I'm PhiDX, I play Tekken professionally for @ParagonFGC and ArcadeShock. - Hry
Hey I'm the Hwoarang in the video. The solutions to my issues may have been obvious to some, but Phi and some of the twitch comments (like do ff4 or ff3 to get in closer) really helped out. I have a bad habit of doing armor moves because people tend to mash at these ranks but clearly I need to break the habit. This did help me out, I know what to focus on, thank you Phi for watching my replay.
good luck on your ranked journey!
watch lotusasakuras coaching session with kwiss. it helped my hwoa ALOT.
Good luck bud!!
Rooting for you kid but if we matchup lol I’ll crush ya 😂 happy trails good luck on the ranked grind
@@Djfmi I'm 34 just fyi haha, but thanks
Lets go!! Upvote the shit out of this so that Phi opens the VOD Review/Coaching to us plebs!!😄
I'm a pleb and I approve of this message
Found the redditor!
Will do!
fo real, average player but no limit to improvements ❤
Second this!
he needs the screen where he can draw on the screen and point things on out like they do in sports and Phi will be a coach for sure
Sajam strats😂
I'm dying at the thought of him with a red laser like a college professor 😭💀💀
Hey phidx, around 8:05 I noticed you went into a few hypothetical situations. It might be worthwhile to use the take control function to show examples for each and what you’d do differently!
this is why I subbed after 2-3 vids, and most people in the FGC I go check what they're up to every 2-3 months. Quality explanations
Anakin also does videos like this that are good if you want more
Thanks for the videos PHIDX, I just got demoted from garyu after grinding weeks to get there. There were so many times I got so frustrated, salty, HOWEVER I remember your lessons, and how I shouldn’t care about my rank, because I will eventually get it back. I’m trying to be better at tempering my salt when I grind the game, and I have you to thank for that! I’m just trying to be better player, while also having fun in the losses just as much as the wins. I’ve gotten better at not blaming the game when something doesn’t go as planned and instead try to figure out what were the mistakes I made that caused things to fall apart, that way I grow and get more out the game long term as opposed to empty calorie victories and short term happiness from scrub victories.
Yes! Your rank is realistically a range of 3 ranks, so keep at it and you'll stay in Garyu longer!
Recently got into tekken from the sajam tekken slam and you’ve been my go to for trying to learn this game. Keep up the quality work man!
Good luck on your journey man
I had the fortunate experience of having a handful of games with a guy at Purple Ranks who mained the same character.
Spent a few hours the next day reviewing what happened and it was insightful.
Must admit it's difficult to read the command history, to see what move was triggered and accepted by the game
Thanks for the insight Phi, you're awesome! I just started watching your videos and I'm really learning a lot! Keep posting, can't wait to learn more.
Vod reviews are awesome! Great educational content.
Awesome, LOVE viewer replay reviews
just hit fujin today on jin! thank you for being an inspiration phi! your videos and you coaching other players helped me a lot! even your old jin guide for t7 helped me!
I always make sure I upvote your videos before I start watching them, Phi. I just know it's gonna be quality stuff
Thanks Phi! This was a great lesson and easy to understand as a beginner!
Phi making the guides I wish existed 8 years ago! Good work and godspeed my man
I always forget the replay mode gives you tips on how to punish moves and that i can see their frame data so i dont have to go into training mode and pick through all the moves to find the one that killed me. Im loving these coaching sessions man, keep it up! ^^
Dood the replay in this game is a godsend
I would LOVE to see more of these.
These types of coaching videos are very insightful.
Great content as always Phi!
This is great to get a handle on how to look at your replays! Super helpful. One thing I would appreciate is if there was also a "what to do/coach notes" section, so if you identify what killed you, how do you go about fixing it and practicing that. But I can imagine that's quite difficult, and this is super helpful regardless.
Learn your frames so you don’t mash when it’s not your turn and know you’re unsafe move (bigger than -9). Slowly learn each matchups (like when Jin was +11/+4).
Practice it by playing in frame and not mashing when you can be punished. Not sure how to explain how you practice not whiffing (move in closer? Or like Phi said, maybe don’t push anything and play neutral, you don’t have to always push).
Hope that helps. Don’t expect yourself to “fix” it immediately, these things take time.
No you're right this would have been pretty easy what this guy needs to do and he can probably figure it out he needs to get more familiar with the ranges on his attacks because he's whiffing a lot he needs to get more consistent with his combos because he dropped a lot of combos and he needs to pay attention to when his opponent is in heat because he keeps trying to use armor moves in heat and just not use that armor move so much because that's getting him punished.
Even though I'm a Reina main, I've really enjoyed this video. I was able to learn a few things from this. I really appreciate this kind of content from you @PhiDX. Thanks for the awesome and informative video!
Great video I'd love to see more stuff like this.
Thank you PhiDX again!! Been stuck Flame Ruler and losing up to 9 in a row but not sure how to use replay. This is perfect timing! Thank you!
