  • Among Adam's armor collection is another suit made by master armorer Terry English for the film Excalibur: one made for the villain Mordred's lead lieutenant. But this armor is missing key pieces from its ensemble, and Adam recalls his training from Terry to rebuild those parts and chemically darkens those parts with Aluminum Black to match the original armor.

    I do have to say, I like the storytelling of Adam filming himself better than being followed by a cameraman trying desperately to keep up with him as he flits from machine to machine. Not sure how Adam feels about having to worry about getting his actions in frame and pressing record, but it feels more personal when it's shot this way.

      Agreed, I think they have landed on a much better format. I do think they should get a camera operator back in, but they should maintain this format. Cover the majority of your scene in a lock off wide - Adam’s videos have always been more about riding along with him as opposed to a more “follow along” DIY style, and the wide tells that story better. Adam is also a funny guy bursting with personality and the ‘ole showbiz saying applies to him greatly: “Comedy lives in the wide shot.”
      A camera operator could be getting some close up cutaways to be sprinkled here and there as needed as well as just making sure the camera is rolling - as a Maker I’d give Adam a solid “A,” but as a camera operator, the trade I do professionally, where a huge part of your job is simply rolling the camera, ESPECIALLY when auto functionality is doing focus and exposure for you, I’d give him about a “C.” Let’s get that grade up a bit, boss man:)

    Great build Adam! One note is that it sounds like you rinsed your aluminum parts in the sink after blacking -- in the future, please do NOT dump gun black down the drain.
    Selenious acid is not only highly corrosive and will release lead and copper from the pipes, but is considered an EPA priority pollutant as it is toxic to aquatic life.
    To properly dispose of it, I would collect any used aluminum black, including liquid used to rinse it, neutralize it with baking soda (a few spoonfuls should do), then storing it in a container for future transport to a local household hazardous waste collection facility (they can be found all over the country) along any other containers of used solvents. In San Francisco, there it one called recology which handles solvents.
    Sorry for the long post! Waste disposal is never fun, but I feel that an important aspect of making is ensuring that our creations produce as great a net good as possible.

    • @Stalport
      @Stalport Před 3 lety +1

      Dumb question, but if it is neutralized with baking soda, why does it then need to go to hazardous treatment? Is it just in case it isn't all neutralized?

    • @mitchellkleckner5203
      @mitchellkleckner5203 Před 3 lety +4

      @@Stalport Not a dumb question at all! Selenious acid is a form of the element selenium, which -- while necessary for human and animal life -- is toxic in high quantities. Further, when neutralized, selenious acid does not form elemental selenium. Instead it makes different compounds which can interact with other chemicals in the environment to create carcinogens and other harmful chemicals. I will say though, I only did some cursory research into all of this, although my background is environmental engineering and this seems to line up with what I know of hazardous waste treatment. So, if anyone has any information which contradicts or elaborates on what I said, I would love to hear it!

    Hi Adam, Love the channel you have going here. I know I have responded to some things in the past and will likely keep doing so in the future. I would like to just give a word of warning regarding using the stake in the hardie hole on the anvil. With the stake having a tapered base driving into the hardie it can cause 2 major issues. The first is you can wedge the stake in and not be able t remove it. The worse issue is, especially on older anvils, It can cause a fracture and split it off from the hardie and back. You can get small stake holders, designed to be bolted ontop of a bench, or a dishing stump. Or if you get a hold of one, a pexto plate (any of the types of them) have a coresponding tapered hole for the stakes. And are designed to take that abuse. I do blacksmith work and silversmith so I have both types of tools in my shop too. Sorry for the wall of text.

      Adam will continue to mostly film himself, but we will continue to film a couple of builds a month. When we film Adam, he can focus better on what he's doing, which he likes, and it's also a lot easier to edit. Plus, we all get renewed energy being together in person. But not to worry, we always planned that Adam would largely continue to film himself and that hasn't changed.

      It's not about forgetting to hit record or quality, the point of these videos is to show the thing that is being done, and I'll take slight missing bits and good but not amazing quality over camera movement so constant it's faster than the autofocus can cope with, or using such fast glass that the focus plane is paper thin. I want to see what he's doing, fancy camera movements and DOF be damned. But I know it's two sides of a difficult balance.

    When I did the shoulders on my SCA armor I used 2 mm steel. That took more brute force than a plastic hammer let me tell you :-) Thin aluminum looks ok but I wouldn't want to fight in it.

    I have to say I was relishing how easily you/Adam were cutting through that light gauge Aluminum. I used to cut armour out of full sheets of 12g-16g stainless with a Beverly shear. Nice cedar dishing dish?.. the bottom of gas cylinders last forever but are loud as, well, your air nippers. I appreciate your skills and your human qualities to.

    okay, okay, so I am still a little behind in my CZcams, but I swear I just about had a heart attack, when I saw "one day builds" and "henchman armor" in the same sentence. I was about ready to be flabbergasted at a whole suit of, even prop armor, in a day. So much relief when it was only a few bits of the suit. Great video by the way.

    Fabulous video, really enjoyed the build and also when you visited Terry English over here in the UK to build the King Arthur suit, I was wondering if you keep in touch with him, find out how he's been doing throughout the lockdown of last year. I hope he is well, I would love it if he just spent his time building suits of armour. As always thanks for sharing 👍😁

    I never knew they had a name, (but should have), but I've seen the rivet-holders before in movies and documentaries about aircraft manufacture, especially during World War II. In a film about, say, the North American P-51 mustang's, you will see hundreds of them on the wings and fuselages. As stated, I never before knew the name, Cleeko.
    PS, great choices of music for your time-lapse segments. A lot of it reminds me of the soundtrack to the, "Ratchet And Clank" video game series.

    Adam, you _really_ should move from armoring in Al to armoring in steel. The end result is just plain _worth_ it.
