You can actually play through the ENTIRETY of the franchise without killing anyone, save for a tiny number of key characters, so the bloodshed in the trailers isn't necessarily how the game plays out.

    Literary background:
Deus Ex is an old Latin phrase, often used in Shakespearean-era theatre.
It literally means "From God" referring to a stage device used to, for example, raise and lower theatrical equipment, props and even actors, on stage. Deus Ex Machina; God From The Machine.

In literary terms it generally refers to a plot device where an important problem is solved by an ancillary, generally overpowered character (or other device) that is typically introduced suddenly, rather than our main characters themselves. It's often used as a criticism of lazy storytelling. It comes from the idea of how, in some old plays, a god character is introduced, and lowered into the stage using a machine, in order to solve a major problem for the protagonists.

    • @dimalex8
      @dimalex8 Před 8 měsíci +2

It comes from ancient Greek theatre, when they would create the gods intervention with mechanisms on the stage. So they would say God came from a machine.
It's still used in modern Greek to say that a situation or someone was rescued unexpectedly at the last minute

Human Revolution and Mankind Divided are both Prequals to the original game from 2000 which was set in the year 2052 but are not connected in terms of story or characters as you play as two different people Adam Jensen who is the protagonist in Human Revolution and Mankind Divided and JC Denton who we play as in Deus Ex from 2000. These games just take place in the same universe pretty much showing a younger side to the Deus Ex universes when augmentations were seen as new and "dangerous" to some people. The first game had a much more retro 1990s early 2000s feel in terms of it's music, designs, and fashion being heavily inspired by the Matrix in the main characters look and the world being inspired by classic Cyberpunk movies such as Total Recall, Bladerunner etc. The game also has a more cold tone with the colour blue being one of the main colours.
The prequals on the other hand have a more modern feel with some renaissance elements and retro designs like the News reporter looking like she was inspired by Blade Runner or The Fifth Element these games are set in the year 2027 and 2028 much closer to us timeline wise which explains the more modern feel. The prequals more so Human revolution have a much more warmer feel with Orange being the main colour giving it a unique feel and tone. Both have an amazing soundtrack but to me Deus Ex from 2000 is my favourite an amazing soundtrack just so good up there with Perfect Dark both being Cyberpunk games which came out a year apart both having this very 1990s feel. Deus Ex comes out on top mostly because my Nostalgia for the soundtrack even though i love both the prequal music and the classic. Below i have some links to the Deus Ex soundtrack and the intro to the first game.

So basically to answer your question of how did the world in Deus ex got to where it is.
In Deus Ex: Human revolution, at the end of the game you experience an event called the Aug incident. In which, a signal was broadcasted that made every augmented person (with the exception of Adam Jensen aka you) into a feral killing machine. The game ends with you shutting down the signal, and telling the world what caused it. Which by the time Mankind Divided takes place, gave every non augmented person fear of the augment, leading to augment people being treated like second class citizens, being relocated to ghettos, etc. .

Short summary from my vague memory of the games: there was a breakthrough in tech and biological augments for like amputees and soldiers “Human Revolution”. The scientist lady who made it was killed by augmented terrorists and severely injured the head of security Jenkins (the guy you play as) and the only way to keep him alive was to augment almost every part of his body with prototype augments leaving him more machine than man. He spends most of the game hunting down the terrorists and trying to figure out why they targeted his presumed lover. He finds out that there’s a sort of “rampage” virus that will hijack anyone with augments causing them to attack anyone in the vacinity against their will. Since most augments are tied to your nervous system it’s kinda like brainwashing. But after this happened Jenkins stopped the virus but caused everyone to have an intense fear towards anyone augmented. Even though it wasn’t their fault it quickly became a police state where any and all augmented people regardless of reason were judged as terrorists. But since it was innocent people forced to do that against their will it created hatred between augmented and non-augmented hence “Mankind Divided”

  • @Jameskaimuki

Deus Ex series has some great story telling. The Mankind Divided trailer highlighted one of the games signature themes that 'every choice has a consequence' even the good/right choices. Adam saves the guy in the yellow jacket from the anti-augmentation guys, but because of that prejudice the guy join a terrorist organization and kills loads of other people. Kind of like in the Witcher where there is no right choice only the lesser of two evils.

