  • In this video I am giving you guys an in-depth breakdown of how I rig and fine-tune my Severne slalom race sails to get the best performance, speed and control out of them.
    I will be covering the following points:
    - How to rig the sail and get the cambers on effortlessly
    - A summary of all the Severne masts and for which sails I used them: ApexPro Redline SDM masts, Gorilla masts, Blue line masts, RDM Redline masts.
    - Ideal boom height
    - Downhaul tension
    - Outhaul tension
    - Harness line placement and length
    - Using the Adjustable Outhaul
    - Batten tension
    - Tack strap tension
    - Seat Harness vs waist harness
    - The best board, sail, fin combinations for various wind strengths
    - Severne sail components and design
    - The two biggest mistakes when rigging for slalom sailing
    As a team-rider for Severne I have been through 4 generations of their race sails: Reflex 7, Reflex 8, Mach 1 and Mach 2. Prior to becoming a Team-rider I have sailed my way through all the Severne Sails: The Gators, NCX sails, Turbot, Code Red sails before switching over to the high-end Severne race sails. In this process I have learnt how the sails operate and how to get the best performance and enjoyment out of them. I am happy to share with you my experiences and tips.

    It's so great to have a woman giving advice! We have different issues from the heavier guys and tips from 100kgs guys just don't fit it. I've had Severne gear for years - From wave sails to racesails and I learnt so much from this video. As a 62kg sailor I usually just put max downhaul on and go sailing ( because I can't put more on out there). I used to think the sails were just designed to be sailed overpowered by the bigger guys and only really got going about the time I'd need to change down.. I think I will be playing around with lightwind settings more.

I've always had the same issues as a lightweight, and through all the years of learning, competing and trying new things I'm so happy that I can make the sport more accessible for a wider range of windsurfers and lighter weights. Thank you so much for taking the time to give such positive feedback! 🤙

    Sailors with moderate fitness and strength are much better off with small sails, rigged for min wind. I gave up on 7.5 and even 6.5! I find my Ezzy cheetah 6.0 has all the power I need when on min downhaul setting, also when wind comes up even to 12 mph I love the new 5.0 on min. I think many people don’t realize they can do this. See my “Kailua windsurfing for seniors” and give it a go. I am 178lbs.

    Karo, some real nuggets of info in your video and love your passionate way to bring this across.
    Regarding the harness, I have always been a seat harness person. You should find yourself one with a higher back and give it another try. Specially for speed the seat allows you to get into a position where you can utilize a lower centre of gravity. The harness is applying the power through your hips and into your legs and not your back. As speed surfing is all about incremental improvements you should give it anther try.
    Are you now using the Mach 3 Severne sails and what are your thoughts?
    Stay safe and healthy in the crazy times!

    • @KarovanTonder
      @KarovanTonder  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks so much once again for your awesome feedback and your thoughts! 🤙 So glad you are enjoying my videos... For sure some of the seat harnesses with the higher backside should be a great alternative to the original lower seat. I have been switching back and fourth between the two for speed and slalom, but getting much better results and control with the waist. I think that the biggest aspect that gets to me is the greater amount of control I have over my board with the waist harness... It personally feels a lot more balanced between power from the core and legs instead of mainly the legs. I had to, however, develop a much stronger core through heavy core workouts, to optimise performance with the waist harness.. So that definitely helped me a lot! I think that it's also very much a personal preference between the two for speed and slalom... So many amazing windsurfers love the seat and specifically the higher positioned one you are referring to👌🤙😎 There is definitely no right or wrong, it's just so important to test both and see what feels more comfortable instead of just mainstream trends, especially when it comes to speed sailing. Glad that you found your sweet spot with the seat harness.... That's always the ultimate goal, getting that setup and sweet spot where it all feels in harmony and effortless with maximum control and minimal strain on the body!! 🤙😎🚀

      .... With regards to the Mach 3s, with covid there has been great delays in getting the new gear here, so I went straight over from Mach2 to ordering the Mach 4s. This order is still on its way to SA... I'm holding thumbs that it will be here soon so that I can still use it in the second half of our season!! 😎🤙 So at the moment I am still on my Mach 2s untill the M4s arrive here.... Will definitely do a proper review about the new gear once its all here. SA is a little remote, so everything takes so much longer with the added constraints on shipping due to covid restrictions. 🤙🤙Here in SA they have recently closed our beaches again over the festive season till mid January...looking so forward to get back on the water soon! Hope you keep healthy and safe as well in this difficult time🙏

    The dealer made a claim to Severne about these badly wrinkled sections in both 6.0 and 7.0 GT Turbos, stated that wrinkles do not go away because they are in the head section where the sails are not stretched when rigged, and they had to be replaced under warranty. Severne's response was that this had been a usual thing for mylar sails, told us to live with it, and refused the exchange. This put me and the dealer in a difficult position because I paid the top dollar for the equipment. This has never happened to me before with Ezzy, Neil Pryde, Goya or North for the past 30 years. My windsurfing buddies had a sour taste with Severne also. So, from now on, I will only buy windsurfing equipment from a company that stands behind its products.

    • @KarovanTonder
      @KarovanTonder  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Bob, thank you so much for your comment and positive message! I am so glad that my videos are helpful. I am actually currently working on a video of the fins that will go into detail about how they function and what my preferences are with regards flex, twist, size etc. The video will feature in the coming weeks. But just in short to answer your question, I prefer my fins slightly softer with a little more flex so that I can get away with using a slightly smaller size and still get amazing lift. When using a smaller size fin, it has less drag and therefore more speed. The only time when I go up in size is when the tide is running out and I don't have enough water grip. The gasoil 2018 fins were quite stiff in comparison to the 2019 fins. I definitely preferred the 2019 fins, as they gave me more effortless lift due to the increased flex. With my 5.5, 95L fox I mainly use 32, with my 6.2 I use 34 (incoming tide) and 36 (outgoing tide) with my 107L board, with my 7.0 I always use the 38 and my 107L board and with my 7.8 I use the 40 with my 115L board. I hope this helps!

