My daughter and I were just out picking Saskatoons at my parent’s farm. Saskatoons are so delicious and great fresh and cooked. You have a nice selection in your orchard.
thank you, we planted most of the orchard 15 years ago and have been reaping the rewards ever since. I think we live close to you, brian grew up in stoon and I grew up in regina, nice to meet a fellow s'tonian
You put way more effort into sorting than I do. Also they break apart easily so I just wash them and put them straight into a bag for freezing. I’ve never had issues getting a scoop out when needed.
Well that was an education! I'm not familiar with saskatoons and chokecherry but there's one think that I am familiar with, which is quite universal i guess... I too have to eat while I'm harvesting as was the case with our pea harvest...most of them made it to the kitchen I think! Best wishes to you both.
Have you ever had a fungus on your Saskatoon berry bushes? I hear it can be caused by a June that is too wet. Our friends have a farm of Saskatoon berries and they've lost their whole crop to fungus several times. We bought some berries from The Berry Barn and they tasted average. They were missing that special zing that we enjoy on the tongue. We love the zing. Hard to describe. I would love to own an orchard some day.
Hi Marcell , agreed with the flavour ! we have found excess moisture is a big problem with these berries, the trees prefer to grow on sandy soil so there is lots of drainage , our berries have just gone crazy with huge production since we got our honey bees .. we have so many berries we have started asking families around us to pick because our freezer is already full.
Great orchard! I can’t wait to get ours started
its totally worth it . make sure you put out a video of what you plant , we would like to see it.

cool ! I will try that tomorrow , still lots to pick at our farm and in these very strange times we live a much needed fruit source over the winter.
You have a lovely orchard. Nice and interesting to see different kinds of fruit trees from different countries.
Thank you for your kind words! growing your own food always tastes better !
