Today I wanted to spend some time talking about the MMO genre in gaming. League of Legends announced it's MMORPG about a year ago and I couldn't be more excited, being someone who's always loved the genre of game myself. So to close out the year I thought it would be fun to take some time looking at the past, present, and future of MMORPGs.

just a heads up gbay - i know you have to take sponsor deals in order to pay the bills. But from someone who had Surfshark for over a year, cancelling their subscription was a nightmare. You can't simply cancel the service. You need to send them an email, confirm you want to cancel, and only afterwards it's cancelled. Otherwise, it'll continue to have an automatic renewal. Honestly, that's a bit of predatory behaviour in my point of view, and since I think you're a great creator and only want what it's the very best for your fans, thought I'd let you know.

Runescape was a more approachable interpretation of Ultima Online (the idea of a browser mmo was brilliant). It thrived, in part, because it retained the original vision of Ultima Online as UO lost its way.
      *Rant begins here*
Ultima Online was initially designed around economics and the concept that everything in the game was created by players. Originally you either participated in the economy by harvesting resources, refining them, or buying from other players. A perfect example of an early problem that was handled poorly is the PKer/bounty/sanctuary city system that could have been improved, but instead they created a mirror world where PK was impossible. It took them a while to implement guild wars in Trammel, so players who wanted to do any PvP had to travel to Felucca which became filled with nothing but PvPers. After Origin implemented guild wars in Trammel, Felucca became a ghost town with nothing but PKers. Players literally just abandoned their homes and moved to Trammel. A very inelegant solution to the PvP issues that eliminated the danger of harvesting so crafters just went out to harvest resources for themselves and players didn't die nearly as often so it was rare one actually needed to replace, for example, their weapon and armor. It broke down the economy. Then Origin implemented magic items that couldn't be crafted and the economy completely disappeared.
Ultima Online finally drove away many of us long-time players after World of Warcraft was released and they felt the need to directly compete while not understanding the appeal of WoW, so all they really managed to do was alienate the player base that had stuck around through other less major changes.
It literally became a choice of moving to Runescape for the old UO feels or moving to WoW because the changes to UO didn't mesh well with the core game. The primary examples being: the aforementioned uncraftable magic items, the swap from 2D to 3D graphics which made the game uglier while reducing readability of what was on screen, and "raid" style battles that just really didn't work with the core mechanisms of UO.
      *End Rant*
Here's hoping the Riot MMO doesn't just try to be "WoW, but in Runeterra"

removing the RPG element from the MMO was when everything went wrong personally . As soon as people started prioritizing competitiveness over everything else, that was when everything started to go down hill. at least that was how my experience was anyway. I think making the games so easy didnt help either, hardships is often what makes people band together which builds relationships between people.

RuneScape did worldbuilding well in the aspect you talked about. I love the fact that the RS world is non-linear. Unlike other games where after you finish the quests, there's no reason to come back which leaves the world feeling desolate, RuneScapes worlds nonlinearity means you may find high level players training farming or doing clue scrolls in places all over the world. The world feels realistic and never truely empty in that sense.
Another thing I personally love about runescape is its many skills and viabilities. Most games are just about leveling your character to get stronger, but RuneScape has so many skills to level which offer so many things to do. And unlike most other MMOs where lifeskills feel like a last minute add on, RS lifeskills like fishing, cooking, mining, smithing, and many more, are actually viable ways to grow your account/ make money. The only other game I've played that does something similar is mabinogi.
I'm hoping whatever MMO riot makes, it won't fall into the theme park category, and that they understand MMOs are about immersing into a world of lore rather than just leveling characters.

Super awesome video, I love Runescape myself and although I realized the ancient spellbook's teleports were to cities of old, I never really contextualized what that meant in context of the world. It is so fascinating to me that some of those teleports are useless by design because they aren't meant for you, they are meant for the Mahjarrat, relics of a bygone era that people one day used. Like how the "Ancient spellbook" for the player was once the "Normal spellbook" for those people. Makes me want to read up more on RS lore.
On a side note, it makes me think of an important element of worldbuilding that I think a lot of games miss out on, in that the player is a central focus of the story rather than just being a part of that world. One thing that I love so much about Runescape is how the npc's treat you in game- they just treat you as a person, half the npc's don't take you seriously! I think that is so important to make the people feel real. A good MMO (or game world in general) makes you feel like you are part of an era that is advancing, history is concurrently being made around the player rather than you simply reacting to the history of that world that has already happened.

I think the reason people get along more in MMOs as opposed to social media is because common goal brings people together, and unlike MOBAs there's not as much individual scrutiny when obstacles stand between you and that goal.

