  • TW: This never gets any easier. As a small mammal Rescue, we see a lot of unintentional neglect by pet owners. But this is just so heart breaking to find two winter white dwarf hamsters in such rough shape. Please, if you consider getting an animal, you are fully responsible for the welfare and safety of it. Don't get a pet if you do not have the money, the drive or the time to make sure they're given all that they need. This has NO excuses. No one should be giving these people a break for what a living thing had to suffer through in order to get to this point. THANK GOD THEY WERE SAVED!
Again, shoutout to my incredible team of volunteers and helpers. I couldn't have done this without you guys. ❤️

I got my first mouse when I was in an awful mental state. My accomplishments for the day was cleaning water, and giving new food, or cleaning his tank. Playing with him and interacting was my socializing. Taking care of him, even when taking care of myself was an issue, was always a priority, and it was very rewarding. Companionship of these little guys is definitely helpful if you have mental issues, as long as you can at least take care of them and the area near them so they can be healthy.

I completely understand! I got 4 (a daddy rat and 3 of his boys) rats from an online ad because:
      1) they were listed as for free, (which is a bad idea as it usually attracts people who will mistreat them or use them as feeders)
2)their owner was experiencing such an awfully long depressive episode that she admitted she was forgetting to feed them. (As someone with diagnosed depression, I can completely understand this. I've almost been to that point myself but thankfully it hasn't gotten that bad)
I didn't try to make her feel bad, because it wouldn't accomplish anything; she was still able to realize she wasn't in the right state of mind to care for them; she actually made the effort to rehome them. While I dislike when people don't take care of their pets properly, I think being rude and shaming them makes them less likely to try to do the right thing rehome them.)
They were skinny, had mites AND fleas (!), and smelled like the lady was a smoker. Thankfully, I was able to treat all this and I was able to spend about half a year with 2 the dad Blue, then a few months later, one of his boys Templeton, as they sadly ended up passing from respiratory illness. The other 2 boys are still with me but it looks like 1 boy may not have much longer.

@@mitsukitai2713 That’s great! I completely agree. Making the effort to re-home them is what counts in that situation. It’s definitely understandable to go through periods like that, I wish everyone would go about in the way that person did!

But you have to be 100% sure, if there is any risk that you will get so depressed that you'll get incapable of fully caring for it don't get one (unless you have help from someone else with thecare), zero excuse. I really want a cat myself but I don't have the money or health to be totally sure I can care for all the cats needs, so I don't get a cat even if I really want to. Pets are not toys or things you get just because you really want to.

    • @teijaflink2226
      @teijaflink2226 Před 2 lety +2

If you unexpectedly get depressed then it's of course totally fine to rehome, even if I get annoyed by people who constantly rehomes pets (those who just get bored), life happens and better rehome than accidentally neglect.

Anyone who neglects and abused ANY ANIMAL should go to jail. No matter what animal it is. I’m tired of people always defending dogs if they’re ever abused but then just stop caring when it’s a fish or a hamster ( I’m not saying it’s ok to abuse dogs, obviously it’s not ok I’m just saying when it’s another animal people just stop caring). Every animal deserves love.

Reptiles are also typically dismissed by people who would burst a blood vessel if a dog was fed fifteen minutes later than usual. 🙄 I always wonder about those people… is it that they can only bring themselves to care about something if it is totally obedient, acts as if they are the greatest thing ever, and shores up their ego? I love dogs, but…. I’ve begun to see “likes dogs, but is indifferent to all other animals” as a biiiig red flag…

I have two female Syrian hamsters and coming home taking care of them, spot cleaning their enclosures, feeding, giving fresh water, making sure they have clean wheels etc it's therapeutic actually, it's almost like a job to me but one I really enjoy and I know they are well cared for. Hamsters have such a short little life and I want to give them the best in that short time, it's so incredibly sad that some people treat them like a toy or some kind of decoration, they are alive and breathing just like us so don't get any kind of pet if you cannot mentally or physically handle it because it's simply not fair to them and they don't deserve it.

