- For the first time, we document the build of Adam's spacesuits in its entirety! Inspired by a next-generation xEMU design, Adam and his collaborators spent months building two spacesuit costumes worn in our short film "The Beacon"--celebrating the relaunch of the gaming network G4. To kick off this multi-part series, we jump back to the beginning of the summer as Adam begins the project in earnest, starting with the literal hard parts of the suit's frame and inner shell.

I love the cascade of information. Adam goes to an expert to learn how to make a suit of armour. Someone else comes to Adam to learn how to make a spacesuit. Information and expertise cascades down all the time. Love it.
man Adams enthusiasm for spacesuits makes me enthusiastic about spacesuits
30:45 seeing adam woth a bloodied knuckle makes me realize that it is basically all part of the process of making something by hand. Working with your own hands means you will undoubtedly have the marks to show for it. It was the same for me working as a carpenter for 10+ years with my father, you manage to scratch, hit or cut yourself on anything and everything, but no matter how many times it happened, every knick and dent was a memory and a proof that you had done something by yourself and that every mark is something to be proud of, no matter the circumstances around the "accident".
I love working with my hands, and seeing adam doing this build makes me wanna do a similar build just because I can 😅
Adam I worked on the design for the upper torso of the Z2 suit. Some of the reference pictures you showed are a 3D print I had made during my time at ILC. Glad to see them show up in your vid! I’m working on the xEMU suit now.
That's awesome!
Small world!
Or, whatever the astronomical equivalent of that would be...
Very cool!
That’s badass
@@FoxMacLeod2501 What a small local cluster.. just the "small" is just the matter of perspective...
A lot of people skip to the end of the videos but as a fellow engineer I really appreciate the process
"The geometry of my shorts is a little bit wrong" is not a sentence I planned to hear from Adam when I started watching this video.
For some reason it’s so nice to hear Adam swear freely
For God's sake, why hasn't NASA brought this genius man to its teams so far? It's obvious that Adam is living his boyhood dreams through this and similar projects, and that is the key to success: to do what you have always loved. My God, what a versatile and brilliant mind: with each new project I am more and more blown away!
Dude whoever is picking the music during some of the time lapse and stuff is absolutely killing it. I assume they are mostly copyright free tracks but some of them are absolute bangers
1:07:06 That look on his face of sheer pleasure, plus the shufflin' dance... quintessential Adam! I love this.
Actually I thought that was a decent rendition of the Twist (dance)!
@@peterkelley6344 Yeah, I was thinking the same: "boy, if only CZcams allowed for a clip of copywrited music, I know exactly what would fit over this!"
They probably danced like that off camera on the moon!
W•H•A•T•S•A•P~~~M•E👇👇
It's reminding me of Jesse Pinkman's clean-suit shuffle!
czcams.com/video/XjWBm1T9MHY/video.html
18:41 Like they say: "If you can't make it perfect, make it adjustable"
That’s a good quote to live by
Thats what i need to tell my boss everytime he catches me drillng 14mm holes for M10's 😂
Please Adam, do a one day build for anything from the DUNE film! Still Suit?! You already have air conditioned suit experience!!
Adams pop, lock, and drop it every time he acts out getting in and out of the suit is perfection
adam dancing to test the suit ... boy how to bring joy to my day
Adam, who once again has a deadline for a project:
"Wait - i totally forgot that one day has less than 72 hours! Damn you, treacherous one-day-builds!" 😁
My brain is still trying to come to acceptance that G4 is indeed back, but seeing Kevin Pereira and Adam Savage together talking about space stuff is activating parts of my heart I wasn't expecting 😭❤️
Much respect to all involved in this reboot and obvious shout out to Adam for continuing to be the single most awesome human being! Love you all!
The nice thing about realising you're not breaking new ground is learning that what you're trying has worked before. :)
i love seeing your whole team working together, i would love to see more of them doing their parts too.
Adam, thank you for being an inspiration to kids. I watched Mythbusters growing up, every week on Wednesday night. You and me are happy go lucky people. You got me into engineering, that was 15 years ago. It has changed my life. Thank you for being that light.
Who else randomly started watching Adam and now can’t stop watching 😂
You said the same thing on a Chris Ramsey vid.
Me! Some really awesome, totally transferable techniques in this build!
He's a Mythbuster, it was not random for me.
This is how you get to work on Matrix, Star Wars and Terminator movies. Not just his skill, but his attitude and ability to problem solve. Fascinating guy.
The shape of the suit reminds me of the mondoshawan suits from the fifth element. As always, great work!
I was thinking the same as soon as I saw the wood frame 😊👍

Mr Savage, I saw you at FanX back in September, and it's so cool to see the project you alluded to on here now! All the best to you!
