    FAQ
    Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
    A) Patrons usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.
    PFAQ (Predicted FAQ)
    Q) Why is there a picture of a cheese sandwich on screen at the beginning?
    A) A cheese sandwich indicates that this is a basic video with no frills.

I mean, in fairness, that's very simple to achieve. I'm sure he wasn't waiting there while it charged from flat for that shot! Would take a few seconds once it's fully charged to just remove it, turn it on, then put it back on the charger. Did I need it? Not really. But then, this is a video about a very plain looking white mug, on a white background for the most part. A bit of contrast is always appreciated.

The whole "sign up for an account" thing is beyond absurd. I've had completely good hardware I've had to dispose of because the company that made the product went out of business. There is no longer a way to log in and therefore no way to use the hardware. Plus, even if the company stays in business how long will they support your particular product? It's the next generation of planned obsolescence.

Agree 100%. I can see how the app is more user-friendly and intuitive than doing it on the mug itself. If there weren't smart phones, I'd bet they'd have a little remote or something or integrate it on the saucer, but an app is cheaper and easier for them.

And lithium ion cells in proximity to hot things is not good for the life of the thing. Since you are not going to carry the mug around all the time and it will usually be on its saucer plate thing, add a third contact on the bottom for a thermistor, wire the 2 extant contacts directly to the heating element and have 2 buttons for setting the temperature and an LED readout on the saucer thing.

The only value I can see is that if you've already poured your drink and walked away from it, but decided you wanted to turn it off or change the temp. It'd be alright if you could control everything from one app, and if it was done well. Because, then, you aren't left with a tacky gimmick that'll go obsolete in 3 hours when the company either folds or decides that you can't have a useful feature because you don't give them enough money, because that's all these are. I can definitely see the merits of most of this smart tech, and really appreciate how much better my life would be in a perfect world where companies didn't see us as walking wallets, but stuff like this mug is the equivalent of a shiny sticker that says "You're the best!"; it's just a gimmick to make you feel better about giving another £20 to a fat greedy businessman, that has no merit to its existence. Your phone is a seriously powerful tool that really has the potential to revolutionise your life, but that's mostly stunted by aforementioned cash-cowing executives deciding that a better day is nothing if they're not making enough income to support their oh-so-first world problems like only having a medium portion of fries

Tea 145F and coffee 141F(milk proteins in my coffee cook higher that 141F and would form a skin on top of the coffee at 145F). The battery isn't an issue because it lives on its coaster/charger. It has its problems but I can't live without it. I barely ever use the app. It seems to lose connection to my phone maybe once every 2 months. The charging coaster has a problem, that as far as I know they haven't fixed yet, but the repair is simple and there are many yoputube vids on it.
EDIT: Forgot to mention the problem with the coaster. The springy contacts lose their springiness, but its easy to take the coaster apart and just remove the plastic bit from around the contacts, and the problem is fixed.

It's very interesting how it works. Following is from someone in an Amazon review that explains it very well. "Ed Harris
Understanding How an Ember Mug Works Makes It Work Better!
    June 20, 2017
    Color: Black
I have had my Ember mug since November 2016 and absolutely love it, so I was curious about some of the 3 star and lower reviews. Upon reading these, it is clear that a number of purchasers (and potential purchasers) don't fully understand how the mug actually works. Ember really needs to do a much better job of explaining this (probably with a cute, animated video), but here is what is actually going on:
It looks like many people think that this is a battery operated/heated mug - not an unreasonable asasumption since you do, after all, have to charge the battery. What really happens is much more interesting. Inside the walls of the mug is something that is called a Phase Changer Material (PCM). When I brew a cup of coffee in my Keurig coffee maker directly into the mug, the initial temperature is about 175 degrees with a target of 140 degrees. What the Ember mug does is to extract the heat from the coffee and store it in the PCM. In this case, the material starts out in a waxy form and liquifies as it absorbs heat. This fairly quickly cools the coffee down to the desired temperature, but in the process the PCM becomes a heat storage "battery". Once the coffee reaches 140 degrees and starts to cool, the mug senses this and extracts heat from the PCM "battery" and uses that to maintain the temperature rather than directly heating the coffee using normal battery power.
If you understand this is how it works, then it is easy to understand why some people are not happy with the battery life. Basically, the hotter the initial temperature, the more storage capacity in the PCM "battery", and the longer it can maintain the coffee at the desired temperature. My coffee maker at my cabin is a smaller unit that requires me to brew the coffee into a measuring cup and pour it into the Ember mug. I also noticed that the initial temperature there is about 154 degrees. That means that the Ember mug at my cabin can't maintain my ideal coffee temperature for as long as it does at home because the PCM "battery" is not as fully charged. In fact, one day I got busy and forgot to pour the coffee into the Ember mug until it was just under 140 degrees. Normally I would expect the mug to quickly heat the coffee to the desired 140 degree temperature, but with essentially no PCM "battery" charge, it took longer than usual to get to the desired temperature and I am sure it would not have maintained the temperature for very long.
So, once you understand this, you will realize that want to brew directly into the mug if possible and transfer it to the charger until it is ready to drink if you can do that. If not, as soon as your coffee is brewed, make sure you transfer it into the Ember mug as soon as you can and it will be able maintain the desired temperature for the maximum period of time. If you do this, I think you will find that you will have no issues with how long the Ember mug can maintain the desired temperature."

An app controlled mug. I think I need an app controlled app. Also, app controlled clothes. In fact, I want nothing to work if I don't have internet, or forgot my account password. One fuse blows, or my phone dies, and I'll starve and freeze to death! IT'S THE FUTURE!
Edit: Sharpie? Did you forget to charge your spoon?

App-controlled clothes do exist. I have a hat that has built-in headphones. There's also a shirt that has a peltier cooler built-in. There's a backpack that has a USB charger, not sure if that counts. But I've seen T-shirts with LED screens, and I've also seen clothes that can change color or light up via app control. App-controlled spoons also exist, some count calories, others are for people with disabilities, they stabilize the spoon if your hand shakes.

That's not enough. How about book shelves that collapse if they aren't connected to the internet? A hammer that will only hammer nails with RFID's? A vinyl player that will only play records if it can find it in an online media database?
      I need it ALL!

  • @DigitalRiesNL

I've been using this version 1 Ember mug for over two years now and I love it. I use it differently though. I drink (licorice) tea and I always forget to drink it all before it gets cold. Sometimes it'll be an hour before I remember to take another sip. So this is perfect in that sense. I use it in my home office and at the actual office. I don't have a water heater in either place and with this mug, I don't need it. I just pour cold water in the mug and it'll heat up to my desired temperature. If you're like me, I can highly recommend this mug to you. Haven't tried version 2 yet but I assume it's the same type of experience.

This device has solved a problem for me too. I'm getting one thanks to you, Uncle Matt :) I am a repairer of consumer goods and computers. So many times I put my coffee down, and am so busy tinkering, by the time I remember, it's stone cold. Even a Thermos doesn't keep the temperature forever. This is cool, and as a tech lover, I want one. Thanks, Matt, everyone's favourite CZcams Uncle :)
