THE RESULT OF POORLY BRED HAMSTERS | The Sailor Moon Litter Intake | Munchie's Place

  • At the Rescue i founded, we take in hamsters/gerbils/mice. We are known to take in Syrian Litters from time to time. Big or Small. But this litter we dubbed the "Sailor Moon Litter" has had so many medical problems, so many hardships, that it's a lesson to be learned to animal lovers and their companion animals about preventing suffering and hardships. Please do not intentionally breed your companion, please understand why genetics are so important if you're looking into the hobby of having a Hamstery and why it's putting an animal in danger by choosing blindly to mate your hamster when it's meant to be for companionship as a pet owner, not a breeder. This litter has been the saddest litter I've ever had to be emotionally involved with at the Rescue.

Hello viewers alike who're coming from the YT Algorithm. This is a vlog about events that're happening at the rescue i founded that're relevant to those who've been following along on my journey of rescuing small animals such as hamsters/gerbils/mice (Instagram is where most of these stories stem from). If you're new here, please be aware this is a breaking point for me and an all time low at the rescue as i share my journey with you all openly. It's an emotional video. While i shouldn't have to warn people of everything that needs to be talked about in this video, others have taken the liberty to inform me of how i need to make videos, because i don't inform people correctly. I really don't think there is a right or wrong way to inform someone. You the recipient may take things differently than others and that's perfectly okay. Please understand if this is not your cup of tea, just let it be. Pouring out my emotions on camera is hard. I wear my heart on my sleeve. If you're not familiar with me, my style, please be respectful. I'm aware this video can cause emotions in other people. Animals mean a lot to me and that's why i rescue, foster, rehome with my amazing team of volunteers. I am on youtube to spread information, encourage or to inspire others. Thank you for hearing me out and for listening and for being kind about it.

Oh. My. Goodness. I cannot tell you how sorry I am for what you've gone through. I run a small, family-owned non-profit rescue/foster for Betta fish and nano aquaria, and I cannot tell you how bad I've seen these poor guys and what they've gone through, so I can understand. Seriously, how can people be so selfish to go through all this just to abuse or neglect a little pet, like your little sweethearts? Your little Sailor Moon litter didn't ask for this horrific heart disease! If only people would be smarter and more considerate than they are now....then no animal would have to go through such a terrible, horrific, slow, painful death 😭 I teared up several times throughout this video, trying not to cry since my family would probably give me a strange side glance, but my heart goes out to you and the wonderful things you do! You're the reason these sweethearts were given a good home, even if it wasn't permanent...❤

What a lot of backyard breeders don't seem to realise is yes, they'll naturally breed BUT you're putting them in a "last female and male on earth" scenario and playing God. They don't have the pick of healthiest mate, you've lumped Genetic Disorder Gerry and Heart Disease Hattie together and left them with no healthy choices. In the wild, weak and sickly hamsters don't get to breed, they're out competed by the healthy. Naturally in ideal conditions, your shop hamsters probably wouldn't breed in the wild.

"LOL, lets just see what happens isn't this exciting BABIES OMGG!!1"
And then what do you do with them. When you don't have the space, when the animals end up with health complications like this. These poor creatures, that didn't ask to be part of this world, end up either dumped, in the wrong hands or if they're lucky, with someone like you. Who then has to go through all of the heartache of seeing these animals suffer, that some thoughtless individual carelessly brought in to being only to live short painful lives.
Thank you for doing the best for these little creatures, and thank you for making this video. If all the pain you and these little hamsters went through gets through to even just a few people, then at least I hope you can find some comfort in knowing you might have prevented more situations like this from occurring.
All of my empathy and love to you and this poor little litter. This didn't have to happen, but at least you were there. I'm sorry you went through this. I have seizures and I can only imagine being so small and having the same thing. They really are horrible.
That being said, I wanted to share something.
About 4 years ago, I bought a male dog from out of state from a breeder of merit with the AKC. It said she did all the testing and had a full disclosure agreement. I got my boy, about a year later I did his urine analysis and it was slightly off so rather than chance it, I decided to neuter him. Last year, I let him outside to potty and when I went to get him 20 minuets later he was dead in my yard. I took him to the vet to find out what went wrong to protect the other 2 dogs that live with me. He had a hereditary heart condition and a heart attack was what took his life.
I contacted the breeder to let her know what I had found out and she already knew. Then through our discussion I found out he was the last dog to die out of his litter. There were 9 puppies. 9 of them. All but my boy died within 2 years of being born and sold and he never saw his 5th birthday. Turns out the mother had the same heart condition and so did the father's lines. So what happened was these puppies got it on both sides and that is what ultimately killed them.
Moral of the story, be careful who you trust as a reputable breeder. Make sure you know enough to know if this person is playing with you. Make sure you know what tests need to be done, do the research, and if you are getting an animal of any sort from a breeder ask for the parent's test results. If you are going to breed, and I have so I get it the tests are expensive, but they are so incredibly important. Don't let poor information break your heart and be the reason you break someone else's heart.