I realized making these things requires patience and a lot of time. I must find my own patience and try not to be so sad towards the end of these videos! It's turning out wonderfully so far!
"Mostly they do, mostly" sneaky Aliens reference 😆
Thank you! I knew it was a reference but couldn't put my finger on it!
Thought I heard David
I LOVE that he called it an Artemis suit! I just finished up reading Andy Weir's book, and it's exactly what I thought he was using as inspiration.
I believe he was reffering to the actual Artemis program (Moon stuff) but in all honesty Adam's vision really aligns with what is described in the book.
So glad you're back to your builds, really missed this type of content from you recently.
This is going to be a great series of builds. I almost feel like if there was a ring size and count, I could "follow along at home".
Adam loves his Omegas... I'm quite surprised he doesn't have a Speedy as his daily driver.
Brilliant video!
He has a Speedy, but it seems he doesn't wear it to "work".
@@pasquale78 Cool - I guess that was inevitable! I suppose the PO is more rugged with no Hesalite to scratch. Has he worn the Speedy on camera before? I'm sure I've seen Adam wear an SMP 300 Chrono on some of the early Tested vids.
@@Valisk Yeah, I've seen him wear it. I dunno which video, but if I run in to it I'll let you know.
Is it me, or is there a spirit of old sci-fi in these style of suits? It feels like just the HUT/briefs frame is super close to the frame you'd make for a Lost In Space robot cosplay. Love it!
We definitely had Robby the Robot vibes at the start of this build.
Fantastic build. Culmination of many skills. Love the sound the sleeve bearing makes!
It is nice to see someone still have the excitement for it all. Life took that away from me years ago.
Yay! More One-Day Builds!
Very impressive stuff as always. Really loving these longer videos
Two of my favorite people on television together on youtube!! So great!!
Love seeing Adam sketch! Wish we could see more of the conceptualizing process.
I am so incredibly excited for this. I have always dreamed of building a space suit and never had any idea of how or where to start. These aren't going into great detail on the "How To" part but it is helping me so much by just seeing ideas and what goes into it. I love it and I can't wait for the next videos!!
The return of G4 makes me indescribably happy
I am absolutely gobsmacked by this build! Incredible work Adam and Team! The forms and construction are gorgeous, there really is incredible beauty in the simplicity of the circular forms with spandex skin. Can't wait to see more!
Love the long-form walk through of design process and iteration.
That part at then end after Adam gets the bottom attached to the top and he start doing the twist, I'm dying!!! Best thing I have seen all week!
Imagine being the camera guy and having to stay quiet the entire time. I'd be asking a million questions.
been wishing for this kind of long run build for a long time.
looking great Adam :)
Great job on DJ Catastrophic's space suit, looking forward to part 2!
Great, this one is going to show once again, what kind of a master you are.
I saved this so i could watch it after exams. No regrets. Good reward.
Can not wait to see the progression of this project!! It is going to be epic!!
Some people may just look at Adam like an engineer, but to me he's an artist as well.
I love that at 9:25 Adam uses his arm tattoo to double check the size of the lazy susan. Just brilliant. Now I want that tattoo even more than I did before.
Stretching the spandex over the plywood form, stiffening it with epoxy, and then laying up some fiberglass on it is such a brilliant construction method. If I hadn't seen this video, I would be at a loss as to how to accomplish a shape like that with a reasonable degree of labor! Freakin' brilliant, Adam! 🤩
55:19 appreciating adam's great mimic show
You are a brilliant mad scientist. Always fun seeing your projects come to fruition. Thanks for your creative mind.
G4 !!!!!! Bro the nostalgia...
I think seeing Adam work with a team has shown us more about his process on a prop, than when when we have seen him work on something just on his own.
Epic spacesuit indeed!! Cant wait for the finished project!! Gonna continue watchin right now!!!
Absolutely amazing build! Looks so complete you could add a few o-ring seals and step out on Mare Serenetatis . Funny thing was that as I was watching, I kept flashing back to 1958 and me at age 12 devouring Heinlein’s “Have Spacesuit, Will Travel.” Before getting to the UFOs and aliens, the first quarter of the book covers all of the challenges of building/refurbishing what Adam calls an anthropomorphic spaceship. Deja Vu!
the giant dancing space tic-tac looks nice :D
It would be really neat to see a cost break down of the suits. You know materials, labour and so on. I know it won't happen, but I can dream.
here from G4 relaunch and your interview with Kevin! Just like G4 is many gamer's childhood, you adam are mine! Grew up watching mythbusters and I nearly cried watching your interview with G4!
hello everybody, first of all, thank you Adam and the whole Tested team for amazing work. There is so much inspiration for projects in your videos. I already tried to duplicate few of your project (with my own tweaks) and I am absolutely tempted to try to build this on my own also. I just want to ask the community, if anyone else tried it also? I would just love to have somebody to consult tr to share the progress. Thank you very much.