Dude same
Bro you can dissect EVERYTHING from the fight in replay. It's sick. I recommend turning on command history for both players and turn on attack details for both players. Simply focus on the times you took damage and understand how it happened and work on not making this mistake that led you taking damage. A lot of it has to do with fundamentals .
Hell yes love this!! Thank you
I really like these I hope you do more
Great video, I'd like to see more reviews at Battle Ruler to Raijin range
I have been following you since Tekken 7. I wanted to say you are one of my inspirations to get better at this game, and make content for this game.
Definitely get your philosophy man! Going to apply this logic for myself ^^
Great video Phi! I really love how you breakdown the process by which you come to conclusions, I am buying the game in a few days here and really excited to get beat up a ton! I was wondering if you had any thoughts on beginners trying to learn Zafina? I think even if she is a bad fit I just enjoy her aesthetic and the way her moves look so much that I will soldier on even if she is harder then most character, but I have heard some people in the scene talk about her like she isn't really playable. Thanks for all your work regardless, a new fan!
Shadow20z is doing great with her!
Damn, been here since 10k subs. Phi is growing so fast since T8 came out
Yes please more videos. I learn every video
This is cool to see. Would be cool to make series with more characters too. I'm new to Tekken/fighting games and managed to hit and stay in Flame Ruler. Been there actually for 2 weeks now and i ain't dropping down nor am I climbing up for the past week despite playing only ranked. I really wanted to hit blue and take a break to watch more twitch or vids on the side to slowly get more accustomed to the chracters as a whole. But jeez I just can't make it to blue. The difference between Raijin+ and purples just feels like I'm legit missing 2-3k hours of experience. The bell curve just feels nuts or I am simply bad lol
Yeah this is my first tekken as well and I’m teaching purple now. Definitely feel like it’s getting harder atp and the gap is becoming very huge.
Hello! Thanks for introducing me to Tekken through the OTV guys. Is a sykkuno vid coming out? Been waiting for that :D
Love this content!
that's a clever way to start looking at replays. just focusing on exactly what is killing you or hurting you. i usually feel a bit overwhelmed when trying to look at replays.
Bless this content!
We have replays in this game that give you hints and a great practice menu that can help you setup a certain situation. If I lose to something I'm not familiar with then I go to practice and find out if it's a high/low and the frame data as well. Yes, it is time consuming, especially with a character roster of 32, but you will gain knowledge that will only help you.
Damn i see myself doing a lot of those mistakes at freshly orange ranks. I learned quite alot!
You have been fantastic as my Tekken philosophy guy for my drives to work. It's amazing lol
This could be a whole video series
Loveeee thissss ❤❤❤
Great great video man! How can I send you my Tekken ID and get reviewed? I'm learning my second character right now but I would love to get some advice on my main (Jin).
Honestly I watched your videos to see your outro, bring it back!
Don’t have anything to say but I’m leaving a comment for the algorithm. Keep up the great work Phi! Your videos are like the end of an IGN review. “Theres a little something for everybody”
I came from smash bros from the vid coney put out liking your work. Even beyond the fact that you're a good coach who lays out information in a simple yet very effective way, that replay system is insane, as a smash player. Sure, ultimate is 6 years old at this point, but still. If I had to tech to get into modern fgcs, I'd at least try this game out just for polish alone.
How do we sub to be able to get replay reviews? Love your content, Phi!
Ma its a new PhiDx video
I'm here son
What got me promoted from yellow ranks into orange is realization that neutral range is actually one backdash away from starting position. Once I figured that distance out, the vacuum of that distance just sucks people right into power crushes, heat smashes, and launchers. People will whiff.
Now, as a vanguard, my cheeks are being clapped by continuously evading Asukas (I'm a Paul). My defense is alright, but I whiff like mad on sidestepping opponents, so now I'm learning sidesteps.
I can imagine that once I get to red ranks, the next challenge might be clean inputs and good block punish...
8:16 mmmmmmm daym man phi bro like insane philosophy wow daymm
I would love a "Is it IMBA or do I suck" from PhiDX tekken style
Great content
I was playing on controller, and getting some moderate success mashing (with hworang) and then immediately realized I needed to switch to keyboard, just because I couldn’t actually tell what was happening in game. Learning keyboard has slowed me down and helped me really think about every move more
You should buy a hitbox one day if you end up sticking to keyboard instead of controller
@@raveturkey1996 yeah it’s good advice I think, I do think that I would feel better on a stick rather than doing discrete up down left and right inputs. Gonna see how far keyboard takes me, at least for now
While the tips and tricks guide are great, THIS is what I'm really hyped about! Telling real players in these types of ranks what they are doing wrong and how to improve!
Really hope you will do the same types of vids for the higher-intermediate ranks (like Tekken King and above)
Damn higher-intermediate is TK? 😅
@@vance4171 Well it takes more of your brain to play at that rank than Garyu imho
Good stuff 👍
Nice video. Please more coaching videos around purple rank😢
Does the Tekken prowess on alt chars of the same rank stacks with the general number or the prowess goes up when u rank higher?
Phidx, do you stream on CZcams as well or just twitch? How can i get in on vod review?
Thanks for the lesson today Phi! Appreciate it! Praise be the algorithm.