    Hi Karo, I was gonna buy two Severne GT Turbos, but I have seen wrinkles in the mylar at the head section of both sails due to improper packaging. Do you happen to know a method to remove the wrinkles??? They look ugly because that part of the sail is not stretched out after rigging. Happy holidays :-))

    • @KarovanTonder
      @KarovanTonder  Před 2 lety

      Hi there! Sorry to hear about your experience. That is not a good place for a wrinkle, because, like you say, it remains floppy even after rigging. However, with time, it should improve a little as the sail gets exposed to the elements and stretches. It could also help to slightly tighten the top batten tension to help initially with stretching the surface tension. I unfortunately don’t have a method for this except to give it some time to mould more towards its original state. ✊✊

      Thank you so much for your nice message! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and that I can help with my channel...
      The Apex masts are super expensive. But they are a lot more durable than the original standard masts. The best option would be to wait for an Apex mast to become available on the secondhand market. If you use a normal mast that does not have that Apex shape, specifically in the Mach Severne Sails, it will have quite a big impact on the Sails performance and it may be very difficult for the sail to rorate properly. The person who bought my Mach 1 Sails tried the same thing, he rigged my 7 with a standard mast, but he struggled so much with the rotation of that sail, so he decided to buy the apex from me as well. I remember that with the Reflex 7s, it was quite easy to sail with a standard mast and have good rotation, but Severne has streamlined the designs of the Machs so much for the apex masts that it has almost become vital to have one. Try out a standard mast if you don't want to wait too long for the apex to become available on the second hand market, but then I would mabe put in more downhaul to help the sail rotate better. Also try then to remove some of the spacers to make room for the thicker mast section in the sail. I think that your best option is still to rather wait for an apex, I'm sure that soon when guys get their new gear, they will become more available. Is there perhaps a Severne team rider in your area that you can buy from his old gear? Once you have an apex, that mast will last you very long, because they are super durable, so it's a good investment 👌🤙

      Hi, I can just confirm what Karo says. I have 4 Overdrive M2/M3 sails and tried to rig them on a Severne 100% SDM masts of 2014 which have a thicker diameter. The cambers are very difficult to rotate even with all spacers removed and full downhaul/outhaul. Also the sails feel very twitchy. Put them on an Apex pro - which I bought afterwards - and it all just fits. Cambers rotate easily, the sail handles gusts much better. I have a bit the impression that with a different mast you have to have so much downhaul and outhaul in order to make the cams rotate that the shape of the sail is just not good anymore.
      I can just really recommend to buy the right Apex / Apex pro mast. It really does make a difference.

      @KarovanTonder  Před 3 lety

      @@horsemadf1 when downhauling the sail to the max, you have a very floppy leech and you may kill off the power in the sail. Its very good for going downwind, like at Luderitz, due to the bigger belly in the sail and much more twist to the top, but when slalom sailing and slightly underpowered, you need to release the downhaul slightly to tighten the leech and have less of a opened up twist... This will give may more stability and power in the sail, together with slightly releasing the outhaul.

    • @poehaaa4642
      @poehaaa4642 Před 4 lety +1

      Fair enough. I think I will have to get used to it than. You seem to be using the same fin size as the heavy guys, but in different wind strengths? And you mentioned in your Luderitz video that you used a longer fin to keep the nose of the board down. In general people say that a bigger fin will lift the nose more? And last: I would love to see a comparison between a Fox and a Futura. Which one suits what conditions? Thanks for the great windsurfing content!

    • @KarovanTonder
      @KarovanTonder  Před 4 lety +1

      The lift generated by the fin should not cause the nose of the board to lift, it lifts from the rear end of the board so that one can fly over the chop and go faster. If the nose of the board lifts, then that fin - board combo is not ideal or you have too much downhaul or you have a too big board for the wind that is blowing. With speed sailing, due to the super narrow nature of the boards, this lift, generated by the fin, will help to level out the board, it does not cause the nose to lift. In slalom sailing, exactly the same thing. With regards fin sizes, Gasoil Fins makes each and every fin custom for my weight and sailing purposes. Therefore, for heavier guys, their designs would differ slightly from mine. Here in Langebaan we have super strong tides, so being under finned in an outgoing tide is not ideal, therefore I go one size bigger on outgoing tides. With incoming tides I go down one size, because I have more water pressure to work with. But, like I said in the video, it's all down to personal preference and what works for your gear and sailing style. Thank you for the suggestion of making a comparison video between fox and futura.👌

Scary now is you get much faster as well. Thank you for this video as it helped heaps. I have older blue line mast that I think should work. Took out al spacers and still rotation very tight. Think with downhaul it might be better. But if a ext 20. The leach is very very loose and think too loose. Any suggestions?

      Hi Lard, I'm so happy to hear that my video helped! Yes it's such a great change from the gator to the Mach.... You get a lot more effortless speed and stability through the lulls and gusts. The rotation issue will be resolved when using an apex 460 mast instead of a standard mast... If you are still having troubles with rotation and you are using an apex mast with the correct extension, the downhaul could solve the problem. Downhaul the sail so that the leech loosens up from below the boomerang sign.... It should be quite loose so that the sail shapes into a spiral at the top when sailing. See if that improves the rotation. Let me know if it solved the problem.. 🤙🤙

      .... Just another suggestion, make sure your boom is wide enough for the shape of the Mach. If you use a freeride narrow boom, the sail won't be able to rotate freely and hit the sides of the boom.
