BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON, HOW TO FIX IT EASILY! MUST WATCH!

- Brake lights stay on or brake lights won't turn off? Here's how you fix this annoying issue. Luckily this diy is very easy and straight forward. The reason why the brake lights on your vehicle stay on and won't turn off is usually because of a broken brake light switch grommet also commonly referred to as a brake pedal stopper or brake pedal grommet. In this video I show you how to fix it easily. Get a new brake light switch grommet from your dealership or local auto parts store, climb under your dash, pop it back into place and your problem should be solved unless there is another issue causing your brake lights to stay on which can be a bit more complicated. When a brake light switch grommet gets old, it usually breaks and causes the brake lights on your vehicle to stay on and not turn off because the brake light switch no longer has the grommet to make contact with in order to signal the brake lights to turn off.
Every time that you step on the brakes, the grommet and pedal move away from the brake light switch which triggers the brake lights to turn on and stay on until you release the brake pedal. Once the brake pedal is released, the brake lights turn off once the brake pedal springs back to it's resting position allowing the brake light switch to make contact with the brake light switch grommet.
A broken brake light switch grommet can also lead to a dead battery as many drivers may not notice when their brake light switch grommet has broken. The reason why this issue may cause a dead battery is that once the vehicle is turned off, the brake lights stay on, causing a draw from the battery without any resource to recharge it. One tell tale sign that your brake light switch grommet has broken, other than your brake lights staying on and not turning off, is any sign of small plastic or rubber debris on the floorboard or floor mat of the driver side of your vehicle.
Among a dead battery, a bad brake light switch and grommet may cause other issues. One other issue that a bad brake light switch grommet may present is the potential risk of getting rear ended. This issue not only poses a danger to you but it poses a danger other drivers on the road as well. This is because once the brake lights stay on, other drivers behind you might not be able to differentiate when you are applying the brakes or not which can pose a huge danger. Therefore, I would recommend fixing this issue as soon as possible.
Luckily, as I said before, usually this issue requires minimal effort or expense to fix.
As always I hope that this video helps someone, if it did then like this video, share it with your friends, and subscribe to the channel!

Worked like a charm, thanks so much! No shops are open tonight, so I stuck a couple coins in there to keep the lights off til morning. It already killed my battery last night when I didn’t catch the lights staying on, then I wasn’t going to be able to take it in until tomorrow after jumping it-this video made my night.
I’m super glad that it helped! 💯 Great thinking with the coin trick. That’s a super innovative solution! Best of luck and I hope you enjoy the rest of your night!
I have to come back here and thank you…you’re a life saver…my battery ran down overnight due to the brake light on throughout the night…had to get a booster to get the battery on…I just googled what might be wrong and came across this video…just got the universal grommet from Canadian Tire and I fixed it back myself

Scubah, you're my hero! After watching your simple video fix I think no way is this going to be so easy. After charging my battery this morning (thank goodness this happened on a weekend) I go out, look under the brake pedal of my 2003 Outback and was thrilled to behold little broken chunks of plastic on the floor mat exactly like in your video! You saved my bacon and a bunch of time fraught with worry and frustration!!! Thanks so much for this expertly well done video, and...Keep on keep'n on!

Worked on my wife's 2006 Toyota Camry. The switch is difficult to find, as it's tucked behind a spring and has metal brackets to either side, but a penny with some double sided duct tape was enough to solve the issue until I can track down a grommet. Thanks for the video, very much appreciated!
Glad it helped! The penny trick is a really creative fix in the meantime! Awesome way to improvise! 💯🤙🏾
Ahhhh!! You rock! I know this is the issue w/ the Honda. It is good knowledge to know. Now when I see cars with their brake light on I know what might be wrong. That Honda is sweet too. And on a bright yellow/orange it rules. Take care.
@@Edwinovoine Absolutely, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen cars driving around with the brake lights stuck on and I immediately go ahah 💡 I know what’s wrong. Of course it also poses a danger to the other drivers since they can’t tell if that car is braking or not so I always try to switch lanes to avoid that.

