You can always put a channel on the other side of sanding block, make second tongue and use a half sheet of sandpaper. In fact, that is a new idea, make larger channel and can be used for thicker sandpaper like 100 and 80 grit full sheet. I like that, may do that. Thanks JW

I think Jeff is still working on it. His new design had some hangup issues. I have 10 boxes ready to put the slides into out in the shop. So I will be fine tuning them today. I was thinking of adding a small ball (airsoft pellet) into slide 1 slot that would keep the shakers at bay... As it is I have made 21 of these boxes and they are a major hit. Great design. To get it to reset completely go back to 1 and start it again. Then reverse it to lock it up tight again. Other wise a simple bump or shake will open it up. I really like these boxes and they are a big hit. Fun to make.

Thanks John for sharing this with us. You did a great job on video and explaining this project. Straight to the point and the tips you shared were big help in getting it all to go together. Christmas is coming up fast!!! I have 12 sets of raw materials ready for the CNC to start cutting them out. While the CNC cuts these parts out I need to get some walnut and maple out of the shed to make up 4 more box outsides. After giving out 8 of these I added a star over the tab and a moon opposite the star and added a tip that gravity counts to tap the star to close and tap the moon to open. Here is some of the sets of 6 that I have added to the outside of the boxes instead of the dice holes. or Days of the week. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday or fruits of the Spirit Love Joy Peace Patience Kindness Goodness or months in the year Jan Feb Mar April May June or plagues in the bible Water to Blood Frogs Nats Flies Livestock Boils or in 3 families of 6 I used the names in order Dad, Mom, Kids 1-4. also Laser engraved this on the bottom of the box. Small print, Hint 1-6 6-1 What is first can go last. What is last can go first. Make a list. Tap the Stars to Close Follow the Moon to Open takes about 3 hours to make one of these. I have them jigged up for the CNC so I can just drop in a piece of material and it will cut the parts out. It saves time but becomes work if I cut all the parts for 12 boxes out at one time then move on to the next parts. Insidebox, Slots and top, Slides, outside box hardwoods then install the slides in the top. Good stuff keep up the good job on these videos and design tips. You inspired me greatly to get this project out!

If your dice is opening just by shaking it, then you have the sliders too sloppy. They need to fit close when engaged. There isn't much tolerance. I tried to explain that in the video, maybe I didn't do that good of a job at that point. I assume if you shake the dice enough, it may open. I tested the ones I made and they all stay locked. Hope this helps. John

By adding a pin, it would defeat the purpose. You can always relock the dice before giving to someone to try. Tell them not to shake, just turn.

In slide 1 I figured I could drill one 5/16" by 5/16" hole in the top even with the bottom of slide 1 when it's in the locked position. Add a ball bearing 1/4" in size and it will roll around in that slot and keep it locked unless you move the ball bearing into the 5/16" hole. Then this would allow the slides to unlock by shaking it... However if they try and shake it to open it...this ball bearing will keep it locked until they tip the dice up on 6. I'm wondering if on the tab #1 that goes into slider #2, if you put a small taper on it, shaking it would draw it tighter, but plopping it would still release it?

Cut these out yesterday. Need tweak a few parts as always.

Working on 8 of these. Got all the inside parts assembled today and the slides all sanded and ready to go in the outside box jointed box. While the CNC was cutting the parts I was able to sand the parts and while the CNC was vcarving the text and stars (I added stars where the slides are located so if you want to lock it dip towards the star and tap and if you want to open it dip away from the star and give it a tap. I also added a Hint. To side 3 Bottom. Burnt it in with a laser. Hint: 1-6 6-1 What is first can go last. What is last can go first. Make a list. I am using numerical lists of 6 that can be identified as first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth. Family, Books of the Bible, Ranger Code all they have to do is figure out what the names are create a list 1-6 and then turn it like you do a dice. Also on the bottom of side 3 on the outside box the box is a 6 sided box jointed box that the inner box slips into like a glove. I put in 2 brass screws so the box could be taken apart by pulling the bottom off by unscrewing the 2 screws and working the box joints loose and then the inner box will slip out. (it will when I make them but time may cause them to friction fit tight). Will find out. The slides are all sanded to 320 grit and they work great. Made a Lexan box so I could watch all the slides in action as a teaching aid. I have been having a whole lot of fun in the shop jigging this all up and recording it. It's fun. I was out in the shop 6 hours yesterday and 6 today cutting out these parts. Will spend another 6 hours tomorrow finishing up with some new vcarve texts. Wifes family and my daughters family. 2 of these will go up to a Territorial Rendezvous in Illinois as a gift or trade item or for Fundraiser for the event. Last few years since I retired there has been many projects like this that help our Church Scouting Program provide for boys to develop to be better men. Wow. I have 7 of these on the Kitchen Table with 5 more out in the shop. I have been fine tuning the slides and installing them in the boxes. My first two didn't work when I put them in the boxes.... After some tweaking slight sanding here and there they are all working now. Here is a hour long video on what John Witt inspired me to do. Thanks John! There are a bunch of Royal Ranger leaders that are going to get a really cool Christmas gift this year. I am using names instead of numbers so they have to know the order of the names.
