    Elderscrolls lore and mythology is actually really interesting. Its very Silmarillion-esque if you took away the Christian undertones. There are a bunch of readable books in all the games that detail the world’s creation story and pantheons from the perspectives of different religions and cultures in the ES world. Theres a fair few YT channels devoted to covering the lore in animated video essay styles, from the creation stories to the lore about all the different species, to the various wars and events that shaped the world etc.

She’s not even the leader of the Blades, she was essentially a squire by the time 30th of Frostfall happened and she doesn’t even stick to the order’s prime directives. She has zero authority to bar the Dragonborn from the Blades. She just thinks she can get away with it because the only other Blade present to challenge her is her geriatric stepfather. The Blades hadn’t been dragon hunters since the 1st Era, since then they had essentially served as sworn personal guard to the Dragonborn and acted as knights errant when not actively on duty as a guard. Delphine, in her zealotry isn’t even capable of understanding she is contradicting the very reason the Blades were first created as an order from the Dragonguard in the first place by rejecting the Dragonborn.

    Hey dear, that big guy on the horned helmet on the Elder Scrolls trailers? He isn't the father of the REALLY big girl. She is Lyris Titanborn, a character of the game, while the guy, along with the elf wizard lady and the breton ninja, are representations or embodiments of each of their alliances or the player characters. They are known as The Nord, The Elf and The Breton.
    This is set in a fantasy world called Nirn, with most of the games, plot and action taking place on the central continent of Tamriel, which means Dawn's Beauty in Aldmeris, the language of the long lost Aldmer race (Elder Folk, ancestors of all races of elves). It's political landscape is always shifting through the Eras, but in the settings of most games it's usually divided in ten realms for ten main sentient races: the Isles of Summerset of the Altmer or High Elves; the deep forests of Valenwood for the Bosmer or Wood Elves; the tropical jungles and arid deserts of Elsweyr, home to the Khajiit, a cat-folk that come in many breeds varying in size, physiology and powers, (from domestic cats with the wisdom of elven lords and the magic powers of archmages, to massive, bigger than horses bestial felines to human sized and shaped but still covered in fur and with feline attributes bipedal khajiits); Black Marsh aka Argonia, home to reptilian humanoids known to themselves as Saxhleel and to the rest of Tamriel as Argonians; Morrowind (formerly known as Resdayn), a diverse land made of prairies, volcanic ashlands and fungi forests home to the Dunmer or Dark Elves; the central valleys, forests and rolling hills of Cyrodiil, home to the Cyrodiils or Imperials, a race of humans; Hammerfell, desertic homeland of the great Redguard human warriors; High Rock, the hilly home to the Bretons, a proud race of human knights and wizards; occasionally Orsinium, the city state of the Orsimen pariahs, also known as Orcs, which gets destroyed and rebuilt every now and then; and Skyrim, the frozen homeland of the hardy, battle loving Nords.
    These trailers depict stuff from the central Second Era of Tamriel, a time in which the continent was divided among three warring factions: the Ebonheart Pact, made of nords, dunmer and argonians; the Daggerfall Covenant, made of bretons, redguards and orsimer; and the Aldmeri Dominion, made of altmer, bosmer and khajiits. They are all at war among themselves and with the remnants of the Cyrodiilic Empire, now ruled by its regent Mannimarco, an altmer necromancer that is trying to merge Tamriel with Coldharbor, the Realm of his Master, the Daedric Prince Molag Bal, Lord of Domination, Rape and Slavery, Father of Vampires. Those things that threw chains from the sky weren't ships, but Dark Anchors, portals that attempt to merge Tamriel with Coldharbor while allowing the minions of Molag to pour into Tamriel from Oblivion, an infernal set of outer realms or Planes of existence inhabited by Sixteen (except when they are Seventeen) demonic-godly beings called Daedric Princes, each of whom rules over its own plane of Oblivion.
    There are more trailers from The Elder Scrolls Online that picks up the action just after this one, but the whole thing is quite lengthy, but I would reccomend you watch them anyway. You could also watch the trailer for Skyrim, the latest main game of the Elder Scrolls series, or for the next release, Elder Scrolls VI: Hammerfell. The Skyrim one doesn't fail to give me chills to this very day!

