- The past year in lockdown has yielded so many new projects for Adam and the Tested team, but the Hellboy Samaritan prop replica is the one that encapsulates all of Adam's new machining learnings and adventures. That build is finally done, and Adam lays out all its pieces for a final assembly and weathering pass to show off its authentic black oxide finish. The prop exceeded all of Adam's expectations when he embarked on it, and has sparked new ideas for more replica builds from the Hellboy universe. (Note: This video fixes an audio error from a previous upload.)

stupid question which just came to my mind, why do people still use flathead screws? Personally I try to avoid flatheads and phillips heads like Hellboy holy water ;)
I started the video, sound was way out of sync, stopped and never found it again! That explains why! Hahaha!
Reading the title i thought to myself like 'wait a minute, there's no way this can be the finale. You haven't covered the triggger mechanism. Did i miss a part of the build?'
@@TheMHoH armorer here, there's a lot of reasons.
1- they're easier to make. as Adam said, we hand fit a lot of things. you can make a custom flathead in minutes with a thread die and file. a hex, torx, or other socket head takes broach cutters.
2- they're easier to time. nothing is more satisfying then having all the heads face the same way. seriously. it's so nice.
3- we don't like change.

I think Adam tells us that he handled one of the Hero props that Guillermo has in his collection. Therefore, I submit that Guillermo has “the real thing”.

The real thing is in our minds. The prop in a cabinet is not real, it’s what was used to make the real thing in our minds. (But ya, he does have the real one).
I hope he gets to make more pieces like this for movies now that he has the skillset and maschining precision level to do it.

He has one? The first and only one i’ve seen (til now) is Joey Santore’s on CRIME PAYS BUT BOTANY DOESN’T. He has it refreshed occasionally.

You can definitely /actually/ do that. One really cool thing I've seen people do is 3d painting. In it, you spread a thin layer of resin, and let it set. Then you paint a layer of your image. Then resin, then more painting. By the time you're done, the painting is stacked and has a neat 3d appearance, and all you did was spread resin and paint.
Now that gun could certainly use some glitter glue.

He did say he wanted to try actual gunsmithing at some point.
Seeing him make one that actually fired would be amazing, not sure what licenses he need for that though
@@DarkWolfseternalfire depends on the state probably. But generally you dont need a licence to make your own guns. As long as you never sell them.

I may not have much of one, but watching Adam get giddy about Hellboy stuff is heartwarming.
no, it's annoying watching him sit there being all pedantic about something he's been planning for months. he knows every step he's going to take in this process and the material cost is peanuts to him. this is stupid drama. just shove it together damnit.

Since the projects seem to be getting bigger and obviously take longer than a day. I propose a slight shift. What is they were just projects Adam always told himself he'd get around to "one day". Less of a time crunch list and more of a dream projects list. Regardless, keep up the great builds!

As a Marine Engineer myself i really appreciate your commitment for this build. Absolutely an amazing result! I know how much time and effort it takes to get through all the steps in a build like this. Absolutely amazing build Adam. I hope that I someday can afford a workshop like yours. I made a drill vice with many of the same techniques you used in this build. Thanks for inspiring me!

I was wondering that as well. Skipping back in the video they suddenly appear after a cut at 19:21 . Replaced by other "these guys" screws ? That or rejected replacements for them ?

Is it just me or did he skip a vid about the trigger and laser? Couple episodes back he mentioned they were done, but I can't find a video about those parts of the build.
And in true prop maker fashion... Spends hours and hours to build something perfect but wastes no time smashing it with hammers right after admiring how well you built it lol

One of the things I love most about Adam is that he's a joyfully unapologetic nerd. It's refreshing and contagious.

Been waiting for this final video for a while, and it was so satisfying to watch. What a work of art Adam! I can't imagine the feeling of satisfaction of holding that "gun shaped object" after all the blood, sweat, tears, and joy that went in to making it. Congratulations!
I know absolutely nothing about doing this kind of thing, but I still love watching this because that enthusiasm and passion and excitement is just so contagious

Hey, just wanted to thank you for sharing this with everyone; Awhile ago, I built my own 3d Printer with sights set specifically on this handgun, as I feel drawn to it for some reason, but shortly after I met with some serious medical issues, and since then, my printer is simply not in a working state anymore and I worry about my ability to return to it as I once did. You sharing this journey has made it easier to deal with, so thanks again, really. You're a real artist.
Personally, this is by far my favorite of your ODBs since quarantine. This'll be the one people come back to 5 and 10 years from now. Especially to hear the spinning cylinder ASMR.
The next time Adam visits Weta, I fully expect to see an article in the news of him being arrested for trying to sneak this hand canon into New Zealand.
that final bit of the build when it's all coming is always a fantastic feeling. i got into saber crafting after my dad died it kept me going when i didn't feel like it. my dad was builder so when i got back into saber crafting recently it kinda makes me feel closer to my dad since he built things, those are some of the best memories i have of him and i know he would be right here with building a lightsaber if he could.
This is an incredible example of engineering and machining prowess, Adam. Truly a museum-quality replica that you should be exceptionally proud of.
As an aside, I can only imagine your reaction the first time you spun that cylinder with the magnet in place and discovered the effect it produced. I would have been giggling uncontrollably at the sheer amount of "cool factor" that adds to the build. Freaking amazing, man!
I appreciate a blued piece so much more than a parkerized piece. The feel and look of the piece is so much better
Parkerization can take several forms and can be sorted into two broad types: zinc and manganese processes. "Parkerization" is just a trade name for a phosphate finish. I have rifles that have been parked, and on some of them, it is olive green. One in paricular is olive green now but originally was flat gray when I got it, freshly re-finished. On others, it is black and slick, so much so you'd swear it was blued.
Adam: "Hand made screws!"

