The HOKA Cielo X1 is a LOT of carbon fiber race-ready goodness at a price tag to match. With all the hype and promotion of this shoe, I expected INCREDIBLE things, but what I got was a bit lackluster. What are YOUR thoughts?

I love these shoes. I'm a (barely) sub 2-hour half marathon runner (200 pounds, 49 years old) and I love these shoes to train in. I race in the Rocket X2 and for me, these are the perfect trainer to go along with them. I don't care much about their weight (as heavy as I am) and they feel great at my pace. More structure than the X2 and almost as fast. For me, they're perfect.
I had the opposite experience. I'm also a middle-pack, heavier runner and I feel like this shoe was designed exactly for runners like us. The last word I would ever use to describe the Cielo X1 is "meh." It's super fun to run in. The combination of the foams, plate, and geometry really launch you down the road. However, I do agree that the upper material is not as breathable as it could be. Also, the laces are questionable at best and MUST be double-knotted. But I find they stay locked in extremely well. Otherwise, it may just come down to your stride. For me, the Cielo X1 currently stands as my favorite running shoe of all time. It's more like the New Balance SC Trainer or the Adidas Prime X - that can also do racing - than a pure racer. To each their own.
Finally, a realistic review, specially taking into account middle-of-the-pack runner like me who's not into PBs in race. Thanks for "keeping it real".
Appreciate the honest review. I’m a mid-pack runner and I love these shoes. They are so much fun to run in; the most fun I have had in a shoe in a long time. They are bouncy and propulsive which make me faster, but there are certainly other race shoes out there that would make me faster, but these are just so much fun to run in I prefer these.
is this comfortable for someone with knee issues like arthritis? I have bought my first hoka skyward x and love it for base training so far, so easy for my knees.
Hoka clifton 9, 229 grams.
Cielo, 280.
OK
I appreciate your detail and always honest reviews.
I appreciate your truthfulness.
Your color grading here is beautiful, props! This is the first video I've seen where these don't look like a Lisa Frank notebook.
I absolutely love this shoe - so much fun to run in! The bounce is insane and the rocker just keeps you moving. Nothing but good things to say about it.
Good to have varied opinions. Thomas from Believe in the Run has said after 100 miles it could be one of his shoes of the year, as a mid packer. Great review
Absolutely love the unfiltered and real take on these shoes. It was super clear that Hoka was going hard on the marketing front for these and I really appreciate a review like this that helps cut through that noise and get a clear picture. Great work!!
Except the review isn’t great, misses that these are, fast shoes, with good stability due to the winged plate, they are durable and comfortable. Yes they are expensive, but they are definitely not “Meh” . They are my Marathon shoe for London, and I have picked them above several racing shoes like the AF1 and 3. No be put off by this misguided review, these are incredibly good shoes and really fun to race in. One last thing, the laces provide a great lockdown and the weight isn’t noticeable.
Thanks for the honest review. I’m a mid pack runner and was considering these for a Marathon in the fall. My current race shoe is the Rocket x 2 and based on your review I will probably stick with them and save a few $$
I feel like a total jackass wearing $300 shoes as a solid mid pack runner - the old guy wearing new balance 880’s is still going to smoke my a*s….
I know what you mean but I got over that and I wear whatever I feel like, in goofy colors. I don't ever pay full retail though so it makes it easier.
I love showing up to fun-runs in shoes that cost more than my first car. Just like the slow guys grinning ear-to-ear plodding along on $8k mountain bikes. We spend money on stuff that brings us joy--fun shoes bring me joy...
Story of my life
You wear what makes up happy. When I see those runners in a race it gives me motivation to pass them.
I wear what is comfortable and if others have a problem with it then that’s on them. My favourite shoe is the Adidas Adios Pro 3, a shoe that has been worn to a number of world records but as someone who runs at half the speed of those records I still find it comfortable, lightweight and responsive so why shouldn’t I wear it? Oh yeah and they’re pink(ish) so not subtle, again I have no problem with that and nor should anyone else. I bought them at just over half the original price so it was around the same price as a premium running shoe used to be anyway.