    • @SiMeGamer
      @SiMeGamer Před 2 lety

That's a great point. On social media you invent a goal, which is sadly usually political in nature since there are no mechanics and naturally some people oppose it, which leads to a cult like behavior rather than mutual benefit unification of sorts. Also, in MMOs people usually went through similar journeys, so you could relate a lot more to your fellow players while on social media it's us, and our world experiences are way too different to be able to have most people relate. You hit the nail on the head, man. Great comment :]

I think replayability and challenging content is a major key to success for modern MMO's. Even if a world is believable and you have a community within the game, if there is nothing to do, and nothing that gives you the feeling of progress or overcoming a challenge, the game will slowly start to decline. I think you nailed the aspects of world building and community of MMO's, and I 100% agree, but I think replayability and challenging content is important for the longevity of an MMO as well.

I've been player League since release and MMORPGs for much longer, I remember playing some of these MMOs and wondering if that was possible then, how good will MMOs be in 10/20 years, sadly actually nothing has changed much... MMORPGs have been stagnant for so long, the biggest change there is in MMOs is graphic quality and performance.
I know Riot isnt known for being innovators, more so just picking up something that already works and making it more appealing and accessible, but I really hope they go a bit beyond that with the MMORPG.
The main 2 problems I see in MMORPGs is bland worlds and lack of "side activities", luckily Riot has been building the Runeterra world for almost a decade now, the world is already believable even tho we have mostly seen in text form, or drawings, or some animation bits, Riot "just" needs to give it a "physical" body.
Most MMORPGs are only about you going around doing what NPCs tell you to do, kill monsters and cut trees and other life-skills, theres nothing else, ence the lack of side activities, I think FFXIV does a really good job providing alternative content, such as roleplay tools and places, different ways to play the game other than kill things and craft more things.
Theres so much potential in the world of runeterra, imagine going to the undercity, entering The Last Drop and interacting with other people there, maybe even play some of the games we seen in Arcane with other players.
I could go on and on with ideas of the game could be like, theres room for so much, but in the end I think I will be happy to just finally walk around the world I have known of for so long.

I think a modern MMO needs two things: an environment that is fun and rewarding to explore and modern gameplay. The hit 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 combat system is dated and kind of boring. I hope they find a way to add a good amount of abilities while being able to maybe lean more to darksouls or blade and soul combat. We need skill shots or directional attack instead of everything being auto lock and only like 2 combos.

I just want that this MMo doesn't revolve around me. Many MMO's have the same kind of storyline, you are the "chosen" one destined to save the world and your main quest is always the same for every player.
I want an MMO to have a life of it's own, that changes and evolves independently from what I do. But I also want the players to have influence on the world itself.
The same way the real world geopolitics are always changing, it would be interesting to have a world with a similar dynamic where players influence how the regions evolve and change over time.
With random events like natural disasters popping up unannounced out of nowhere from time to time. Things that would give life to the world and keep it interesting.

We need a virtual dnd mmo that runs like an in home ttrpg game imo. That would be my pinnacle mmo.

Guild Wars 1 is somewhat like that. Modern MMOs will always borrow from WoW though.

Honestly the idea of a world I'd want to live in is a good reason I love FFXIV. With the ability to do anything on one character and a story-driven rpg experience, I feel a deep connection to my character and the world and people I've helped so many times. I know Ghostcrawler is from WoW, but I hope they take a page from FFXIV's playbook rather than WoW's for Riot's MMO.

I've dreamed about a Runeterra MMO since 2018, tried to build the world myself, made some artwork, put this game at the center of my class projects. I've played this game in my head already, imagined the universe, the map, the gameplay, the interactions and the content. I'm eagerly waiting for this game, I know Riot Games and Greg Street have the power to make MMOs popular again. The League universe is surprisingly deep in it's lore. There's hope.

Star Wars Galaxies was that game for me. Being a double agent/espionage, having friends and "marks" that thought I was their friend as I betrayed them to the rebellion. The player economy and the unique spawn drops where everyone didn't have the same stupid items and gear. The crafting professions and the way unique versions of different resources would spawn and you had to be smart enough to stock up on the rare good ones. Will never be beaten unfortunately. Sure it could be unfair but it was like life.

Immediately heard your voice as I was checking my email and thought, "huh, this sounds like Gbay." Well, what do you know? It's been a while man. How ya been?

Think Gbay boy needs to try VRC, even desktop mode in this vr game is worth reaching people and being in worlds with others. I would guess it's alike second life. Anyway, I meet people in vrc, and then play different games with them like Destiny 2 being the only MMO alike game right now. But league MMO would take our daily life in the "virtual word" more amazing. Previously played DrakenSang Online and BnS constantly. Tried the most common MMOs, to find what I like. Just gonna pray for the best
