Love that at some point during this, Seth straight up forgets that he was supposed to be roasting his writers and just starts delivering the jokes as if in the monologue XD
He can't turn it off
Also he knows some of them had potential or were just straight-up good 😂
Yeah, he's usually more consistent in showing their mugs after each joke.
its because the jokes were getting big laughs and claps. if they fell dud he would have to interrupt the flow.
The audience going "awwwww" at Karen's picture was very heartwarming.

The bee-honey joke was ACTUALLY good! More of this pls seth!!!
There were actual funny jokes, but lord, that was not one of them.

I love how he always says they're unusable, but this has turned into one of my very favorite segments.
Some of those jokes only landed due to Seth's delivery. Like, he may think they suck, but even in this segment saying they suck, he gives the joke 100% in the delivery.

I will never forget Karen's "That's an oeuf" joke from when Macron got egged. Sometimes I'm just doing dishes or whatever and remember that joke, and then laugh. After that joke, she can make all the bad jokes in the world and I'll still think she's a genius.
Her jokes may get panned, but shell always have a place in our hearts.

At this point "surprise inspection" is less about Seth roasting writers for bad jokes and more about Seth delivering the edgier (and often funnier) jokes they didn't fit into the monologue
The bee joke made me spit out my water. So simple yet powerful.
I'm only 2:00 in, but so far, Ian is on FIRE! (I think Seth expected groans but got solid laughs from the audience on both the Honey and Santander jokes)

The Honey joke got a much bigger laugh than some jokes that actually did make it to the regular show. The Kenya and Scream jokes were awesome. All of this is making me highly suspicious. There is an international joke-hiding conspiracy at play here!
I think it's the context and people are laughing at how painful the jokes are.

I was hoping for a callback to the attic murder hornets as the punchline to the bee joke. Honey was funny, but a reference to the Meyers boys would have been even better.

Correction: The number 1 rated show in the US in 1999 was Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Tuesday), followed by Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Thursday), Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Sunday), ER, and then Friends in 5th.

Seth's writers are so good that their unusable jokes are actually funny compared to what you see in other shows.

You gotta love how Seth includes his writing staff in his show. Conan had some bits, but he's gone. But none of the other talk show host do this. Some have a band, but no one spreads the joy around like Seth.
The Mel Gibson joke was brutal, and perfect.

Correction: you didn't say who wrote the Lou Bega, Tweet, Ellen, Mel Gibson, valentine, or Scream jokes. That's like 50% of the entire list this week. What's the point of "Surprise Inspection" if you're not calling out the writers who wrote particular jokes?
I'd say he changed his mind after all of those got a good response from the audience except the Lou Bega joke is in that list.

A number of these jokes were actually better than many of the ones from recent monologues…
I'm beginning to suspect that these jokes are a way for the writers to get in jokes that they thought of the next day/too late for the taping. Like a kind of realizing in the shower the next morning what you SHOULD have said during that one discussion at work.

I laughed at all of them. Some even landed better than a lot of the monolog jokes that make it through. The Lou Bega one is gold. I don't care what anyone says. And the Mel Gibson one? Dude! Trashing Mel never gets old. That's why Gervais did it at so many awards shows. Well, that or because it's low hanging fruit.

Oddly, this was the second reference to Lou Bega I’ve heard this week-MBMBAM also referenced him in their latest episode.
It's decidedly low-hanging fruit, hitting addicts for what they did at the depth of their addiction is basically punching down.
RDJ was so high he walked into his neighbour's house by mistake and went to sleep in their teen daughter's bed. He was also convicted and sentenced for his multiple episodes of drug possession and intoxication. Nobody brings that up at every opportunity.
