Oh hey, a video where I actually am an expert for once!
The Baldur's Gate series is based on the tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons; these two are from the latest game, Baldur's Gate III, which is not out yet (thus, no more follow-up videos for you).
The purple tentacle creatures are called Mindflayers. They are an alien species with strong psionic powers, and they do not reproduce normally. Instead, they insert a tadpole into a humanoid host's brain through the eyes. The tadpole attaches to the brain and influences the person subtley - until a few weeks later, the process of ceromorphosis properly sets in, and the host turns into a mindflayer. That last step is what you saw in the first video; and though you did not see it, in the last few seconds, you can see thousands of mindflayers and a nautiloid ship in the sky.
In the second video, we see a Nautiloid ship - capable of flying through space and teleporting between dimensions - with a greatly diminished crew; in fact, only one mindflayer is left. He does however have captives - a female gith, and you, the game's protagonist. And he injects both of you with a tadpole to turn you into replacement crew.
Next, he abducts some humans from a city - presumably for the same reason. But suddenly, three gith on red dragons arrive and attack the ship!
(Sidenote: There are two gith societies, the Githyanki and the Githzerai. The ones shown here, the Githyanki, are actually classified as evil as well - but, the enemy of my enemy and all that. The Gith were slaves of the mindflayers in the distant past (like many races in D&D) but broke free, and hunt mindflayers to this day. The only thing a Githzerai hates more than a Githyanki, and the other way around, is a mindflayer).
The Gith quickly damage the ship, and the mindflayer is forced to teleport away - but the gith follow. Just before the dragon can destroy the tadpoles and the infected humanoids, the ship teleports again - but I don't think it has another jump in it. This is where the game starts: You and your compatriots are stranded somewhere, and infected with a mindflayer tadpole. Where does it go from there? Well, we'll have to play the game!

Exceptionally well explained. I was about to launch into the same explanation. So glad I checked the comments first. The only confusing thing I can add is that the Illithid (mindflayers) are also time travelers (as a race) and have a very racial superiority thing going. Granted, from the time they are from, it was truth ( As GITH were once humans they enslaved). It is very Whovian in its outlook on time. And, yes, for the world's largest RPG for 45 years, this is all considered canon.

  • @Drocksas
    @Drocksas Před 4 lety +31

So, as one who adores the Dishonored games, here's a tl;dr on the story.
Corvo Attano (Main character) was the royal protector of his empress. She is assassinated, and the powers that be frame him for the murder. So he goes for revenge (either lethal or non-lethal) in order to clear his name and save the Empress' daughter. A mystical being called the Outsider takes an interest in Corvo and give him his mark, granting him mysic powers. Steampunk-esque shenanigans with some magic ensue.
For the second game, you either pick Corvo or Emily Caldwin (aforementioned daughter of deceased empress who assumes the throne) and one or the other is in turn, as the name suggests, dishonored and cast out of their home and once again go on a journey to clear their name, depose the usurper, and save whichever one you didn't pick to begin with. It's not exactly unique in terms of the formula, but it's still a fun ride

What happened in that first video is the end of the transformation. The beginning of the horrifying calamity is when the tadpole is inserted into the eye socket in the second video.

The people of the city are really lucky, actually, as neither the dragon-guys or the squid-guys care too much about collateral damage, and most places caught between them end up as some variation of a smoking crater. It could have been a LOT worse. The squid-guys show up, and the citizens are like, "This is bad." The dragon guys show up and they're like, "Great, well now we're ALL dead." This is a cult series of tabletop role-playing games known all over the world, it influenced the development of the now popular geek culture in the early 70s ! It was created in the same years as Warhammer ( which I so often repeat). If you played role-playing games , like the Witcher, then say thank you to Dungeons and Dragons, without them we would not have this genre, and without the universe of the Forgotten realms, we would not have a popular fantasy culture like almost all fantasy literature of the 20th and 21st centuries !

It probably will not enough to make a new video on, but it's there for your own enjoyment. Also, the game just recently released into early access, which is a very unfinished early version of the game. It's expected to fully release probably at the end of next year. I will say even though you are a self-described "non-gamer," if you liked the trailer this is a very easy game to get into. It's not very mechanically demanding to play, as it's a lot more about strategy. So Baldur's gate is based on D&D and those tentacle creatures are called Illithid or Mind Flayers. They basically reproduce by making those maggot things, said maggots go into the brains of people, eat their brains, and mutate the host body in another Illithid. Illithid are super disturbing psychics that eat brains. I'd love to teach you D&D sometime. It's fun and not disturbing at times at all!

Mindflayers and the Gith. The goblin/orcish like humanoids used to be enslaved by the mindflayers, now they hunt them down across the universe with their red dragons. They're not really "good guys" as red dragons are almost always evil. It's more of a "lesser of two evils" kinda dichotomy.

Baldur's Gate has a first part. One of the best games of all times... but a little outdated nowadays.
The gaming community is waiting for a second part for very long now. Baldur's Gate is COMPLEX.
Dishonored 1 is about Corvo, the lover of the Queen, sentenced to die for killing his love.
He breaks free and saves his and the Queens daughter - as brutally, or as humane, as the player wants.
In Dishonored 2 the player can play Corvo, revenging his daughters kidnapping, or one can play as Emelie the Queen,
her throne stolen, her father killed and the memory of her mother soiled.
A lot of freedom to behave very differtently in every new play-through.

