❤ For those who don't know, this race was special for three reasons: *1.* This was the closest finish in Formula One history - for Top 2, Top 3, Top 4, and Top 5. 1 Peter Gethin (Great Britain) BRM 1:18:12.60 2 Ronnie Peterson (Sweden) March-Ford +0.01 s 3 Francois Cevert (France) Tyrrell-Ford +0.09 s 4 Mike Hailwood (Great Britain) Surtees-Ford +0.18 s 5 Howden Ganley (New Zealand) BRM +0.61 s Then there was a gap of over 31 seconds. *2.* With an average speed of 242.615 km/h (150.754 mph), this race stood as the fastest-ever Formula One race for 32 years, until the 2003 Italian Grand Prix at Monza (Michael Schumacher, Ferrari, 247.585 km/h (153.842 mph), 1:14:19.838 - also the shortest *full-distance* F1 race ever - in 2023, they only did 51 laps because of Yuki Tsunoda's engine failure, so 1:13:41.143 doesn't really count as much). *3.* In qualifying, Chris Amon got pole position (1:22.40) in his Matra by setting the (then) fastest lap of all time at 251.214 km/h (156.097 mph)! Next year, two chicanes were added for safety reasons.

Sad thing is the drivers these days could not drive this closely for lap after lap without crashing..... Vettel only needs to try once and he takes someone out...... :D
After all these years or rewatching this video, I have discovered why Peterson lost it. Look at frames 5:20 to 5:22. Peterson is losing the left rear of his car and correcting his wheel to the left due to a very loose rear end; all due to swinging across the front of Cevert to block him and missing the proper breaking point and line- without knowing that Gethin is storming through very low, out of the normal groove, but on the inside line. The correction and loose end causes him to loose speed coming out of Lesmo and on to the straight, so Gethin, totally red-lining the engine (he said he did), powers by and wins. It is, along with Monaco 1970, the greatest race I've ever seen. Totally different cars, different engines, different designs, loud engines, hug tires- all racing should be. Instead, today, we've got tires intentionally designed to loose massive grip if run at their near limit for a few laps, cars that all look the same, skinny childish looking tires, and a total package that looks like and sounds like electric slot cars on a Scalextric track. Any wonder why so many F-1 fans don't like it any more? It's become a joke.
Yup, Peterson himself said it. His only concern was to block Cevert from beating him on the outside of Parabolica. It's not that he didn't see Gethin, he thought he would not be able to keep his momentum breaking so deep inside (Gethin's car has two wheels on the concrete pavement). But I could not disagree more on modern F1. It's as good as it's ever been, and all the limits on tire wear make it better, not worse. The worst F1 was that of '92 -with the robot cars that drove themselves.