The Setup and Plot in shot:
The player take the role of Adam Jensen the main guy you see in the trailer.
    Setup:
We have found a way to make artificial limbs and organs, this shows great promise and everything is great people are getting arms and legs after accidents or vital organs.
But before long a symptom emerges, like a body might reject a transplant so will it reject the implants given time.
This leads to death and a lot of chaos, but a new drug is made that fixes this issue. The new issue, this drug is not free. So if you are in a accident they will save you by giving you replaced parts but you have to pay for the drug to keep on living.
    Plot:
We come in as Adam Jensen a security specialist making sure a cooperate building is safe.
Its attacked Adam are mortally wounded, but his boss is filthy rich so he just upgrades Adam to super human with all sorts of military grade stuff. (You know cause you're his security guy.)
From here the game is all about paths, not only what you chose to do but alt so a bit of what you neglected. (It's very engaging ^^)
You can chose to ignore all the people that can't get the drug, and thank your lucky stars you are well paid. Do as the boss says and have a fun.
Or you could go out of your way to help people seek out people that might help on a larger scale and try to color the outcome of the shitty situation.
Or mix it up based on what you can live with. :D

You pretty much nailed the surface of the main setting of both Human Revolution and Mankind Divided. Augmented people vs non-augmented + big corporations pulling the strings behind the scenes to pull off some shady agenda of theirs.
There is also a very important "thing" about Adam Jensen (the protagonist of these two games and trailers) that he doesn't even realize at first, and even when he does, he doesn't fully understand it. That "thing" that makes him special at the same time makes him more involved into this global conspiracy than he realizes.
There is a lot of philosophical and sociological topics touched by the stories of these games, it might as well be one of gaming's best franchises that could easily be translated into a T.V. series and have a lot of cool stuff happen in it and its characters.
While not exactly an underrated couple of games, they are overlooked by a lot of people IMO. I would recommend you to watch the opening credits from both of these games too. They were superbly done, and Michael McCann's score is astonishing.

Human Revolution is all about a 21st century Renaissance, where human augmentation has begun to gain traction and allowed society to transcend their humanity with the use of technology. Adam Jensen is a security director for Sarif Industries, and is nearly killed during an assault on Sarif HQ. He's saved, but at the cost of substantial damage to his body, resulting in him practically becoming a cyborg. His lover and lead developer on the human augmentation project, Megan, is kidnapped by a group of paramilitary operatives, and Adam (at the behest of his boss, David Sarif) is tasked with locating Megan.
Mankind Divided takes place a couple of years after the first, with Adam now working as an agent for INTERPOL in Prague. The world has begun to treat the augmented like second-class citizens as a result of actions that took place during the first title. The city is devastated by a mass bombing of a train station in an attack by a group of augmented extremists seeking liberation.

These games could actually use a Prequel themselves however it shows you a glimpse of the world I guess just as we started normalizing Augmentations.
I think you should really sit down and play this game starting with Human Revolution.
The original creators of Deus Ex have predicted so many current events with some freakish accuracy in relation to when they actually happened in our world.
Human Revolution to me is such a powerful and intriguing game. I wish the creators would back and create more from that world.
Like you actually want to complete the story and get invested in the characters in the world.

The first trailer you watched was for a prequel game that came out like 10 years ago, about the intro of augmentations (mechanical) and the conflict created as it caused pre-existing disparities to worsen (who can afford to get the cutting edge stuff that improve their ability to do.. everything?). It also demonstrates the rise of PMCs and how companies can influence things more than governments, how society becomes captive to the desires of board members and shareholders. Good stuff.

The Deus Ex games are classics and that first trailer is awesome. Love the references to early the infancy of human knowledge mixed with clear Icarus and even a bit of a Rembrandt nod. I also use that quote " If you want to make enemies, try to change things" all the time because cynical or not its absolutely been proven true in both history and basic physics. Every action has a equal and opposite reaction. Hell its even in the term for those who oppose progress and change in society, "reactionaries".

