2019 Infiniti QX50 First Drive Review

  • The previous QX50 was fun to drive but lagged behind the latest luxury crossovers in just about every other way. Infiniti got the memo, sharpened their pencil and designed an all-new QX50 for 2019. The new model sports one of the most accommodating back seats in the segment, a large cargo area, the best interior Infiniti has ever crafted, class leading fuel economy and a dollop of new technology. On the down side it's dropped the RWD dynamic that made the EX/QX50 so much fun.
    The all-new VC-Turbo engine is the first engine in the world that can mechanically vary its compression ratio from a low of 8:1 for maximum performance to a high of 14:1 for maximum efficiency and anywhere in-between. The result is a compact luxury CUV that delivers 27 MPG and acceleration comparable to the competition's popular engine choices.

    Drove this vehicle yesterday.Very powerful.I was going 80 in a blink.Relatively quiet .Did not floor it much because the power came on smooth.Steering is not as good as an Acura MDX but ok.Rides firm,though the car I drove had 20 inch rims.Seat could use a little more padding.Overall though,the vehicle had character which is hard to find.I kinda liked it.Crash scores not in yet.Will test drive again.Looks great,feels solid

    Hard to find honest reviews. Thanks for that. I saw reviews on other models you listed in this segment and the things u said to choose infiniti for in this video, are in the others. Again, thanks for being consistently honest. Sometimes brutal and i don't always like what you say, but we're here for your input, not to give you ours. Keep makin great vids, and I'll keep watching.

    I can't wait for the battle royale between the Qx50 and the new Acura RDX. I have a feeling these are going to be a huge sales success for both Infiniti and Acura.
    And for those bemoaning the CVT FWD based 4 cylinder move, I get it. I drove the older Qx50 and it was a tall performance hatch based on the Q50. BUT this car is not for us, it is for the suburban families and this meets their needs perfectly.

    Appreciate the thorough review Alex! One of my favorite vehicles was the 2006 Infiniti FX35 that I leased for 3-yrs. They completely lost me with transversely mounted engines with CVTs. To me they're becoming Nissans with luxo interiors. My current lease is up in March, and it looks like I'll be going with a Q5 or an F-PACE.

    Gorgeous exterior and interior. I just got the majestic white 2020 QX50 Sensory FWD with Apple Car play and Android Auto and the interior finish is top notch. The CVT will take some getting use to specially coming from my previous car (2017 Q60 Red Sport), acceleration is slower in QX50 but has a smooth and quieter ride which I preferred to Q60 Red Sport stiffer ride. I'm not doing spirited driving, racing or taking this car to the track or bombing in the canyon road. I got this car because of the good deal I got from Infiniti with huge discount and incentives. The safety features of this car is really good and it drive itself and the looks. Infotainment looks dated, and not stopping my decision to get this car.

    A variable compression engine woul be the best choice to apply flex fuel technology. A VC could use gas from any part of the world or a blend of gas and alcohol without serious technical adaptation. Seems to be a bold move from Nissan/Renault.

      @@brucegates6268 I like it alot. I've got the default set to "Sport" in the menu, so it feels like any other transmission. I've tried it all ways, and that seems to be the best. Be careful - it's unexpectedly fast when you push down the pedal. I have pulled out to go around a truck at half-throttle and looked down to see I'm going 110. It does it all fast and quietly. Very comfortable. Will carry almost anything but heavy construction materials. 'Love it! Good luck with yours.

