D (and sorry for some mistakes)

      @@marinavengohecheadelgado1773 Hello :D I never had a group of three gerbils before, but this is what I found after a bit of research: the "official" bare minimum for a group of three gerbils is 0.6 m^2 (basically 0.5 m^2 for two gerbils, plus additional 20% more floorspace for another one), but the recommended minimum for a group of three is around 0.9 m^2 (for example 150x60 cm). Many people (myself included) use a tank with a custom made tank topper, or a modified terrarium on top of a tank (just to give you some ideas). This could be one example (its in German, but I hope the picture can illustrate what I wanted to say): image.jimcdn.com/app/cms/image/transf/dimension=710x10000:format=jpg/path/s098007901c094493/image/iba79a74eb35182eb/version/1478913343/image.jpg

      @@neteni1001 Hi Neteni! Many thanks for all the information and the link, it's really helpful ☺️ one last question, if you don't mind: the recommended floorspace of 0.9m2 can be divided on 2 floors or does it have to be continuous, like for hamsters? It will be very difficult for me to place an enclosure of 0.9m2 in my flat, as it is rather small. Thank youuu!!! ☺️

    • @neteni1001
      @neteni1001 Před 3 lety +1

      @@marinavengohecheadelgado1773 Hello ^^ I think they mean unbroken floorspace. But (in my opinion) a division isnt that dramatic if each compartment is big enough (So I dont think it would be a problem to connect two 0.5m^2 cages together). You just really need to be careful that no gerbil decides to claim a seperate enclosure as their territory. Groups of three tend to get into fighting more often, than a pair of gerbils. Its really important not to give them too much of a division inside their cage and to give them two entrances (at least!) for basically everything. May I ask the age and gender of your gerbils? Female groups tend to be a bit more unstable than males (especially in their puberty).
      I hope this was helpful ^^ have a great rest of your day.

      @marinavengohecheadelgado1773 Před 3 lety

      @@neteni1001 Hi! If it's undivided floorspace, the enclosure must be very large. I don't think that I have the space at home for such a big enclosure, as I live in a small flat. That's why I was wondering if the top floor counts as floorspace or not. I have 3 male gerbils that are 1 year old and enjoy burrowing and also love the top floor (they even sleep upstairs in the spring/summer). I usually fill the bottom of the cage to the brim with homemade shredded kitchen paper bedding (about 35-40cm) and many tubes, chew toys, cork and hides; and a 27cm diameter wheel hanging from the top. I'm trying to provide the best quality of life that I can, and that's why I'm asking so many questions. Many thanks for your time, it helps a lot ☺️

    OMG i have almost the same exact cage as shown in this video! The difference is: its slightly bigger, reaching 453 sq inch instead but still pretty much the minimum (it was the largest cage we could find locally). The bars are also white instead of black. I do, however, want to upgrade to a bigger cage regardless.
    And yes, for the record, the clips are DREADFUL. I tried cleaning the cage several times, the clips legitimately broke in half while I was trying to unhook them. The cage only has 2 clips on the front and back of the far end of either side, which is what made me look for a new cage in the first place. Luckily dwarf hamsters don't seem as strong as syrians, so she can't lift up the bars, but its not very secure and worries me.

    I just ordered 2 of these cages for my rat maternity cages. I have a bin cage, but they're so much work to make, I opted for this. It was also $40 cheaper than the Prevue cage, which I actually initially had in my cart but they only 3 had left and by the time I was ready to check out, there was only one left. I didn't want 2 different cages so I got 2 of these... ANYWAYS...
    I feel like this video was a little biased, expecting it to be a cheaper prevue, and it kinda is, but you also gotta accept it for what IT is as a cage. It has it's flaws and I appreciate you pointing them out because now I know what to expect when mine come so I can set it up well for my rattos. The tubes I plan on putting in my DCN with my adult rats and I ordered some smaller things for when I have babies.
    Overall, I really appreciate getting to see someone use this cage since the photos they have listed make it look small, but it is the slightly bigger than the 110qt cages I've been using, it might even work out as a topper for those types of bins with some modification. lol

We have the information and guidelines, but there are always people who just don't care. However, in pet groups and rescues they usually are very strict about minimum sizes. Some of my rat boys are rescued from horrible conditions, to the point that some had chronic illness because the damage was already done. Three are babys from rats rescued from an animal hoarder. This was a case where all of the animals were taken away and that person was forbidden to have animals again. Did y’all see the new Kaytee cage? It’s for guinea pigs and rabbits, and it’s a HUGE step in the right direction! The guinea pig one is basically an improved version of the Midwest cage, 8 sq ft. The rabbit one is ok, 12.5 sq ft (rabbits should really not have a cage at all, and roam around and use a litter box like indoor cats) but again compared to their other “rabbit” products it’s a lot better! I’m the little intro video to it they actually promote and encourage having multiple guinea pigs, and also giving both the guinea pigs and rabbits free roam time! Thank you Kaytee for finally listening!
