- Rory straps informs a review of the latest BMW 2 Series in the form of the top-dog M240i. This car packs more power than an M2 and costs significantly less. Is this the ideal M car for people on a budget?

For most people this car makes more sense an M2 or a Supra for that matter. It's fast but less extreme than those cars, and still a good daily driver thats still fun to drive and handles well. Alot of people don't assess their driving skill before buying a performance car or the fact they'll never see a race track 99% of the time.
This car will depreciate way more than the M2. Something to keep in mind.
More expensive than used m2, less fun and def uglier. I agree though the argument of lap times can go out the window for most people.
You’re right. It’s a daily driver and good for this. But so far away in driving pleasure from the M2 that you can’t even describe it.
How do you know this? Do you have one?
Or is it just your opinion?
Because what one person likes the other may not
buying a performance
Big respect to Sid out here Inspiring BMW designers✊🏽
No problem!
Doesn't look that good on camera, but my God , in eye sight its a marvelous creation. props to bmw's design and engineering team👌
Seems all the things people love about the M2 aren't quite there with this one; sound, steering feel, gearbox, "tossable" factor, and obviously the looks of the previous generation. Obviously this is a great daily, very quick and confidence-inspiring with the AWD, but more horses don't necessarily mean a better driving experience.
Agree, I had a manual 235i RWD and now have a stage 2 Manual M140i and it is that rawness and the fact you can't break concentration. Makes driving feel special and like an event rather then just sitting in an automatic 4WD robot car.
@@richardbeck818 how did you find the man 235i, my Mrs had one when I had and auto m135i and the auto felt night and day quicker.
@@Neil2022 the auto is definitely quicker, but I just prefer a manual. Just adds to the whole experience. The manual m140i which has 440bhp is a different animal though!
This isnt an M2 nor is it an M2 replacement........common sense here why are people arguing that fact.
YOU ARE CORRECT. ‘JUST NOT QUITE AN M’ .. M’S ARE A WHOLE DIFF CHASSIS. MSPORTS ARE NOT M’S.
Crazy how large the lineup is now, even the standard 2 series is bigger than my old E46 3 series 😂
I wonder how the 2023 M2 being announced soon will measure up
Nice balanced views Rory, thanks…been viewing your posts for quite a way. Your views are always well qualified and you cover a lot of aspects. Thanks.
Keep up the wonderful work Rory!
The quality of these videos are stunning!
I agree ... And the voice
That front end look comment is spot on.its hard now to unsee it 🤣🤣☠️
2:18 "what you see, you can't unsee it"
Rory philosopher!🤩
Awesome reviews always love watching your channel
I love mine. Got it in Brooklyn Grey, comfort pack, tech pack got a carbon spoiler and wing tips. Love the look as well
As always, very spot on and well executed review, Mr Rheid.
Nice review man👌👌.That B58 is serious when paired with the xdrive
Great review! I like the size of it and the 2 Series seems to drive more like "old BMWs" in the feel department than the 3 Series does, although a lot more comfortable.
Makes a big difference which colour you go for with this car. Personal taste but I think it looks best with it’s distinctive and some would say controversial styling in Black Sapphire
Portimao Blue FTW in my opinion.
Nice colour. My 2021 330e is Sunset Orange Metallic. Strangers have complimented me on that choice and it startles me every time.
This was my second choice. It's also quite stunning.
Thanks for the informative video I would like to know your opinion about getting m240 or m440 if I don’t care about rear seats
Good! Thankyou! It was growing on me to. Now its sid.
love my m240i, sporty and comfy as a daily
Great review!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously one of the best channels about cars.
Liked then watched, Rory rocks 😄
SICK COLOR!! GREAT REVIEW!
Welcome back rory !! 👍
A great car in a splendid colour. We're getting our BMW 3-series re-painted since we never liked the stock grey. I pick bronze, my wife wants dark green. Maybe we'll compromise on purple?
Excellent review, covered just about everything a potential buyer could ask for.
The kidney grilles on the newer cars are getting big and silly looking now and totally taking away the somewhat "aggressive" or even traditional look of the older BMWs, but these on this particular model seem fine.
Thanks so much for this, fabulous looking car and well done mentioning summer and winter driving, I have found BMWs super all year round apart from ice weather especially on inclines where they can be a bit jaunty!
Rory is a gem in the car review world
Saw 2 of them in the showroom the other day, looks stunning in the flesh and the best bmw on sale
I haven’t been able to comment for a while now
Happy to be back
I ilke the oversize kidney grilles too. Those triangles under the headlights (foglight area) seem like an afterthought, like the rear diffuser. All in alll great car, great review... oh a night shot of the interior would have been nice!
Been waiting for it😻
CarWow test got a one off 3.8s 0-60mph time, maybe could do quicker with a few goes. And in black and probably any other colour apart from this revolting purple, it looked AWESOME
Great colour!
