I am surprised that Kevin didn’t object to the first guitar being out of tune. Anyone who knows their way around a guitar knows that it was not a fair comparison. Those guys pulled a fast one.
It could 've also been intonation. Some guitars are tuned but dpending on where your playing on the fret board its out of tune but I lean more towards slightly out of tune as well. The thing is Leary sounds decent enough to have said, hold on let me tune this properly but overall the second guitar immediately sounded better/thicker.

The first acoustic guitar sounds like it was strung with electric guitar strings.
Very thin, tinty compared to the full thicker sound of the lower priced one

I personally wouldn't. I've played $100 Chinese guitars that were better than way more expensive guitars. Of course Martins tend to be stellar, but there is no guarantee. I will have to play before buying.
@@micclay I took a huge leap of faith and purchased an expensive acoustic ($4k+) online. I wouldn't do it with just anyone though. I dealt with a well-known reputable dealer / musician with impeccable credentials + I knew the product. Fortunately, my faith was not misplaced and I love the product.
I wouldn't buy with these guys until I could actually play the thing. They're unknown and O'Leary is just not the type of endorsement they need. They need a bricks & mortar outlet IMO.
P.S. The brand name guitar was out of tune on purpose just to make it sound like shit.

I recently was looking to buy a new guitar and did tons of research online and I went to a store to play the one I wanted only to be extremely disappointed with it once I got my hands on it. I ended up playing another one at the store that was $600 cheaper and liked that one much better. Moral of the story is buying a guitar without playing it isn’t a great idea
@@ST5S5 generally speaking I agree with ya, and ive had the exact experience you described too.. Luckily tho ive bought most guitars online and everything usually workee out well in just knowing the exact specs of what I was buying at the time (i:e: slim neck / scale length / pickups etc)

Put both guitars through a professional Luthier set-up, actually tune the competitors guitar, then try this blindfolded competition again.
I was thinking that the second guitar had a proper setup, making it preferable to the first by feel of playing. Set them both up to identical specs, same string gauge and brand, and run them again. I have some very affordable acoustics ($350) that I have set up myself that compare very favorably, for playing feel and ease, to most factory setup instruments that cost many times more.

Yes and no. The comparison of the two guitars was kind of a pointless exercise for the benefit of the non-players. An experienced player can pick up an instrument and know pretty quickly if it's good or not: how it feels, how it sounds, how easy it is to play, and to some degree how the finish looks. You don't need to compare it to a better or worse one to tell those things. Yes, mediocre guitar guitars will have trouble staying in tune, but truly bad guitars _can't_ be put in tune, not really.
Based on the quick flash of the headstock at 2:02, I can't tell what the other guitar is - I don't recognize that script.
It is difficult to tell by the quick onscreen flashes of the headstock logo, but I believe the guitar to be a Bourgeois guitar by Dana Bourgeois out of Maine.@@cisium1184
The first guitar was still brighter overall, you can tell it wouldnt have the warmth of the second tuned perfectly anyways

I'd be curious to hear how these guitars have worked out for those who bought them. The 5K guitar has a suspiciously bad sound, IMO, so who knows what was done with it regarding things like strings and setup. It's not actually that difficult to make a very good guitar sound mediocre with improper setup. It also seemed to be a little out of tune compared to the perfectly tuned M&M guitar. Bottom line is that the M&M is a Chinese factory made instrument, so it would be interesting to hear from people who have owned one for a while to know how they've worked out.
Personally, I'd go for a nice Canadian hand-made Godin for around the same price. I know with certainty how well they're made and the consistently excellent sound they produce.
I'm with you there. You can mess with a Martin or Taylor neck, strings, tuning etc to make is sound very bad, I am surprised nobody would have wanted to ensure both guitars were set up equally.
@@glennlegge9285 I agree. The $5000 guitar ???? sounded like crap, and was no doubt improperly set up in some way. The comparison was tainted as a result. Having said that, I very recently took delivery of an M&M Tofino X. I took somewhat of a chance with the on-line purchase, however I did research the guitar as well as I could, reading all the many reviews placed by previous purchasers. I've been playing it a lot over the past week, and find it to be very playable, well made, and it sounds excellent. So far I have absolutely no complaints.

the 5k guitar was (intentionally I'd imagine) out of tune and had stale strings. The pitchman's guitar was tune with a fresh set that hadn't even been cut yet.

This is the same concept as Orangewood Guitars. They make quality instruments .
The first guitar had brittle strings and was purposefully not quite in tune, however the MM guitar did sound great!
It sounded fine. And it was $999. I have a Martin that cost a bit less than that and it also sounds fine. Why would I buy a guitar online that doesn't offer a CLEAR value difference. They surely have a strategy for which this appearance is only a "break through" tactic, possibly giving them wall space in at least a decent number of guitar stores.

It took my several months of playing to decide which guitar I wanted to buy. You're either Martin or Taylor. Now I like both.
... and these are neither. Were you able to identify the guitar they used? It wasn't Martin, Taylor, or Gibson - that's for sure. I'm struggling to think of a high quality guitar manufacturer that has a logo that looks like the blurry thing on the headstock in this video.

lSeveral years ago, An M&M rep brought a number of guitars out to Ian Tyson`s ranch to get Ian`s "approval"/endorsement. He didn`t like any of them & stayed with his Olson. A few were left at a local music store & I happened to play one a few days later. It sounded good enough for a travel guitar but I didn`t buy it as the store owner wanted too much money for what was an off-shore guitar . A year later I happened to see the guitar in question in the corner of the back room so asked if it was the same guitar. The owner who was a good friend said "Yeh, it`s firewood now! The neck twisted so badly that it was unplayable & the top & sides had several large cracks.". Sure glad I didn`t buy it!! Of course, your mileage may vary. Hopefully. QC/QA has improved over the years. As someone else has noted, Simon & Patrick, Godin, Art of Lutherie made in Quebec are way better guitars IMO.

