I tried to get hold of an Audi A3 Sport, had it spec’d from new as a factory order. Couldn’t afford some of the more premium options as I wanted to keep monthly’s below £320… got the deal in writing, took it down the road to Sytner and they offered me an M Sport with the options I wanted from Audi for a little bit cheaper, part ex, same deposit (less than 10% OTR price). Don’t take the first deal you get, always be willing to walk away, and remember that every dealership wants to steal customers from rivals. Thanks for the great review, as always!

The BMW would’ve have costed much more than the base price as BMW options are usually quite cheap. At least compared to Mercedes-Benz or Audi. Something like adaptive cruise control might only be 600 quid with BMW and could be part of a 2700 quid package with Audi or Mercedes. With bmw they let you pick packages but you also get to pick and choose features you want. So you aren’t paying for features you won’t even be using (like gesture control etc.)

I understand and see what your saying. Well said. I also agree that it also is the first RS3 that is much better to drive. But that 5 cylinder... Sweet music and the easy ability to get some serious power! I guess after seeing some other videos of how much people liked the new RS3, (based on the comments you made) it was the ultimate RS3, (as I also like the exterior changes). All in all it comes back to the engine. That's the feel and the sound that will bring a smile to your face time after time. The interior, something you get used to, (like it or not). My A6 is a TDI. I wanted the diesel this time so that's my daily driver. With a simple software upgrade I'm at 283HP and 515 TRQ at 1750 RPM. 0-60 in 5 seconds yet get 42 MPG on the hwy. Let me know what you decide to do. IMO you won't go wrong with any of those choices!

All the sensors are on the new model eg for pre-sense, as well as the throttle control, but for some reason this option is no longer available. Just normal cruise control. I have quite a good Garmin navigation system which has excellent voice recognition. This is useful you want to know when is the next service area or the nearest Waitrose, without stopping to touch the screen. Why don't the manufacturers pick the best systems rather installing their own, more expensive and inferior systems?

If it’s on finance then residual value and desirability at resale is often more important than cheaper OTR price. German badges depreciate less and offer higher likelihood of building equity ahead of the contract end-date. It’s why APR values on “less-premium” models tend to be higher in this category. Something to consider.

Interesting comparison BUT you missed the most important part - what do they drive like? Anyone can compare features and these also vary wildly from country to country.

Great info and review Rory. As a BMW fan boy, the Audi just looks so much better, but you can bet you're bottom dollar the BMW drives better on a twisty B road. The Audi A3 is the king of understeer.

Cruise control is standard on the 1 Series though. You only have to pay extra for the ACC (automatic cruse control) which also keeps the distance to the car in front of you. Guess that only works with an automatic.

You forgot a major one - Audi is touchscreen only, there no knob anymore. BMW has the idrive knob in addition to having a touchscreen. A knob is much safer and easier to use whilst driving.

@@airmax90_king93 To be fair, there are at least 100 other comparisons between the M140i and the S3 on youtube, it's been done to death.
I do wonder why this review makes a big deal of the difference in performance between them, I mean, who buys a base model car and considers performance ?
It's all about running costs, fuel efficiency, service costs, parts, etc.

I think because he said sport trim, so only wants the cosmetic and technology upgrades, because once you start doing more performance stuff the comparison breaks down

The pricing on the BMW is better. That alone will attract a lot of premium car buyers.
Audi & Mercedes need to improve that alone!
We recently bought a BMW 1 Series 118i M-Sport, in Storm Bay metallic, with full leather, 19in alloy wheel upgrade, Comfort pack & M-Sport Pro Pack.
The interior is absolutely outstanding & must be the best in its class, the build quality is excellent & closely resembles the 4 Series interiors, that’s how much BMW have upgraded the interiors in the current 1 Series. It’s certainly very premium.
I would recommend the BMW in many ways, but Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess!!
