How To Find a GPS Tracker on Your Vehicle

  • You will find many articles online on how to find a GPS Tracker in your car. I find it amusing that most of them have as their last step to get a professional to find it for you.
    Do Not buy a cheap Bug Detector to find a tracker. They do not work. In this day and age all trackers have movement sensors inside and do Not emit a signal while being parked, and it is impossible for one person to sweep a vehicle with a detector while moving of course. Movement sensors usually kick in around 11 MPH so just shaking the vehicle does not work anymore. Read these words carefully. “ IF you are sweeping your vehicle with a gps detector while it’s parked you’re wasting your time.”
    Most trackers only transmit or update to a website every 2 minutes or less to save on battery life. So if you’re trying to scan for it, even while in motion; you may not get a reading unless you held your RF/GSM Detector in every area for more than 2 minutes at a time. Believe me, No one is that thorough.
    You might as well have a Spy Geek help you. People who try finding trackers themselves often get more frustrated and spend more money than if they would have just called us to begin with.
    You must have a trained Spy Geek do a physical inspection with the car parked first. Then a rolling RF/GSM/GPS Sweep second. This is the only way my friends..
    The physical inspection can take a while depending on how many accessible areas someone could hide a GPS/Bug in your particular vehicle; and whether or not that suspect has inside access. Remember whoever may be tracking you has to retrieve this device to either charge it or remove it after done with it. So it’s not going to be in an inaccessible area. Many times a Tracker can be found just by laying down with a flash light in your garage and looking underneath your vehicle for anything in a small black magnetic box. It will not look like part of the vehicle on the outside. Now inside the vehicle the most common areas to place a GPS Tracker is into the OBD Port under the driver’s side dash, usually near your fuse box. Just google your make and model of vehicle and “OBD Port” there will be a diagram where yours is. Having physical access to your car means your stalker could have wired a tracker to the battery under your hood. Being the oldest method and unlikely. However doing a good car sweep should also include checking for any non-stock wires connected to your vehicles 12 volt battery leading to the tracker itself.
    Hint: The reason the Physical Inspection is so important. Many Passive GPS Trackers (Like the little Hockey Puck one at the start of the video) never emit any signal that can be measured by a RF Detector.
    The Little Black Square Vehicle Tracker we sell in the video can be hypothetically placed anywhere inside with Velcro under your dash and be quite hard to find to the untrained eye. With limited access the person tracking you will have to magnetically place their tracker on the outside of your vehicle within arm’s reach, to be sure they can retrieve it to charge the battery. So limiting who has physical access to your vehicle will make it easier to find a tracker on the outside. It’s checking every nook and cranny on the inside on your vehicle that takes the most time.
    It would be wise to remember that all GPS needs a way to get a signal to the satellite or cell phone tower. So it will not work in places where you lose all your signal strength on your own cell phone.
    Example: Under your car seat is a big metal plate that usually blocks most GPS signals. The easiest way to tell where a tracker will Not be is just slowly scan around your car with your cell phone looking at your signal strength bar and when it fades to nothing, Stop and note that a tracker will not work here. Then scan around more until you find all the dead zones in your vehicle. By process of elimination you will now know all the areas in your car that a tracker will never work. From my personal experience I find most trackers somewhere deep hidden underneath the dash area; either attached by double stick tape or Velcro. Again while down there check your OBD Port. All these areas near and around the front dash board of any vehicle GPS/Cell phone signals always work.
    Then underneath any vehicle GPS signals can bounce off the pavement to reach the sky. Be diligent about checking all these areas first in your Car Sweep for GPS Trackers.
    If you do everything stated above you will be doing as good as us in checking your vehicle for any surreptitious GPS or Bugging devices. Now if you find something. Do Not Touch it. Get gloves and take photos of it then call the police or a trusted private investigator for removal so they can take prints off of it.