It’s quite obvious to musicians that Kevin already knew the assignment here. Any guitarist would’ve either tuned it up or handed it right back to them. Notice he’s heavy on that D chord with first guitar then switches to the fuller E chord on the 2nd guitar. That’s not an accident. lol they are doing everything possible to make guitar 1 sound thin, and guitar 2 sound more deep and resonant. They did a good job. 😂
Yep. Clever in-person 'marketing' on their part. Whenever I A/B any stringed instruments, I carefully do at least a quick visual and tactile check of the set-up , attempt to get a feel for the age and condition of the strings, then tune to the best that I can get out of the instrument as set-up and strung. To A/B properly, I always play the exact same riffs/songs on both instruments to get a fair comparison. Then, if I am serious about a pair of instruments, I ask for new strings to be installed to see if that changes things, which it often does. Any seller worth dealing with will sacrifice the time and cost of 2 sets of strings to make a sale, on at least a mid-priced instrument. I have made a few online purchases of new (and used) instruments after diligent research, and have been lucky so far, but getting your hands, ears, and eyes on the guitar is always the best way to go if possible. As a stringed instrument tech I have the ability to make adjustments/improvements to new and especially used instruments to get them to reach their highest potential, so that has given me an advantage when purchasing remotely.

The tone of the first guitar sounds like light gauge strings, the second guitar sounds like medium gauge strings has bass sound ,compared to the first one, it has a high pitch sound.

Talent is so desirable because it can help in doing great things and being successful with ease but some don't get this invaluable asset yet because they are taking it for granted.
Talent is a big old construct. It's the word folks use when they can't articulate specifics about skillful attributes. For example, a person with developed eye-hand coordination will be said by some to have _talent_ for drawing. It's a word used by the unskilled to speak as if they knew something. It's a word folks use to say something without saying anything of substance.

$900 10 yrs ago for a Chinese made acoustic guitar is insanely high. My Mexican solid body Martin was only 800. Buy a Cad built Godin/seagull instead.
I played a $200 Yamaha at L&M and it was amazing. Comparing it to my 2 Martin’s that were 4K+ each, it was shocking. Crazy value.

I will buy a M and M because it is in my price range and solid woods. I think that the blindfold test was unfair and needed an independent to set up both guitars. I think that the 5 k guitar had either cheap strings or was not tuned properly or both.

Zager guitars sells guitars straight from the factory.. So it can be done .. What they do is mail it to you. If you do not like it , send it back within a certai time frame.. But if you have a good product , it wont be sent back .
There are some great guitar factories/luthiers in China.. Eastman has stormed the market. Their quality control rivals Martin's.. Mexico's quality is good too . But then again there is a whopping amount of excellent luthiers in Mexico and access to some great native woods .
I have never heard an expensive guitar say over 2K sound that tinny, there was no low end.

Was there an issue with tuning? I heard an out of tune guitar. Any guitar player I mean realistically would pick a chord and listen for tuning before playing to make a judgement right?
Yes, the Bourgeois guitar was well out of tune and I suspect the strings may have been old, as well as too light for the guitar to allow it to sound thin and less resonant during the comparison. The set-up on the Bourgeois may well have been less than optimal also to make it less satisfying to play and less resonant. The first thing I do is tuning to the best I can achieve as the guitar is strung and set up. Then I check intonation and tuning stability if the strings look at least 'new-ish'. Old, dirty strings can play havoc with both intonation and tuning stability as well as sounding dull and lifeless.
As a guitarist, its so blatantly obvious that one of these guitars had a recent setup and the other hasn't. I can't say that manufacturing quality has nothing to do with it, but this is at best dishonest, at worst defamatory to the other manufacturer. The timbre of both instruments were nice and have a place in a studio session, but when real guitarists shop for guitars, we tune up first, ignore a semi-shoddy setup because we can fix that ourselves, and choose what suits our needs at the time. Slimy advertising fits right in to the market space I suppose...😒

Also their same exact guitar is sold by many “ boutique” sellers, an i do mean the exact same guitars from the exact same factory, Andrew whites production line is one of them, this same guitar with his name on it goes for around $499 not $5000 😂

I wouldn't pay $900 for that site unseen without playing it. I was leary paying $399 for my Gretsch Rancher site unseen but it turned out great when I got it.

Step one, detune the first guitar, step 2 raise the bridge and screw up the intonation, step 3 set up the cheap guitar perfectly, lower the bridge, get the truss-rod titson and tune it to doomsday with fresh strings, maybe even lighter gauge... Taylor did the same thing years ago and it worked for them so... Go for it.
I guess none of those folks ever heard of Sweetwater. CZcams influencers more than glad to do most of the sales work for them.
Sweetwater is amazing and you can return anything within 30 days. Most of us players won't buy something we can't play first

I learn a lot about how to build a case from shark tank/dragons den. They’re not whining for money. Instead, they list their pros, include facts. Show their solution, and hear out the sharks/dragons

If you actually played guitar, you’d know how flawed that test is. I could bring you a badly set up million dollar guitar, and a well set up shitty no name guitar and the well set up would easily outperform.

Tuned or not, the tone quality of the second guitar was in a league of the best handmade guitars out there (in the range of $7,000 to $20,000) and the first not equal by any means to what you would expect to pay more than $500 for, not $5,000. While tone is one of the best indicators of a guitar's quality, there are many other factors.