“You’re not going to be able to buy yourself lunch after your marathon.”😂😂😂😂😂
Man… that review turned ugly quick! 😂😂😂
I have to admit… I just spent $280 on running shoes. A pair of Novablast 4’s and a pair of Fuel Cell Rebel 4’s. I’d take that deal over the SeeYellows any day!
Thank you for honest account, yesterday watched Thomas believe in the run saying he likes it as a daily trainer- some of us are taken off reality- or to much freebies make some 😅
I’ve had mine for afew months they’re the perfect race shoe for me. The rocker and foam are incredible and the plate keeps me super stable. Not had an issue with the laces in fact I kind of like them. Fit is bang on and I have some toe wiggle room on the longer runs.
I appreciate that price is a factor in your reviews because most of us are not shoe reviewers getting free shoes. And I am a back of the line runner with student loan debt so this will be a hard pass for me lol
Love the GR reviews as always!
This is currently my shoe of the year, the Cielo is what the Super comp V4 thinks it is.
I love this shoe. I raced in it. Was neat. But honestly this has become a super trainer for me 😂
Did my first half in these, a few weeks earlier I did 15k in Nike vapor fly. Prefered the Hoka over the Nikes and I am sure there are other factors but my time was better in the Hoka’s and I seemed to need less recovery time after the race. Plan on using them in an upcoming marathon over the Vapor flys and save the Nikes for shorter distances and speed work
I'm a just finish Ironman, previously ran in the Hoka Rocket X2. I was surprised with just how different these are. The cielo I found both wider and higher for the same length (size 8). It's a lot easier to get on due to that, and the gusset/tongue isn't as 'sticky' as the Rocket.
Running in it, it has a lot more stability than the Rocket. It's heavier, but you don't notice that, I think the extra energy return compensates for the extra weight.
I'll be using this at Barcelona, where some of the surface isn't flat tarmac, but I think on a pure road marathon I might choose the Rocker.
I will only run in Hoka’s trail and road. 75% of them I am excited to talk about; the others nada! I have the Tecton X and the Carbon X. (I prefer the Carbon X over the Tecton). Just looking at the shoes without wearing or running in them, I can tell it’s a solid no! Thanks for your thorough review. I was right! My two favourites are the Mafate 4 and the Mach 5; give them a go!
thank you for having the best record of this show yet.., and I think that’s because your review didn’t come out immediately after the shoe dropped.., I think you covered all the bases, including how it feels after many miles.., and if it’s truly worth it, even if you are Scrooge McDuck.. jussayin
Never been a Hoka person but I like this shoe - ran a marathon a few weeks ago with them OOTB - and the shoe just flowed....I think they are the most comfortable and accessible of the carbon shoes outside of NB - the lock down is incredible. Going wear them for a road 40 miler in May. I don't feel fast in this shoe but I do feel protected and sturdy and does not tear up the legs. The lock down is incredible and they are the most durable Hokas ever made IMO.
When you say you don’t feel fast, do you think they are not fast racing shoes. I have run a few races in these, and have recorded some relatively fast times.
@@edrios3668 they are def a fast shoe - ootb was my fastest marathon by 20 mins in 2 years on no taper -just a training run. What I mean is they are so protective they don’t feel fast like an alpha fly etc. but clearly they are fast - same with the NB elite - similar shoes to me - love them
It’s a parrot fish colorway
In Canada the price of the shoe isn't too bad tbh. It's $310 CAD which works out to about $228 USD so pretty close to the price of an endorphin pro 4 and cheaper than the Sc elite v4. Got a bit of a discount at a local shop so worked out to under $195 US - hope shoe ends up working out - seemed fun trying it in store despite the weight!
Ouch too expensive difference between the hoka clifton road?
I have a bit of knee arthritis. What shoe would you recommend that doesn’t have as much of a drop in it that has maximum cushioning? I’d be really interested to hear your opinion. I’m trying to do more distance running without pain.
What is your first choice for a marathon shoe for us mid packers? I want to buy a racer but don’t like Nike.
Try the endorphin speed. It’s a great shoe, and version 3 is on sale right now.
New Balance SuperComp Trainer v2 is a lot of fun and full of bounce. Might not last too long but a great shoe to Marathon in.
Try the Mach 6s yet?
