What about the gender workplace hours gap?

  • The Workplace Gender Equality Agency has a lot of work to do on its statistics following Senator David Leyonhjelm's questions in Estimates. The agency publish a gender pay gap based on ABS data, but they don’t account for the fact, revealed in the same ABS data, that male full-time workers tend to work longer hours than female full-time workers.

Its a resonable figure to look at when discussing earnings but it doesnt actually mean anything when talking about a wage gap. If the female employee works 7h and the male employee works 12h they should be PAID roughly the same per hour but the man would EARN about twice as much

I tried making this argument to a woman who claimed she wasn’t a “feminist”. It was pointless. She kept repeating the rhetoric of “77 cents on the dollar” yet when I brought up different occupations, education levels, hours worked between men and women - even cited or showed examples of WOMEN themselves backing the argument (ala Ronda Rousey pay gap clip) - she would keep repeating “where are the stats”. I showed her the stats and it still didn’t matter.

Annualising part times rates to full time rates presents a false picture - which they are well aware of - and hourly rates , which are the basis for all wage calculations across the business spectrum correctly show that a gender pay gap does not exist.

This is why EVERY social science should have an intermediate stats course as a pre-requisite. Not some "easy" Calc I course, but the kind of math that scares Comp-Sci majors. If you can't create an ANOVA* table by hand, you don't get to make up "research".
*ANalysis Of VAriance. It's actually quite simple to create, if a bit tedious, but everyone who goes into probability/stats learns how to do it. It's good for quickly understanding how well your model fits the data, which variables are good predictors and which are just noise, etc.

@Peter Simpson Marcus Garvey was wrong. RazorBladeKandy was white. Chinweizu synthesized both their ideas but it was Rollo Tomassi who perfected them. His text The Rational Male currently has far more appeal than the myriad of black nationalist literature already in circulation. It so happens that he published it the same year Tommy Curry challenged the fantasy of male privilege, referring to being a black male as a death sentence .
His The Man Not however was not the first text to address the shortcomings of fem-centric pan-africanism. Nor was his recent 'Decolonising the Intersection' despite highlighting his attempts to emphasise the role of misandry in black female thinking. Chinweizu (Anamtomy of female power) and Shahrazad Ali (The Black Mans Guide) also made similar efforts but it was George Subira (1992) who hit the mark .
Unlike Chinweizu, Subira did not draw upon Esther Vilar's 1976 classic, The Manipulated Man. Unlike most disciplined minds, Subira was an original thinker and one of the first to advocate a programme of economic leadership. Most modern black rhetoricians can offer no such programme or agenda because they are largely victims of black female programming. Their minds were long domesticated meaning they are reduced to reproducing aimless echo chambers almost every time they talk.
Neely Fuller (1957) was not hostage to such conditioning but his programme seems to have a key fault. Despite realising the incredible driving motivating force of sexual expression , he still managed to downplay it's role, especially how it compares to the larger logic of antiblackness and global white terror domination. Although Charles Mills (1997) did indirectly develop his ideas, he neglected to integrate the foundation his own work borrowed from, "The Sexual Contract." (1996)
Neil Postman, like Jeff Schmidtt, was one of the few people capable of making sense of these divergent ideas (much like John Gatto and Jan Matthews were two of those rare individuals with the pieces of the puzzle.) Conventional panafrikanism doesn't even realise there is a jigsaw to be solved. It has a distorted conception of itself because it views the world through a damaged lens incapable of accountability and self-reflection.
PanAfrikanism will not produce any quick results either because unlike Chinweizu, Subira and Curry, it still refuses the interrogate and recognise the role of women in sabotaging the afrikan agenda. Texts like Addicted to White work towards this, only, in this age of intersectional confusion and fragmented voices in the wind, it isn't necessary to silence this perspective; it is enough just to drown it out. Jacques Ellul and Guy Debord surely foresaw this tragic arrangement, when few others could.
Men have been fooled, black and white. It is no longer a question of race-first but male first, if not black-male first at the very least. Men are going to have to muster the clarity and courage to challenge the corporate-feminine regime dominating their "emptied" lives. If anything is to be redeemed black thinkers will need to prioritise the black pill and realise that the fundamental question of what it means to be a woman is as urgent as the need to ask what it means to be white.

