I’ve been planning on producing my own album since I was 20. I have 15 full songs in my head: guitar parts, bass lines, drum fills, synths, percussions, strings, cello, oboe, clarinets, high distortion, fuzz, metal, funk, acoustic, sax, tubular bells. Everything has been in my head for years. Different situations have pushed me away from getting my own band and recording. A few weeks ago I said “f*ck it” andd decided to do it myself, completely, using DAWs, and playing all instruments I can myself. I know I’m not Prince but I won’t wait to be 80 to start complaining about not accomplishing my dreams.

I’ve my fair share of full songs in my head that I’ve been sitting on for years. With the way the internet has given us small timers a shot at putting out our own music without having to deal with record labels, I’ve been considering doing the same thing you’re doing. I have an MPC Live 2 with a number of the plugins and expansions, I have Logic Pro X and a considerable amount of VSTs, and I have Ableton (though I don’t really use it), as well as Pro Tools and Melodyne. I might as well make something to put on Bandcamp and streaming even if it’s just to say I put some music out. I wish you success with your endeavors and I hope to get my stuff out as well. Not only do we share the same mission but we also share the same last name, lol.

I like this because - well one: it's accurate and two: they're not talking about Prince as "a genius".
They're talking about his work ethic, which was basically second to none.
It's true that he would work non-stop for 3 or 4 days with no sleep, crash out then wake up and do it again. You'd have to learn every song he regularly played, rehearse for a show, do the show, then do an aftershow.
And he'd do things like wait until you'd memorised everything, and change it at the last minute.
He was basically horrible to work for :D and he could be quite a nasty, manipulative shit until later in his life when he became more religious.
The music is only one side of Prince as well, you had the choreography, the media releases, the fashion, the implementation of new technology (the first video I watched on my PC was a Prince video, "Interactive" I think - from a CD on a magazine cover. And he was the first major artist to sell his own music on the internet - but distribution was a problem (Crystal Ball CD).
Then there was the legal and business side of things, he got out of his atrocious recording contract with Warner Brothers, and still managed to survive whilst running a multi-million dollar recording complex: Paisley Park.
The man was a fucking beast.
I mean...................... came from nothing, worked harder than everybody, was better than everybody, never let anybody put him down, didn't crumble under mockery or critisism..... was altruistic (donated money to charities under the condition they didn't tell anybody).
Then he had a quite tragic personal life - with all of the normal things that will happen to people, and that are traumatic.
I really don't think there are many people in the history of the world, that compare to him. James Brown did............. he had recording companies and all that, he worked hard.
I like the comparison to Mozart, I think that's fair and accurate - a person of extraordinary ability, output and clearly outstanding, in their chosen field.
Maybe somebody in the Roman Empire, would out do his work rate............. maybe..... Michalangelo in the art world.......... Tesla in science.........
    But Prince, in music.
    And he was funny, too.
    Man, I loved him.

If you read or hear what past members of his band say about him, James Brown was nothing like this. He was no composer, he basically put everybody else at hard work and then claimed credit for their ideas. Great performer and dancer, really passionate and hard working, with an ego the size of the northern hemisphere, but nowhere near as creative as Prince.

I will say, while the constant drive to produce (which is also work) is impressive, Prince died at a young age, and in a way that feels aligned to a state of overworking / constantly performing.
Also, putting a bed in a studio doesn't mean you value sleep, it is an act of overworking. In Hong Kong, people bring sleeping bags to the office, and I wouldn't say that means they value sleep.

Nah, the whole "candle burns twice as bright burns half as long" thing doesn't apply to humans, we are organic beings with self regenerating capacity, all we need is energy to heal. I can list off tons of prolific artists who lived to their 80s and 90s. an artist cannot overwork, because he/she is working for themselves, that's very different from someone overworking for another person, this creates a different stress profile that will definitely slowly kill you.
There's a huge difference between forcing yourself to work hard and hustle to meet the expectations of others, versus just flowing in perpetual creativity for no purpose other then to enjoy life.
Some examples of long living artists: Alejandro Jodorowsky, David Lynch, Elton John...

yes, working for 8 hours a day, only put up work once every 6 month, Rehearse for only 5 minute a day,
is how you become a Normie.
yes you will have balance in life, but you'll also die in a markless grave as if you never exist in the first place.
clearly people who criticize him was a nobody,
while he is cemented in the History as a Legend,
someone who will be remembered even 1000 years from now, he was immortal
leave people with their way of life alone, it's not anyone place to judge, mind your own business.

      I like that!
Sounds like Prince- as described by his Peggy, and Susan Rogers 2 of his former recording engineers,- was a hyper creative. His head was constantly flowing with ideas and concepts for his music. So to get them out of his head and put them in a recorded song format, he had no time to overthink amd rework stuff, he wasn't like a Steely Dan, who would spend all day retwerking over a minor detail, taking them an entire week to do half a song, (that was their approach which worked great for them) but for Prince, imperfection and minor mistakes that came out afforded him to see a new musical landscape that he would work with during the process and he would build around them and include them. A poet, he saw these mistakes as real human expressions. And real humans make mistakes all the time and so to him, it was an artform all unto itself. And so he kept them in there.
A famous bass player once said that is what made him stand apart from the rest. It was so refreshing for her to work with him because he kept it moving. Play it, leave it in there and let's not waste too much time fussing with it because we will lose out on other opportunities coming our way.
Thus it was typical of him to record several different versions of one hit song. Each one was just as fabulous, and unique within itself as the original. I know of no other recording artist who does that!! Not on his level anyway.
Usually they may take the best version of that song and discard the others. But not Prince. He kept each one.

A song a day for five years? That's unbelievable! Prince was a music-producing machine!!!

    • @leeharrison8222
      @leeharrison8222 Před 13 dny +2

Naw, Prince wrote a song a day for the five years that his engineer Susan Rogers worked with him. He wrote songs prolifically for essentially 40 years, starting at least as early as 1976. Cat Glover, his dancer/backup singer from 1986-1988 estimated Prince had approximately 2,000 songs in his vault at Paisley Park. And that was in 1988! 😳That number reflects the first 10 years of his output. He kept writing and producing music, and releasing albums for another 28 years--until early 2016. That's why I personally estimate his lifelong output of songs is much closer to 8,000 than 2,000 (the number I see most often cited in articles about him).

This video is Electric!!!! I’m a huge Prince Fan and I really miss the Brother. I got advice from him and this video will be my companion to his advice to me as an Artist. Back in the 90s I worked at a insurance company and I had a supervisor who believe came straight from the depths of hell..😅 Dig it Prince and NPG were going to be at Tower Records here in New York. And this Supervisor knew how big of a fan I was of him. I asked for the day off even offered to work extra overtime to make up for the day off so I could go to Tower Records to meet him. Well that Demon denied me the day off and laid threats of termination. So my cousin went but unfortunately couldn’t get me an Autograph because they were only signing one per person. Dig what my cousin did When he met Prince he said.” Prince my little cousin Drew loves you and inspires to be an Artist like you. What you give me to bring back to Drew? “… He said Prince leaned back in his chair cane in hand and said.. “ You tell Drew I said just be Cool..” Blew me away when my cousin told me . Well I’ve been cool ever since. I was blessed to see him a number of times live , I was even at the Purple Rain tour back in the 80s. And Recently Was able to purchase an Autograph picture which has a great story to it. But I will save that for next time.. please keep up the the fantastic content.. Inshallah and Peace…

They, Journey, gave Prince their blessing of course. No problem.
Purple Rain is Prince's crossover hit, he was going for that mainstream rock audience, and so it mimics the SPIRIT and power ballad rock of 'Faithfully'.