There is a class of gunsmiths that do use hammers and sand paper to weather guns and it's the realistic, aged replica groups (Italy, .. europe in general). Those are high pieced pieces, that look 100 yo, but they're, what 3 years (don't quote me on it, but i think that's the waiting line for one).

I can whole heartedly understand the feelings you had, as I just finished a 30 year journey to build a replica of KITT from Knight Rider. My build almost broke me mentally and emotionally. Congratulations on the accomplishment, and persistence to learning new things and honing your craft Mr. Savage.

I know I'm late to the party, but this was a great video. In the words of my late grandfather, the pessimist sees the glass half empty and the optimist sees the glass half full, but the engineer wonders why the glass is twice as big as it needs to be. The look on your face shows a glass perfectly sized and it was AMAZING watching this build. Thanks for taking us all on the journey with you!

I suspect that Adam would have to give it the price of a car, in order to be properly compensated for his time.
I would to see someone with manufacturing experience take this prototype and turn it into something that could be created as a short-run prop replica. It might still be as expensive as a car, but it might be a rather less expensive car.
Volpin props did an amazing Samaritan kit recently with this level of complexity, had a couple limited runs and they might do another eventually. Super high quality resin casts.

How many people felt the hit of the hammer as Adam weathered the gun? Even knowing what Adam was doing.
Fearing the wrong hit would make a mark not wanted or worse, breaking something like the laser lense. Even knowing that the likelihood was slim...

Well I guess the trick with weathering is that there are no unwanted marks; that would make the weathering non-random, and thus, usually less convincing. We are just too good at spotting a plan in something. Sure, one might want to make sure not to structurally damage the piece, but how would you do such damage on a fully metal/hardwood piece. Relax, and weather 😊
I thought the best part about this video came at 2:30, as you described perfectly why the stuff I make often takes much longer and often costs me more (sometimes way more) than I originally budget for. When people tell me I should "go into business" selling the things I make, I have to tell them I wouldn't only go broke, I would starve. Congratulations on a very rewarding build Adam.
I have to say that your enthusiasm for the things you enjoy is contagious. Also in the past year or so of religiously watching your videos I’ve found myself not only focusing on the function of the things I make and purchase, but also the “feel and experience”. If you watch enough of his videos, you'll occasionally get a glimpse of the rest of the 'workshop' which is a cross between an absolutely awesome showroom and a hoarder's treasure chest. I don't think he's that keen on showing off his toys, but I could be wrong. Ask him - he may do a 'tour' vid for you if enough people ask :)

@@basosz It's still there - though I forget where, there's a specific manhole cover or something, can probably find by googling - but it's something like seven years out of date.
Either home, the Cave (this shop) or various storage volumes (that's he's been downsizing). The Cave has a loft, which is garnished with various things. If you google "savage+cave" you'll find a 7 or so year old rendition of his shop in Google maps.
I love guns with geometric barrels, the Samaritan and Corvo’s upgraded pistol from the first dishonored game are just ‘chefs kiss’

Huh, that is interesting. Apparently here in Canada we typically call all those type of wire connectors Marrettes, which is actually the name of the inventor - kind of like saying Kleenex instead of facial tissue. And the reason I mention it is because the first time Adam mentioned using a wire lug, I didn't actually know what it was until I saw it. LOL
Or Xerox for copier machines (or the process itself). :)

I have to say I love watching Adam work on projects. Its truly a relaxing and enjoyable experience to me. I'm not a maker but I love watching and knowing how things work, how they go together, and how they are generally made. I feel like I understand something so much better once I know how all the parts work together and make things work.
Also, Adam would make one hell of a gun smith. So if he ever stopped being a maker he could quite literally fall back on his maker skills to make guns... just saying this thing looks so real I dont think he's that far off from making the real deal.

Goodness its wonderful to see Adam so happy and filled with pride for a job well done. The Samaratin he has created is amazing, but the expression of joy he shares with us is something even more special. The prop is a special thing, but Adam's happiness is something special. It's an odd thing to feel, considering that I only know him through Television and youtube, but I'm proud of Adam...

I can’t begin to comprehend Adam’s depth of feeling at this accomplishment. To take something so beautifully complex from “I wonder if?” to completion as a better than the inspiration piece must be incredibly satisfying.
One thing I had wondered about since seeing the movie way back when, was why they chose a Webley style break open design. While it’s satisfactory for low to medium power cartridges, I never heard of one using large, high power rounds. The only logical answer I could come up with was ease of manipulation while in costume. Even that reasoning has some flaws. But when you’ve been shooting for 50 years you start to wonder about these sorts of things. 🤷♂️

I worked in a custom revolver shop for a couple years and built quite a few full custom revolvers, this thing is slick. Very nice work Adam 👌 I could never smack it with a hammer! That's some dedication to the aesthetic. All that pretty machine work and finish, I cried a little.