Yep. One brake light on 1995 Integra was stuck ON. As described, I found two broken plastic pieces on the driver's floor. I will get replacement part. Perhaps, one brake light is also out, since both brake lights were not stuck ON. I'd just moved the car 15 hours earlier, likely when plastic fell out, draining the battery to point car would not start, but brake light stuck ON. Disconnected negative terminal for now! THANKS!!! Seems like eventually ALL old Integra switches will age and break!
Absolutely! It sounds like one brake light itself may have been out prior to the brake light switch grommet breaking apart. Most definitely a common issue when cars get start to age. You’ve got it! Great diagnosing! 💯

Glad it helped! Check with your local auto parts store like O’Reilly, or Advance Auto Parts. They may have something that works. As a short term solution until you are able to get the grommet, you could put a small bolt and nut in place of the grommet just so that it makes contact with the switch and turns the brake lights off. Easier to take out the fuse than to disconnect the battery because have to reprogram radio every time battery is reconnected
Facts, if you have a factory head unit. I honestly disconnect my battery every time I pull a fuse as an added precaution. However, I have an aftermarket head unit so programming it is pretty easy.

I assume you have to purchase this part at a Honda dealership? Or, would a local auto parts store have it?

@@gabrielwelch6483 most definitely! 💯
Thanks bro I was about to call technician
Glad it helped and you didn’t have to! 💯🤙🏾
Put a bolt with a nut until the part arrives, btw its the same for the accel pedal. That's for your cruise control in case you are like me and trying to figure out why it doesnt work even though you debugged the whole system 😂😂😂
Good call! That definitely works too! Lol yeah at first I looked at it and was like wait a minute. I had no idea that the cruise control grommet fell out as well until I went up under the dash! 😂
Btw everyone when that happens dont disconnect the battery, just unplug the break light switch located just above where you replace the grommet
Another great solution to break the circuit. Instead of going to the battery location, you could just unplug the pigtail going to the switch. Unfortunately the last thing we would want anyone to do is unplug the wrong switch under their dash, hence the battery suggestion. With that being said, the battery location on some vehicles are more difficult to access than others so thank you for adding this tip! 😎🤙🏾
What is the little white thing called?
It’s called a brake light switch grommet 🤙🏾
When I look
Under my dashboard there’s nothing there what do I do the cheack
Usually when your brake light switch grommet breaks, you will see little hardened rubber pieces on the floorboard. In the event that you don’t see anything on the floorboard, it could be a different issue. If your car isn’t receiving power, my first point of diagnosis would be checking the battery. You can jump start the car and see if it receives power and turns on. Once you do that, go to the back of your car and take a look at the brake lights. If they stay on even when you are not applying pressure to the brake pedal then you’re having an issue with the brake light switch.
When the brake lights stay on with the car off, it draws a constant electric load from the battery leading it to drain.
Hope this helps!
what if its just one brake light that stays on, and only is on when i turn parking/headlights on? and when i actually brake it doesnt light up?
It sounds like that may be an issue with the bulb itself. If the light turns on when you turn on the headlights but doesn’t signal, get brighter, when you step on the brake pedal, it’s a sign of a bad brake light bulb. In many instances, the same bulb is utilized for tail lights and brake lights. Basically one side of the connector signals once you hit the brakes and the other side signals when you turn on your parking lights/headlights. So if you swap that bulb to a new bulb, it should solve your problem. Best of luck! 😎
@@Scubah thanks man, I have a few spare bulbs so it’ll be easy. I just assumed it maybe had to do with wiring or something, I haven’t actually had the time to just try changing the bulb first
@@wrld9540 you’re welcome man! Yeah definitely try swapping the bulb for one of the spares first. It should fix that issue
@@Scubah worked just as you said. thanks again man. i know i could have searched but most of the results were showing up for the reason in your video and not just a simple bulb change. thanks for sharing the general knowledge
