    My lack of a sense of taste appears to have people intrigued...so I'll elaborate here, rather than answering all the individual questions. I lost my sense of smell a couple of years ago and the taste went at the same time. Doctors have made a number of attempts to sort the smell out (which is where the problem lies). I've been on a high steroid dose three times and each time smell & taste come back, but the steroid course can only last a few days and as soon as it stops I lose the senses again.

      The best way to toast the bun (imo) is to do it on the same surface you're using to cook the burger. Toasters make the bun too dry for my tastes, but a quick heating on the skillet gets you a crispy outside and a soft inside.

    Brother had one of these in college (actually a double sandwich maker)
    Even if you can’t get your hands on a precook sausage you can always cook up a batch of sausage patties and have then in a container in the fridge.
    This doesn’t toast your muffins but what you can do is run just the muffins cut side down in each compartment (buttering the cut sides ever so slightly) than setting things up.
    If you don’t want your egg to soak into your top muffin cook without the top half of the muffin , just remember to break the yoke. I worked at McDonald’s in high school and halfway through the cook cycle you had to pop each yolk with a spatula so that it hard cooks.
    And even though it says non stick, it does hurt to give it a light coat with some cooking oil and that eg will slide right down

Also this video was just a bit of fun - reviewing something different for a change. I can take or leave McDonalds breakfasts,I do think that they are the best thing on their menu (in the UK), but that said, I only eat perhaps five a year, so I'm not exactly obsessed with them. Thanks for the tips on how to use this, but it's pretty unlikely that I'll be using it again.

  • @tom7601
    @tom7601 Před 6 lety +7

    I bought one of these in December 2017. I found that using a spritz of cooking spray (like PAM in the US) on all the surfaces makes things slide easier. I also found that 4-minutes is plenty. Also, when I crack the egg into the cavity, I break-up the yoke a bit. All in all, I'm happy with it.
    By the way, I bought it after seeing your video. As soon as the video finished, I ordered one from Amazon... :-)

    Sausage and Egg McMuffin is definitely great. I've tried the similar breakfast sandwiches at a lot of fast food places in Canada, like Tim Horton's, A&W etc and I still like McD's the most, though Tim Horton's is decent and has good hashbrowns too. I used to think that if I worked closer to a McDonald's I'd like to have one every day for breakfast, but I thank my arteries that I didn't. Also, don't know if you know or care, but I find that breaking an egg on a flat surface like a counter top is a lot less messy and you often get a better break - bits of shell and goo seemed to fly everywhere when I used to use the edge of a dish, but with the flat surface, the halves can usually be pulled apart intact.

    • @limerent72
      @limerent72 Před 6 lety

      True about a better break on a flat surface. Also you have to hit that sweet spot, and it's not the exact middle of the egg, it's a bit higher up than that. So satisfying when you get a clean break with no shell bits!

    A tip for the dedicated UK Hamilton Beach breakfast sandwich maker fans ....... In the chilled section of supermarkets Aldi and Lidl you may find a magnificent German cooked pork pattie product called "frikadellen" ( 5 for about £1.90 or $ 1.20).
    The little pork beauties are delicious, even if microwaved for a minute, each, with some cheese (and then thrown, haphazardly, onto a toasted muffin with a fried egg) - The big snag, however, is that the frikadellen is about twice the depth of the patties showing out here - so you may have to source the "Hamilton Beach frikadellen slicing- in- two time saving device", in order to make the grade! - You can usually find it in stores, next to the "Ronco remove your underwear from the crack of your bottom rotating probe" ($49.99 + tax).
    I'm not sure where to find "non-stick eggs" tho' :))

      Yeah, precooked patties are sold in the US, but we don't particularly like them. They hardly sell, but something like this makes them more attractive.
      The thing about the precooked sausage is, people are becoming more paranoid of ingredients in things, and it being precooked makes it worse. Most precooked meats have an 'off' taste that suggests it is indeed more than meat and spices.

      I'll probably get the double one--with an on/off switch!--when ours conks out. I won ours--a red one--at a church raffle last year. Husband loves it, especially since I make the sandwiches for him every morning. I watched a few videos on this gadget when I first got it, and it seemed everyone had their own special technique for making their sandwiches with it. After a while, I had it down pat the way we like it. I like to use a beaten egg, and put the cheese in just before the upper sandwich drops down to the bottom at the end. Otherwise the cheese makes too much of a melty mess! Also, you don't necessarily have to use a sausage patty; 3-4 sausage links cut lengthwise work quite well. Only thing I noticed is that the excellent nonstick coating gets less effective over time. And if you had to make more than 2 sandwiches, it takes longer for the 3rd and so on egg to cook properly... I'll own that his has been wordy, but I am a recent fan of TM, and I am just amazed that he did a review on this gadget! :)

    I lay the slices on the bottom plate, flip, toast the muffin in the toaster, remove bacon, cook egg and cheese in the middle, and then I add the bottom muffin as recommended to drop the egg on top.

    I don’t know if you are still using this device, but I’ve had one for the past year and learned some tricks to it.
    1. Use butter! A thin sliver on the bottom, then on top of the bottom muffin half another sliver, ingredients (I highly recommend ham, that should solve your precook meats problem) then before cracking your egg, a thin sliver, then top off with the other half of the muffin, and as this makes both muffins crispy, a thin sliver on top.
    2. Lift the upper hot plate lid off, then slide the swing plate to allow the egg to descend, (the butter provides lubrication and extra non-stick properties) lift egg tray carefully, then make sure to have your spatula as support when you lift the last ring to reveal the finished sandwich.
    3. Fold your cheese in to quarters, what’s with this nipping corners off?!
    It’s a nifty gadget, clean up is quick as long as it’s done promptly as it finishes cooling.