Can you show us the camera you use to shoot the video details with?
I wanna see the m2 comp next year. That's the car to drive right there
Which car would you recommend i am looking at buying a new m240i or a Audi S5 coupe vorsprung
Nice
Great video mate
I would have preferred the larger kidney grills. Not keen on the rear neither ( looks bland ) other than that all good ! Great review Roy 👏👏
Rory killing it as usual. Fire 🔥
How can it weight that much?? I have a G21 M340i and that weighs 1770kg.
Agree that the steering is a bit dull, as actually is the whole experience in it. It goes fast, it's comfy, but it's all a bit meh.
When I heard that I was like wtf that's ridiculously heavy for a car like that
AWD and all the modern equipment.
@@Afraz_9n3 How heavy this car is?
@@jhonnydrop7100 Nothing the G21 M340i doesn't have, and that's quite a bit bigger.
Damn BWM really got Dr. Stone to design the car and coloured in the succ emoji colour, absolutely wild.
I have an OG and it can be really quite a frisky little beast - so I love it even more! For me the very small rough edges were a benefit so I didn’t upgrade to the CS, which was a surprise frankly, and bought the car when the lease expired. Many cars are quicker than an M2 - heck an X-Drive with a big diesel can be faster - but more fun? 🤔 So I do realise that a nice auto 240 may have me as I mess up my gear change - but I might be grinning more!
OG M2 is the lightest racecar you can get from bmw
that alone makes it the best of the lineup for driving fun
@@qna95B Is it really?
@@mariomunoz7167 if you drive by a F80/F82, or a M2C on the street, you wont even realize they are there if your eyes are closed! (im talking here in North America, no opf filter)
Contrastly, the OG brings so much drama and fun to the street, it a real keeper for the enthusiast, especially if you have a tune and a M Performance exhaust
@@qna95B I have an ‘18 m2 with a 6 speed myself. That’s why I was asking. Currently fbo on e85. Thanks for appreciating the og, even though it’s not the m2c. I think it sounds way better.
I have about 10-11k in positive equity on it. Little miles on the odometer. Bmw dealer here in Houston, TX has been contacting me nonstop that they’re really interested in buying it. They offered me a 2023 m240ix with and all these extras with nothing down, less $/month ect. Like sheesh. That bad?
Actually, I considered an m340i. Mostly due to the drivetrain and 2 xtra doors. I think I may regret getting rid of my m2, though. Thoughts?
Does the 2023 line of 230i/M240i series cars now come with iDrive 8 Operating Systems, and the new large curved display? This video might already be outdated from the last two weeks of design updates.
Hey Rory, I like your car reviews very much and there is a question. Is the McLean mp4-12c a good choice?
no
@@ppppw2 why
@@crimsonelite6882
Amazing cars and anyone with petrol in their veins would love how they feel and drive.
Staggering high levels of performance and presence.
Genuine supercar for Cayman GTS ish money.
The ‘NO’ comment is probably in reference to the potential financial trauma. Without qualification, it could just as easily be ‘Yes’
They have proven to need replacement engines, clutches and gearboxes, which could equal the buy price for a decent tidy example.
The suspension and steering rack are all run on the same hydraulic system, which can and do, easily cause £30k with mayhem if it goes wrong.
Don’t even think about one with carbon ceramic brakes!
If something like a window switch breaks, you could face a £3k bill. Many custom and bespoke components!
If you can afford a warranty and the insurance, plus a couple of tyres and a service each year, then go for it I say.
But that is possibly approaching £10k in planned running costs per year though.
Some fairly large contingency will need to be taken into account for the unfortunate, or unforeseen.
You could go and buy a 718 GT4 and spend 1/10th of the running costs, with zero contingency required.
No warranty to buy and just give it to Porsche if it has an unlikely issue.
Better in a lot of ways, for similar money to buy.
One is a supercar though, while one is a good sports car.
Have you got the means to take the risk?
I know I haven’t
Thorny Motorsport / Bell & Covill and some others have specialised in servicing and maintaining the older McLaren models.
Even offer warranty programmes etc.
Funny how that's your view of a bright day outside 😂😂, great car by the way
07:00 thought I was watching Fully Charged for a second 😂
does it come with a subscription option? ^_^
@Rory which would you personally choose the BMW M240i or the Audi RS3?
I am not Rory but I will choose the BMW M240i over AUDI RS3
Purple = WIN
Nice watch 👌🏿
The razor sharp presenter, Rory has earned his stripes, what a review!
lovely colour
Rory you're by far the best automotive journalist of the moment! You deliver the message clearely and always with a simpaty and good mood touch 😊 aside with Harry Metcalfe, Jason Camisa and Matt Watson you're the best! Continue the excellent work
why does the cockpit look so different to the german model, which gets the new wide screen thingy like the i4?