I can somewhat sympathize with being overwhelmed when breeding... I wanted to breed rabbits once.
I was prepared, at least I thought I was. I knew the basics of taking care of mom and babies, I had a couple of purebred rex rabbits. Not pet shop rabbits, these were Show-rabbits.
They had good health and were both very friendly.
They had a litter of babies...12 babies... This was just the start of the trouble... I started begging for advise online getting tons of conflicting advice, same saying get them replacement milk, others saying I should absolutely NOT give them replacement milk... 8 died within the first two weeks. By the time they started venturing outside the nest however the remaining four started gaining weight, as they were now capable of eating on their own.
I had a few buyers lined up as I had advertised them before I even attempted the breeding... Guess how many of those came through when the babies were 8 weeks old...
    2.
    Only 2.
So the other two stayed with me. No big deal right? I was gonna keep at least one anyway, and eventually I was also able to find a home for the other.
A year later I had another litter. This one fared a lot better health-wise as there were only 6 of them.
However this time around everyone who had asked to adopt a kit in the past pulled out for one reason or another. I was able to rehome one of them, but in the end I was left with 10 rabbits.
Mom and dad, 6 of their children and two mixbreeds I just kept as pets.
The problem this time however was that I simply didn't have the time or capability to take care of 10 rabbits. Most of them lived in separate hutches except the mom and her only daughter as well as the two mixbreeds. The youngest weren't particularly tame, the dad and the oldest son got sore hooks (basically bumblefoot in rabbits, can happen from unsanitary environments, rex rabbits are especially prone to it due to their short fur).
In the end I ended up setting up an ad for the entire breeding stock. (Simply surrendering them to a rescue wasn't really an option as the local rescues around here only take in homeless pets, and I wasn't gonna just abandon them in the woods.) I just had to get rid of them, they wouldn't be happy if I kept them all together like this. (And yes the two with sore paws were all better at this point, but I did warn the new owners.) I had one guy offering to take all of them...he already had over 200 rabbits he said...I said no. He might have been better at taking care of large amount of rabbits but I seriously doubt he would do anything more than the bare minimum to keep them alive and healthy.
In the end I was left with only three rabbits. Luckily things ended happier for those three at least as they were all fixed and bonded together as a trio.
I bring this story up rather frequently when I hear about people wanting to breed because "babies are so cute" or "I wanna teach my kids responsibility."
Well first of you're not teaching them responsibility, quite the opposite in fact... Secondly things can go wrong really fast. If you wanna breed thing about it, do your research, think more, plan for everything, do more research, think even more. And prepare for having to keep every single baby. Doesn't matter if all your cousins said they wanted a hamster 3 months ago. A lot can happen in-between you breeding your pets and them actually being ready for adoption.
My situation happened after I HAD done research and actually had a pretty decent breeding pair. And even then it ended in disaster.
My last hamster had a similar seizure to Saturn too...she died on the way to the vet.

Rabbits should not be kept in hutches. I understand that this isnt now but if you still have rabbits in hutches that is very bad for their health. Rabbits need a lot of space or they are prone to many health problems especially with their joints. If you still have rabbits please do proper research on how they should be raised. People are so careless and irresponsible with "breeding" small animals. It is a huge problem with rats as well. Hey, those two look adorable and have a nice temperament, they will have the sweetest babies! As if they were toys or a real life video game. Who cares about genetics, those small pets don't live long anyways and the parents seemed perfectly healthy at the moment. It's the animals that have to suffer from health problems or end up being homeless when the famous "just one litter" gets out of control because they separate the sexes too late. Small pets deserve they same respect and care as any other animal, even if their lifespan is short, it should be healthy and as long as possible.

