My friend Ricardo Có (RIP) was 2012 WAKO above waist British champion and 2014 WAKO K1 European bronze. I'm not sure if he was pure aggression like Melvin/Wanderlei but he had very sharp reflexes and he preferred throwing hooks to jabs/crosses: he used hooks, flying knees and jumping, spinning kicks. If you consider Remy Bonjasky to be like Melvin/Wanderlei then Ricardo is like that. His name is Ricardo "The Rocket" Có

That's how I fight, and my kru hates it. He always tells me I'm a point fighter, and work the outside. I like to bang in the middle and see who's standing at the end. Doesn't always work. But, the crowd seems to like it.

I had the pleasure of working with Melvin (helped him with his grappling) for a bit while I lived in Japan. I would later even spend some time in Holland helping him with his Prep for the Dream Middleweight GP. Melvin was one of the hardest working athletes I've ever seen. He had a true love and passion for what he did. He was always very inspiring to me. Probably the most memorable time I had with him was watching the K1 Max 2009 tournament finals backstage at the event. He would breakdown every fighter strengths and weaknesses. He would talk about what they needed to do to win; Explaining to me the small adjustments from each fighter to get the advantage and pull ahead. He was never wrong on his assessment and the fight would often play out as he had explained. We all know his fight style. Kill or be killed. He knew this and knew what the fans wanted to see. He never disappointed in that regard. However, the man knows kickboxing. I mean, think about it; You had to be damn good to do what he was doing. Always undersized and always a threat to anyone he fought. On top of that, he was a man of honour. Truly. No B.S from him. Training and working with him was one of the highlights of my career for sure. Legend.

I trained at Mike's Gym from 1997 till 2012 and sparred with Melvin quite a bit. I am the same height as him, and I have never seen a short fighter close so well with taller fighters, something that was always a problem for me. He was in his opponent's face before they could blink. But he had amazing control when sparring, I never felt threatened by him even though he could easily take me out.

@@nvanguy6868 Oh he could be. I never sparred him when he was preparing for a fight. That's a different ballgame. But on regular days he was perfectly aware of the level of his sparring partner and would fight accordingly.

Despite being so explosive he’s had a really long career. He’s 46 and still fighting on Bellator so a high level of MMA. He’s not for off a 30 year professional career!

Our biggest proud is Alistair Overeem. The last K1 champ en the first MMA fighter to be also a kickboxing champ at the highest level. Fought in de top 7 in UFC till 41 with ease

One aspect when he KOed Hunt that was not mentioned is that he didn't even plant his feet on the ground to make Hunt collide with his fully grounded bodyweight behind his fists but that he was walking backwards and had his feet basically mid-air when he dropped Hunt. THIS shows how crazy his power is.
And you rarely see a fighter who puts so much torque into his strikes as he does. If you disregard defensive aspects during your offense, his biomechanics are as close to perfect to generate power as it gets. There are other pure offensive fighters but none have the offensive biomechanics to the extend he has.
Usually, I prefer fighters with high fight IQ that have good defense to avoid getting damage, but somehow I've always had a soft spot for Manhoef. He's the odd one among my favorites 😂
@Chiku N It was similar to how Anderson Silva dropped Griffin. It was both, perfect placement and the opponent moving in, thereby giving additional force, and probably also the opponent not expecting the incoming punch thus not bracing for the impact. But still, Manhoef has the highest KO rate in elite kickboxing/MMA period. That dude has insane power.

@@stephenkinq5425 Tyson and Dempsey had pretty good defensive skills in their offense while being aggressive though. Manhoef is just literally what I'd imagine a crazy berserker to be.
@Chiku N There is some backstory to the fight. Hunt barely trained if at all for that fight and at the time he was a meth user, consequently he was WAY out of shape and should not have been fighting in the ring whatsoever. Being out of shape does adversely effect your ability to take a punch considerably since you just aren't ready. Combine the backstory with the fact Hunt ran head first into Melvin's cannonball fists, its not that difficult to see how and why Mark Hunt suffered probably the most embarrassing loss of his career. Hunt basically showed up for a pay-check and the result showed it.
@Chiku N The overconfidence was probably why he didn't train for the fight at all. Many hardcore fans regard the version of Hunto where he looked out of shape and was on a skid as Meth Hunt 😂
I don't think it was until he got into the UFC when he got off the meth and started taking fights a lot more seriously.
This kind of fighting style is the most effective on the bar fight, street and any emergency situation

@@LawrenceKenshin Melvin showed his heart in that fight, just as Robbie Lawler did in his fight with Melvin. I've never seen someone eat leg kicks so hard as Robbie did in that fight, and yet he toughed it out long enough to land the haymaker on Melvin and sleep him!

Melvin Manhoef was one big joy to watch fighting. NEVER had a boring fight. Loved seeing him in his prime. One of Dutch true fighting Legends. Up there with Ernesto Hoost, Peter Aerts, Bas Rutten, Remy Bonjasky, Sem Schildt and Rico Verhoeven!

He fought the biggest K1 legends, these guys are considered the best kickboxers in history. He also fought some lesser opponents. You should watch his fights, and also watch the fights from his opponents. K1 was so amazing, nowadays there is Glory kickboxing, it's the best organization of this generation, but not comparable to K1.

Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.

This complication makes it look like he was unbeatable. But when he fought a real champion like Gokhan Saki. He was totally outclassed & totally beaten. Never got anywhere near Saki. When a wild fighter meets a skilled fighter that is the result. If he worked more on his skillset he could be one of the best.
Tbh Saki was one of the best, it wasn't like Melvin lost to a nobody
he had great power and speed, but his only weakness was his glass jaw. What separates a great fighter from a good fighter is possessing a granite jaw. You may have the most powerful and fastest punch, but if you have a weak jaw, you can't go far in your career. The unfortunate thing is that you can't train your jaw, since a granite jaw is a gift. You either have it or you don't.
I think maybe later on in his career you could see his chin deteriorate. Man's been in a lot of fights with bigger fighters. Plus, Holland sparring...
It's not really that he had a glass jaw, he would just get hit clean alot. He talks about it in the sound bite in the video. "If you don't throw punches, you never leave gaps. I come in wild and throw alot of punches. That's why there are gaps."
If you get hit clean by professional fighters, it doesn't matter if you have a "granite chin" or "glass chin". That granite turns to glass when it's hit enough times by a sledgehammer
So Melvin lives close to me, some guys tried to rob him at his hime recently. Dude punched through the window of the getaway car with his bare fists to subdue the 3 thiefs while police was on the way. True legend
How heavy is he and what weight class is he in? He seems to have quite a lot of cardio for his size, throwing nonstop bombs and with such explosiveness. Every other heavyweight(I assume since he was fighting mark hunt, but it looked like Pride so who knows) would already be gassed after half a round.
For the first half of his career he competed up at light heavy 205 mostly, being a good 4 or 5 inches shorter than everyone. He'd also would fight a mw and even up at hw sometimes. Then the last decade plus, he's competed mostly at middleweight.
He's the one fighter I would get nervous just watching. Insane!!
His leg kicks tho were something to see. With a wind up of a soccer player, he had robie Lawler all messed up before he got finished.