M2 CS is top of the food chain for any M2 and likely always will be
Nothing funny about an evo COTY that beat McLaren 765 LT. It’s a serious performing car that will never be likely never replicated in the 2 series
Well of course but it is 100k lmao
@@F87Zach yeah that’s true. Gotta be wealthy to buy some of these legend cars
I love the idea of this car. Had the M140i and it was crying out for xDrive. Unfortunately it's just too expensive for me now ☹
Love the colour
I gave it a bitting last week with a GS450H F-SPORT performance hybrid despite my car being heavier. As guess what.......is soon will be visiting the dealship for some CHECK ENGINE
Nice Rolie Rory.
it actually looks great with drl and in motion
BMW has just updated the M2 and starting this year it will have the new iDrive 8 displays (like the 3 Series 2023 and i4)
My man, I was about to buy this car but you said it looks like sid 2:17 I don’t want it anymore 😭😭
Amazing video as always, the camera work spot on as usual, and the writing is straight to the point.
I am thinking about buying a BMW right now. Choosing between the M240i and the M440i, same engine, the only differences being the better tech in the 4 series vs the 2 series. Do you think the tech and cooling seats are worth the extra money ? :)
All M240i Xdrives being built henceforth come with iDrive 8.
@@TheMasterNinjaRyu Yeah, I know, it has the new 'Wide Screen' now. The 4 series has the better Laser Lights, Cooled seats, retractable tow hook, and some other tech. So I was curious if all that is worth the extra
@@Zisuen I would say not seeing as the 4 is worse looking imo as well as not being as good to drive 🤷🏼♂️
@@Zisuen the m440i is also heavier thus less dynamically capable (much slower than the m240i around tracks according to fastestlaps) and slower accelerating
M340i looks the best out the three
And it's the perfect colour for me!!
Really nice car, would love to own one.
Only thing i don't like is that the taillights are upside down, looks wrong. And the counter clockwise rev counter, meh. But can be costumized so that's a bit of okay.
Slap on some good tires, an exhaust (with dp) and tune on and just enjoy it everyday.
The entire iDrive system in the M240i is already outdated. As of this month all new builds will come with iDrive 8 which has a different dash display.
Respect for the YM 💪
Just ordered mine and all the new ones will get the updated idrive 8 interior. I still haven’t seen it in any of these videos though.
I really can't unsee it now😂😂😂😂😂
You ought to drive the entry level base 230i rear wheel drive coupe. For less than $40k (USD) you can buy a fun, sporty, daily driver. It’s clearly the best BMW value in the current market. It’s got the same chassis bits except much lighter up front, which give you a better with nimble handling in corners.
It's like Jurrasic Park meets Barney, love the purple
Epic cars !!
Nice yatch master
When it comes to everyday driving, the M240i is perfectly capable of both performance and daily use.
Why haven't you reviewed CLA 45 s
Car is growing on me but still love my M2C more!
Coming from an m340i I would only trade the might m2comp for an new m2.
My car is too fast with only downpipe. It can get 100-200 in only 8,7secs!
The first generation 2 series will be hailed for its styling..... back to the drawing board bmw
I love if when people make definitive statements about the car, based only on their blinkered viewpoint 🙄
This has nothing to do with an M2 at all.
There will be a new M2 along shortly, with RWD and a manual option. Using M2 in the title is just a bit of click-bait.
My opinion, from MY specific viewpoint is this…..
I like the fact that it’s a more GT like car, with occasional use back seats. A smaller lighter M440i suits me perfectly.
FWD auto are great for me too.
I think the front is way less uggo that the rest of the BMW range and the side profile looks fantastic!
I say this, as this will be the accompaniment to a manual Cayman GTS 4.0.
My M240i is scheduled for Oct22 and will create a fantastic two car garage I feel.
It’ll wear winter tyres for the cold months and be fantastic on the autobahn trips we take.
The B58 / ZF8 is a combo I’ve wanted for a good while, but I found the F series cars too flimsy and poorly engineered in the chassis dpt. With a stage 3 E82 Birds chassis 135i in my history, I didn’t want one of those F’ing things 🤓
Why would I want an M2 anyway? That’s as expensive as the Porsche, but as a PURE driving experience, can’t hold a candle to a world class bespoke sports car.
I can’t think of a better 2+2 coupe that does what this car does in the same footprint / price bracket.
Any other suggestions 👂
I love it when people make definitive statements about a car based only on their blinkered viewpoint 🤔
All relative. I can't comment as you have as I have no direct exposure to these vehicles. And I feel comments are made by people who have no exposure or hands on knowledge either. You come across as the opposite 👍
You had to ruin it with that ice age reference. I really liked the way this thing looks.