There are a hand few of such responsible breeders here in Germany. No dog or cat breeder would be like: Oh, if not all of the puppies are adopted, they can be given away as feeders for zoo animals. I absolutely hate this. I feel like people will breed carelessly with animals like hamsters because they’re just seen as “stupid little pets.” NO. They are living beings just like any other animal! I bet you that if these were dogs, cats, whatnot, people would be in tears. But if you were maybe say in public crying like this over a hamster, you’d be made fun of, because people are heartless and don’t see them on the same level as a pet like cats or dogs. There aren’t only issues of reckless breeding when it comes to hamsters. Many of them end up killed due to carelessness of a family or even sadist kids left unsupervised by their parents. And people don’t care because they’re “just a little pet to give Timmy when he turns 8!” (Please note, I’m not referencing feeding the animal to a reptile. While I couldn’t do it, it’s still the circle of life and so I have no comment. The people I’m complaining about are the ones who purchase these animals purely to torture them or to neglect them. I’m pretty sure it happens with rodents more than anything else.)

Hi, Munchie. I’m a first time hamster parent. Where I have previously parented gerbils, rats, & mice, this is the first time hamsters have come to live with me. So, here’s my story...
On 10/3/19 I adopted 2 female pups that were 4 weeks old. They came from a family, whom I understood, were not adequately supervising the 10 & 12 year old children that the hamsters were purchased for, so there was “unintentional breeding”. I wasn’t given much more information than that & didn’t even realize at that point that there are so many breeds, much less that each breed has very specific needs for their care. It took me researching hamster care to realize I hadn’t gotten nearly enough information from the previous owners.
About 5 weeks later, the same family asked if I would adopt some more pups from another litter. I agreed to adopt 2 more females, but by then I knew they were Syrians & felt I had a better handle on what I needed to provide for them. At that point I felt I had things under control.....
About a week after that, the same family asked me to take a pregnant female... I agreed, because otherwise this pregnant baby would have been THROWN OUT WITH THE TRASH in negative 14 degree Fahrenheit cold... THAT IS 46 DEGREES BELOW FREEZING!!!!! (insert several tears & many deep breaths here) Mama gave birth within HOURS of her arrival... I'm not exactly sure how many pups she had initially, but there were 8 males 4 females that came from that litter... To say the least, the boys were separated from the group at 6 weeks...
    Let’s do the math... 2 + 2 + 1 + 12 = 17 Syrian hamsters... Each requiring separate accommodations...
Munchie, I am overwhelmed... I am in Alaska & there are no rescues for these types of animals in this area. I simply don’t have the space to give each of these precious creatures adequately sized enclosures, but I really am doing my best. To date, I've spent well over $1,000 creating enclosures that I can fit in my apartment, but each baby only has 248 square inches. (That dollar amount includes bins, mesh, 14” wheels, 6 ounce water bottles, hideys, & chews for EACH of the 17 hamsters.)
I’m not sharing this to garner kudos/praise for what I'm doing, because I honestly don’t think I'm doing enough for these amazing creatures. I’m sharing this to support your message, PLEASE DO NOT BREED YOUR HAMSTERS!
Having had literal colonies of female gerbils & mice in the past, I honestly didn’t realize how different the care for hamsters would be. I can claim initial ignorance, but the information is readily available. I am in over my head & I know it, but I will continue to do what I can do to provide for these babies as best as I can.
My hat is off to you. You have done what I wanted to do 25 years ago... You are providing refuge for animals that aren’t necessarily considered worthy of such care in our society, & you are providing them with real care. Thank you.

My very first hamster came from my boyfriend's younger sister who decided to breed hamsters together to get more.
...she was the oldest of her litter when she passed at 1 yr 7 months. One sister passed of pyrometra. Two of her brothers had seizures. It was the saddest thing Ive seen. This is why I will always have a spot open for a rescue hamster from Craigslist or wherever.

My first hamster lived the average lifespan of a winter white. His last day, I found him struggling to breath, and I knew his time was coming soon for about a week as he was slowing down a lot and was older. I held him against my chest and pet him softly until he past away peacefully. It was such a hard day. I can’t imagine losing a hamster so young so unnaturally.