      @@HannaHsOverInvested I really enjoy the horror of X Files or SCP because unlike other horror stories where characters or society as a whole react unrealistically (i.e. "lets split up!" or "we should investigate by ourselves"), in these types of stories society reacts to supernatural events like how you would expect them to react, with lots of beuracracy, red tape, and military intervention. It adds alot of realism; cold, hard reality. It makes the stories much more creepier.

  • @DonGeritch
    @DonGeritch Před 3 lety +154

    there are two issues I can think of when it comes to adapting games into movies. firstly big studious simply tend to not take games seriously, so they are not willing to invest too much in them and the movies that do end up being made tend to be subpar which reinforces this dismissive attitude. so I suppose it would take a new generation of studio executives who grew up with gaming to take reigns in order to get more good game movies made. which I believe is already starting to happen a bit maybe?
    secondly, the problem with adapting games into movies is that in a way it's always a downgrade of the experience. because interactivity is the biggest strength of games that other mediums don't have. and often you don't have much left when interactivity is removed. in a lot of games the story is superficial or irrelevant, or in some cases completely absent. but through interactivity, the player can create his own story or decide how the existing story is told at least. in a certain sense, a player becomes a co-author.
    and as a slight digression on that point... if you want to know what playing a Witcher game is like - imagine that it is your decision to make whether to kill Renfri or help her kill Stregobor. and then you know that whatever happens in the story is the consequence of your action or inaction. and if Geralt kills Renfri you'd get to truly share that burden with him as it was your decision, while when watching it on TV you can only sympathize with him.

    • @MarshGlyph
      @MarshGlyph Před 3 lety +15

      Totally agree with your two points. Unfortunately, when the game movie DOES get a good budget (like World of Warcraft) they tend to rely heavily on effects and have a less good story. I don't totally blame them, of course, because how are you going to compress so much lore into one movie? I would argue that Mass Effect is just PERFECT for a movie adaptation...but then, which are you going to focus on...ME1, 2, or 3? Each is a good story, but the entire story is what makes the narrative of the ME franchise. Conversely you don't want to do the game a disservice by rushing all of ME1 into the first act of a movie, you'd gloss over too many things.
      I would argue that Detroit: Becoming Human would be an AWESOME movie. They obviously would take some liberties with the decisions made by some characters, but a competent script writer, knowing the full story, could also "make decisions" that would yield the best story...

    • @pawelzietek
      @pawelzietek Před 3 lety +5

      I disagree, the biggest problem is that the games that are chosen to be adapted are usually the most succesful sales-wise rather than the most story-heavy.
      Remember that we've had adaptations of Mario, Warcraft and Assassins Creed rather than Heavy Rain or Firewatch.

    • @pexny689
      @pexny689 Před 3 lety +8

    • @DonGeritch
      @DonGeritch Před 3 lety +2

      @@pawelzietek I don't get how does it disprove my point exactly. the reason why successful sales-wise (and in terms of having a big established audience) games are chosen is that it's the only way for studio execs can see any merit in making them into a movie. that's the point. they don't understand games and so they don't see any merit in adapting them. and thus until there are more people at the leading positions of studios that 'get it', we can't even dream of some indie game getting a movie adaptation, no matter how good the story is.

    • @pawelzietek
      @pawelzietek Před 3 lety +1

      @@pexny689 which is why the adaptation was actually half decent.
      And even then - yes, the lore is there. But is there actually a proper story to be told in a movie format? I just don't believe there is any that is actually all that appealing (unless you move to the books).

