Great job, very well made. A tip from a magician who uses these type of boxes for over forty years: Work the other way around. Show the box empty first, then let something appear. The more the better. Flags, sweets, anything flashy or colourfull. That is impossible, it was empty, so surprise-effect. That way nobody suspects the box and they all focus on the flags/sweets, you then just put the box away. If you vanish something they want to see the box, because they see it as a puzzle and the box must have something to do with it. Our audience is not stupid. If you just show an empty box , snap your fingers and fill it with sweets/flags they don't get the time to think and now they can see, feel and even eat whatever you produced. (make sure to produce only edible flags.).
Excelente proyecto!
Sweet! Thank you, sir! I am a Toys For Tots Coordinator and I will make a bunch of these to give to the children I serve. What kid doesn't want to be a Magician.
Very good video. I wonder if there is a way to have a hidden button or something else instead of the hole to use to expose the second box. I'll have to work on that.
This is an excellent woodworking video. Too many woodworking videos use high speed playback which is just contradicting the art of woodworking. Besides, the explanation and narration was very clear, as was the video quality of the recording.
Curious as to where you found the instructions for building this? Excellent explanation. As another magician, I agree with the earlier remark that it is far better to make something appear, hopefully in a magic act - not one on one. If you fail to heed this, the secret will be penetrated.
Very cool box! I thought the solution was indeed something like that. Love the way you explain everything. Trying to follow but 1/4 of an inch..... So complex. How many Milimeters is that? Sorry i live in the Netherlands. 😅
Thank you for your comment. I am happy I can share my joy of woodworking with other parts of the world. I agree the metric system is sinpler, but I live in the United States. I'm sure Google can convert the dimensions for you.
Google will give you an exact answer for conversions but that could lead to the boxes having awkward dimensions, where you have to round up or down correctly in each instance to get each box to fit inside the other. An easier way is to look at what materials you have at hand and scale from them. For example, if you only have 4mm and 8mm plywood then for every 1/8 inches given anywhere in the measurements, replace it with 4mm (so that 1/4 inch becomes 8mm, 2 inches becomes 6.4cm, etc, even though in the real world 2 inches = 5.08cm). If you have 3mm and 6mm plywood available, you'd use 1/8 inch to 3mm as your scale factor (2 inches becomes 4.8cm, etc).
I think it would be cooler if it was done vice versa, if possible. Where you have to have your thumb in the whole to get the belongings. Like a secret drawer, so when someone is snooping they just see an empty drawer. I was definitely intrigued I'll have to make one to trick some family members! 😂
@@RonMulletWoodwork not a problem. I'm glad you showed how it worked at the end. It reminded me of my favorite "magic" trick from when I was a kid: a disappearing coin box. You put a coin in a slot then close the box, which pushes (slides) the coin into a hidden compartment within the box. When you open it again, the coin isn't there. And to magically make it reappear, you have to turn the box around without your audience noticing, open the box from the other side and voila! The coin has reappeared! It was my favorite trick because I didn't have to do any sleight of hand movements. My fingers were (and still are) too short to get that to work. Anyway, your box is a lot better not only because of the quality but also because you can make larger things "disappear" besides just coins. This is definitely on my wish list of "to-do" items. I have to get more tools (especially a saw) before I'll be able to try making though. 🙂
There’s an old principle in magic, that everything is there for a reason. (If you could perform the illusion without something, you would.) That’s the essence of the black paint. The black obscures the differences in grain for the inner and more-inner boxes. And going with matte finish ensures that quirks of light and reflection don’t give anything away.
Ron am I crazy or is the inside box also 1/4 in the video? I built mine spot on using 1/8 for the inside and it’s got a little more play inside the big box.
Thank you for watching. The inside box thickness is slightly more than 1/8". What is important is to make the inside box just slightly smaller overall for a loose fit.