But surrendered their ferrets to me , ferrets that didn’t know how to handle being touched since they were never handled, I regularly rescue and rehome animals and situations like this always make me mad

They can't help It. Why do people think that it is ok to breed two totally random animals? I can't even try to imagine breeding two hamsters for no other reason then I want more. It's so selfish. I really appreciate what you do. Thank you for doing what you do. I know it can be hard.

Hey Munchie, don't know if you'll see this, but I really just wanted to thank you for everything you're doing. Not only are you helping those in need, but educating people with the power to hopefully make sure no other animal has to suffer due to ignorance. Your videos have been a huge inspiration and help when I began my own hamster journey back in 2018. I watched your videos to absorb all the knowledge I could before I got a hamster.
He's living happily in a 40 gallon terrarium with huge rat hides and an enormous Wodent Wheel. It was people like you who educated me and allowed me to make the right decisions to create such a wonderful life for this creature. The idea that I could have mistakenly put him in a critter trail due to ignorance makes me shiver. But luckily, I came across wonderful people like you.
I work in a pet store, the same one I got my hamster from, and thanks to these videos I'm considered the 'Hamster Expert' among my coworkers. I don't approve of where the hamsters come from, but I find comfort in knowing that I can educate families on how to care for their new pet. I want these animals to have a good life, and I'm able to do that thanks to you.
You are putting your heart and soul into the rehabilitation of these animals, and it's nothing but admirable. You have my eternal thanks for everything you've done, and I wish you the best of luck and happiness in the future.

This is the reason I decided to adopt hamsters via marktplaats (the dutch craigslist kind of site) instead of pet stores. I got my first hamster from someone who had an accidental litter, she is a female tortoise shell Syrian hamster and she's almost 2 years old now. I then got a small male roborovski dwarf from a pet store, they needed him gone because of the hot weather so he was free which means the store didn't get any money of of him. He passed away in the beginning of February he was about 1 and a half years old. Then I adopted a little black colored winter white dwarf who passed away the beginning of this month, I only had her for a month and I was told she was 10 weeks old but when she passed and I got to look really close she looked to be much older so I'm 99% sure I've been lied to. I do still have a rescued female Syrian who has a little bit of trouble when it comes to bladder control, luckily I have vets for teachers and they told me that it was fine but I do need to keep an eye on her in case anything changes. I now have room for 1 dwarf hamster and I am patiently waiting till I find one close to me, I'm 17 so my parents have to drive me around. I am very close to getting my driver's license though but I first have to go through surgery myself the 19th.
Losing animals like this because of bad breeding is the worst feeling but exactly the reason I want to take care of animals. We all need to spread awareness so that this doesn't happen.
Me, my 2 hamsters, 2 Guinea pigs (also rescues) and my pupper all send you love and the extra strength you need to keep going!

I got my current hamster, Toph, from adoption at PetSmart, he's a few months old, and he is blind. As in, he doesn't have any eyes at all. It's just skin on both sides, I believe that he's like that because of bad breeding. Thankfully, the PetSmart employee actually somewhat knew stuff about hamsters, at least she knew more than other people. But it's so sad that people do this to hamsters. Toph is healthy and happy now though. Poor little hamsters

I've kept ex-battery (caged) chickens since I was 7, and I always think the same when one of them dies (as they sadly have such short lifespans due to the intensity of the abuse they endured). I just lost two of them in the past week and a half, and although I was devastated, I know they had good lives, and are making room for more to come. thank you so, so much for making this video. people need to take serious care when breeding and prioritise the animal's needs over their wants.

Never owned hammies but we owned three poorly bred lop rabbits. The first one didnt make his first winter, our little girl had an underbite which is one of the worst things to happen to rodents because they need to file down their teeth, the underbite meant she couldnt file down her teeth. Me and my dad had to learn how to clip her teeth by ourselves and while to them its like clipping your toenails, it was still always so uncomfortable for both parties. Rosie (the little gorl) and her brother Max lived together for maybe three or four years before Max died, and then Rosie died a few months later. I still have pictures both digital and paper of all three, and I still miss them terribly, even after eight years or so afterwards because despite trying my very best to help them, it was a constant battle for their care and they still died too early and while they died quickly I have no doubt they died in pain as I held all three while they passed. Because of their traumatic deaths while I was just a young kid, I will forever have a negativity towards breeding. No animal should ever go through what I watched with my own babies.