Breaking down the story of how things got to where it was in the game.
Human augmentation advanced significantly, but as with all new tech, some people are afraid of change and new things. Mankind literally divides between the ones who embrace augmentation, and those who're afraid of it.
But as with all stories like these, inevitably terrorist plots that happens to involve augmented people gave the natural humans an excuse to exercise their fear, and governments started stripping rights from the augmented, lock them away, put them in camps. (Real history repeats itself)
The main character, Adam Jensen, worked for the biggest augmentation tech company, was injured on the job. He was then augmented while he was unconsious to save his life. So he end up in a position between the augmented population and the natural human population, not really belonging in either.
It's quite an interesting story, I really wish someone would make a live action movie of it already so that more people get to enjoy it.
But hey, Netflix made the Witcher, so maybe they'll one day come around to this...hopefully?

Basically in this series there's no black and white good and evil. Jensen (the main character) is just trying his best to prevent the world from descending into chaos, while trying to get to the bottom of the underlying conspiracy of a shadow government trying to maintain control of the world. It's become hard for them to maintain control because now anyone on the street could be a literal living weapon.

Deus Ex is a great series. It falls into the cyberpunk genre of sci-fi, and despite not being open world, it kind of did it better than recent games that take place in that genre (or are named after it.) Also, despite the trailers looking very action pew-pew oriented, a lot of it is very detective noir like more traditional cyberpunk.

The genre is cyberpunk, a world where the governments failed and crushes and the superpowers are corporates, while holding their own private army and controlling information and tech. In general, you are either working for a corporate or not. The genre usually involved body augmentation (or cybernetic implants). In some cases, even plugging oneself directly into the network via an implant that projects your mind/conscious into it.
There are many games, video and tabletop, literature, and movies in the Genre. For movies/tv - Blade Runner, Altered Carboon, Johnny Mnemonic etc.
For books, the 2 which are usually considered the classic ones are Neuromancer and Snow Crash (both are really good)

    /end edit
Whenever someone mentions "Deus Ex" online, someone else will reinstall "Deus Ex".
That's how incredibly awesome the original one was.
We were three friends, all invested in these kinds of games. We started playing the first game at the same time. So we made a pact only to advance four missions per day, so we could compare the different outcomes. One of my friends chose the ultra-sneaky, as little killing as possible route, the other chose the kill-everything version, and I was somewhere in the middle ground, with a completionist approach, not totally going out of my way to prevent a kill, but also not being obverse to a few mission kills.
We all met up one day to discuss a mission in Paris. The 'kill-all-and-let-God-sort-em-out" guy asked us how me managed to pass all of the squads of massive killer bots patrolling the streets. I looked at him and asked him what squads of killer bots? I had two bots total throughout the mission, with one being inactive, only activating once I tripped an alarm, and they could easily be bypassed by skirting around them.
The peaceful, sneaky guy asked : "What bots?!? There were bots in Paris? You guys sure?"
We discussed back and forth, and even reloaded some of the saves. We found out that the missions were structured completely differently depending on our previous play-through.
After we had discussed the actual mission, we talked about the inter-mission cut-scenes. Again, we found that the devs had created three completely different versions of 'escaping' from Paris.
In the kill-all version he had to escape with a helicopter from a roof, and was shot down somewhere over the Atlantic only to be fished out of the ocean by the ship he was supposed to land on.
I hijacked a jet hidden somewhere, but reached New York otherwise unattacked. The peaceful guy told us, the cut-scene was almost boring as he simply got on a commercial air plane and flew back to NY.
That's the kind of development devotion lost to most studios today.

At the beginning of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Jensen is talking to Malik, and he says, "I can only deal with threats that I can see". He says this at the train-station just before it gets bombed. He says it while looking at a guy in a yellow hood. The guy in the yellow hood is the one who bombed the train-station. This is confirmed when you get sent to Golem City and hack the "apartment" that has his computer in it. It is also confirmed back at TF29 when Chan says that there were yellow fibers in the blast zone.

