I have often been lost for words, when trying to describe Pentatonix's unique vocals & sound, & I still cannot express, or even come to terms, with what my ears are hearing, most times, but one thing I do know, is that, when I hear their voices, it always takes me to a place, that touches my emotions, & can make me feel things, I didn't even know existed!!! To me, that is their gift, & what makes them, not only an amazing group, but incredible artists 💝 **THEY TRULY ARE A GIFT GIFT** 💝

"Carol of the bells" sound is called "bell tones" or "arpeggio". They use that technique in a LOT of their arrangements. It adds dynamic movement to the backing vocals instead of using static chords. PTX does the bell tones more exactly than any other a cappella group and it's kind of a "signature" of their arrangements. Maybe it came from winning a Grammy award for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy which was basically all bell tones.

    Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America's Got Talent as non-competitors a couple of years after that. The members are
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range as heard during his solo); Any song between 2011 and 2017.
    Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale);
Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on CZcams, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his CZcams videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on CZcams), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on CZcams, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best-selling genre), and have had multi-platinum album sales, sold-out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.

Tall blonde is Scott Hoying : baritone, but covers bass line when bass ( Matt/ Avi) takes lead
Kirsten Maldonado (Kirsty/ rhymes with thirsty) mezzo soprano , changes styles a lot
Mitch Grassi : Counter tenor voice of an angel also changes looks a lot
Matt Sallee : bass but also has a beautiful voice. Joined the group in mid 2017
Kevin Olusola (KO) beat boxer, cello, cello-boxing (invented) also has a tenor voice. All around freak of nature.
Avi Kaplan : bass 2011-2017 he started with the group, then parted on good terms and started a solo career.

I very much considered Pentatonix, Voice Play and Home Free to be the Big Three of the Acapella world. There are tons of great artists out there, but there is nobody that can ever get the exact sound of those three. The way that they arrange to perfectly highlight each members strongest points and move the lead role throughout the whole band perfectly is amazing.

It’s great to see a reactor who is new to Pentatonix. Kirstie does have a lovely and powerful voice. For a sad Kirstie, recommend their cover of Say Something. The original bass, Avi, is in it.
Pentatonix started in 2011. Avi left in 2017 and Matt took over. This is the only change in their lineup. Mitch and Kirstie change their appearance often which confuses people.

I just subbed. Let me introduce them to you: Scott - blonde hair and beard, baritone with an amazing range. Mitch - black hair with hoop earrings, counter tenor with an incredibly high range. Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) - female, mezzo soprano. Kevin - black hair and beard, beat boxer most of the time but when he sings, like in this song, it is as a baritone / tenor. Matt - with the diamond earrings, bass, who also has an amazing range. I look forward to seeing more of your reactions to Pentatonix (aka PTX). I didn't realize TfF did this originally. This is an example of a song I never really liked (I did just check out TfF's version, too), but while I'm still not crazy about it, found the PTX version more interesting.

if you like pentatonix i think you'd really like voiceplay, they're another acappella group. their bass Geoff Castelucci is great too.

Since you mentioned "the original", you obviously know Pentatonix did it as a cover. The question is, what is it a cover of? Do you know it as a cover of the theme song of the 2003 movie _Donnie Darko_ ? Or as a cover of the actual original by Tears for Fears (TfF) in 1982? While the lyrics are the same, Gary Jules and Michael Andrews completely re-orchestrated it for the movie, giving it the slow, haunting melody most people are familiar with today. TfF released it with a fast, poppy beat and Caribbean flair, and the two sound completely different. Until I started watching reactions on CZcams, I only knew about the movie version. The first time I heard TfF's version I did not like it very much, but it has since grown on me. If you are unaware of it, I suggest reacting to it as well.⬅
That all said, Pentatonix' cover of _Mad World_ is my favorite. I was pretty sure at the outset that you would be giving it a 9 or 10 rating.🥲

Friendly word of advice. When listening to a new PTX song for the first time avoid beverages or risk choking when they gut punch or Mitch slap you with a sudden crystal shattering high note or speaker blowing bass note. They come at you out of nowhere...so don't blink or even take your eyes off the screen for a second. Just sayin'!

Hey salty I got a lil question, Ik u probably have a ton of reaction requests and might not get to doing this but I thought I could maybe at least drop a comment cus it’s a very very heavy hitting and important song for me. It’s called “Teardrops” by the band Bring me the horizon.
The lyrics and music video of that song really puts a sound and a visual on the way I’ve been seeing and living my life the past few years (all my teen years sadly, you’re gonna understand if u see it) and I would greatly appreciate your take on seeing it wether you like it or not.
Thanks a lot for your time, love your reactions man.

Yo Dema!! I am actually quite familiar with the song. Listen to it myself preiodically. Speaks directly to my low points - where I find myself at times. The lows can last for moments, or can last for long periods that just get heavier and feel like they will never end. For me, the song is a solid reminder that I am not alone in my thoughts and feelings. And it definitely helps.

I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on some music from some anime. It's definitely a totally different type of music from what you usually react to but anime music reactions have been a hot topic lately on CZcams and you may enjoy it. My personal recommendation is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure openings 1-13 or Attack on Titan openings 1-7

I prefer the original though I don't know who it is. I, in no way am denying they have ridiculous talent. They do. I just prefer the original. Music, like any other art is subjective.
