    • @andrewgeissinger5242
      @andrewgeissinger5242 Před 11 měsíci +5

      I agree that it probably would have been better if social security hadn't invested the payroll tax surpluses in treasury bills through which the government borrowed the money in the trust fund. However, something would have still had to be done with that money. What do you think the alternative should have been? In my opinion, they should have invested the surpluses in the stock market, perhaps in a broad-based market index like the S&P 500 for example. Investing in an index like the S&P 500 would have avoided most of the risk and also would have minimized management fees since it doesn't take much investment expertise to do that. You just buy the index. What are your thoughts?

      Social Security is in essence, a Ponzi scheme with one difference: everybody is forced to pay into, and they have no choice. People should be allowed to opt out, forfeit any future SS benefits, and invest their own retirement money the way they want. The problem with the entire system is that people are not having enough kids to keep it afloat. Essentially, the younger generations are currently being forced to subsidize socialism for the boomers, and by the time they're at the age they can start reaping in benefits from SS, the dollar price would have been highly inflated and the increase of SS benefits not increased to a competitive level; furthermore, the younger generations, who are non-productive would not have paid in nearly enough to make the entire system viable. Same story with Medicare/Medicaid.

      It's interesting to note our national debt is largely owned by Americans in the form of public and private retirement funds, social security and Medicare (programs we pay into), state and local governments, our financial system to include the Federal Reserve and support for the US dollar. We owe a little over $1 trillion to China and another $5 trillion to other countries. As a consequence of massive monetary easing the Fed currently owns about $6 trillion which, by the way, is earning interest and profits are remitted to the US Treasury. Our debt is largely a measure of our economic wealth and power rather than a time bomb. Our debt is wealth for someone. However, the original debt ceiling in 1917 was only $11.5 billion. That's clearly not enough today.
      So, it always goes up. Possibly more than it should because we give large tax deductions and loopholes for the wealthy, not available to those earning an income, and some corporations pay no tax at all often by offshoring their money. Still, to fund the government and grow the economy (infrastructure, etc.), we prefer to borrow at interest from those who have it rather than tax it never to be seen again. Our debt spending moderates the increasing wealth gap providing higher paying jobs than many blue collar jobs surviving paycheck to paycheck along with our credit cards in the private sector. That's good for the once vibrant middle class, and spending works through the private sector to generate taxable income and revenue for US companies.

I saw it first hand working for FAA for 30 years. 4th quarter came around and they begin their frantic spending so every last penny of their budget was spent, because if not next years budget would be cut accordingly. This occurs throughout all government agencies.

      The main issue is when politicians talk about science without context or understanding at all of the outcome. Cutting spending across the board may be ok, there's plenty of waste in a lot of areas. We should start with removing red tape and consolidating oversight bodies and limiting how far regulation can go where its detrimental to the economy such as in development approval. We should be spending vastly less on infrastructure and we could while maintaining even better quality if we just adopted more similar regulations as Europe. Streamlining and consolidating could likely balance the budget on its own without anyone sacrificing anything, and many actually gaining.

      The military is so critically undermanned right now. Many have so many jobs (the work hasnt gone away, but the people have) they aren't even trained for in addition to the one they are trained for. Result is nothing gets done right and they end stinking at their primary job due to pencil whipping requirements or, even if they do train, it is half ass because they are smoked from all the nonsense.
      I would love to know where the money is going. Not to people. .

I fully believe that Blackrock is capable and intends to crash the market in the greatest wealth distribution this country has ever seen. The boomer generation is the largest generation we will ever see in our lifetime. There is no way that Blackrock is not going to capitalize on the opportunity to redistribute that wealth to them. They probably figure it would all go to nursing homes anyway.

      Rand Paul is a hypocrite that doesn't understand many aspects of the world. The thing about libertarian politicians is that they are good at pointing out problems, but awful at giving a solution.
      For example, Rand Paul would be anti FEMA in natural disasters when other states, especially blue states get hit with a disaster. But when his state is hit, he asks FEMA for money and resources. He does get it because everyone else aren't assholes in withholding FEMA to states that need it. Not to mention Kentucky, the state he represents is a net spender, meaning they take more in federal spending than they pay in federal income taxes. So, Rand Paul. He is a hypocrite like other politicians.

      That's irresponsible. They must have a majority consensus when they set a budget. They already voted for the budget, and have already accumulated the debt in the process of funding it. You can't allow the bills that they agreed to, to pile up and then suddenly decide you're simply not going to pay them!!-- especially when refusing to do so, will cause financial catastrophe for private citizens, who must rely on government funding to survive (ie, social security recipients, people relying on Medicare & food stamps, etc). Remember, many of these people already paid into these programs through decades of paycheck deductions (and by no choice of their own)...why should they starve or lose their homes just to make a political point?? Rand Paul is right...but only in part. There are TWO ways to do this: one is to make cuts in spending; the other is to increase revenue through taxes & fees. I'm a Republican so it probably sounds shocking....but our deficit increased by 25% under Trump in large part because he was cutting taxes (money to the Treasury) for popularity & to gain short-term economic growth in consumer spending, but that escalated the shortfall we have now. Some of those tax cuts need to be dialed down.. and we need wealthy Americans and corporations to pay a fair share instead of allowing them to tap out once a certain cap has been paid for the tax year. If we did a combination of both cutting spending and raising revenue, we could put our budget on track. But nobody wants to take on the problem of addressing it because they're too scared of losing voters.