@UCgn3dvCtj6-c3opGdZYF0IA You make a good point, I am just not too sure if that is a good way to normalize the data. Generally speaking when an employee is full time, you do pay them more because they have more experience and can demand more pay. Part time employees usually do not have the level of experience that can command the same rate. A lot of full time employees started out working part time and then make the transition.
I would be more interested in seeing all part time workers annualized and then compared, also a comparison of all full time compared to just full time. Generally speaking part time employees are at the beginning of their career while full time employees are more established. Many people choose to always stay part time for a number of reasons, family, going back to school, etc. But it is hard to build a career if you just stay part time. Full time employees are also for the most part taking a bigger lead on bigger projects. Part time is generally speaking supporting the full time.
For some part time is a perfect compromise between financial wealth and mental wealth, for others it can be frustrating.

@@IronFreee essentially true. Our firm pays 40% of hours billed regardless of whether they are boy or girl. It doesn't matter. If the girl is only billing 1500 hrs a year and a guy is billing 2200 ... he's going to be paid more ... for the same work. In our firm, on average, our men bill about 22-25% more hours. Of course they get paid more, of course they advance faster, this is not brain surgery. Who do you pay more, the guy who brings in $1,100,000 in revenue, or the woman that is bringing in $900,000 per year. That's obvious. Moreover, the unpaid hours spent rain making isn't even taken into consideration. In my experience the 'gap' does not exist. Same for paralegals and secretarial staff. Although, the comparison is tough because all of ours are women.

I believe the data shows that *any* employee, regardless of gender, shows a diminishing value added the higher the number of hours worked beyond certain thresholds, which are in turn dependant on the type of work being performed. ROI on OT is an internal issue for companies, and being gender neutral, falls outside the topic of the conversation being had.

Because most of the comments don't really seem to understand the argument that he's making or that they're making:
They are saying that they want women to receive the same hourly wages as men. They're annualizing the data, so looking at pay per ~2000 hours rather than pay per 1 hour. What his argument is, in short, is that part time employees are not necessarily deserving of the same hourly rate as full time, and they're saying that there is a 15% gap between men and women and that they haven't considered the effect of part vs full time work - they've actually factored it out mathematically. It's an argument about a factor that would likely slide the 15% closer to zero, but because there's no solid data, it's impossible to tell what the size of that effect is.

yip. It had nothing to do with the reason they were there. i notice women do this a lot. They aren't willing to admit they are wrong so they try and get you talking in circles. talk about unproductive sitting behind a desk.

It's not even about doing 12 hour days, the difference in hours worked between men and women in full time jobs is largely due to the amount of leave taken. On average, women work about 1 day less per fortnight than men in the same job.

This video shows why I could never be in politics. People can stare you straight in the face, knowing you are right, and just double down on manipulated data even when you call it out. It's pathetic. Science and data collection should be about finding answers, not nitpicked over to get the answer you want.

@@RussellDeacon No, it's different: she claims that, although men sits longer at their desk, their 12 hours of work is not productive, because after 8 hours you lose productivity. Which is true according to research, but she is bending this result to support her claim: it doesn't matter if you sit longer at your desk because you are as productive as 8 hours or work, so either you should pay more who sits there 8 hours or less (mainly women) or pay less who sits there longer than 8 hours (mainly men), which results into pay men less or pay women more. In the end all equality movements like Black Lives Matters or feminist end up in the same place: they are made of people who want money for free.

      @Godless_Guru Před 3 lety +15

Basic business. If you could pay women less, you would only hire women.
Problem with that is most men would be unemployed, mostly men would be at home taking care of the kids while the woman works for less than her partner would have made for doing the same job... but that’s not the world we live in, is it?
In reality things play out as if there’s no financial incentive for business to hire women over men, (which as I’ve said there would be if women were paid less than men for the same job) sooooo, you see where I’m going with this?
If these lady’s are anything to go by, possibly not 😅

My company certainly does. There's a fairly even split between female and male employees here and an incredibly heavy skew towards men for overtime hours worked. Some of these guys don't even bat an eye at constantly working 70+ hours a week