    @ibrahimharmoush6942 Před 3 lety +110

    I would like to start this by saying, I am sorry for any grammatical mistakes. English is not my native language.
    So elder Scrolls:
    first of all, in the video you watched, the first 2 trailers are supposed to be the last in the video as they are the latest. The large woman is called Lyris Titanborn, she is an NPC (Non-Player Character) in the game and she is a half-gaint that's why she's that big. Every other main character you've seen is not an NPC they are a representation of the player characters.
    In the elder scrolls universe, there are 10 known races spread across 10 countries within the continent of Tamriel (elvish for the beauty of dawn):
    Altmer (high elf) (the super badass magic lady) - they are from the Summerset Isles
    Argonians (lizard people) - black marsh
    Bosmer (Wood Elf) - Valenwood
    Breton - High Rock (super ninja guy)
    Dunmer (Dark Elf) - Morrowind
    Imperial - Cyrodiil (the people defending the tower that looks like roman legionnaires )
    Khajiit (cat people) - Elsweyr
    Nord (Viking people, the one u kept calling the dad) - Skyrim
    Orsimer (Orc) - High Rock and Orsinium
    Redguard (Human - Hammerfell
    Now what you're watching is The Elderscrolls online which is An MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online roleplaying game), so each season there's a new country and a new plotline. so in the first 2 videos, it's in Skyrim and u have to deal with some Nefarious vampire plot. in the other one, it's taking time during a world war between 3 alliances:
    The Ademri Dominion (Altmer, Bosmer, and Khajit), The Daggerfall Covenant (Breton, Orsimer, and Redguard), and The Ebonheart pact (Argonian, Dumer,, and Nord). All of which are trying to claim Cyrodil (imperial) because it's the Seat of the empire that currently lacks a legitimate emperor.
    Now to talk about the anchors we have to talk about the cosmology of the world:
    The planet is called Nirn and you have 2 Celestial groups:
    -The Aedra (elvish for our ancestors) there's 9 of them and they're very benevolent and are known as our ancestors because they gave up a portion of their power to create the world
    -The Deadra ( elvish for not our ancestors). There are 2 groups of Deadra, regular Deadra like the ones you saw the 3 main characters fight (they come in many shapes like the armored people, the little imps and the giant monster are all considered Deadra (basically demons)), and Deadric Princes which are at the same level as the Aedra but out of the 17 of them there's like 5 that are Neutral at best, and the rest are mostly super evil. They Did not help build Nirn. They all live in oblivion Which is basically hell.
    The main antagonist of the plotline that you're watching is "Molag Bal the Deadric Prince of Domination "
    and he is trying to Drag Nirn into his realm of oblivion (cold harbor) using the anchors you saw while the world is already tearing its self up, with the help of a character you will see later Known as Manimarco the Worm King (who is the most powerful necromancer in this world).

      @@HannaHsOverInvested it can get a little convoluted, though. The stuff you saw focused on the sequel setting for Bioshock called Columbia, while the first setting is called Rapture. Both are meant to be dystopian "what-if's" where a person split from the world to form their ideal civilization. And - spoilers -it doesn't end well. Columbia split by going in the air, and Rapture split by going underwater. Both were accessible via lighthouse transports, which is one of the connectors. It admittedly gets even weirder linking the two, so I won't turn this into an even longer essay explaining it and simply say multiverse theory shenaniganery.

    First time watching this video and I heartily endorse your Discovery references.
    Control is a damned impressive piece of game design, but without experiencing it yourself, it'd be pretty hard to explain it to you.
    You play as Jesse Faden; she's a telekinetic badass who stumbles into and ultimately embraces a role that she doesn't really understand. The game is not too scary on the surface, but the meta narrative of it has pretty bleakly existential overtones.
    It's very much focused on the small scale reality of living in a massive universe that doesn't really matter or even follow it's own rules and blah blah words words...
    I've only just finished the game and I loved it!

    The Elder Scrolls trailers you watched were kinda backwards. Lyris Titanborn is the name of the tall woman. She's not introduced until you actually get into the story of the game. The trailers with the Vampires was stuff that happened quite some time after the stuff with the 3 factions fighting. Like a full 5 years after the 3 factions. The 3 factions fighting is setting up the story for the base game. So that stuff is happening before your character starts up. The official bethesda uk youtube channel has all that stuff listed under "The Three Fates Cinematic Trailer Supercut".
    As for the rest of the trailers... I don't remember how many trailers there were for this game, so I'll just go with the parts I know had actual cinematic trailers.
    After the pre-story, it would be the Morrowind trailer. Then Summerset. Then Elseweyr. THEN Greymoor, which is where Lyris and the vampires show up.
    So you've got 3 full expansions and a ton of smaller add on content worth of story before you get to the Vampires.

The Daedra (“evil god” for the most simplistic way I could describe them, not all are inherently evil) that’s causing that is one called Molag Bal. and he’s ALWAYS overcompensating. So the answer is... all of them. It’s never enough anchors. Even in the game Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) the damn things are all over the place. The last boss fight also adds to the whole overcompensating thing without spoiling anything or giving anything away.

