- Doctor Fink, Lisa Coleman, Bobby Z., Wendy Melvoin, and Brownmark share their memories of taking ballet classes with Prince, Tipper Gore protesting "Darling Nikki," starring in one of the great rock movies of all time, and what that "Is the water warm enough?" line really meant.

Love how Wendy describes each band member as a group of cooks, Prince as master chef and "Purple Rain" as the dish. Classic. :)
Eric Schwartzberg THE BEAUTIFUL 1S:LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE!
Wish someone would have described her.
Wendy speaks like an artist. Jesus spoke in pictures too
Thank you! Excellent and fitting description! She is actually the first person that I think of when I think "The Revolution"! She's always been intriguing.
I remember High School in Detroit where EVERYONE was coming to school in scrubs because of Dr. Fink!! Fun times!
I love how they're all smooshed together on the couch.
One of my favorite bands. They played their asses off working with Prince! You can tell that they are real tight because you never see 50+ yr old famous professionals squeezed up together on a couch like they're pre-teens.
Salute to Dr Fink
All these years later, he is still OWNING it
Oh yeah. He's def paid for that keyboard now.
Agreed, also the Revolution should be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame by now
Like a boss!!!!!!
Loved his line in the film Purple Rain about Wendy, that was hilarious and his facial expression was priceless!
@@blakewigginssnewwavechanne404 for what?
they genuinely look and act like a FAMILY
THEY WAS ONE OF THE BADDEST BANDS IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC!!!
Were
@@fortylove68 Take your proper speaking ass somewhere with that. I don't speak perfect language and don't care. Go to English class with that shit.
They certainly was.
THEY *WAS* THE BADDEST BAND IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC!!!
So agree love them and in Purple Rain
Who else clicked "like" before even watching?
Their insights into Prince and their experiences with him are fascinating. What really strikes me is how truly close they are. Look how they're all huddled on the couch together. You can't fake that kind of affection, and it came through in their sound.
They can't stop talking enough for me! I'm like absorbing every word! What an incredible time to be alive and young during the Purple Rain era. I was in high school and between Prince and The Revolution and Micheal Jackson and the Thriller album! The air was rare and made of pure magic. You felt so alive. Music was taking you places. Just complete out of body experiences was happening.... You couldn't be a teenager or in your 20's at a better time in American music.
Man I miss the 80's. Best time of my life.
Exactly
Word!
@James Lee I think Michael Jackson should take a lot of credit for helping people to look at music rather than listening to it.
Can you imagine how music would sound today if people had continued to listen?
@@ezstaples6653 word uP !
The Revolution are so legendary!!! They helped Prince create history with his music. Such cool people
I agree. Purple Rain is my favorite album all time. The musicianship from everyone is just incredible. 1984 was such a magical year too with the movie and soundtrack being such big hits. I was very disappointed when he broke up the band after the Parade album in '86. It's wonderful to seem them reunited to honor Prince and their music.
Prince was an amazing artist. His music is such a joy to listen now and then. I look at his videos and it makes me happy . That is all I can say an amazing man gone too soon. Wow he was sexy.
they are definitely a legendary band. and it's good to see how comfortable after all these years they are with each other.
Prince was the absolute master. We'll never get another one.
I agree.
This is so nice to see the entire gang together. 😍😍 Love you guys.
Yess!
Prince's best group in my opinion...hands DOWN!
hail yeah
I know Prince wanted his music to evolve by basically starting a new band, but I truly missed him performing with the Revolution.
"I dreamed you wrote a song -- play it for me."
Such a great thing to be told.
7th grade me desperately in love with Lisa and Wendy. So glad I grew up in the 80s
Me too! Adore them!
Thats why that album was so focused. Prince really devoted his time with his Band and affiliates to create an incredible album and movie.
Something not too many artists do, IMO. It's usually like, "Okay, the label is waiting for the album, & I need to give them a single", so with all the hustle and bustle from the corporate side of it, you probably don't have the time to explore your creativity.
I love this interview. What struck me is their closeness. They seem genuinely tuned into each other. And they're funny. That whole diatribe about "Is the water warm enough" made me laugh. We were die hard Prince fans back in the day and it's cool to see these guys today.
I thought the closeness was due to the small couch 😂
@@-laydeeintrigue- I was thinking the same! 😂
The VERY first day it opened at the biggest town over from me...I went 25 nights in a row to see it.... there wasn't ever, won't ever or NEVER could be ANYONE to even get 100 miles within his genius... truly... closer to a million miles the Mozart of his era.
I hope The Revolution plays more. Not just the Prince stuff. I would love to hear them play their own songs.