I don't like the gargantuan grille trend, so I think this car is handsome.
Which is the most reliable luxury car brand? That can rival Lexus in reliability?Btw lovely content autotrader team,i am absolutely loving it🙂.Thank you so much.
How is it possible to build this small 2 door compact coupe with a curb weight from 1800 Kg?
Because it’s essentially a 3/4 series kit with a shorter wheelbase
@@Bimmer_Bill and why has the new BMW/Supra with nearly the same size and the same chassis, engine and transm. a curb weight from 1520 Kg?
@@alengreen589 simple, it’s a shorter (7 inches) RWD two seater. 2/3/4 series are all 4 seaters and AWD adds around 150 lbs alone. The Zupra body might be a little lighter too, but the rwd and two seat configuration (far shorter wheelbase) are the main reasons why it’s almost 400 lbs lighter. BMW doesn’t add lead to its cars to make them heavier. Hahaha.
@@Bimmer_Bill Ok thank you very much for the Info.
@@alengreen589 no worries. I wish the 240i was lighter too. The M2 will be lighter and if they make a special version (CS/CSL) sign me up!
Nice
Now that Rory said it looks like SId from Ice age I can't unsee it
A cracking car I’m sure. I own the previous generation M240i and ran a G42 220d for 2 weeks when the local dealership gave my car amnesia. Really warmed up to the G42 and it’s a proper follow up to the F22. I can imagine with the B58 it would be sensational, if a bit heavy. Still, not available with a manual so not for me but a completely unique offering in the marketplace.
I'm probably biased because I have the same whip as you but I dont think I'll ever warm up to the looks of any g series bmw, none of them have that heritage anymore angel eyes, sleek styling the light frame, just a shit direction imo but I guess new looks always needs time to grow on people
Don’t understand why they didn’t had a manual to the m240i?
THAT COLOUR 😍
It might be faster than the M2 but, M2 looks much better 👍
In an ugly apples to ugly oranges comparison, one would need to compare this to a currently unreleased M2. The previous (better looking) generation m240 wasn’t as good looking as the M2, but both are better looking than this.
They say that most are pumping out in excess of 400 bhp 🤔that would definitely explain the 0 to 60mph (🇬🇧👍) times of 3.7,3.8 etc - consistently !!! I’m trying to keep hold of my brilliant Mini GP3 but lm tempted - really tempted🤔,having owned a couple of M140s and a M235 (manual) - if lm sensible it’s definitely a contender for next year rather than 2023😂😂 - 👏👏👏BMW !

It would have looked a lot better if the tail lights were stretched out horizontally. 🤷🏻♂️
You know a car is no fun when it's fast but doesn't feel like it. You're never going to feel like you're going fast even whilst breaking every speed limit by miles. Not a good recipe.
trust me, this car feels fast as hell
I have a brand new one that i've put 5k miles on so far and when you step on it you get thrown back into your seat
I’m not sure what the deal is with this specific review vehicle, but I own this car myself - and have zero problems with manually shifting gears or making the car pick the gear I want. Holding in the left (“ - “) paddle will automatically shift down; and if I am already in Sport/Manual mode, a couple of clicks on either shifter gets me instantly to the gear I want.
I’m no professional car driver nor as experienced as Rory, that’s for sure; for my work I have driven a LOT of rental/hired cars with flappy paddle shifters over the last 10-15 years…and for me this BMW is the *only* car I’ve ever driven where the paddle shifters are INSTANT in their response. Other cars, paddles are more of a suggestion. In this BMW I barely let go of pressing the paddle & the car is already in the gear I want. So I’m not sure if it’s just that press car or something else - but it’s definitely not my experience. I loved that response specifically so much that it was one of the top 3 reasons why I traded in my manual gearbox car for this one.
Nice review my friend... If that car has more power than the current M2, just imagine what stats the next gen M2 is going to have!!!... For this car 1795kg is definitely on the porky side but power to is up there too.
The E30 M3 was 215bhp with 1200kg to push along. That`s 180bhp/tonne just short and a specific engine power of 93.4bhp/litre
This thing is 374bhp with 1795kg to push along. That`s 208bhp/tonne just over.. But look at the specific engine power 124.66 bhp/litre.. WOW!!!... Engine tech has come a long way. This is a stunning example of technology over physics. Gorgeous, tech filled, wonderfully designed, lardy arsed rocket ship!!!! Now can someone give me the 50 grand I need to buy one please???
You have to work hard
M cars are very specific. And these cars are more of an everyday livability. I ordered an m2 but I also live somewhere where everyday I can open it up
Remember when cars were hand drawn, the lines the flow, it's organic, now we have some idiot with an iPad and the line tools, edges and angles everywhere.
Still trying to figure out which watch he's wearing