    That particular elder scrolls trailer compilation is slightly out of order. The vampires and werewolves trailers are the newest. The guy with the horned helmet, the archer, and the elf are all sort of stand-ins for the players’ characters, representing the three factions players can choose when starting the game. They were all fighting each other because of a war on the continent the game takes place in where the three factions are trying to take control of the capital city. The chains coming from the sky are part of an invasion by what’s basically this worlds version of a demon.

  • @SpookyGhostIsHere
    @SpookyGhostIsHere Před 3 lety +1

    So here’s my take on the reason why videos games aren’t turned into movies more often. Games are meant to be enjoyed on an interactive level. Movies are meant to be passively enjoyed. The way storylines are written for games is different from movies.
    So for books, you know you can take a lot more time on character development than you can in a tv show. And the shows can do more development than a movie. They all have their place for sure, but the medium is inherently different. Games not only have a different time frame, but have a very different level of engagement because they function on the premise of the consumer working toward a goal and accomplishing it, which means their storylines are built with that being a major factor. What films often try to do with gaming movies is translate that experience of playing into film, but because the viewer is passively watching it’s not the same (try watching the Warcraft movie and then watching a Warcraft cinematic trailer). So converting a game into a movie requires reworking the narrative approach in ways that require a very “steady hand” that can pick apart the game’s narrative piece by piece to tell the difference between the gameplay elements and the narrative elements. It’s sort of like how for the game, becoming more powerful over time is very satisfying, but that’s a suspension of disbelief that is allowed because it’s a game. In normal storytelling, character power and progression is done differently than sheer “experience points”, and translating that satisfactory growth suddenly requires reworking the game systems into something that can make narrative sense in a 2 hour movie. Many games now also have 40+ hours of content, which is incredibly hard to boil down into something like a movie.
    So what game trailers do, is focus on something that feels inspiring and pushes people toward more action oriented thinking like “I want to do that” or “I want to be part of that story”. That sort of thing is easy to put into a short story or short video, but hard to turn into a full narrative arc that translates well to a movie where the consumer is supposed to walk away feeling like “wow, that is a memorable story”. You could also say it’s like telling a story and realizing that it’s the sort of thing that “you had to be there for it to make sense”, because it just doesn’t make for as good of a story very easily, and is easier to share as an experience. It’s possible, it’s just harder.
    That’s my view on it al least 🤷‍♂️

    The Elder Scrolls trailers don't generally have dialogue to explain what is happening. It's assumed that you already have some understanding of the lore/story. For the original trailer that you've watched multiple times, there are three factions fighting for control of Cyrodiil (the seat of the empire). You have the Ebonheart Pact (Nords (viking looking guys), the Argonians (lizard-people), and the Dunmer (dark elves)), the Aldmeri Dominion (Altmer (high elves), Bosmer (wood elves), and Khajiit (cat-people)), and the Daggerfall Covenant (Bretons (humans), Redguard (more humans), and Orsimer (orcs)). So, the factions are fighting over which one will rule the continent spanning empire and are just generally at war with each other. As for why the Nords were fighting the vampires...vampires are evil and want to blot out the sun.

  • @xavierlepage-daigle2593

    In Eso, it's a power struggle for the Ruby throne (emperorship) between the rulers of the three alliances. The throne gives a claim to rule over the people of the continent because it is considered a blessing from the chief diety of their pantheon. A demon lord with his nasty monsters invade the world during that war.
    The first trailers you watch were from the last expansion based around vampires in the northernmost region of the continent.