@ijcn0jir3nvjn3fjcifn Wendy and Lisa do. Not sure about the others.
@@270yis7 Wendy & Lisa's duo stuff is exceptional, definitely recommend
Now I'm here in 2020... Are they still holding the candle?
@ijcn0jir3nvjn3fjcifn I think they can do whatever they wish. They were a part of Prince in that Era and people want to hear it. And they don't write clown music.
"I'm here to tell ya...there's somethin' else. OUR music.."
Prince and The Revolution did 6 Purple Rain concerts in my city and I went to about 3 of them - I was probably 19 years old then. For one of the concerts, I worked backstage because I had a contact who worked at the arena. That was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. While backstage, when it was about time for Prince to go on stage, I was asked by someone on his team to hold a flashlight on the floor after the arena's lights were dimmed so Prince could see his way to the stage without being seen by the crowd. It was very dark when he walked out but I was close enough to see him, how tiny he was, and how high his heels were. Then he made his appearance on stage sitting in the bathtub and performing "When Doves Cry". That was a fun night!
Awesome.
Wendy is the base of that group! I love her sooo much! All of you are Giants. Thank you all for a great childhood.
You can tell they love each other. So glad they had one another when he passed. There's nothing like having someone who can TRULY understand what you're going thru when times are rough. They share a unique experience in having known him musically and personally. I mean, if Prince's death was hard for us, I can't imagine how it was for them. Glad they had each other.....😔
That's kind! I like that...
"I dreamed you wrote a song, play it for me." LOL
And, doesn't that sound just like something Prince would say? :)
@@anthonyyoutubefan7567 yes it absolutely does.
i wonder if Brownmark regrets quitting the band.
😭😭😭😭
I was dreaming when I wrote this...
Bringing back sooooooo many memories. Computer Blue, the actual steps, and sounds, chords! Wow, So much intelligence went into all of his music.
Cool Crafty Creations U got Purple Rain deluxe do u
The final seconds of this video are hilarious with Bobby Z and Brownmark 😄
I LOVE THE FACT THAT THEY WERE FIRED AND STILL TALK ABOUT PRINCE WITH NOTHING BUT LOVE AND RESPECT!!
We are thanking God....We are thanking Prince for The Revolution coming back in our lives....This is what we need most to grieve and mourn...AND to be so lovingly comforted!!! Our Revolution came to the rescue...I pray us being there for them every step of the way...Comforts Them!!!
I'm getting old but I don't regret growing up in these time. I love the classic rock and R&B artists that I grew up. Back in days these album was playout until vinyl worn out. I love these album and 1999 album. And prince singles he release are classic songs.
"Stay behind the beat" that's soooooooooo important for musicians !!!
Details?
...And keep it on the ONE!( the first downbeat)
Everything is on the ONE, Y'all!!!
It causes the rhythm to hump, if you you push the rhythm it takes away the groove. Really bland sound.
@@ericthompson9970 - Bob Marley is in heaven teaching Prince about the “2 and”
This is so cool to hear their experiences with prince during this time playing in this band. I used to watch purple rain everyday after it came out I still enjoy it as if I was still 13.
These five individuals along with Prince cut the rawest and most funky jam when they put the extended version of Computer Blue together. 🔥
They should make a documentary about the Revolution, from that first line up:
Prince
Bobby Z
Andre Cymone
Dez Dickerson
Gail Chapman
Dr. Fink
To the line up that did the "Parade" tour
Prince
Bobby Z
BrownMark
Wendy
Lisa
Dr. Fink
Miko Weaver
Eric Leeds
Atlanta Bliss
There's so much footage out there from that era and there's no doubt a lot of anecdotes about how they all got together and Prince destroying that iconic white "Cloud" guitar when they played the very last show.
No love for mickie free?
Right never cared for NPG (New Power Generation)
Can you even imagine any other super band sitting like this. This close, really. Family.
I love these guys so much. They were all as much a part of the beginning as Prince was. Come on, Dr Fink!
I was only 10 years old in 84 but I knew I was in love with Wendy an lisa.
Mee too
Same here. I was 15 at the time
What a genuinely nice bunch of people - A credit to yourselves and to Prince. Wish could have seen you guys live.
Not really ,Wendy is obnoxious and won't shut up.
Prince said this was the best band ever!!! 💜
I would have loved to see those ballet lessons, to see how Morris Day and Jerome Benton practice the "Chili sauce" and the "Bird"
Great dance
I met Dr. Fink! Such a LOVELY individual. Also, why is it so cute that they are all squeezed on the couch like that?