It's an interesting shoe, but as you say... At 275 I could go Alphafly 3 or Asics Paris. But I don't think you can compare the Atreyu's with these shoes. The Artist are just meh. They don't propel me forward at all.
Im'ma get this shoe… probably 2 years from now, and only if it goes in discount.😂
Ethan have you ran in a pair of Speedland trail shoes yet?!
The best!
Why do shoe companies frequently provide sub-par laces. It's so key!
But.... did you run fast(er) on the Cielo X1?
Why is the upper not Matryx? That’s what I thought when I tested out. Very springy and fast but for the love…why are they choosing a thick knit upper?!
That Norda shade 😅
heard on another channel that these shoes make fantastic daily trainers. Not for race day.
yea i mean the people praising this shoe also went after the prime x strung 2 which is basically the same shoe and way more responsive
Also heavy and also not a racing shoe either.
Fun shoe but definitely not fast for me. Rocket 2, alpha fly, metaspeed are all 10-15 seconds per mile faster for me. Feels like the rocker in wrong spot for my stride. Comfortable and cushioned for sure but not a racer. YMMV
It is a fantastic super trainer. Not a race shoe, a super trainer, and it is indeed, super.
Wait, is it more foot-shaped than most Hokas?! Look like it might be built on a different last! Big news if true
I’m beginning to wonder if he just drags stuff. $275 is a lot, I actually bought the shoe and it offered all the vibes
If you got the 💰 go for it. Enjoy the shoe you run in. It's a shame nike has so much power they can set the price and every company follows. And those high price shoes cause all the shoes at lower prices to climb because it's still cheaper than 275. I know these shoes help the channel with views, i just wish there was more hype on cheaper shoes.
Tempting but the price makes a hard no. :)
Needs more shell toe. Fat laces.
My limit for a pair of new shoes is around $130. Anything over that is just a waste for this mid-packer!
Totally agree. Way tooooooooooooooooo expensive
I was on the Hoka train back 10 years ago, but I can’t stand them anymore. The only road shoe that was decent, in my opinion, was their first iteration of the Clifton. Then they butchered it and made it into something completely different than it originally was. Speedgoat used to be my go to trail runner. Aesthetics are the least concern for me when deciding on a shoe, but there pull tab heel repulses me. Most of them these days look like elf shoes. I’m done with this company.
ok no one cares
Most not all elite runners do not really need these “elite” running shoes. It’s mostly to promote the product and sell it as a “running shoe “. These are for those of us who have medical issues or worn down joints. Just saying. Thanks for the info.
Ok...good opening and attention gainer...currently listening...let's do this 😎🤙...SD Chargers ish with a SEA twist 😁
There should be context on the reason someone would use a certain shoe.
so yea I don't care how good or not good they are...at that price they are just not an option...
At that price they better sprout wings.
Too much hype? Maybe. Too much price? Definitely.
That these shoes are worse than the brand Atreyu, fits well with my impression as well.
Mid pack marathon runners should just buy the Endorphin Speed 4 for at least $100 less...
Not falling for anymore Hoka hype. I’ve tried a bunch and don’t like any of them. Just not fun to run in. Plenty of other shoes out there that make you feel faster.
no way im paying more than 150 for running shoes and for that reason..im out!
First yo word homie g g what what gangsta
Hoka getting narrower and narrower is such a disappointment.
but the shape looks improved
That's one of many reasons why I switched to Altra. Although I'll keep Hoka in rotation.
They are not narrow, quite spacious in the toe-box actually
@@edrios3668 Compared to other Hoka or other brands. GR said they’re narrow, other reviewers said they’re narrow.
@@BassTonix - definitely not narrow, quite spacious, lots of reviews have said this, but don’t take my word for it try a pair on.
Major disappointment for me. The tongue is just plain dumb. Five miles in and developed a huge blister on my left Achilles. Boxed them up and returned the following day.
This is a $199.99 shoe 😮💨
"Promo SM" 🙄
Definitely too much hype. I didn't buy it. Literally the heaviest legal stack so-called supershoe. There are better options at lower price points or some other models are available even cheaper at sale. The new Endorphin Pro 4 is still $225. The older version Pro 3 is now available around $160-170. More or less they will do and perform about the same for mid-pack runners.
Way too much money,, to your point, lots of other choices out there