    My time to shine!
So, quick history lesson, the game franchise Deus Ex has been around since the 90s. The two game trailers you watched are prequels to the first game. The entire premise of the series is uncovering and if you decide, exposing, the games big bad villain, the Illuminati.
Having played the first game, Deus Ex, as a kid I didn't really appreciate how in depth the story was, theres topics discussed like police states, utopian civilizations, various philosophical discussions and many more.
In the prequels that you watched, the games writing in dialed back a LOT, which is understandable I suppose. The main thing you need to know is that in Human Revolution, the science of body augmentation is an emerging science, but a recent discovery could propel humanity forward in advancement by generations. The Illuminati do not want this to happen because it means they can no long control everything in the world.
As Adam Jensen, the character you play as, you are tasked with uncovering this truth and exposing it. However towards the end of the game things take a turn for the worse when a member of the Illuminati goes and commits a war crime basically turned all augmented people on this deep sea installation crazy, he accomplished this by basically putting a virus in everyone who got the latest software update downloaded into their brains. They need this updates because they won't be able to use their augments if they dont update.
The world, already skeptical of augmented humans, get their prejudices confirmed when the augmented people around the world start going mad. You get to shut down the signal that is broadcasting but you also have a choice.
Blame a "humanitarian" organization for this attack, allowing human augmentation to continue.
Blame augmentation corporations for this attack, allowing human augmentation to become regulated by the government, which is what the Illuminati want
Expose the Illuminati and tell the world what they did and that they exist.
Or, just destroy the facility and all evidence of the event, preventing the world from knowing what happend. Which will allow for people to draw their own conclusions, after all, who are you to decide the fate of humanity?
    (I always chose option 4.)
Finally, Mankind Divided picks up shortly after Human Revolution. The cannon ending is that you chose to destroy the facility broadcasting the signal and all the evidence with it.
Basically humans that are augmented are forced to live in detention zones because the world at large is afraid of them. You continue your story as the same protagonist from the last game. How you survived is a bit of a mystery, but eventually you start to work at a UN sanctioned task force that is meant to respond to global terrorism threats. I forgot the name, but it eventually becomes UNATCO (Which is the organization you work for the first Deus Ex game.)
While working for them, you are also following up on leads about the Illuminati, and why they are so interested in you.
Eventually there is a law going to passed that will give augmented humans their rights back, sort of, and the Illuminati doesn't want that to happen. The ending of the game is nothing special, you stop a generic terrorist plot which would have made the law to give augmented humans their rights back impossible to pass and save the day. Or you can choose to let the plot unfold and go after your last link to the Illuminati. In the end, the ending you choose doesn't really matter because the game ends on a cliff hanger, that probably will not be resolved.
Mankind Divided received poor sales and average reviews by critics. Which in turn made the company responsible for publishing the game to put the series on hiatus. As it stands now, there is no word of a sequel being made.
This series has always been for a niche crowd, and Square Enix (the publisher) wanted to market it to a wider audience, which meant sacrificing a lot of mechanics and story details to be cut because they didn't want to alienate the wider consumer base.
But since you like conspiracy theories, interesting characters, and since you are marshmallow as you put it, you can play these games without killing a single person, besides a few key characters. If you ever decide to pick this game franchise up, I'm sure you'll be invested in its story.
Wow, that was longer than I expected it be. Hopefully you get to read this Hannah! And if you are reading this then I hope I answered all of your questions.

It's worth checking the Deus Ex wikipedia page. There were actually FIVE games in the series (Deus Ex, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Deus Ex: The Fall and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided) with Human Revolution and Mankind Divided being 3rd and 5th released. Chronologically their correct order in a timeline would be The Fall, Human Revolution, Mankind Divided, Deus Ex and Invisible War.
They were fantastic games set in a dystopian cyberpunk version of our future, and had many conspiracies and even a few aliens and even involved groups like the Illuminati, Majestic 12, FEMA and even the Knights Templar in places :)
The series sees you play two main protagonists one J C Denton an augmented agent of the United Nations Anti terrorist Coalition (U.N.A.T.C.O) and later Adam Jenson, who was a security chief for a biotech company that survives a terrorist attack (barely) while watching the woman he loves seemingly die, and then due to terms in his contract is forced to undergo almost complete radical augmentation procedures which replace most of his body.
It is a fantastic series that was also one of the first game series that allowed you to approach problems from multiple angles, you could fight, or use stealth, and it had a lot of freedom, and puts you in the position of asking some fairly large decisions surrounding the role of transhumanism and the future of humanity.