Mental illness is a hard thing to deal with, but I'm so tired of so many people suggesting that those people should get a pet to cope with it. I've heard enough horror stories, seen enough disturbing images, and even witnessed the neglect these animals get put through because their owner isn't capable of caring for another living creature, let alone themselves. It's not the case with everyone who's mentally ill, of course, but it's unfortunately a common experience.
I'm severely mentally ill, but when I got my hamster, it was a very conscious decision. I had hamsters as a kid, but I didn't know much about their care, so I literally spent hours reading up on it. I only got them after I was certain I was prepared and able to care for them. It's been two years now and that hamster has honestly been living a better life than me. He's spoiled as hell. He's a little, old man now, but he's still active and still gives me the 'tude when I take too long getting him a treat. I'm rambling now, but I love my Dandy, and seeing Bonte destroyed me because I wish she could have a life like Dandy's had.
Those hamsters deserved so much better. If you're mentally ill and wanting a pet, please think it over carefully and do your research. If you can't provide them with a good quality of life, please don't sentence them to a subpar existence for the sake of your mental health. Pets aren't coping mechanisms.

Watching your videos helped me so much make sure I gave the best life to these fur babies. These intake videos are devastating yet so NEEDED to show people that no matter how many of us now give our rodents the best care, it is in fact still controlled by the pet industry and neglect is still so common. These sort of cases upset me so much. I just don't understand how people can let it get so bad. There is NEVER a reason to neglect an animal.
I ended up in a coma about 6 months ago and had to leave my little hammy Mitzi behind. My roommate ended up taking care of her with what little information they got from me in passing (they did an excellent job considering). We worked hard to make sure Mitzi had everything she needed and even when I returned home and COULDN'T WALK YET, I made sure I found a way to spot clean/feed/water/give her treats.
It makes 0 sense to me. I understand cases of surrender where there's no choice and the pet is still healthy, but not abuse cases...

Here in the Philippines they treat hamsters not as pet but a disposable animal and there are lots of unethical breeders here. Hamsters are mostly kept in small cages, no wheel, improper diet, unsafe bedding, no hides, and no deep bedding - not even enough for them to at least cover themselves in. There are even unethical breeders who quit breeding as they are not making profit out of it and ended up selling all the hamsters that they own which mostly consists of 10+ hamsters to another buyer who is also planning in making it into a "business". However, if they couldn't find a buyer, they release them into the wild. 😡😢
They clearly show no compassion or remorse for these small animals. 😢

She was stinky and greasy when I got her and within 2 days she smells fine and isn’t greasy anymore. She has also gained a couple grams. She was taken in earlier in the week by someone else who couldn’t keep her long term but they at least were feeding her so idk how emaciated she was before that.
Her name is Alice like Alice in Wonderland.

Oh poor little angels, I'm so glad that they're with you now and getting the help they desperately need.
I had a rescue hamster called Storm who looked just like Bonte. She also had a back hunch, seeming disorientated and was very underweight when we got her. She was lethargic and miserable and even started to have seizure like episodes. It turned out she had severe diabetes which couldn't be controlled with diet management (we tried) and had been left unchecked for over 6 months by previous owner who were feeding them mostly carrot, sunflower seeds and those damn yogurt drop things.
We found a specialist vet (a 1h 30m drive away) who worked with us to make an insulin dose regime with urinalysis and blood tests to find correct dosage and strict diet management. Sadly due to all the stress on her body she only lived another 6 months after starting it but in those 6 months her life transformed she started to run in her wheel, her weight balanced out, the hunched back even completely flattened out after a couple months and her hair started to grow back. She was completely herself again and even though it was a lot of stress and money and work it was absolutely worth it to see her feel so much better.
If anyone is reading this wondering what the treatment was here's a summary since I know it can be hard to find info on the subject :- injecting insulin every 12 hours for 6 months, carefully portioned nugget type food every twelve hours offered just after insulin injection to avoid blood sugar spikes, urine tests 3 times a week and blood tests 3 times with anesthesia, absolutely no food high in sugar eg. corn, carrot, bell peppers or basically anything labeled as a hamster treat at a store. We also reduced fat intake slightly and increased fiber by giving small amounts of kale, broccoli and occasionally spinach.
Edit: Just wanted to add that 99% of the time she didn't even notice the injection as it's just into the scruff at back of the neck and you do get really practiced at giving them. If you're ever struggling ask your vet to show you them doing it using saline, don't be embarrassed to ask it's not like anyone not a medical professional would know and it's much better to not have to try it for the first time at home alone :)

