New BMW M135i Review: Have they ruined the hot 1 Series?

  • Here's Rory's review of the new 2019 BMW M135i. Be warned though, it's nothing like the previous hot 1 Series. This one is all-wheel-drive instead of rear-wheel-drive, has a ton more space in the back and boot, and drives completely differently. It also has a ridiculous amount of fancy tech. But have these changes spoiled one of the most charming hot hatches of recent times? Here, we check the interior, acceleration, boot space, rear seats and more.

    Currently driving one from my local dealer on test drive, your review is spot on. The standard kit is high, but that car you have has a tech pack and pan roof plus I suspect comfort pack (powered boot) which makes that car more like £42k new. That self park system is incredible but better still is that head up display in the tech pack and those adaptive LED headlights which at night time are unbelievable. I used to have the older shape m135i and do miss the 6cyl engine, but today in the uk it's raining (as usual!) and I launched it off the line full power, no slip at all. You definitely could only do that in my old car if it was a warm day and dry. Great review Rory, I'm very impressed with how much it's moved on as a car and feels much more refined than the older model I had and loved.

I have enjoyed the near 400bhp that my RS gave me but approaching 50 I am a sucker for tech and comfort having driven alot of the hot hatches you cant really open them up on the roads anymore. However I am still an aesthetics man and a car has to look good so add a bodykit to this from the likes of Lightweight Performance in Germany and you have a fab looking car that fulfills my needs - I'm tempted...very tempted!

    People keep talking about this rwd thing like they drift all day. Fun it is. But as soon as the road is not dry, you have to be realistic. You can’t floor it on high speeds like an awd and fwd. it just loses control.
    In places like the uk. That’s nearly every day your being held back.
    Watch the top gear episode where clarkson compares the 1 series vs the golf gti and you then tell me if that is not part of the reason why bmw didn’t switch up

    The thing is you have to go straight to the m135i now as it can bat off some of the moaners. However the beauty of the old 1 series was regardless of whether it was a 114i or a 125d the most basic model drove amazingly due to a great Rwd chassis. That’s the biggest issue, now all the cooking models are FWD they lost their DNA and what BMW have been built on. I’ll stick with my old 130i for fun, but wish BMW would be honest and not ignore the fact they binned their own DNA

    • @danoV1c
      @danoV1c Před 4 lety +4

      You do understand people dont want rwd right? If they did bmw woudnt have switched to fwd, im sure its cool to have a light 3.0 bimmer with rwd, but it just doesnt sell as much as they want it to. Im sure BMW has done their research before making such a dramatic change. They dont live off youtube comments praisal about how fun their cars are, but from actual people who buy them, which are in most cases families that just want a normal and safe hatchback but with a BMW badge. Its washed down for them, and for purists you can still buy M240i/M2 with a manual and strict RWD.

    • @bestduckyrblx2944
      @bestduckyrblx2944 Před 3 lety +4

      @@Omgiamsotriggered nah don't overcomplicate it, they just want to compete (innecessarily) with the likes of ford focus and kia cee'd by making a hatchback focused on space for the whole family rather than a car focused on driving dynamics. truly a loss of identity for the brand.

    Seeing BMW as a posh badge instead of a drivers car is what has ruined their cars over the last decade, this is an abomination.
    My first car was an old 118i and I loved it, now as a wealthier adult I’m the prime candidate to return to the brand and buy something expensive and fast from them, but looking at crap like this there’s no way. I need a manual, I need a real handbrake, I need a low driving position, and I need RWD. So it’s old used BMWs then, so the company isn’t seeing any of that cash is it.
    In this review Rory misses the key factor which is the transverse mounted engine, unlike the AWD M5 which is a longitudinal like every BMW should be.

    Great review and my new favourite which I never thought I would say after top gear so well done. I think the original m135i was an accidental hero turned chav car by the under 25 year olds who could suddenly afford the cheap leasing deals banded about. This is far more sensible and realistic and no different to the competition apart from it could just be the best 4 pot excluding maybe the new A45. Looks much better in real life as well.

      I’m currently a owner of a one series 62 plate, but the kids in the back always complain about the legroom, and running cables usb front to back.
      I was excited with the launch date, but once I visited the bmw showroom, the price was extremely high.

      @John Rock No taste, based on what? And unless you guys designed the thing, there's no need to get offended. My E30 M3 - and the other performance BMW's of the '80s and 80s - were far more elegantly designed cars than this M135i and its predecessor… my opinion!

    I actually like the new 1 series. Ok it doesn’t have the amazing rear wheel drive platform and the sizzling N58 engine option but this new generation has seriously grown on me. Saw a 118d at BMW Cooper Reading and really liked it

    Interesting...talking to one of the BMW guys near me recently - (hes worked for them since 88 and races in his spare time) he said it was the most capable and fun car he's driven by BMW for a long time. I've just sold my M4...it was lots of fun but but even with electronics was far too much for most UK road conditions especially in the wet. I've driven the Golf R and found it dull...i think this will be a bit more lively...would love to try it.

    You know why the old one was better? The old one was RWD and was the only car in its class to get a 6 cylinder. Want AWD? You can get it but it’s rear biased so that you can still slide it if you want to.
    And the fun fact is that fun was available on the entry level model too, just the 116d was FWD. I talked with a seller, and he told me exactly what I thought: BMW’s client base is not impressed by this move, but only time will tell if BMW made the right move. They did the same with the X1: I own the old one, xdrive 25d and I can tell you: it slides. New one? FWD biased AWD. And if this rumored 2 Series Coupe comes out on a similar platform, that’s gonna be even more disappointing
    I am not mad though, they still sell the marvelous 2 Series

    "It may not be the car most of us want....but it may be the car most of us need". Accurate statement. I've been struggling to make a decision to purchase the M140i or the M135i-X...and every time I sit in the back on the M140i it dulls the desire to own it. Me personally....I need the rear space and as much I love the performance on the M140i I know purchasing it will be the wrong decision.