I'll never understand why the US still uses the imperial system. Metric ist much more precise and logical. I could may understand if imperial were an independent system, but its completly standardized on the metric system. Thats so ridiculous.....
96 % of the world's population uses metric measurements. NINETY SIX PERCENT. Your channel goes out to the whole world. Is the USA perhaps just a little bit insular do you think? Just asking!
Yes indeed, there's all those countries of the world that use the metric system... and then there's that one country that has landed men on the moon! :)

Gustav. Thank you so very much for that amazing tip. It makes so much sense. Thank you for watching and good luck to your journey as a magician.
This blew my mind, such a subtle alteration, but makes soo much sense.
It started off simple, then got more complicated!
As person who builds magic equipment for a living, you do a great and clear job of explaining the construction process.
Thank you for watching. I appreciate your comment.
Brilliant! Loved it so very much, once I get set up this will be one of my early builds, thank you.

A lot of people could follow your type of CZcams video, short introduction and extremely detailed explanations. Reminiscent of Norm Abram.
Thank you. An honor to be compared to Norm.
You're a good man ,Ron. Keep up the great work.

I'm impressed. I wish I had the tools, time, and patience to make one.
If you'd ever decide to sell one, let me know.
Thank you Steven.
neat plan, thank you.I was expecting a clip to engage when you fully closed the box, this was more simple and foolproof

@RonMulletWoodwork I have shared your video with 800 plus other Coordinators in the hopes that some of them like woodcraft as well.
Thank you.
Thank you, I really enjoyed watching and listening to you work. I’ve also subscribed because, how would an American say it? I like your style! 😉👍
Thank you for watching and subscribing.
Nice I couldn’t figure out what happened to the second plywood box when you moved on to the oak . Until the end😂 fooled me
Thank you for watching Joe.
Great job alot of fun 😊
Thank you.
Great video can you tell me what length and gauge Brad you are using?
Thank you for watching. 1/2 in x 23 guage.
Nice fun project
Thank you Stephen.
It is a magic! And nice woodworking job!
Thank you.
Very good video. I wonder if there is a way to have a hidden button or something else instead of the hole to use to expose the second box. I'll have to work on that.
Thanks for watching. That sounds like a good idea. I hope you come up with something.
I would think you could do that with magnets somehow.
My exact thought. Something more hidden than a big hole in the bottom. If you come up with something please let us know.
That is very cool. Thank you
Thank you for watching Andrew.
Great explanation, clear and precise , were you a teacher? You would make a good wood shop teacher.
Thank you Larry. I have never been a teacher but my hope for my CZcams channel is to teach others the Joy of Woodworking.

Thank you for watching. It was in a woodworking magizine. Thank you for your advise. I tried the trick the other way and it worked way better.
Nice video. I don't buy wipe on poly as it is silly expensive compared to taking full poly and thinning 50/50.
Thank you Larry. I agree, but I only use it for small box projects. It is more convenient.

I use the Wipe on poly, and sand between coats using a piece of brown paper bag. Finish comes out smooth as glass.
Thank you for watching. It works really well.
Love it! Do you sell these? I may give it a shot making one?
I only made 5. Thank you.
@@RonMulletWoodwork Thank you. Nice work!

It was easy to make and you will definitely suprise your family.
If you want to do that, you could fit a catch in place of the thumb hole so that pressure on the catch releases the secret drawer.
Looks great, now do a zig-zag illusion :D
Thank you for watching the video and commenting.
15:25 "I'm sure most of you have figured out how all this works anyway."
*Me:* Still trying to figure out how it works. Lol

put a guard on that circular saw or you will have to magic up some new fingers
You're right. It is always safer with the guards.
Love your woodworkery, but you play fast and loose with the witchcraft. Stay safe.
I will beware. Thank you for watching Kevin.
Love the box and the trick, but it’s disappearing not ‘dissapearing’ … really sorry. It’s an easy mistake to make 👍
Thank you for watching. Thank you for pointing that out. I never noticed it.
No Beeswax? Soap works too in a pinch.
Thanks for watching. I agree completely.
I still do not understand the placing of the finger has the magic effect !!