To your query on the 2nd BG3 cinematic: those smaller creatures are how Mind Flayers/Illithids reproduce. As for the Githyanki on the (pact) Red Dragons; Githyanki are as evil as Illithids in their own way (as are Red Dragons), except when they get word of Illithids roaming somewhere. They'll stop at nothing to exterminate them (D&D lore on the Illithids & GithYanki & Githzerai is fascinating). The reason the Red Dragons are allowing the Githyanki to ride them is due to a pact the Githyanki made with Tiamat eons ago, which is another tale in itself.
The joke among D&Ders when they saw the 2nd cinematic is that it's probably the 1st & LAST time anyone in the Forgotten Realms has said "Thank the gods for the Red Dragons'.

There's a surprisingly large amount of people who didn't realised Emily was the protagonist's daughter because the first game never explicitly tells you so. But if you pay attention you can find very obvious clues (Emily makes the classic drawing of her family and the dad is Corvo, you can read about rumours implying that the empress was sleeping with the royal protector which is Korvo and finally there's no mention of a father for Emily or a husband for the Empress anywhere in the game). The second game makes their lineage official but it was fun playing the first game, finding a drawing in her room and it suddenly clicking that he wasn't just trying to save her because she's the daughter of the person he was protecting but because she's his daughter as well.

Guest appearances in comics are a way to see what interest there is for a character. Plus a black marvel character that got multiple movies is Blade, who's is a "younger" character. Also just to add Star Trek: Discovery isn't the first female captain, that was as fare as I know in Star Trek: Voyager. The original Zulu, George Takei, was the first character were they hinted that he was gay. He didn't have any love interests, George asked Gene if Zulu shouldn't be openly gay, Gene didn't think it was time for that(in the 1960's). Plus that had a black female main character. All I'm saying is that it's easy to get offended and see monsters if you keep looking for them. No one is perfect.

    2:00 Yeeeaah...
This is one of the scariest part of the Dungeons and Dragons lore; the illithids, more commonly knowed has the Mind-Flayers...
They are a species of Alien Chtuhlu-esque from the Far reaches of SPace, that doesn't "reproduce" like other living beings...
They put a Tadpole ( a baby Mind flayer) into someone eye or nose, the Tadpole then slowly eat the brains out, and replace it, taking control over the mind and the body of the Host, the Host is alive for the whole process, and in most cases isn't even axare that he is been replaced...
Since the Tadpole will copy the memories of the Host, until it reaches maturity and Finish the process called Cerembromorphosis, where the Host and the tadpole, becomes a full fledged Mind Flayer.
They are powerfull Psychics( they are one of the few races of D&D that doesn't use magic, but rather psychic powers), and they Eat Brains...
They are also a race of Dominant Slavers, taking other races in their service, but their Empire wich spanned large chunks of the Galaxy, was brought down by a Slave Rebellion, and now they are fragemented and hunted down, and there's also some time travelling fuckery involved.
4:50 this is called a Nautiloid ship, it is part Flying/Space ship, part living Giant Calamari creature.
They've become incrisingly rare since the fall of the illithid Empire, since the fleeing illithids don't have the resources and infrastructures anymore to build more of them.
These are Bonded through a Psychic and Telepathic link to the illithid that pilotes it.
5:45 Huuh, Good guys, yes and No, they are indeed the enemies of the illithids, they where the illithids favorites Slaves and Hosts, they are the Githyankis, they have latent Psyonic powers and are pretty good Martial combatants, wich was one of the reasons why the Illithids liked to use them as Hosts.
Giths are also kinda Pirates/Raiders, and rarely care for others than their own race, results of millenia's of Slavery can do that...
After the Rebellion and te fall of the Empire, the Githyanki Queen made a Pact with Tiamat, the Evil Dragon Queen, so that some of the Giths would become Dragon Ridders, and help them in the Hunt for Illithids.
They use the Power of the Red Dragons and their Planeshifting knowledges and powers( Planeshift is the ability to travel /open portals to other Dimensions/Planes, D&D is a game based on a Multiverse and multiple Planes of existance Structure) to Hunt donw Mind Flayers no matter where they are or flee.
Red Dragons are amongst the most aggresive and Foul of the Chromatic Dragons( Dragons are divided in Colors, Red, Green, Blue, Black and WHite, Chromatic Dragons are usually all narcistic and evil basterds, then you have the Metallic Dragons- Bronze, Silver, Gold, Copper and Platinium, who are usually Neutral or Good, and wich are always at odds with the Chromatic Dragons)
7:45 this was the "short" version of the Cinematic of the game, there since a week or two an extended version of it, where you see the final minute of the cinematic, wich till then was kept secret.

      @Mugthraka Před 3 lety

@@HannaHsOverInvested There are Good guys in D&D, but yeah in this instance, its more like "Good" guys depending on who is asking and on opinions.
Like i said the Giths are the Illithids sworn enemies, so if they kill an Illithid and by the same occasion "saves" people who where captured or threatened by them, they can be seen as the "Good" guys.
But Giths are also pirates and raiders most of the time, now it is not like a Monolithic point of view shared by all the Giths.
The Only thing that is universaly sahred by ALL Giths are their hatred for Illithids and their abominations.
For the rest the race as a whole is eclectic enough to have various mind sets and world views.
