From Mourinho’s “Spy” to the Premier League: André Villas-Boas’ Strange Climb Through Football
In this André Villas-Boas bio, we’ll take a look at how he got a job with Porto under legendary manager Sir Bobby Robson when he was just 16, how he was an assistant scout or spy for Mourinho during some of his most successful years, and his incredible opening season with Porto. How did Villas-Boas end up Chelsea manager at just 34 years old?

Definitely a rushed move to Chelsea but still an inspiration for all those who aspire to become managers
Ah, yes, AVB. I remember him well in Zenit. When he came there at the second half of 13/14 season he went on a six win streak with Zenit but as luck ran out and he started dropping points CSKA managed to steal the title. His stay in Russia from 2014 to 2016 was marked with fierce rivalry between Zenit and CSKA. He did manage to win the league in 14/15 season and during his last year with Zenit he won Russian Cup, but in the league Army club prevailed yet again.
But downplaying RPL to the level of Chinese Super league is quite unfair, to be honest.
VonKrauzer Winning with Zenit in the RPL is not much of an accomplishment, considering Zenit has a much higher budget than anyone else. And it’s been like that for throughout 2010’s. Zenit fan.
andre is a great coach, wish he was at monaco instead of marseille
Those names sounds like they were created in FIFA Career mode ☹️
Ikenna Enwelum ikr😂
Best quote on this video:
"His playing career was shorter than his name"
Could you do a video about what managers learn when they take each level of their coaching badges please?
I'm extremely happy to see him back at a top league in a club with meaningful trophy aspirations. Considering his mentors and feats at such a young age, I won't be surprised if he does reach his full potential at the top level
YOH!! I'm a Ramaldense Fc player (U-19). I have played here from the U-13 until now (7 years) and I didn't know that Vilas-Boas had played here. I love Ramaldense, but now my love is even bigger❤! Thank you Adrian💪🏻
You say “Jose” with a thick azorean accent. As someone who is the grandson of an azorean, that goes every year to São Miguel, I laughed once I noticed it
Good ear! My parents are from São Miguel.
Josá :'D
@@ddmte exaaaaaacto
Big up santa Maria Azores too
6:45 good pronunciation of José
Hahaha
is that the correct pronunciation? I thought it should be "Ho-se"
"Ho-Se" it's right in spanish, but in Portuguese we pronounce J as in "Jack"
Cool story man. I’m a Porto native and I’m sort of from the same social circle as the villas-boas family, during my student years I’ve encountered several of them in my school or my sports teams. Good to see you talk about colégio Rosário because a lot of my cousins and friends studied there
Great analysis of AVB's very intriguing career. Thanks for the vid. All Subscribed.
Amazing man keep it up the video was very entertaining thanks
Thanks Ib!
Rabona TV you are the best thanks
Man I was waiting for your video.
good stuff, man! Thanks.
He's doing amazing at Marseille
Hey @Rabona TV great work on this piece
Great video as usual Adrian. As soon as Im done watching one of your videos I just want the next one..
Thanks Emma!
He had so much potential but he is on his way back with OM
Really sad that he left porto so soon. Porto nebver became lucky with the new coaches after he left. Would be great if he came back for a few saisons.
Your channel is one of the best
Enjoyed the names immensely.
This channel deserves more subs.✌💚
Dude I'm still waiting for the alfredo di Stefano move to Madrid
Errrr..... that has been addressed. You should check his videos.
@@DarkshadeMusic what video? I didn't see it
Quality content, keep it up👍
Concordo 100%!
Ficaram-me na memória).
you fixed the sound, good job m8
😌
Hey, Happy Birthday kid!!!😘
Thanks ma!
*wait a minute*
@@RabonaTV Bro, is this *really your mom*
@@nuhashahmed7692 I think so. Filomena is a girls name and Adrian's second name is Sousa
4:23 Wolverhampton makes it on Rabona TV.. such a proud day 😭😃
That Porto team was deadly. Some world class talent.
