That motherboard manufacturing process you were discussing, using solder mask and solder paste, is done on a very small scale by hand by Lada Ada at Adafruit (also in NYC!) for prototyping, and then on a small scale, but automatically by machines for all their own boards. FYI: flux is a de-oxidizer, and also shields the components from the outside environment/air so the solder and the part you are soldering cleans up as you apply heat and solder to it.
As someone who didn’t know this and saw him squirt a big squirt of it(so much anxiety tbh), it all makes sense. I just thought ANY type of liquity would mess up an electronic piece.

It does matter if there is no WiFi if the screen doesn’t work, the screen doesn’t matter if the computer can’t turn on.

I'm a tech nerd, resident family I.T. guy, but hearing Louis say he can't do the filing of the chip due to shaky hands. I've always been nervous about board repair in general cause I too have shaky hands. Also having Steve on is the best unexpected collab ever.

@@therealb888 electronics and computer science can be entirely disjunct fields... cs should be called information science (as it is in the uk i believe) and is more akin to a subfield of discrete (pure) mathematics. Think of it this way: info sci is like astronomy. Eelctronics is like telescopes and other tools used to study astronomy and cosmology. Many astronomers might know a thing or two about the manufacturing the equipment they use but they know more so how to operate them. It's an engineers and technicians job to assemble/repair/maintain that equipment.
Only a few minutes in, and I'm loving this so much. Louis in teacher-mode and Steve asking all the questions that pop up in my head whenever I watch repairs. This filled in so many little tiny gaps for me! Thanks!! This helps so much!!

Explained flux as something that allows the solder to flow better. Main point is that it keeps air away like with welding. It doesn't let air near heated metal surfaces which would create an oxide layer on them. To which solder doesn't want to stick to. Also, helps clean a bit, since some stuff/muck floats away from the surface into or to the surface of the solution.
Watching somebody with as much technical know how as Steve learn from another techie is a dream come true! Looking forward to watching this in full when I wake and learning a thing or two on the way myself.

I knew this colab will happen sooner or later. Glad it came through despite how closed off the world has been due to "current events". Enjoyed seeing the usual expert PC parts and assembly tester and reviewer jump straight into Macbook repair under Louis's guidance. Plus you guys are cat people so I knew you guys will hit it off just fine.

Louis, you should check out Charlotte, NC! Your business would do so well here, esp with such close proximity to the Triad and RTP areas (but it still has a decent metro area). in a lot of ways, I really love our home state...mountains, beaches...it's laid back - it's got a lot to love.
