An Instructive Karpov Caro-Kann (after a bad Nimzowitsch)

- Two 15’+15’’ training games. The first was a short Nimzowitsch Defense gone wrong for my opponent, but the second one was an interesting Karpov Variation of the Caro-Kann.
My opponent blundered a piece early on in the first game and I should have won much sooner. I missed an easy tactic though which could have won on the spot (Bb5+ instead of Be2), and I even missed a check which forced me to trade queens off. But still, piece up, I converted easily.
The second game was way more interesting. It was a Nd7 Karpov in the main line of the Caro-Kann. My opponent misplayed the opening slightly, but played well after that and we got an equal position. I isolated his d4 pawn which gave me a structural edge, but the game was still far off from that being important. He had active pieces on the board and I had no real plan. He was the only one creating any threats but my position was solid.
I found a good plan of locking down the queenside structure (which he allowed without a fight) which then gave me much more time to play in the center and seize the initiative. My opponent’s reaction was pretty rash and bad. He decided to sacrifice his bishop for an imaginary attack. It didn’t work really. I took the piece and won a couple of moves later.
The tournament I’m playing starts in two days! Tomorrow morning I’m traveling to Slovakia and I’m arriving a whole day early. I usually come right before the first round so I’m always tired, but this time I’ll be rested! The first (out of seven) round is on Thursday afternoon, and then two rounds will be played per day until Sunday.
I can’t say if I’ll be able to record my games there because my connection might be bad and I doubt I’ll have too much time with all the preparation I’ll have to do. I will do my best though and I hope the games are interesting!

It's always fun to hear the thought process of a chess player. Interesting and instructive. Thanks!
Thanks for another training game, very interesting and instructive. Best of luck for Thursday :-)

Thank you for sharing. May your focus be strong, and may your play be error free during the tournament.
When in doubt, play sensible chess.

Please make a video on how to spot chess tactics.
8:03 Isn't Bb5+ winning his bishop after knight blocks ?
i realize it is kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good place to stream new series online ?
@Marvin Cristiano Try Flixzone. Just google for it :)
@Marvin Cristiano lately I have been using flixzone. You can find it by googling =)
I also play Karpov variation regularly and I always play Bd6 on the 11th move. It is a much more testing variation for white and more exciting for black. For example, when white follows naturally with Bg5 you play Qa5! threatening to take Bxf3 winning a peace. So white usually follows with Bh4 or Bxf6. The whole idea behind Qa5 is to castle long and prepare an attack on the white kingside especially if white Bishop takes on f6 thus opening the g file for you. I've had great success with this variation of the Karpov and I believe Bd6 is the more challenging move for white to face.

Stjepan I was wondering whether you were planning to do a video on the allgaier gambit on the King's gambit series. At the beginning of the series you said it was going to be 10 videos long so I assumed the tenth video would be about that variation. But I cannot find it. Thank you for your time, I know it is limited.
In the second game, on move 23, was it not possible for White to take the Knight with the rook and then play Bishop to b4, winning back the Exchange?
Can u please make a video on benoni defense and under which theory is it played?
Instead of 5. Nf3 why not 5.d5 Nxe5 6.c5? His opening was dodgy to say the least.
that bugging also happened during my winning game and had the game drawn when it got back. silly
7:40 12.Nxe5! was the right move. It's all about pattern recognition.
I know this is late but at 17:26 you could've just taken his knight on f3 and ruined his kingside.
Stepan whats your fide rating?
You should filter the games for longer time controls
I always play Qc7, stopping Bf4 in the Karpov position in 17:27
1st game u missed Nxe5 giving up the queen temporarily