    Thanks Bob, you saved me money, I was getting ready to purchase a bug detector but didn't know of they were reliable or not

    • @spygeeks1
      @spygeeks1  Před 3 lety +8

      You're very welcome Mochaluv. Please remember, you have to be within 6 inches of a transmitting tracker to be able to pick up on it. If you're within 6 inches; you can see it. The physical inspection is always the most important way to check for trackers. Also remember for a GPS Tracker to be transmitting, it has to be going over 11 MPH. If you can figure out how to get within 6 inches of the front and back bumper while the vehicle is in motion. Please share this with the me and the world! Yes it would take a stunt person to do that. Even if someone was able to achieve all that. The vehicle would still have to be driven down a country road to get away from all the RF interference around us all the time. The way you know you're far enough away out in the country to get a good reading on your detector. Look at your WiFi list on your smartphone. See all the stuff that shows on that list? You have to get far enough away to where nothing shows up on that list. These are the things that would give you false readings on your Bug Detector. So it's not just making sure the vehicle is in motion while doing your GPS Sweep. You have to get away from all the interference. Somewhere far down a country road. It will still take 2 people to do a sweep like this. One person driving, and the other reaching everywhere they can get inside to see if they can get within 6 inches of the transmitting GPS Tracker. Be sure to have your cell phones in Airplane Mode so they don't set off your Detector too.
      If you take all these steps for accurate GPS Tracker Detection on a vehicle, you will see how it's almost impossible for the normal person to do all this. So we're back to the physical inspection. Just type in google "GPS Tracker" then click the Images button below the search. Go 3 or 4 pages in and see what all the trackers look like. Whoever put this in your vehicle can only reach as long as their arm will let them. Then search everywhere you can reach in your vehicle too with a flashlight looking for anything you saw in those google images. If you find something. Wear gloves before touching it, and have police come take prints on it and research the IMEI number to maybe find out who's paying for the service. All real time GPS Trackers have a monthly fee.
      To answer your question. Bug Detectors are only reliable when used correctly. There are Detectors that will give much farther range on Trackers than 6 inches. However most of us cannot afford $47, 000 for the Oscor Blue Spectrum Analyzer. Feel free to buy one and donate it to me. ;)

    If we really want to stop this problem, mandate a 20 year jail term without parole on a first offense. Also, make it legal for a car owner to use any amount of physical violence they wish against any individual they catch attempting to place a tracker without a court issued warrant to do so. That should stop most illicit GPS tracking.

    The trackers seem to rely on receiving gps/glonass/galileo/bds satelllites and determining the location. The location is either stored in a passive device or re-transmitted via radio for a real-time active tracking.
    How does the tracker receive a good signal under the car? Doesn't it need a good line of sight to the satellite?
    If you discover one of these things under your car, do you remove the tracking device and stash it somewhere (like on the mailman's or garbage truck), or can you wrap it in foil (to prevent satellite reception) and un-wrapping it when you are done with your secret mission, os simply throwing it away. I've heard that law enforcement gets really pissed off when their devices are discovered and removed.

    • @spygeeks1
      @spygeeks1  Před 7 lety +4

      If your phone was underneath your car it would still get location services would it not? I know mine will. This must be how satellites pick up without line of sight. Just assuming. Law enforcement has to have a court order to put a tracker on your car. So it is not happening as much as you think. It's mainly domestic issues. In the description click Show More and you will see what I say to do after you find a Tracker and what to do with it. Your idea works too, however you may not catch the person if you just throw it away.

    • @milofonbil
      @milofonbil Před 7 lety +4

      OK ... I agree that if I was underneath the car and wanting to make a cellphone call, that you could probably connect to the nearest cell tower, at most a mile or two away.
      However, GPS satellites are in a 12,550-mile orbit. The signal from them is really weak. I would think that having a whole metal car between the GPS receiver and the satellite could make the reception a bit challenging. Maybe these under the car devices depend on a reflection from the ground.
      Hmmmm. Park your car in the garage and arrange some other transportation. This forces them to put their gumshoes on the ground and to be seen.
      Agree. Law enforcement has to have a court order. Private investigators just invade your privacy and don't give a rats. It would be nice to know who you are up against.
      Yes, you have a point there. The device needs to be there when the person that planted it comes back for it. However, it does not need to report the facts. It would be nice to be able to erase a passive device or to download fake data to it. Also, it would be interesting to hinder an active device from reaching the cell tower.

    • @spygeeks1
      @spygeeks1  Před 7 lety +3

      milofonbil I've been selling passive and real-time trackers for years and years and they always work underneath the vehicle it probably is bouncing off the pavement to hit the satellite. I have customers even tell me that they work inside a garage going through a two-story house. now a parking garage underground No. I wish I could sell a GPS Jammer however it's considered the same thing as a cell phone jammer and they are highly illegal.

    If you know someone who has a RF spectrum analyzer they can help you find any unusual devices maybe. These devices either have some sort of "signature" or they might transmit on a set interval. They may also be remotely accessed by cell phone. While everyone has cell phones these days if you can find a signal that always appears to be with you it may be the device you were looking for.