    This was a great comprehensive review of it. I want to tell Infiniti that coming from a QX70, I'm extremely disappointed. My sales person assured me this was better, after 4 Infinitis, I feel sad. I got thos 2019 QX50 and I feel Infiniti went cheaper on EVERYTHING. Dont get me wrong, I like a lot of features, like the spacier middle caddy, its does feel fast, but thats after a huge delay where it felt like a cow, til it went to a cow with a rocket that fired up late. It feels puny, sounds like a Sentra, and No Android compatibility? Jesus were in 2020 almost wth? The cosmetic lines of the car are pleasing, I dont have the perforated seats, so the ones I have feel like old grandma plastic covering the fine dining room chairs. My butt and back sweat a lot. They ate comfortable tho, I just sweat. It was a $5000 for better seats. I like this car, but it's no match to the qx70. I get it tho, infinity went cheaper to appeal to an larger crowd and make more mmoney. That makes me sad, and I'm wanting to find a new Make now, after 12 years of being a die hard infiniti person. Sigh 😕

    This was on my list of vehicles I am considering to replace my 2016 Forester XT next year, but the fact that it is only available with a CVT just knocked it off the list.
    Until someone builds a CVT which can handle more than 300 lb. ft. of torque and can be rebuilt, I will never buy another vehicle with a CVT. I would also never buy a vehicle with a CVT with fake gear changes as the only option. That defeats the main benefit to having a CVT, the ability of a CVT to hold peak power.
    Subaru is doing the same thing as Lexus. I understand programming the CVT with fake gear changes to fool people as the default, but why won't Subaru and Lexus give us the ability to switch to a pure CVT mode?

    - sluggish CVT (especially off the line and in the city)

Everyone beat up Mazda for putting a turbo 4 in the CX-9 and look at many going the same way with a 4 banger. They make them better now. Thats why I switched to Audi. Hell, I would buy a kia over infiniti now. If I want a fwd cvt I'd buy a prius which is what I drive to work everyday.

    They hit a home run on the sheet metal, its beautiful, but you'll have to pry my 3.7 VQ and real auto out of my cold, dead hands. What once was a drivers dream in the form of a Japanese made, slightly lifted shooting brake, has become a very pretty, front drive, Chinee built, CVT nightmare, soccer mom hauling, 4 bangin appliance. They'll prolly sell more this way though, mazeltov.

    It's as if they took a muscle car, gutted it, and turned it into another 4 cyl. turbo FWD hatchback/crossover. Well If Nissan wasn't going to make the ride comfortable, they should have offered the tasty VQ V6 engine, which has been sized from 2.0L to 4.0L. It's a fantastic engine folks.

    Modifying squish characteristics greatly increased detonation potential. So during heavy load, this engine will either need more fuel enrichment, or a lower compression ratio when compared to another 2.0 liter turbo. I don't expect real world mileage to really be worth the complexity. There is a reason why most aim to shift dynamic compression ratio with cam timing vs. mechanical changes.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  Před 6 lety +1

      In theory if you can mechanically vary the compression ratio you get lower pumping losses at low speeds vs simply delaying intake valve closure. Although, it is worth noting that this engine employs both high compression and stratefied injection *and* delayed valve closure to increase efficiency. The delayed valve closure is to make the effective expansion cycle longer than the effective compression cycle however, not to reduce compression as it is used in some engines

    • @corystansbury
      @corystansbury Před 6 lety +1

      Alex on Autos Delayed valve closure is not typically used to change dynamic compression ratio. That is done with lift and/or overlap typically. Valve closures, as you mention, are used to employ pseudo Atkinson cycles. Modifying mechanical compression ratio certainly has benefits over purely cam-based solutions, but also has significant disadvantages. There is a reason why Saab tried to tilt the head, maintaining a squish pad. This is a lot of complexity and friction to add in order to compromise combustion chamber shape at high load.

    Good review. I would have thought this compared to the Audi Q3 and not the Q5.
    This new design is so much better than the previous model years, which I thought was ugly. I know they tried to make it a baby FX35/QX70 but to me it never hit the mark. Now this new design looks great. Still a bit pricey, but now it looks to be somewhat worth it. :)

    and I'd put 18" wheel on it for softer ride, for more comfort, and would it handle just fine if don't care for too sporty ride ? I am a driver and love to drive, but put customers in the car, so nice to have a nice ride..

    i don't really understand, how such luxury interior and aggressive modern exterior could be combined with extremely outdated electronics: display hardware and software, design of the apps, etc.