More of these. Very helpful
What's nuts is that I have no idea what Hwoarang and Jin do and this video still helped me. Keep doing these Phi. Very educational. Love all you do man. Gerald is King.
That's great content. I would love to have my gameplay dissected like this. It could help a lot.
would love to see you go into how to dissect higher ranking gameplay VODs.
Hell yeah!
Would love if you kept doing vod reviews. Gives you the ability to make content geared towards different skill levels
I definitely need to do this myself since it was such a big deal for me in Dbfz. My only problem is that I get so caught up in smaller details that I forget my main goal when watching replays
Solid vid
Was waiting for you to tackle this type of content. Would love to see some ~fujin gamplay sometime in the future. Good job as always
16:28 outro skipping is client side, you can't skip outros when viewing a replay :P
4:00 1,1,3,3 Can be used as a conditioning tool to get the opponent to duck.
You talked about how strong hwo is close but how do you learn what ranges your character is supposed to be good at? I just hit shinryu but i dont know this and would love to know where i should be spacing myself
I know you aren't trying to drag this player, but i would really try to convey that he is trying to cover for his lack of fundies by relying on the armor crush. This Jin wasn't aggro, he wasn't a candidate for 5~ armor moves, and he punished them all and then got a big reward after each. Combine that with the dropped combos, lack of whiff punishment, and not understanding of what char has the space advantage and imo he's right where he should be.
Phi: red ranks is learning to pilot your character
Me: still in orange after 100hrs ToT
The hwo player just like other hwo players they don't block because they are used to do his flowchart strings. All they want is to learn the + frame strings and that's why they lack of any defense skills. His opponent in other hands has to learn how to block or duck his + frame flowchart strings, so he has better defense and ducking skills.
15:00 regarding retaliating with an unsafe armor move , I think this is a bad habit that you would pick up fighting at low ranks. Low rank players usually would rush to attack thus baiting them then setting up with an armor move usually works. But as you go up the ranks, you would encounter more patient opponents like what the Jin did here. He did not attack right away and waited a second or two before making his move. Just remember as you go up the ranks a lot of the moves or set ups that work on the lower inexperienced players will not usually work at upper ranks
Posting for the algorithm. Thanks for the vid, this is so insightful.
11:58 What a frame perfect pause by PhiDx
amazing video, id love to see a xiaoyu video because she seems to have such a different play style than most and im struggling to get up the ranks with her
🔥
Quality content from Coach Phi. This is something that can translate across characters. This ia awesome! I love it
i'm a sorta new player to tekken. played tekken 7 since launch although my hours are noobish and my highest rank was destroyer i only played casually. this my 1st serious tekken so as a Jin player ty for the demon paw, back dash, electric tech. imma abuse that as much as people allow. 🙏
one day PhiDX is gonna be the most famous tekken content creator
Yes, if you can play your character even if you don't understand the enemies but know your fast frame punishes like when they do a string throw out your fastest punish after to start to gain knowledge you should quite easily get to purple ranks just by being "good" at your character.
And block alot, even if you can't react to grabs that well (I can't and I'm still consistently purple ranks learning grabs and other characters is how I get to the higher ranks) you should be fine, patience and being calm and learn your character.
Would you do one for blue ranks (Fujin upward). I’ve gotten here with multiple characters then it feels like I’ve hit a wall
Thank GOODNESS they made a replay system.
@phiDX how could i send a video to you i would love to have you review them.
Love this topic and style Phi. More of this please, I think Red Ranks especially would get a lot from this (speaking as one myself).
I noticed I started getting stuck at red & purple ranks... I'm a Yoshimitsu main and higher purple and blue ranks started shutting down my nonsense with simple fundamentals. And so I started incorporating a lot more basic pokes and carefully play and now I'm at Raijin and climbing
(Used to be stuck at warrior in T7 so I'd like to assume I'm just improving)
Hey Phidx I recently got a victrix pro fs, i used to be a hitbox player, but I wanted to change things up, do you have any tips on how to get started with stick, I was a tekken god jin but starting new with stick i feel completely like a noob again, with the new comers to tekken 8, would it be possible for you to make a video on how to start of with a stick?
🔥🔥🔥
would love to see more!
what's the requirements / process to submit a demo for review?
🐐
NGL the buff to armor moves and incredibly powerful heat burst to create mixup situation does make players rely on them extensively. To the point they would rather bet on the armor over blocking launch punishable moves. Fundamental will always win you games
NIce vid
I would like to see you try out Lee Chaolan so far I haven't seen many vids on him he is main to great content by the way keep it up 👍👍
I've run into Duck somewhere in blue rank, Raijin I think.
Did i miss the line take Mr. Phi?!
i would love to see a video of my self like this (also hwoarang main) i never know how to put pressure on ppl and they always get me def block for hours
Good vid as per usual Phi. My hope is that people dont get too overwhelmed by gaining and losing ranks and strive to improve their gameplay. You've fostered a great community where many people are constantly trying to improve.
get well soon phi ! remember, the
training and fights are important, but the most important thing is the rest!