My tip for anyone going through a hard time mentally and they want an animal companion but aren’t sure if they can care for it is to a) enlist help from trustworthy people if you already have pets, whether it be through temporary pet-sitting or through rehoming, b) volunteer at an animal shelter or advocate for the animals there through donations to shelters and rescues and/or advertising adoptable pets. There are many ways to virtually adopt an animal through donating, where they’ll give you a plush copy of the animal, a certificate, maybe some fact sheets, and regular updates on the animal’s wellbeing. You might not be able to be physically there for them in person, but at least they will feel the very tangible benefits of what you have given to them. Seriously though, there is no shame in having animal plushies. Sometimes having lifelike toys with none of the necessary obligations of a living being might help out. But it’s not for everyone.

I dont understand why people cant take hammy safe stuff cleaner (fairy or otherwise) to clean a "cage." It shocks me. the amount of times my white/grey syrian has bit me (yes i use a jug to transport her to her temp cage while cleaning) and yet I still, STILL, clean everything, her bedding, her wheel, her glass enclosure, everything. She is a rescue and bites me constantly, and yet takes food from me so gently, she is so sweet. The fact that people cant even google a simple "why my hammy bites" etc, that the fact that ppl buy a hamster without any know-how. Just cuz, "it's a small animal whatever" pains me. I can't even tell you how quickly how my hamster bites healed, my rabbits (12 rescues seprate) bit me? They all earnt trust me over time. If you have mental health, physical issues, maybe impatience? It's ok to feel "hurt" emotionally but a bite, any animal, but can you not take it out on the animal. Idc what the excuse is.

I recently adopted a year old black bear Syrian from a girl who was away at college and the mom couldn’t give her the proper care she needed. She came in this colorful, tall, bird like cage. Barely any beddings, her wheel and hideout was insanely small. She would move around the cage using the colorful plastic tubes, like the critter trail. I felt awful so I slowly transitioned her to a 40 gallon breeder tank which I now realize may be too small or just the bare minimum but she has over 6 inches of beddings, a large wheel, and multiple hideouts. I even had sprays in the enclosure, but I don’t think she was a fan of that. Im planning on making the ikea diy cage too. Ever since I added a large amount of beddings (packed/compressed), she has made her own burrow systems. I don’t see her often but I Know she’s okay when the food “vanishes”. She kinds of exhibits a ghost hamster behavior. When I do see her, i check her little body, nails, etc. She does have some hair loss on her bum, so Im going to take her to the vet.

I feel bad for those poor little guys. :( A dwarf hamster is really not that hard to take care of, if you invest a little time and money into the right research and living situstion for the animal.
I have a rescue hybrid dwarf myself. I got him from a hamster rescue in june 2019, he'll be turning 3 years old next week. He has a huge enclosure (even for german standards - that thing is so big, I can't even move it by myself) with lot's of bedding. I honestly don't know how much longer he'll last, though. His age is catching up to him, he's behaving like a very very old man, but he still takes a jog in his wheel occasionally. He's gotten thinner over the past months and I haven't been able to get more weight on him. He also has a little hunchback (even though he has a nice big wheel, so that's not the issue). I mean... he's very close to being a 3 years old hybrid dwarf. That's pretty much ancient and he's never been ill or never had any issues his entire life.
I had a roborovski before him, also a rescue. He was out of an animal hoarding situation and was 2 when he died. He had tumors. I never expected the hyprid to live that much longer than the robo, honestly. From my experience, hybrids can be quite fragile in health.

I don't understand why it is so hard for people to do their research on the animal they want and decide to NOT get whatever animal if it's care is something they CANNOT handle. NO....instead.....they selfishly get the animals and the animals suffer for whatever reason; poor diet and improper food, too small of enclosures, improper bedding or improper amount of bedding, and getting animals that should be solitary and tossing them together in a small space OR getting a single animal that absolutely HAS to be kept in PAIRS at bare minimum. I want rats. I have to do a lot of stuff around the house and such before my Dad, whom I live with to help him out since he's disabled and I am as well. Animals can really help people with severe depression and anxiety like myself. My cat just passed away a week ago and I really miss him. I live out of town about 3 to 4 miles and am very isolated from pretty much everything and everyone. So, I really miss the company of Lucifer. He was my little black ball of Satan. I haven't been handling it well but my special needs son was very attached to him too. People that get animals and don't take care of them or anything deserve to have the same crap in a human version to happen to them.