They were the perfect compliment to a musical genius, including Dez Dickerson.
Met Dez at a Knicks game in the Garden (vs The Bullets) in 1985...he was cool, a guy I worked with asked him to autograph my program, he obliged...I still have it. Amazing how many people sat around me and had no idea who he was, they kept asking me, 'who is that?' I just shook my head...
ESP Andre Cymone
Seeing them now, its like a group of teachers. They're were a world class band.
Wendy is really smart and expressive....no wonder Prince was into her twin(she being into Wendy helped)
So cool. Their chatter at the end is the best!
"Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome...The Revolution"
Wendy reminds me of an older sister that always has your back
I'm so glad I got to see them on their tour it meant a lot
That sofa looks so cramped, especially poor Wendy...!
Love how he conditioned them to the point where it just came natural. Thats with everything. Its all about repetition. Do it so much you dont think about it. Genius!! Great hearing from them.
Prince and the revolution were and are musical geniuses!
Saw them in concert. They were magnificent. Purple Rain Tour, Maple Leaf Gardens, 1984. My first concert.
They were a great collective. I wish he would have formerly got back together with them before he passed. So much talent amongst all of them.
Can I thank Wendy for that light bulb moment when she was talking about timing advice from Prince.
Oh my, that was priceless advice!
"Is the water warm enough?"
"No, I need it hotter."
"Could you pass the shampoo?"
"I have a duckie."
LMAOOOOOOO
that was comedic gold...LOL I laughed also! lol
😆😆😆😆‼️
Hilarious !!!!!
I died 😂
BABHAHAHHAAH😂😂😂
I love Revolution they are amazing.😁😁😁
You can feel the genuine family love the Revolution has for the Purple One and for each other. I also love at the end how they poke fun at Wendy and Lisa's dialogue in the beginning of 'Computer Blue'...hilarious.
lol! "I have a duckie." This is one of my favorite interviews with them. I appreciate that they all seem to let each other speak, and try to give all members a chance to explain their thoughts on their history. Wendy (and Bobby) are so good with describing all members and tying them all together as a team.
See how they are all sitting together no egos nobody thinking that one is better than the other.
Would be awesome to see a Revolution interview where all the members talked.
BrownMark finally speaks lol
He's still sooo sexy!
Daniel Laurie Exactly. He rarely spoke. He mainly just pouted & batted his eyelashes.
BLACKSENSUALITY Actually beside Prince he was the best dancer in the Revolution.
Prince had, and this is a somewhat sad fact, prevented The Revolution from speaking. In fact, I think Wendy and Lisa were contacted by Prince himself requesting they stop talking about him so much, and may have, if my deep purple concorde super fan factoid dendrites are correct, even sent out a letter from his lawyer to them.
This is why so many Prince associates now, are sharing many stories, mostly positive though, and even showcasing album art, unseen photos, unheard versions, and video and even real stories of behind the scenes that Prince when alive would of practically SUED them. It's like a floodgate have opened and there is STILL tons more to be known, seen and heard. I know from the inside that Prince was NOT happy with Sheila E.'s last book and some of the stuff she was saying in public. .::Modernaire
Right on I couldn't agree with you more
Cause he didn't say anything in PR but looking at his watch
The part about the character not listening to their stuff was fascinating. Really impressive that Prince would put that negative spin on that character knowing it would be linked to him as a real artist all in the service of art.
Revolution is My Life 💜💜💜 I Adore Them all so much!!!! I Hope They Know How Much They Mean to their Fans/Fams 💜💜💜💜💜
These group of musicians are the reason why I do what I do!!!
Wendy sounds like a totally humble and down to earth lady. Love her!
What an iconic band from my youth. I would love to see these guys do some music together today.
Love seeing everyone from the Revolution looking great!!!!!!💜💜💜RIP Prince
A lot of folks think Purple Rain to be his masterpiece but I disagree. The Sign O The Times album is the epitome of his creativity in my opinion
1999 album is his masterpiece in my opinion
Damn I’ve said that these 3 are 1A 1B and 1C ! 🤣💜💜
"I dreamed you wrote a song, play it for me"
That's outstanding.
Epic interview ! I'm an Ex radio jock and I was at a gym doing cardio in Altamonte Florida . And Purple Rain was on ! I looked to my left and Brown Mark was training next to me. Sure he thought nobody would recognize him. I leaned over and said " Hey ? Are you Brown Mark? " He was like wow ! You must be in the industry cause nobody would've recognized me ! Was CRUSHED when learning of his Death !😢😢😢😢 RIP His Royal Badness !
