  • I recently had to carry out an overhaul of my Volkswagen Golf MK5 bonnet lock. My car is due for an MOT shortly and the bonnet lock was showing signs of failure as it was becoming extremely hard to open and very sticky. It almost felt like you had to pull the lever so hard you wanted to snap the cable before the bonnet released.
I didn't want to leave this problem, because eventually the cable would snap and the repair would be even more difficult.
I decided to write an article and upload a video focussing on some key points relating to the procedure which may help others in this situation
You also need to repair a bonnet lock, because it causes the same problems in reverse, the bonnet is hard to shut and you have to slam it so it shuts on the car. A faulty bonnet lock can also disable your windscreen wipers and alarm
There are ways to open the bonnet lock when your cable snaps, but I won't disclose them on this site. I will post them on my website articles
You can read the two articles I wrote below:

Thank you! This solved my problem. My hood/bonnet would not close properly. I removed the latch, cleaned it and lubed it following your instructions, and now the latch works like new again. thanks!

Why change something that makes them money. The locks themselves are good. I think its pr9bably just a poor design on location why the seize up. I imagine due to the grills

thanks for the video. very informative! I wanted to know how you wired up the bonnet sensor? the sensor has come off the loom and is still on the lock in your video. did you solder it all on again?

Hiya, which part do you mean. In the video here the sensor itself is broken it snapped on mine and Ihad to get a new lock. This was the old lock Iwanted to refurbish.
The sensor itself is attached to the lock maybe via a clip it should be the sensor then the wires with the connector. Could you be more specific to the problem? Is it the connector at the end of the loom which has snapped off, or the sensor itself ?
