    Interesting to see this, looking doing this conversion but the only thing thats holding me back is the unknowns about the wiring, i take it u used a 2.5l diesel p38 bellhousing? Looking forward to the next video....

    • @KeepitBigBore
      @KeepitBigBore  Před 3 lety +2

      That’s correct in regards to the bell housing!
      The wiring is very simple, I’ll show how the loom works in the next video. Here’s the list of items you’ll need to get your engine running so if your buying a doner car, just take these parts before you scrap the car
      1) Engine, with engine loom and injector loom (these are usually bolted to the engine so if you take the engine out, these come out with it
      2) ECU, EWS, Key and the ring/circular antenna from the ignition barrel. (Make sure these are a set from the original car as the ecu, ews and key are matched from the factory and cannot be mixed and matched)
      3) ECU Loom, has a small white block with 4 or 5 fuses and a relay on it, it’s only a few wires, you’ll find it in the compartment the ecu is in.
      4) Stand-alone harness from MW Machines or Wiseman Engineering.
      5) Accelerator pedal/potentiometer. If you got an older m57 like mine, this will be a remote mounted cylindrical potentiometer unlike the newer ones which are built into the accelerator pedal. Buy the newer accelerator pedal to keep things simple. The old one can work but it involves soldering and it’s just complicated. The new type will plug straight into the stand-alone harness.
      6) Diesel filter with built in pre-supply pressure sensor (taken from doner car) there is a new and old type so make sure to get the same year as your engine loom as the plugs are different.
      8) Inline Diesel pump, also known as a Pre-Supply pump. Some people also use the in tank pump, mine is currently running without it and no issues.
      9) Inline Diesel pump relay, this is to turn the diesel pump on and off when the ignition is on. You can also wire the fuel pump to simply come on and off with the ignition but I think the relay is a nice touch as the ecu will turn the fuel pump off if the engine is not running.
      10) Ground cable. Most cars have this already but make sure it’s still there. You’ll need to install a good and thick ground cable from the engine block to the chassis, the chassis is then connected to the negative terminal of the battery. Also, on the engine loom, and stand-alone harness, there are ground cables.
      Tip: If it’s on the BMW looms and it’s brown, it’s probably a ground 👍🏽
      That’s about it! There are other things like temp gauges, radiators, inter coolers, etc but the list above is all that’s needed to get the engine running.
      I hope this helps, if it seems daunting, don’t worry, pretty much all of the above just plugs together 😬

  • @GoniacOfficial
    @GoniacOfficial Před 2 lety

    ive read and understand you need 3.5-4bar supply pressure to the hp fuel pump. Do you need to run a fuel pressure regulator or just hook up a pump straight away? What pump are you running? Awesome project and thanks for all the info and help

    • @KeepitBigBore
      @KeepitBigBore  Před 2 lety

      Hey man. There is a regulator on the back of the high pressure pump. So all you need is a 4 bar electric pump that’s capable of delivering enough volume. I used the electric (pre-supply) pump from the e39, it’s still running strong 👍🏽
      Your welcome!!! Let me know if you need anything else!

      Hi mate. You could definitely run it. I don’t know of any kits for that transmission but an easy way to do it would be to run a prop shaft directly to the rear diff and just leave it as 2wd 👍🏽

    Loving the show. I guess I am late to the party. I have a Defender 90, 1998 300TDI up here in Iceland that I am going to stick an M57 in. Also love doing the bikes. Mostly Triumph for off road. Would love some advice. I have access to a RR2006 vogue. I am not sure what M57 is installed. I can't see the bloody engine number on the left block anywhere. It has an Iron block. Was going to use an MW Machines adaptor and see what damage I can do. Any ideas on the engine variant?

    • @KeepitBigBore
      @KeepitBigBore  Před rokem

      Hi mate, Sorry for my late response. As far as I know, that engine will be the m57306d1 so it’s the same as mine. So you could also go down the route of a p38 bell housing, use the original rr transmission and make an adaptor if you can or you could find a bmw zf6-53dz HGA transmission and get yourself a great manual set up!!
      Either way, I’m nearly certain it’s a 306d1 you got 👍🏽
      Land Rover and bikes always go well together….Pure testosterone 🤣

    • @paulallen84
      @paulallen84 Před rokem

      @@KeepitBigBore Thanks mate - Yes I ran the L322 VIN through and it is a M57306D1. I have investigated a bit further and apparently the e46 M57Nd2 is also a perfect fit, using the MWMachines adaptor plate and clutch. I am pretty sold on using the standard R380 box and transfer case as this will cut down on cost and complexity. I realise that the R380 @380 nm rating might be a bit of a weak point, but I wont be thrashing the car so I think I should be OK. Same with clutch. The M57306D1 is rated at around 171hp and 390nm torque, and the M57ND2 is around 201hp and 410nm, but apparently the ND2 is a much better unit. Maybe I could derate it a bit?

    • @KeepitBigBore
      @KeepitBigBore  Před rokem

      For me personally, if I were going to stick with the r380 then I would use the p38 bell housing. The only downside is a heavier clutch pedal and a weak clutch fork shaft in the bell housing.
      It’s very easy to fit a separate and small brake servo unit to reduce the weight of the clutch pedal. Coupled with a p38 dmf and clutch clutch you’ll have yourself a 600nm capable set up. The r380 obviously still being the weak point.
      The way I like to look at the engines are 306d1, 306d2(m57n), 306d3(m57n2) etc
      The e46 330d came with both n and n2 as far as I know. The cast iron version is the m57n and has the same bell housing pattern as the 306d1.
      The only reason the m57n’s would be considered better units is for their “tuneability”.
      You can’t get any more reliable than a 306d1.
      My 306d1 is remapped to 240bhp in the e39, it now has a straight through 3” pipe, egr delete etc so it’s possibly somewhere around 250bhp and 450-500nm and my r380 is holding up just fine! I’ve pulled away from many l200’s, rangers, td5’s etc so I don’t go east on it 🤣🤣
      The p38 bell housing may even save you a little more again.
      If you use the p38 you got to buy a custom clutch.
      If you use the bmw 6 speed manual you have to buy an lt230 adaptor.
      Best thing to do is price up all your options and let prices and availability decide for you. It’s the sole reason I’m running the p38 set up 👍🏽

    Hello mate I am looking to put m57 in my nissan patrol gr y61, 5 speed manual..
    Can you help me and suggest me which m57 is the best and what parts I need for this conversion.
    Thanks

    • @KeepitBigBore
      @KeepitBigBore  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey mate. It depends on what you want to do with your patrol.
      I just wanted my defender to be able to handle motorway speeds with ease, be more efficient and be able to keep up with an average car.
      If you want the same then I’d recommend the
      M57D301 which was in the e53 x5, the early e46 330d, the e39 530d. It’s the first generation on 3.0L m57 and has a cast iron block. You can get them to 300bhp with a few mods.
      I read about a guy in Norway who got his to 440bhp with 700nm also. That is plenty for me.
      As for parts. I strongly recommend buying a complete car that’s running. You know for sure everything is there and it will probably be cheaper. Try to get a 6speed manual and you can use the BMW transmission then. It’s a strong transmission!
      After that, it’s just things like, stand-alone ecu kit, from MW Machines or Wisemans Engineering, radiators, inter oilers etc.
      Long story short, buy a complete car and you will have most of the parts needed. 👍🏽👍🏽

      Have you had this engine running before, do you know for sure if there are any other issues with the engine?