“It looks like shot until it looks perfect” 😂 that actually made me lol
As always, great build video. Also a shout-out to the editing and music in this one - nicely done.
I can’t wait for these space suits to be completed. I love this CZcams channel
Adam knows his materials so well very important for being a good craftsman!
Kevin and Adam nerding out .. I needed this
Looking amazing… loving this build and the whole concept
I’ve missed the build videos.. looooved this so much!! ❤️
So much more to come!!!!!
This reminds me of the velociraptor build. Regarding the weight reduction. And the fabric over the wooden structure.
Really enjoying seeing the whole process. Awesome work
Inspiring work! Makes me want to build spacesuits for me and my kids. So many great techniques showcased in one video. Can’t wait to see the final product.
Here is the final product! czcams.com/video/SswGAImAlls/video.html
@@tested hi
Really good episode and project! Looking forward to the next parts!
Looked fantastic behind the DJ booth!
OK. I'm currently working on my own nasa inspired suit, but watching this I'm thinking I need to stop. The level of detail here is frickin amazing. 😳
The wait for part 2 is agonizing...need it ...NOW! :)
Next Wednesday, 7 am PT!!!
@@tested Nice! 🤩
One of my favorite books is "Have Spacesuit will travel."
You’re amazing! Okay now I’ll watch the video 🤪❤️
Also, totally loving this build! Awesome!
You doing the friggin' twist near the end of the vid...😂😂😂 Looking forward to binge-watching part two?
And, what the hell is the fabric between the torso and the breech? That stuff looks pretty rad!
So excited to see part two.
Everytime Adam uses his fabric scissors I can hear my mum yelling at me to NEVER USE THESE SCISSORS FOR ANYTHING ELSE!
Remember that as a child.
Thank you for the closed caption on videos you all upload. Being hearing impaired and not able to get hearing aids cc comes in handy from time to time. :)
Love it Adam. Love the thoughts behind the build. Can't wait 'til part 2 comes. Oh and great job Gunther, Norm, & Joey. Excellent filming and editing.
Thank you!

Classic one-day. Only took a few years thinking about the mechanics, but otherwise, piece of cake 😅
The Man Savage is a Master of his craft. He is the Yoda of FX. 💪😷🤟🏼
We got a genuine Adam Savage swing dance there at 32 minutes!
Kia Ora Adam! I’m a composite boatbuilder in NZ. Great job with the glassing! I still always feel like everything will fall apart, even when I’m doing things correctly.
Adam, suggestion when you're doing fiberglass work. instead of trying to brush on the resin, before it kicks... just dunk the entire piece of cloth, in the resin, before you lay it up. Then you're just using the brush to smooth it out. It goes a LOT quicker that way, and you don't have to worry about dry patches. Just, wear gloves! ...since you're handling saturated cloth. Hopefully this helps with your next fiberglass project. Keep up the great content, I always look forward to your next project!
I love the beginning being mostly problem-solving. Just trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t.
I really enjoyed this ... probably more than I should have!!
That dance in the suit is killing me 🤣🤣
Oh let’s twist again, like we did last summer!
The fun thing about fiberglass resin and spandex is that you can make such complex shapes that you would swear you vacuuformed something. Once you get the shape you want, just slap some glass on top with more resin and you now have a structural form. It's a favorite in the custom sound system community as well as custom car panels.
A thought about the Infil/Exfil waist flange, perhaps it could be further utilized for a modular waist attachment system for things like tool belts or control systems? Since it's already sort of weight bearing, it seems like a perfect place to hang things from.
Upvote before watching because it's Adam Savage.
I am happy to be learning the issues with using fiberglass for this type of project. I like the idea of using spandex to get the curves to the form. Maybe putting a couple of layers of paper/cloth maché over the spandex to create a puck, then vacuforming over that to make the shell would work. I'll have to give it a try on one of my projects, one of these days.
Pure flippin awesomeness 👍🏼💥👊🏻
WOW! Thats gonna be a awesome spacesuit!
Fabulous. Can't wait for subsequent parts. Ya know, buds-- I think the background of The Cave needs purposeless blinking lights. A la Jupiter II. Yeah, I know... just 'cause...
This build was an absolute blast, to watch. It turned out fantastic! And I learned a lot from it too. But I'm curious, is there footage of ALL of the fabric patterns being cut, sewn and attached onto the suit?
The high of "holy crap I made a THING" will never get old. I often suck at getting far enough into a project to feel it, but when I do, I have zero qualms about being exhaustingly annoyingly excited in my own success.