    • @spygeeks1
      @spygeeks1  Před 4 měsíci

      A GPS tracker signal does not show up on your WiFi list. But yes if you had a portable RF Spectrum Analyzer you could narrow in on it. Problem is most people cannot afford them being around $2500. And it takes alot of training to learn how to use it effectively. To find a tracker it takes a good physical inspection and if you have a RF/GPS Finder to assist. Great!

However we've partnered with a licensed Private Investigative Agency who can do the sweeps for you that I trained myself if you live in the Winter Garden, Clermont, Orlando Florida area. Their name and number is E.M Investigations Inc. 352-241-7490. Call them for a price. Sorry we do not know of any others who perform this type of service. Most of the GPS Trackers we sell are battery operated. It is not hard to get power from anywhere in a vehicle because 12 volts runs all around it to power tail lights and such. Are people doing this all the time? No. because it's hard to get rid of the evidence afterwards with a splice. Just look within arms reach all around your vehicle with a flashlight. After googling what GPS Trackers look like. Remember sometimes it's just a burner phone left inside your car with a tracking app installed and all locked up. Good Luck Elas and thanks for the comment.

    Theft of Gas from car and installing GPS to track people without informing them must be illegal - thieves can use GPS to prepare for theft of your property once they see your car far away from your targeted location, they take their time entering to your property and do all the theft they want - they operate in groups to track and perform theft at the same time. Thieves steal Gas when everyone is sleeping so they stay late at night to make their illegal living. Theft is illegal and is punishable by law.

If you see Any WiFi signals, those are the ones that would give you false readings on your detector. But thanks for noticing that accurate GPS detection requires the vehicle to be in motion. Not many pick up on that fact.

      Dave RodMjy if there is a Tracker getting power from the inside of your car it is not a switch it's called the OBD port Google where that is in your make and model and if you see something plugged into it simply unplug it. Most trackers do not have audio so if you're hearing the ringing of your door you probably press the OnStar button or something like that or Bluetooth has nothing to do with a Tracker really. I don't get underneath vehicles in the hot FL sun for the physical inspection needed. However the 5 minute oil change place see's the bottom of vehicles every day and will know if there is something suspect under your car. Show them my video so they know what they are looking for and give them a $20 tip if they find something.
      Remember the only way to detect a GPS with a detector is to get within 6 inches of it while it's in motion. Taking a drive on a country street getting away from the all the RF interference. Put your phone in airplane mode. Yes that is pretty hard to do while the car is in motion. It's all about the physical inspection. Keep in mind "if you're within 6 inches of it; you can see it." Anyone know how modern cars are tracked? Just having a car-phone can
    allow someone to track you. Anyone know if GPS systems can give off a
    signal that can be monitored? Also realise every car with an airbag has a
    blackbox that store a record of fundamentals like speed and g-forces,
    often insurance companies use it to deny insurance claims.

    • @spygeeks1
      @spygeeks1  Před 6 lety

      Modern Cars are tracked with a CDMA signal on Digital Spread Spectrum. Just like your smartphone, except it can be put in Airplane Mode to stop any signal coming from it. That signal Cannot be monitored by anything that you or I can legally buy. Even if your police scanner has been modified to allow those frequencies to be unblocked. You still will not be able to follow the car or do anything with it. It will hop towers as the vehicle drives too. The only way to monitor such a signal is to Buy this spygeeks.com/product/itrail-endurance-gps903/ and subscribe to the 30-day monthly plan. Then you will have a Free App on your phone to Track Live.
      The blackbox does not send a live signal that could be monitored. Unless you subscribe to a monthly plan.

Take the latest BMW or Mercedes, I don't even know where to begin with all the potential tracking devices in that car that can give off signals, or the fact that a government agency or someone else could hack it and drive the car off the road with me inside. Best solution I've found is go low tech, get an old robust car, something before wifi and smartphones were commonplace, and keep it in good maintained order.

      Some car dealers have GPS Locators in their vehicles that would be deactivated when the note is paid off. I would not know by make or model. However your dad would have signed off on it, on the fine print somewhere. When a law abiding company tracks their vehicles, they have to disclose it to whoever is buying it. Or have the chance of being sued for invasion of privacy. We sell GPS Detectors to assist in locating such devices. The hard thing is getting within 6 inches of the Tracker while it's in motion to detect it. If you're that close you can See it. Check forums with your make and model Nissan and see if anyone has talked about this. You can also go to the dealership to inquire about buying a new vehicle and see what kind of disclosures they make you sign.