Saw them at the Park West in chicago on the 5th of october 2018 , great show , loved them .....
I like that prince was open to everyone's musical musings I guess you could say, I was under the impression he was a me me me I get the glory type of guy. Glad I was wrong
Thank you for these snippets of insight into Prince's genius & for sharing your stories. Leon Russell was a fan of Prince's according to my companion who was working with Leon at the time. Leon was an early member of the Wrecking Crew in LA and I learned recently through of your interviews that Lisa & Wendy's father were part of the Wrecking Crew.
Wendy's father, Michael Melvoin
That's why Prince became who he was. He knew it was time to take a even greater leap of faith. They didn't believe in it. But,hhe did she said. He had tooo. It was his career. He went all in for the project. Bobby said he had too. Purple Rain forced him into patience. Happy he did that. It shows you once he did that focused. The ramifications were extraordinary.
One of the best band ever...
You All are Wonderful! He Lives Through You!!!! Thank You
This is my favorite Prince band ever! 💜💜💜
I don’t rememBer any another band but the revolution. Most memorable most favorite
damn. Lisa can still get it.
So cool to see them together.....their music was off the charts.....literally and figuratively!!
Oh my god, the part where they were joking about Computer Blue has me in stitches!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Legends from my childhood right here!
The estate needs to release a live concert DVD of Parade & Love Sexy tour.
I can't tell you how wonderful it is to see you all and listen to you all talk after all these years!
It's like listening to part of your family talking + feeling that "wonderful warmness" it brings because Prince + you guys were like my family.
How I wish that one of you would say, in this video, move over...+ PRINCE would enter + take part in the conversation!
I really miss him!
I need to tell you all, though, the level of + respect I have for you all!
Hope to see you the next time you come to Toronto!☺️❤️
I also like wendy and lisa's music too!!!
4M Me too! I like BrownMark's music as well😉
Yes they were the first strong female music duo that caught my attention. They exuded a power that was tantalizing and inspiring.
Oh man, the first Wendy & Lisa album is one of my top 10 all time records from anyone, maybe up near top 5. That album is beautiful, totally captures the Los Angeles Jazz Rock scene then, for me. It's a time capsule and just fantastic. I hope later in the Rev's shows they start playing 'Waterfall' and the most appropriate song for today, 'Song About', I'd start full on crying on that one. .::Modernaire
Great seeing them all together again!!
Wendy was right in her description of the band and Prince. I know they may not have seen it but we saw it and we loved it. A grand moment in time. Wow. I'm glad I lived to see and experience it.
I have watched this many times and can just imagine living this. That why it was so great.
These interviews are my favorite on youtube. This is Family.
WOW! I Love these people!
being able to now watch and listen to this group of people, is amazing, thanks for sharing
Seeing them brings back so many memories as a child
Prince and the Revolution was so awesome,fa really.
Legends. Thank you guys for the music and the memories. Best years of my life. I want to go back. Prince you are the best we miss you so much. I will love you forever 💜💜
Journeymen musicians talking about music intelligently. This is what I needed.
I was able to get ahold of a couple albums called Prince Vault Collections from his early days. Each song is rich with melody and each track is full of sounds and unique grooves ranging from many genres. I'm willing to bet that most people aren't truly aware of how talented Prince was. He was like a living music library of sound and skill and a very special gift to manifest it into the living sounds of his art.
I was there at the First Avenue gig Wendy mentions. It’s was a MN dance theater fund raiser that my friends sister dragged me to. I was a metal head out of place but It was a great show. I didn’t realize until years later that some of the songs were on the Purple Rain album. I remember how quiet the audience was when they played Purple Rain.
Great band I love them so much.awesome group of individuals who all played an extreme role in great music
So great to here the band members talk about what they all experienced working with Prince, as well as the filming of, "Purple Rain." Talented musicians all.
I love them! Sometimes I put the 'Purple Rain' film on just to hear the music. So great to see them all these years later. "Computer Blue" may be my very favorite song and I love that performance! It sounds like Prince was truly a musical genius and a great mentor to his fellow musicians. What a joy it must have been for them all to work together. They made magic happen! Thank you for sharing.
🎶🌹🎶
have enjoyed getting to know Prince more as a person than a performer through these CZcams session's. Love the guy! Genius til the end and such an awesome genuine human. Thanks Prince for all that you achieved and all that you gave to all of us...old and new.
Makes me so happy to see Revolution members talking about Prince with genuine love.
I love this!! Thank you for sharing ❤️
Why does Wendy remind me of Carrie Fisher..?🤔
Omg she does