    Revenant (the Red Murderbot from Apex) was human at one point, but that was almost 300 years prior to the setting of Apex Legends. He was a member of a group of extremely powerful mercenaries called "The Syndicate", who eventually became an incredibly powerful organization after growing rich off of the Frontier War (a devastating conflict from the video game Titanfall 1 and 2. Apex takes place in the Titanfall universe).
    However, while Revenant was the Syndicate's deadliest assassin, he died at some point during a mission. The Syndicate however, didn't want to lose his skills. So they converted his consciousness into a robot body, turning him into what is known as a Simulacrum (basically a cyborg). Also just to fuck with Revenant, they made him think he was still human. He was their slave for 288 years, killing for them and dying repeatedly, forgetting every time he did so. But when he had that glass shard cut into him, it was a fluke that he realized he was a simulacrum, and for the past 30 years has been hunting down the members of the Syndicate, who now NOT ONLY rule the Outlands, but are also the people who run the Apex Games.
    That facility that Loba went to in the trailer was one of a handful of facilities which house copies of replacement bodies for Revenant, as well as his "Source Code" (his head). If you destroy a Simulacrum's source code then you destroy them permanently. Had Loba not allowed herself to rage out like she did then she would have killed Revenant's source code and gotten her revenge. Instead, her actions caused Rev's source code to be teleported to a more secure facility on another planet.

Our hero Jesse experiences an incident with one of these objects in her home town as a child with her brother. She ends up being the only survivor and escapes being grabbed by Control. The reason they're fighting is because the vampires are vampires and want to take over and use people as blood bags. They're attempting to conquer the northern province of Skyrim from their citadel deep underground, in the lost Dwarven ruins of Blackreach, using blood magic and sending Harrowstorms across the landscape to transform people into bloodfiends (mindless zombie vampire thralls)

    I don't know much about the entertainment industry, by my understanding as of why they don't make games into movies are:
    1. if the movies are going to involve real life actors, then there is your problem right here - casting choices, it is ALWAYS going to piss some, if not most, people off. cast the wrong person as your main protagonist or antagonist is a death sentence to the movie franchise
    2. A lot of the ground work of the story is in the gameplay itself. The developers can hide the expositions in gameplay so you learn about the backstory as you play. However, if you were to make it into a movie, it becomes less engaging since people are just WATCHING behind the screen instead of emerge themselves in the game world as players.
    3. When you play a game, especially a good game series such as "The Witcher", or "World of Warcraft", the players spend hundreds of hours in the game, learning about the characters, and the players become attached to them. Now try to do that in 90 - 120 minutes as a movie. A move can never do justice of a good game, but if you were to make several movies based on one game, then most likely the first one or two installments are going to be so boring (because again, heavy expositions and ground work are going to be in the first couple movies), it kills the franchise right there.

    The Elder Scrolls is probably one of my favorite series. There's SOOO much lore to them. The video you watched didn't have the trailers in the correct order, not sure why.
    I'm gonna try to explain the very first trailer you watched originally with the three circling each other at the end. First thing to understand is that there's 10 playable races within the game (Nord, Dark Elf, Argonian, High Elf, Kajiit, Breton, Orc, Wood Elf, Redguard and Imperial), these races are divided into three different alliances excluding the Imperials. (They're basically defending themselves from all of these alliances).
    In that first original video right after you see a small group attempting to climb a wall. Way off in the distance you can see the Imperial White-Gold Tower, which is where the emperor would be. That's what the Imperials are defending.
    The three "heros" you see are basically just characters that are figureheads for their Alliance. They're not THE leaders but they're characters you work along side with at some point or another.
    Later in the trailer when you see all these anchors coming down from a portal...that's a portal to Cold Harbour...which is like a portal to hell in it's own way. The ruler of Cold Harbour is one of the Daedric Princes named Molag Bal, which is the main antagonist of the base game. Each Daedric Prince has their own realm and want different things.
    Now with these two trailers you watched there was like a 4 or so year gap (kinda guessing tbh) between them. The one with the vampires was one of the newer dlc's.
    I should also mention that ESO is an MMP RPG (Massive Multiplayer Role Playing Game) and it's supposed to take place 1,000 years before The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
    Hope this helps a little, I tried not to overcomplicate things but TES is a complex....not Warhammer complex but still :p

    Apex legends is a battle royal game where 20 teams drop into a map, and fight to be the last alive so yeah very hunger games!
    For the robot guy his name is Revenant. You dont find out more through trailers but in game story so I'll do my best: he was the outland best assassin eventually a company called hammond's robotics took his head, and made him a simulacrum(which is a mind controlling a body but in a simulation to think he is still alive and just doing normal business instead of doing the really bad things without his knowledge for hundreds of years) him and loba are very intertwined. As for her, her powers consist of a bracelet that she throws and then teleports to its location, and her staff is a tool to help her steal things by doing the same thing but with items that are away from you.