The only time she can be gently petted is when she is eating the treats. Otherwise she would chase my hand around for hours on end and when she catches on to it she bites and wont let go until blood gushes/ not sniff or small bites. I’ve done all the “letting her settle in” give her large enclosure with hideouts/enrichment from your + Victoria rachel’s video. Unfortunately some hamsters are just not social. I know it's not nice to hear, but it'd probably be better for him if you stopped with bathtub bonding and trying to pet him. All hamsters are individuals and have their own personality, some will be aggressive and not want to be around people. Its not always fear or needing to settle in, it can just be how he is as an individual. It is definitely a horrible feeling to get a pet and not have them meet the expectations you had for your bond together. I had the same with my dog, I know the feeling, but sometimes we just have to accept it and do what makes the animal comfortable and happy instead of forcing them to do something because we want them to do it, you know?

In Germany we only use so called Chinchilla-sand for hamsters. It's round, not sharp and dust free. This is the recommended sand to use and easy to access cause you can buy it in every pet store. Also want to say that even though we have such high standards for hamster enclosures, food and general care.. there are still a lot of crappy cages, really bad food and plastic toys, hamster balls and so on easy to buy in every pet store. For really good food you need to order online.
It makes me sad to always hear those high standards but not seeing it a lot. Most children, yes most hamsters are sold to children, do own a 60cm x 30cm cage (279 sqinch) and wheels that are even too small for a dwarf. It's sad that the companies do not have to follow the standards and people never do proper research.

I like to think I didn't start off wrong, but I did. I had my first hamster in 2009 when I was 8... Small cage, no toys, incorrect wheel... everything was incorrect. I actually was banned from hamster keeping due to the 'smell', my family hated it. Had a female so that probably didn't help either due to the heat cycle. When I turned 20, I was allowed and given the ok ahead to purchase a hamster who is in an IKEA detolf, with lots of bedding, toys, a sand bath, 28cm wheel etc. you name it! Up until 6 days ago, I did have 4 hamsters but Bambi my first ever roborovski passed away at 3 months of age suddenly. I've been crying non-stop! No idea why, he had sand (childrens play sand, no added calcium)... deep bedding, a 21cm wheel, a flying saucer wheel (I know not everyone likes these but personally I think robo's are the only ones who are okay on them)... and lots of toys etc. scatter fed, clean water everyday from a bowl... The last time I saw him alive was Tuesday last week at 6-7pm, never came out on the Wednesday evening... I assumed he was napping when I checked at 6pm... (cause he always came out very early) but brushed it off. That night, he still wasn't awake and I assumed he had escaped when I looked around the top layer of his bedding, hides and toys so I set up traps and a security camera that I had just got. 2 days went by and nothing... I sifted through his enclosure one very last time.. and I saw a little bit of brown tuff poke out from the bedding and I froze and just started balling my eyes out like I was 10 all over again. He only came to me on the 19th of February (so literally last month), when I adopted him. I feel so guilty, because early Wednesday morning I was awake until 7am... I was there and wasn't there as he took his last breath and I feel like I missed the chance to save him even though I was there... Get him breathing and to the vet ASAP... I feel dreadful. I'm rehoming one of my Syrians tomorrow because he's still unhappy in his IKEA detolf (I have four ikea detolfs) and he's chewed a hole all the way through before I could notice and tile it... so giving him to an IRL friend who is also in hamster groups and care communities since she has a spare room and the space to offer more. So that leaves me with one Syrian and one hybrid all over again. When my Syrian sadly passes away, I think I'll stick to the dwarf species because Oreo is such a sweetie and loves cuddles on my chest and falls asleep. And Bambi straight away jumped on my hand and loved attention. They've really won my heart!! Remy is okay with being picked up, but doesn't really like it and the Syrian I'm rehoming (which my friend knows about this) is just so so so aggressive and just bites everything and everyone. Bitten my diabetic grandma, I've tried for months and restarted from the beginning four times but nothing is working sadly.