IF this is mentioned upon sale and then one can wonder as whether the so called buyer just blindly agrees to this "monitoring/intrusion" into their personal lives. Aside from my cell phone I wouldnt own any modern car that can be turned off remotely at will of some business/government who may have fowled up a receipt of payment hence leaving me stranded!

      Thanks for the great comment Mantric, When we sell GPS Trackers it's mentioned that these are to track your own car in case stolen or to monitor your teenage kids using your car. Then they sign our disclaimer in store or agree to it online. However, i'm sure people are using them to track cheating spouses and such. Which if you're name isn't on the car's title, you don't have the rights to track it. There is no law requiring us to look at the title to sell a tracker. If you find a tracker on your car and can prove who put it there then you can sue them for invasion of privacy. That's why this video was made. Since we get asked more on How to Find Trackers than we actually sell. There are good detectors on the market now, even better than the one I use in this video. The physical inspection is still the best method of finding them though. And Free :)

      No. The last place it was moving is where it is on the map still, until motion resumes. The tracking software remembers this in the history.

    • @spygeeks1
      @spygeeks1  Před 4 lety

      Yes; however those are illegal. You can still buy them on the internet. If FCC catches you using one it's a hefty fine. because it blocks other peoples cell phones and GPS navigation all around you too. Including those coming from airplanes. So I would Not use one.

    • @spygeeks1
      @spygeeks1  Před 4 lety +1

      If it does not have a monthly fee, It is not a real GPS tracker. Those products you will find online that say you can find your lost keys Are Not Real GPS. they use a feature called "Crowd Source GPS" which means if at least 3 people in that mall parking lot have that specific app on their phone it can tell you where your keys are. However all they show you on your map is a mall parking lot with an area the size of a football field to look for your keys. It is not specific and does not show an address.
      ALL Real GPS Trackers have a monthly fee of at least $20 or more. Most of them offer no contract or cancellation fees. You can just go a month if you want with the Trackers we sell. www.surveillanceplus.com/collections/gps-tracking/products/gps-db-nh4g

    The OBD tracker is really a stupid device to use. Obviously, you have to gain access to the car to install it.
    They are easily discovered should the person tracked go in for emissions testing or have their car diagnosed by a mechanic.
    Furthermore, they could over-tax the CAN bus in the car (which talks with all sorts of devices in your car - the engine control unit, transmission, airbags, antilock braking/ABS, cruise control, electric power steering, audio systems, power windows, doors, mirror adjustment, battery and recharging systems for hybrid/electric cars, etc. ) and result in an accident by shifting the car into a diagnostic mode, make it impossible to recover accident information, or better yet, void the warranty of the car.

    The laws vary state to state on the use of thes but generall the OWNER of the car or truck can put one on his stuff and is NOT obliged to tell any driver of it that one is there. Even law enforcement can tack one on WITHOUT a warrent issued by a judge.
    How they work ---- they use the gps system like that "smart map" on your dash. NONE OF THEM TRANSMITS ANYTHING BACK TO THE GPS SATELLITES. Those sats are TRANSMIT ONLY with one exception, they will receive timing correction data from ONLY the control center. most cheap trackers phone home over the cell network with location data. There are some that use a tottaly separate sat for communication.. Note that small dome setting on top of a truck cab? Thats the system that DOES use sats. These allow thetruck onners to "look at the trucks dash gauges and every thing the motor conroll computer of the hood sees in addition to location data.
    If you use a rental car from almost any rental company it WILL have one phoning home to leep track of the car. Message - If you are planning on using a rental to pull a bank job with. Forget it, they KNOW where you are
    Now think about this.. ALL cell phones made for use in the US MUST have a gps reciver in it. The reason? its related to the 911 system. Make a call on it the phone WILL BY LAW transmit your location when you call 911. Same basic tracker laws apply. BUT there are apps that allow you to make any phone a tracker. You must have acces to the phone to install it. The phone is NEVER completely off untill you disconnect the battery.

