Hi All, Thanks for watching us two again.. just to clarify BP1 meant "Production" and not "Auto-tune" to save some comments and people getting mad at us, we don't know all the technical terms and that's what popped into his head at the time... Hope you enjoy it and thank you all for watching!!!

It’s not autotune, I think the word you’re looking for is reverb. Which, yes, they do add reverb in some of their songs. But auto tune I think they’ve only ever used in the recent 90s dance medley for the Cher song.

They just sang "Seasons of Love" in the Public Broadcasting annual Fourth of July celebration television special, and it was super! It's a live recording, and it's even better than their original cover of this song, which was a studio produced cover of the song from the musical "Rent." Filmed on a roof top in LA with backing singers, it's really spectacular! (Also of note, their cover of this song appeared first on their 2020 Christmas album, an example of something they have done all along on their Christmas albums, bring in songs that can be interpreted as congruent with the season, even though not originally or usually considered Christmas-y.)

I love Pentatonix, I was first introduced to them through their acapella work with Dolly Parton covering her own track Jolene. It's magical. I think you may be right in regards to auto-tuning for the video production, it also sounds like they play multiple voice tracks overlapping to create a bigger sound, almost like a cathedral hall performance. I'm no expert in the studio at all but I'm developing an ear for it.

But I heard a lot of those bands on the radio and at the disco, of course. Looking back, a lot of it is very nostalgic, but there came a time where I realized some things were just fantastic in their own way. And of course, there were always friends who were fans of one act or the other. Do you remember Orchestral Manouvres In The Dark? I had a friend who listened to punk rock, but somehow became an OMD fan as well. So I heard a lot of their music. Tears for Fears released _Mad World_ in 1982 -- same words but with a fast, poppy beat and Caribbean flair. The movie _Donnie Darko_ (2001) used it as a theme song, but completely redid the melody. Michael Andrews and Gary Jules are credited with the update to a slow and haunting song. Gary Jules sang it, and a lot of folks don't even realize that this was not the original. Most covers from that point, including Pentatonix', are of the Andrews/Jules version.

Greetings from Canada. I came for Angelina Jordan and stayed for Pentatonix. I first discovered them on NBC's "The Sing" years ago. (which they won) I couldn't believe what I was hearing live. I still have trouble wrapping my head around it sometimes. The thing is, of all the songs they've done, there is still nothing that blows me away as much as their version of Hallelujah. If you want an earlier Pentatonix with Avi, may I respectfully suggest that you investigate their rendition of the Carol of the Bells? Yes, it's out of holiday season, and no, it's not one of their best, but what I absolutely adore about it as someone who has studied music theory is that the piece utilizes historical rules of Four Voice Counterpoint. The intro is Counterpoint, the melody switches to Melody & Harmony in the modern arrangement style, and then the piece ends with a full-blown example of the SATB Counterpoint. It's one of the few modern arrangements of anything where the musicians use Counterpoint, because it tends to feel very old fashioned now, but back in the days when Mozart and Beethoven were composing, if you didn't write intricate Counterpoint, no one took you seriously as a composer. (They even threw in the old Church superstition that it is offensive to God to end a piece in a minor key, and at the end resolve major.)
Again, not incredibly popular today, but it's an excellent demonstration of their mastery of historical forms, the same way that Picasso's early works were photo-realistic, buying him the credibility to go off and 'regress' into cubist forms. Carol of the Bells.

@@BritPopsReact LOL. Sorry. Nerded out there for a bit. Simplest way? Modern music uses one Melody over top of three or more voices singing chords that support that melodic line as the harmony. Think of any pop song. The chorus sings the harmony, the lead singer sings the melody.
Back in Mozart's day, musicians used a different way of writing music. Each vocal range in the chorus (sopranos, altos, tenors, basses -SATB) had their own melody. They were separate melodies in themselves. And when you put them all together, those separate melodies had to fit together so they hit the chords and made harmonies to each other, while all four were being solos. That's called "Counterpoint".
Modern stuff is like a single strand of rope. Counterpoint is a rope made entirely of individual complex braids. It's an old fashioned style now, because we associate the very sound of it with Classical music from Mozart's time, but when modern groups (like PTX) do it, it can be impressive AF because it's like musical sudoku.
Anyway, take a gander at their Carol of the Bells. The very end part is pure Counterpoint. When they sing the carol part it's modern Melody/Harmony. You'll hear the difference!

But that is considered such a Christmas thing now. It can all wait. Do they synth or not? I have never seen a get-together or back stage of Mad World. That is the only way to tell when they are off mic. Watching the back stage of Love Again & others, you tend to think they can do it all off mic too. I heard them do the glitch effects from Daft Punk off mic. I always thought that was post production. So it is really hard to tell sometimes unless it is really obvious. Okay, after hearing all your comments about 'autotune' and the like, (I know you meant 'sound production,' and yes, they do use a little to balance the levels between them, but nothing to actually alter the sounds they make - Mitch can certainly do reverb on his voice naturally,) you REALLY need to listen to some of their live performances, if only to dispel that idea (the only song they've ever used autotune on was their recent dance medley, in homage to Cher and the other artists who used autotune on their originals.) There are live versions of 'Hallelujah,' their recent original 'Coffee in Bed,' 'Aha!' at the Singapore Vista (filmed by a fan at one of their live concerts - it's a phone cam that focuses a lot on Mitch, but it's good quality.) There's also a live version of their Daft Punk melody, and several of their 'Evolution of...' videos, where it's literally just the five of them from the Avi Days siting in front of a camera and doing a one-take performance (I can recommend 'Evolution of Music,' 'Evolution of Rihanna,' 'Evolution of Michael Jackson' to get you started...)

There's also sound of silence and to complete the trifecta, Of course Simon and Garfunkel being the original singers, is disturbed's version of sound of silence. With imagine you get to hear what is called the wall of sound for Pentatonix. As everybody has said it's always Christmas time for Pentatonix and once again to hear the "wall of sound" Produced by there harmonies you want to listen to Mary did you know. Most people start with hallelujah which really isn't a Christmas song but that's where you'll find it. It has a about 650,000,000 views now. Then watch the live version from a Christmas Special of Pentatonix and you'll see that they do not sound any different. They never do a song in studio that they cannot reproduce live. There's also a studio and then live version of sing (an original), seasons of love from rent And Aha. The official video was made early on in their career and then you want to listen to Aha Live at Singapore the star vista. There maybe others but those are the ones I know off the top of my head And somebody already mentioned daft punk.

A couple of the places you think is autotuned is actually two people starting off one the same note and at the end one goes off note by a 3rd and one goes off by a 5th. So it sounds like production. When it is just amazing talent. And for the point of doing a review of same song by other artist and then PTX version show cases the different interpretations. Like Sound of Silence as done by Disturbed and PTX they are both amazing but one does not detract from the other.

I'm not particularly turned off by the autotune in this. It's at least tastefully done, although I do have to say there's a lot on this one. They've spent 10 years proving they don't need autotune to sing on pitch. They DID use autotune on a recent medley, but that was an homage to Cher, who pioneered using autotune in pop music.