Agreed. Was hard to watch.😑

Brendan Rodgers, Andre Villas Boas have matured with age in terms of management. They were once placed in same category as David Moyes and other banter managers but they've turned it around since then. Rodgers has turned Leicester into top 3 team and Villas Boas has done the same in Ligue 1. At the age of 34 he wasn't mature enough so he couldn't do well in Premier League back then.
David Moyes is a banter? After he make West Ham semi finalist europa league this Season he still a banter to u? U dumb?
Bobby Robson's autobiography is among the best I ever read. He was a great manager and an even better human being. I can't recommend the book enough. His story is so rich, perhaps Adrian will do a video on it one day.
The fact that you're actually knowledgeable about Ligue 1 is so refreshing.
AVB and Jose will be a great punditry team
They don't have a great relationship anymore. would make for some fun punditry.
@@RabonaTV damn wonder what happened
Another great video, will be interesting to see how AVB spy gets on. On a side note have you ever thought of doing a video on a Spain and Portugal combined league? Is that something that ever comes up like it does in England with Celtic and Rangers?
His first 6 months with Marseille are perfect , he managed to revive a dead team with almost no new players this summer. He's done the best he could with a very limited roster in quality and quantity and manage to give playing time to the youngsters from the academy. To me he's the best ligue 1 coach atm.
❤ fans of avb from indonesia.
Hello spy-scout
Happy Birthday chief!
Great video, might write a report on this channel 😄
Jossaaaah!
Can you make one on Julian nagelsmann as well
That's actually one of the first manager profiles that I made!
@@RabonaTV oh damn didn't know, thanks
What way did you pronounce Jose? That threw me haha great video as usual lad
pretty good pronuntiation for a non pt speaker
How my Azorean parents say it.
Doing great at Marseille. Can see him eventually moving to an even better club.
Who's here after he resigned in a press conference ?
I'm here after he was speculated on my team
Man! You do such great videos all the time! Keep it up bro! Can you do a video about Bielsa? Like a history of etc etc and how on earth he ended up at Leeds!?
He was called the special two,in those days!!
You didnt mention about his time as a dirt racing driver 😮
He had Vitor Pereira and Nuno Espirito Santo as his assistants, and a wonderful squad.
The next president of FC Porto 💪💙🤍🐉
#AVB2024
Excellent summary. However, it is not zhosahh! it is zhoz-A (A as in the first letter of the english alphabet)
Oh. So that's how you say his name......
i could've won the league in portugal managing that team
Still has a long career ahead and plenty of time for more success
Very true!
"Josa" 🤣🤣
You forgot the part when he was unemployed for a year, he took part in the Dakar rally.
Nedelkov 23 did he? That’s impressive
People are talking like as if he's too old now, he still has a lot of time left in his career. Its almost like if Ansu Fati played for a small club and moved to Barca and became a flop, he would stil have had alot of time left since he's only 16 or 17. I love AVB, he's a great coach who is still a fantastic prospect at management.
Josaaaaa 6:45
Get the trim my man
you had just woken up, didn't you?
Music?
hello!!!
If this was Naruto José would have been the Hokage and AVB would be a ANBU black Ops.
I think he has aged earlier than it should.
Mourinho haven't been the same after ave left his side
He managed to lose the Chelsea dressing room in half a season. Even Mou waits for the third season to do that wtf
Nobody last long in Chelsea. This guy is young, so the JT and his gangs felt little pressure in walking over him. For the other portugese, he was the first to make them champions.
You’re saying like Chelsea don’t sack managers every season since abramovic arrived.
It's jose not josaaa
Who was a fan of Rabona tv fan before this decade?
Adrian, what about the Chelsea and man city video
I'm working on a Chelsea video for tomorrow actually.
Rabona TV thank you Adrian 🙏🏾
No problem Sam, thanks for the support.