Regarding Deus Ex, I guess for the game maker, the "how we get here" was never that important, as they reflected on many contemporary issues, for example, major news studio controlling the narrative of the an incident, humans resisting and later fighting against new/different "people", major corps having more power than government. It's a pretty standard cyberpunk story really.

These two games are a prequel to the original Deus Ex which is considered a seminal game. A mature, conspiracy laden story with twists, turns and interesting characters. There are very few if any NPCs that you can't kill without ending the story prematurely. Comparatively speaking, the prequel games have a much more simplified story compared to the original. If you want a great break down, you should look up Ross's Game Dungeon. He goes through the games and show cases how the original game as an example, borrows heavily from real life and actually predicted a lot of things. It's really fascinating.

  • @ashwynnnewkirk
    @ashwynnnewkirk Před 2 lety

Funny part is... Deus EX human revolution and mankind divided are both, in a way, an explanation of "how we got there" to the original game Deus Ex and it's sequel Invisible war.
The whole thing is about conspiracies and chillingly accurately predicts the future. In the original game came out in 2000 and the conspiracy there used first a big terrorist attack against the US symbol (Although there it was a Statue of liberty not WTC) and then a deadly disease and climate change to put the people under control. They used their control of the media to dictate what the people think. They used the "smart" world to know everything about everyone. They created a divided society through augumentation (Regular people can't compete with superior augumented people who are stronger, faster, smarter...) and then they created scarcity of the drug that prevented the implants to be rejected by the body - making the superior augmented class entirely dependent on them.
The whole thing is an incredible story, with amazing characters and yeah... if something "happy" is not a word I would use to describe it. It definitely leaves a lasting impact on you.