      .....This is the easiest method of placing the poor man’s bug. Which I might add is still illegal to invade the privacy of others no matter which way or device you create to achieve this. My information included here is purely common knowledge shared through years of training and watching spy movies.
      The next easiest way to construct the poor man’s bug is your common prepaid cell phone. It should be paid for with cash and a fake name given. What is needed is the feature called “Auto Answer” this is important; and many phones have this feature but might not be the first one you pick up. So it is suggested to buy your prepaid phone at a real Cell Phone Place that has models on display. The way the cell phone is used as a bug is that you go into the menu or features and turn on auto answer(if it asks for one ring or two. select one) then turn the ringer and vibrate all the way off. Then place the cell phone face down so the lights that come on when it rings are blocked from view.
      Then you can call that cell phone blocking your number with *67 from any other phone and listen into the area where the device has been placed. It didn’t ring or vibrate and after one ring you can start monitoring for as long as the battery lasts. You can even record what you hear. Plus you have unlimited range all over the world. If someone ever finds it; well that’s why I said to pay cash for it and leave a fake name and block your number with *67 when calling it. All the subject can do is wonder who was ever in their car or home/business to place it. It’s my advice to hire a ninja to hide your cell phone bug in the shadows, and ninjas always wear gloves to shield their fingerprints.

      Not at all, Ive been involved with electronics way before bell labs and a little compamy known as RCA were selling commercial batches of transistors. Mostly in the commercial borodact area. Tottaly tube stuff, And know full well what can be done with radio communications. Setting aside the issue of legalities and is it worth the cost, for a bit, if you know the stuff you can seriously screw around with people or in one of my tweaking episodes On "the big eagle" Lets just say they wert exactly happy and never did catch me but Ill bet they spent millions in today's money trying to. It wasnt because I did anything more than rattle a door knob. It was where that door was. )
      Then some guys out at the white sands proving grounds got to tinkering around with a sorta weird plane they called the X15. Neat aircraft and listing to the radios was great entertainment and told ne a lot how it worked. Shortly afterwards the russians figgured out how to oribit a 15 pound (or thereabouts) radio beacon. that did nothing more than go Beep beep. Keep in mind this was right in the middle of the cold war.. The real mesage the russians were sending was just this "we can drop a nuke ANYWHERE on the face of the plannet"
      That actually resulted in ALL the manned missions including the appopo series. If you could put a few tons on the moon the SAME rocket could drop a hefty nuke payload anywhere on earth. Those manned missions required a bit of computing power that just didnt exist. Along about the start of those missions some guys out on the west coast figgured how to stick a bunch oftransitors on a chip. Nasa use those to build the computers used in those rockets.buying upo something close to 80% ofthe entire worlds production of them. Dont rember if that company started with the name it has now or changed to it later INTEL. I mention this soley because those guys were seriously killing my ability to get some chips.
      About this time I switched over to doing a lot of neat stuffwith those chips "when I could get them". I soon realized this crap was a LOT simpler to deal with that analog stuff, being basically the lasy guy I am no more analoge for me unles ihad to dealwith it.. In short Ive been dealing with "fringe" technology going on close to 5o years now, some of it was back in the arpanet days did a lot of code BEFORE there were any real standards. Got to looking at some of the new code running the net and actually spotted a bit of that early aparanet code I wrote.. .. Later known world wide as the internet.. I do know a bit about electronics stuff by the way.. as far as cracking/hacking goes this little book could be of great inerest.. www.rootzilopochtli.com/site-content/uploads/2010/02/the-cuckoos-egg.pdf The net works basiclly the SAME today..
      The ride was, and still is, in many ways great fun but Today I just sorta tinker around in my shop, do music, and watch my grandkids and one greatgrand kid grow up..

    • @machmansholdings3161
      @machmansholdings3161 Před 5 lety

      Perhaps I am reading this incorrectly, do you really want people tracking you??? It is not the act of it, it is the idea of people thinking that it is o.k. for anyone to do it for any reason. This would preclude your minor children, other than that all bets are off! WTF is wrong with anyone who thinks it is ok to be tracked for any reason. Of course you want to find it if it is in or on your vehicle. It is based on the basic doctrine of what those forward thinking players put together around 244 years ago. Open your garage door while you car is running, and stop drinking the cool aid. We live in one of the best counties in the world, don't give up our right voluntarily!

      Send me the photo and I will confirm. If it has an IMEI number on it, then it's a Real Time tracker, However you said "Logger" and those just record the GPS data and someone has to get nearby or remove it to retrieve the data. So not "Real Time". Hope this answers your question. Still send the photo for my Known GPS Trackers File.