Rabona TV Yh bro. I love your videos
Ahhh, Mr “Downward Spiral”... I heard he had some kind of participation in last year’s Dakar Rally
and he had a major accident as well
I personally don't appreciatte Villas Novas that much. That's what I call him.
But, his work in Académica was pretty good. The club was already facing bankrupcy and this was a final attempt to save the club. The city of Coimbra gathered money the way they could to pay the man his salary and the team got their best talents borrowed from Sporting but they were hardly consistent. Overaged brazilian players and a goalkeeper that saved the day every now and then.
The Porto squad was dominant in Portugal. Rolando was a magnificent center back in this season and Moutinho worked like a clock on that midfield. Freddy Guarín had some technical potential but he was gladly sold and no one missed him that much. He was compared to Carlos Alberto in Porto.
Hulk was the most powerful striker Porto ever had in it's entire history. Falcão was also deadly. But Sappunaru was very bad and Otamendi never conquered much love either. They were clearly the weakest links. Fernando was a team player and made great games. Over all he still gets some credit, his knowledge of the league was superb and he his a respectful person to work with. Tactically he set himself apart from Mourinho too but then again the need to mention Hulk and Falcão. Mou had Derlei, Maciel and McCarthy.
So we skipped over the fact that he became a rally car driver. Cool
lol the attitude in this comment!😄
This video is about his football career and looking back at it. His family loves racing, but it doesn't have anything to do with why he climbed the football latter at such a young age. But, it seems you already know about his races in Dakar, etc. so you don't need to worry about the fact that it wasn't included for obvious reasons.🙂
Rabona TV haha FairPlay. I’m a massive Tottenham who actually liked him (we exist) he’s such an interesting guy. But I guess this can count as part 1 haha. Great video always mate. Keep it up.
Joe-ZAH
I remembered he angered lots of Zenit fans by freezing out club legends Kerzhakov and Arshavin.
Who’s here after he became president of fc porto?
So never go to Chelsea as a young player or manager???
Noted.
Behind best of the rest behind psg😁
Top 6 league*
5-0
typical Benfica fan.
How about some English talent like Steven Gerrard
Absolutely hated him when he was at Chelsea!!
I hate how he says the name jose
It's with azorean accent
We need a new update on this video now tha Andre just got elected F. C. Porto new president, please Sir.
Ridiculous to take away from his merit by saying the squad was so good. Reminder that the team lost the league the previous year - yes signings played a big role, but the core were there.
First
I dont mean to be picky, I understand youre a fellow luso-canadiano, but if youre going to mispronounce things, you may as well say it like a canadian/american would
Every time you say boas i cringe..thanks for the video though..great work..
Villas became a cyclist
I was wondering why he didn't "make it" after watching this is clear why. Everything was handed to him, rich parents, private Schools. Footbal managers need not only ambition but a survival instictin that you only get with battling adversity in your life.
AVB is a fraud... thank god spuds didn’t see that when hiring him after his flop at Chelsea 😂
only fraud is you
I saw that Feminism for bros video
A classic. I deserved an Academy Award for that casting.
ahahah I love to see benfiquistas dying inside when they have to talk about FCPorto's titles...SLB forever the little dog in the house
You have good content, Adrian, but your speaking style is extremely boring. I have to listen to your videos twice to get all the information from them. The Oh My Goal! presenter is the opposite. His speaking style makes you listen and remember every word. Sometimes I open your video on my computer to listen to if I want to listen to something that will relax me and put me to sleep, like white noise.
I can listen to the full length of your videos, but I won't be able to remember much of what I heard. As I say, the content is fine. It's your way of speaking.
I's a matter of opinion. I, for one, don't want to listen to a bargain-rate USian voiceover actor who sounds like he's trying to sell me car insurance or a household cleaning product. That's what HSN is for. Yes, they've got more subs - but so does Justin Bieber. Adrian is doing in-depth, knowledgeable content without click-bait and sensationalism, and he is being authentic to himself, speaking in his own voice, which his subs find perfectly serviceable.
