On this channel, I invite you to join me in exploring the intricate tapestry of my life. As a Russian-New Zealand adoptee, I open up about my experiences, shedding light on topics that resonate with fellow adoptees. From vlogs to illuminating stories, this space is dedicated to sharing not only my own journey but also the inspiring narratives of others who've walked a similar path.
Having been adopted at the age of two from an orphanage in Arkhangelsk, Russia, into the embrace of my New Zealand family, I delve into the path of my cultural upbringing, the history that has shaped me, and the meaningful connections I've made with my birth family. My quest to uncover the missing links of my heritage takes me to Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, each step a chapter in my evolving story.

Alex I want you to know how much I respect you for all that you do. Your heart is amazing and I enjoy travelling with with. My inner investigator lol. This is your story but I am sure your mom also wants to know her mom is ok. That empty hole of the unknown must be hard. Looking forward to your next update.

As always, thank you for sharing. Life can be an incredible roller coaster ride of emotions, often good but often stressful and difficult too. Please take good care of yourself along the way.

I recently was able to get my original birth certificate due to a law change in my state in the United States. I now wish I never did. My experience was very bad. My birth mother doesn’t know who I am, but I know who she is, and none of what I found out was good.
I was so hopeful I would have a good experience. My mistake was watching shows like Long Lost Family or videos on CZcams of people meeting their birth parents. My brain was screaming at me that shows like Long Lost Family are cherry picked reunions. My experience would more than likely not be like that. I sadly didn’t listen to my brain and hoped for the best.
I was completely lied to about my adoption by my adoption agency, which is probably why I had hopes about having a good reunion. At least I know now and can be comfortable about not wanting to meet my family.

Hello! I know that you have been following my CZcams videos for quite sometime and I respect you so much for doing so. I know with shows and videos that we may see online can show only a glimmer side of adoption. I know that I share my videos here understanding to people that yes it's difficult sometimes and not every story is a positive one. To this day, I struggle with the contact with my birth mother. I talk about that here and I am open about it. You can see how nervous the meeting with her was and to this day, it has always been difficult with her. Even though I see her when I can yes - I put myself in her shoes very often and so I try to understand her as much as I can. For your story, I am sorry about your experience. A lot of us in the community are always here for each other. I have helped many who have wanted to find family but have found out difficult news or information that they don't want to hear. But the support they have on their side helps and I always let any adoptee know who may want to search - to be prepared for anything. There are many reasons why birth family give their child up for adoption. There is a difficult side on their life that can later on be reflected later on. I hope for you, simply the best with what you do next. But know that people like myself am always here to support you.

@@alexgilbertThank you Alex for the kind words. I’ve never regretted watching your videos, they make me very happy. I’ve watched some multiple times and will continue to watch your videos.
Hopefully as time goes on you can have a really good relationship with your birth mother.
My biological dad is unknown unfortunately. One of the things I was lied too about. Hopefully I can find out who he is, even if it’s bad.

My real father was a felon and I met him when I was 17. Turns out he was not a good person but I met 2 brothers from this experience and I learned my family history. The history was amazingly rich. My grandfather turns out grew up in an Indian boarding school. And I even went further back and found so many cool photos and stories. I hope you can find that even though you didn’t get the parent or parents you dreamed of, there are some really interesting stories about anyone’s background.

The story of our past may not always be easy to understand and take in, but I'm glad that you still work on that jigsaw puzzle, even if it takes its toll (please take care of yourself). I look forward to hear what you have found when you are ready to tell the story they way you think is right.

I love your journey, it’s very encouraging to see your positive attitude towards your family, huge fan of your work and research into your origin (quick question, which app do you use for family tree reference?)