    Couple reasons I can think of is that games are an active form of entertainment giving meaning and agency to the user's actions, which some of the best writers use to their advantage when telling their stories. You lose that when transferring to a more passive medium such as film similar to how you lose story exposition when transferring from novel to film (at least without having characters do exposition dumps). Additionally, for some of these larger games, they have much much longer of a time to ease the player into the world, establish lore, and have little interactions that keep adding to the story, as for some of the most story driven rpg games will have 20-50 hours of content (even if a majority of it is fighting mechanics).
    I think however, the main culprit is that when video games are transferred over, studio execs either dont really care about the stories and see it more as a cash grab.

    Someone probably mentioned it, but the Elder Scrolls Online trailers were out of order. The vampires & werewolves vs vikings trailers were for the latest expansion that came out this year, and the ones that played after were for the original trailers for the base game.
    The base game is about the alliance faction war and the plane meld. Basically the previous ruling empire has fallen and in it's place 3 alliances have sprung up to try and take it's place, but while they are all fighting each other, the daedric prince, Molog Bal (he's like a demonic god) is trying to pull the mortal realm into his own. The character you play is someone who got sacrificed to Molog Bal, meaning he has your soul, and you are on a quest to get it back, and stop the plane meld with the aid of the five companions (one of them being the really tall lady, in fact, she recuses you to begin with). In between that quest you are also running around helping whichever alliance you chose in character creation.
    The alliances are the Daggerfall Covenant (the awesome ninja dude) which is an alliance between the Bretons of High Rock (half-elves sort of), the Reguards of Hammerfell (token black people) and the Orcs of Orsinium (no, evil orcs here). The Aldmeri Dominion (the elf lady) who are the Altmer of Summerset (High Elves), the Bosmer of Valenwood (Wood Elves) and the Khajiit of Elsweyr (cat folk), and then there's the Ebonheart Pact (the viking dude) which is a barely held alliance of the Nords of Skyrim (vikings), Dunmer of Morrowind (Dark Elves, also not evil) and the Argonians of Blackmarsh (lizard folk). There's also 4th faction that's not playable which are the Imperials of Cyrodiil (aka the roman dudes) who's leadership been taken over by a group called the Worm Cult who worship Molog Bal.

    Hey Hannah. There is a thing where people record and put together all the cutscenes from a game, that is the closest you can get to a proper "movie" from a game. Just in case you would find some story that you would like to see more. Also if i may suggest. Game called "Godfall" has an amazing trailer.

    Control is like Men in Black only it’s for cryptic existential horror that possesses everyday objects and people mistake them for being haunted. I’d say that’s about the simplest way to put it. You infiltrate the building and take CONTROL (lulz) of multiple objects to figure out what the hell went wrong.

    Taking a quick break from my long career of lurking to (hopefully) explain the games to movies thing since it is a question that a lot of people on both sides of the equation (gamers and non-gamers) have been stumped by.
    In essence, the issue that, while adapting a book to a movie removes some of the fun of creating those worlds in your head it replaces it with an actual visual element. When you adapt a game to a movie you're removing the interactivity in a similar fashion but you aren't replacing it with anything, and a lot of the time game stories rely on that interactive element in a way that books don't.
    This ends up meaning that, in order to make a really good adaptation the writers have to put in a lot more legwork in order to make up for that, which defeats the purpose of the adaptation for a lot of film companies.
    Hope that was helpful, now back to lurking! **fades back into shadows**

    Some insight on the robot guy from the apex game is that he was actually a very successful hitman/bounty hunter for a company but when he died of natural causes the company didnt want to lose him as an asset so against his will they took his brain and uploaded his mind to the robots body and programmed him to think that he is still human turning him into an emotionless literal killing machine without his knowing about it. Now he seeks revenge on the entire company and anyone involved.

    Hi hannah, back again the rpg's you have covered are all pretty much similar. You pick a race which specialises in a ability so elven races are normally good at magic and archery. With elder scrolls you can choose how you would behave evil, good or neutral and really does affect the story the way you play. The story is driven by a decision or conversation wheel and dependant on your choice would affect the story and character you are talking to. Any how ĺike I said I'm enjoying your channel and all the best for the new year.
