For the question about the noisy 1st gear in a 4l80e.. What you're hearing is worn planetaries which are located in the rear of the trans and is the first thing you put into the case when building the trans. It's common for TH400's and 4L80e's to have this noise. In fact TH400's in dump trucks (called TH425 I believe), came with straight cut gears that make a lot more noise than normal but I'm unsure of there is a similar offering for the 4l80e. When the noise is from wear, I've always assumed that it was because these transmissions last so long that the ones we see that we rebuild simply have more wear than the other transmissions you may have the need to be rebuilt.

The whine in first could be a straight cut planetary. I had a noisy 4l80 and when we rebuilt it, it had straight cut gears.
