Thanks for these great instructions. I am building one now. Very much appreciated!
Hope you enjoy it!
Let me know how you did-
I saw a video of this puzzle, and wanted to figure out how it works, and look at this.. Your very recent video publishing how it works! You have inspired me to get into working to make this box. Might take me a while. Thank you.
Don't plan on doing it in 1 day. It takes me abut a week to make one. If you have any questions, let me know. Hopefully my video covered it all.
Thanks for the tutorial. I made a laser cut version of your dice box and it works very nice. I like the pic by pic that you showed, that was a big help.
Do you have a picture or video on it? I always enjoy watching how others make things.
@@MarkJonesRanger I sent you an email with pics. I figured out how to resolve the shake release.
No, I don't
I didn't have that problem, but like to know why the release. What was done?
I think Jeff is still working on it. His new design had some hangup issues.
I have 10 boxes ready to put the slides into out in the shop. So I will be fine tuning them today. I was thinking of adding a small ball (airsoft pellet) into slide 1 slot that would keep the shakers at bay... As it is I have made 21 of these boxes and they are a major hit. Great design.
Here is Jeff's prototype design. He is still working on it.

Very nice job !
Thank you very much!
I'm about to make one. question: "What if I put the puzzle down on a mid number side, or put it away without fully locking it back to "one"? In other words does the box then need to be started where it was laid down or how it was put away? Or doe sit need to be in "one" somehow?
To get it to reset completely go back to 1 and start it again. Then reverse it to lock it up tight again. Other wise a simple bump or shake will open it up. I really like these boxes and they are a big hit. Fun to make.
MarkJonesRanger,
You are right on how to reset box.
I'm glad they are a hit for you and that they are fun for you to make.
Hopefully I didn't make the video to hard to follow.
I tried to cover everything I thought was needed.
Did I miss anything?
John
Thanks John for sharing this with us. You did a great job on video and explaining this project. Straight to the point and the tips you shared were big help in getting it all to go together. Christmas is coming up fast!!! I have 12 sets of raw materials ready for the CNC to start cutting them out. While the CNC cuts these parts out I need to get some walnut and maple out of the shed to make up 4 more box outsides. After giving out 8 of these I added a star over the tab and a moon opposite the star and added a tip that gravity counts to tap the star to close and tap the moon to open. Here is some of the sets of 6 that I have added to the outside of the boxes instead of the dice holes.

takes about 3 hours to make one of these. I have them jigged up for the CNC so I can just drop in a piece of material and it will cut the parts out. It saves time but becomes work if I cut all the parts for 12 boxes out at one time then move on to the next parts. Insidebox, Slots and top, Slides, outside box hardwoods then install the slides in the top.
Good stuff keep up the good job on these videos and design tips. You inspired me greatly to get this project out!
I'm on my third one of these now and I have a question. It seems like my boxes will come unlocked just by shaking the box. If there was a way to prevent slider #1 from moving, except when you want it to, I think this would cure the problem. Have you experienced any issues like this? And if so, what did you do to correct it?
I thought about adding a pin on slide one to keep it locked.
If your dice is opening just by shaking it, then you have the sliders too sloppy. They need to fit close when engaged. There isn't much tolerance. I tried to explain that in the video, maybe I didn't do that good of a job at that point. I assume if you shake the dice enough, it may open. I tested the ones I made and they all stay locked. Hope this helps. John
By adding a pin, it would defeat the purpose.
You can always relock the dice before giving to someone to try.
Tell them not to shake, just turn.
In slide 1 I figured I could drill one 5/16" by 5/16" hole in the top even with the bottom of slide 1 when it's in the locked position. Add a ball bearing 1/4" in size and it will roll around in that slot and keep it locked unless you move the ball bearing into the 5/16" hole. Then this would allow the slides to unlock by shaking it... However if they try and shake it to open it...this ball bearing will keep it locked until they tip the dice up on 6. I am making about 12 more this week. Gave the other 8 out as gifts. They really enjoy these boxes. Here is a video on the first 9 I made. czcams.com/video/UOgUcyp9F00/video.html
I'm wondering if on the tab #1 that goes into slider #2, if you put a small taper on it, shaking it would draw it tighter, but plopping it would still release it?
Do you sell them?
No, but you can buy on line
Search on line "Wood Dice Puzzle Box". They are about $175.00.
How much for you to make me 1?
Sorry, but I don't make them to sell.
Here's my version of the puzzle box. I was able to resolve the "shake to solve" issue that some have had. Thanks JW for the instructions. czcams.com/video/DuKgEETwaAc/video.html
I like it, good job. Glad to see people make it.