The date is so close because the original game was from the late 90s and was set farther in the future, and while it hits a little close to home these days with the conspiracies, the actual concept for the first game was just “what if all the conspiracies you’ve ever heard were actually true”. It was all about the Illuminati and shadow governments etc. these trailers are for the prequel games they made later, which explain how the world got to where the original was. It’s a series very much about the governments and rich abusing the poor for their own benefit and you being kind of caught inbetween as someone that discovers the truth. Okay, you said that you would like to know what happened to make people see augmented ones as outcasts, forcing them into ghettos and do on. I think I can shed some light on that.
For everyone who is thinking about playing the games after those trailers: consider this your spoiler warning.
You've actually watched them in the right order. So in the first game Adam Jensen, who is our protagonist, works as a security chief for the guy you saw in the first trailer giving him orders, the guy behind this great augmentation innovation. And some people (brace your conspiracy loving self), technically the Illuminati, are non too happy about that.
Adam's girlfriend finds a very important thing in protagonist's DNA which solves the biggest problem with augmentation - rejection by the host's body that requires frequent doses of a drug, neuroposin, i believe it's called.
Just as she is about to present her studies (of which Adam has no idea of), she gets kidnapped and Adam gets almost killed with a gallon of acid (you saw a glimpse of her kidnapping in the first trailer). As he works for the tech messiah himself, Adam gets heavily augmented with top notch gear in order to save his life. Hence the famous opening phrase of the first trailer:"I never asked for this".
And the game begins. We are to find our love and several other scientists that were kidnapped.
As we spend good 20-25 hours of story step my step uncovering the exact reasons and exact events of that day, we at the very end come to the shocking conclusion that not only she used info in our DNA to do her research but she also agreed to work for people who kidnapped her and made her do further research and use it to help trigger violent thoughts and actions in people with augmentations. (A bit of a first Kingsman movie plot, I know)
Right before we are actually able to confront the people behind all of those deeds every augmented person is rushed to these special clinics for some kind of hardware fix. As you can guess, the fun begins.
As we arrive to an enormous building... construction site... Something made by humans that's also on water (you can see it looking like a tower in the last shots of the first trailer) they trigger the thing and people go on a murderous rampage.
You meet the person in charge and in a dialogue-based boss fight can actually persuade them to turn everything off willingly. The main idea is that they wanted to scare people away from progress and from creating this uncertainty of the question of what do we call human.
Your next and last big decision is to explain to the public what the hell happened. You can do that by getting to the news person you see on the screen all game (and in trailers as well). There's the last boss battle with the security of the place and you find out that the news person is an AI of sorts. Another illusion.
You can ask them to alter the message broadcasted and overall you got four choices .Two of them require additional actions - saving the people who give you those two ideas and another one requires no action which results in collapse of this structure with basically no message letting people decide for themselves. The end monologue of Adam that's narrating three following events is also dependant on your playstyle, as some people have already mentioned here: you can go the whole game with no murder, kill some people or be a murderous psychopath. It gives each choice 3 more variations giving us total of twelve endings.
Oh yeah, our options. You can either tell the truth about Illuminati, blame everything on extremists and ask for no restrictions on further research, conseal Illuminati involvement and get people to blame science or, as I said, let them decide with no info.
The latter choice is seen as the canon one, as the developers have said that while making the game they felt like this is the thing Adam would do. Especially, as you see the place destroyed and Adam in water in the trailer to the next game. And as we see people becoming fearful and imposing anti augmented laws in the next game, receiving varied response from peaceful negotiation to terrorism.
However, we have no confirmation in the sequel. As well as other unanswered questions such as "Who pulled him out of that water? Where did he spend half a year after that? Why are there new experimental militarily grade augmentations in his body never seen before installed in his body after that time? Who are the Illuminati that we have been chasing for so long?"
The problem is that the sequel, Mankind Divided, is a half game with unfinished plot. Maybe they didn't have the budget for more, or the publisher decided that they want to make two games and after reconsidered due to poor sales... Nobody knows. As there's no info about any kind of Deus Ex game in development.
If there are any significant mistakes in my huge pile of words some people with fresh memories of the game hopefully will correct me. As for any grammar mistakes or misspellings you have to forgive me, as English is my second language and it's almost 6am, while I'm typing this on my phone. I really hope that if not Hannah than someone else looking for answers with no intention of playing the game will have found them here.
I'll go back to my layer to wait for the next Deus Ex game, even though these newer games are not in the spirit of the original Deus Ex released in 2000, i still enjoy them greatly and want to know how they can unravel this mess.

I'm really interested to see your take on the Mankind Divided trailer "Aug Lives Matter" which drew a lot of criticism for being more than a little tone-deaf.
It does explain a lot though:

It is really well made. Makes me pretty emotional watching it, to be honest.
It came at a bad time, though. Many thought it was making light of the BLM protests, which I think is a fair criticism, even though I'm pretty sure Eidos Montréal didn't intend it that way.

This was in 2016, we're in 2021, and I'm just now hearing about this "lot of criticism". I recall everybody loving the trailer, which isn't named Aug Lives Matter. There was someone somewhere in some concept art of the game holding a sign that said that.

I don't think the Aug Lives Matter thing actually appeared in any of the videos. They may even have removed it from the finished game when it finally released.
Eidos doubling down and saying "our game world was around before the BLM movement" didn't help things, either. The fact that their world already existed was just deliberately missing the point. Doesn't change the fact that the phrase "Black Lives Matter" was around before "Aug Lives Matter."

In Human Revolution, you play head of security for Sariff Industries, the leading company in human augmentation (basically cybernetics and augmenting humans by melding them with machines aka transhumanism). There's a huge backlash against augmented humans for religions reasons, out of fear since they can be dangerous due to their heightened power and abilities, etc. In the sequel, the augmented humans are being rounded up and basically put into concentration camps. This makes some of them become radicalized and basically become terrorists.

So the main reason for the very close year the story is taking place is that Human Revolution and Mankind Divided are prequels to the original Deus Ex video game, which was released in the year 2000. So these two games don't really have a choice but be set before the year the original game took place in 2052.
