Making a fake window using three 50-inch TVs and basic tools. I start by placing the TVs together on a plywood base and drill holes according to the TVs' mounting screw locations. To hold the TVs, I construct a frame from Baltic birch plywood, reinforced with butt joints and pocket hole screws. The central plywood piece is inserted into the frame through rabbets that I cut using a track saw. I use a French cleat system to wall-mount and add curtains for a window effect. I also created a box to conceal all the wiring and electronics. Finally, I use a video wall controller to make the three vertical TVs work as one. This creates a realistic window that brings the illusion of the outdoors into the room.

Has the day come where it's cheaper to buy TVs than lumber huh?
I chuckled. Thanks.
When he said 'baltic birch' I thought, "Oh man here we go. What's next? The gold chains and Rolex?"
Go back to that scene in Pulp Fiction when The Wolfe asks Jimmy "If he's an 'oak man'" when offering to buy him a new bedroom set. If I were Jimmy, I would have said, "I'm more of a 13-ply guy." I bet The Wolfe would have told him to not get too carried away with his generosity.
Probs. Especially if the tv is like 2 years old.
Your attitude makes me smile Dave. I'm very happy that your leaning into making these videos with that spirit. Thank you.
Many people hate the claustrophobic feeling of basement living, particularly where basement apartments are concerned. This is a great solution to psychologically trick the brain to remove that "living in an underground hole" feeling.
This is such a cool project, David. I heard about this project on the podcast and couldn't wait to see it
Awesome job. I didn’t realize I needed one of these till now… Thanks for the new project😂
Love this! You could add some wooden slats down the frame to hide the bezels and make it look more like a multi pane window.
Pretty obvious. Surprised he didn’t. It almost works but it lacks that last piece de resistance
Thank you for continuing build videos. Many others have given in to the affiliate link and sponsor game.
Sweet build! I built a desk/table with a similar monitor setup but I did a small mullion in between to cover logos and the gap. Then fortunately had a pc with a proper graphics card to avoid the output matrix fight. As always great work!
My man!!!! I was totally gonna do this in front of our kitchen sink since we don't have a window there, but I wussed out. This helps a ton! Thank you so much David. Keep on kicking ass dude!
Cool project that looks great! Unnatural nature is better than no nature. And big digital displays are just cool. Thanks for sharing!
Fun video ! Can you please edit yourself onto the screens super big like King Kong looking in the window and play it in the background of a future video and take no notice of it at all. Comments section would be pretty funny. Also just wanted to say thanks for all the videos. You have been inspirational to me to make stuff over the years and now to start making CZcams videos ! So thanks !
Great idea! Ha! And thank you! ♥️
This idea is 🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂
Great project but did anyone else notice what happened to the Air Conditioner. :)
Beautiful work, Dave! It looks incredible!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Your voice is so lovely, especially when you hit those high notes
Looks so good Dave!!
Awesome as always!
It’s pretty much becoming cheaper to cover your walls with TVs rather painting them 😂
Great project David. I’ll keep saying it you could make anything and I’ll watch it your channel has always been personality’s based. We are here for you.
I appreciate this!
Great build! God bless you and yours! Praying for you!
Something I’ve always wanted to do! Sweet build 👊🏽
This was always a good way to bring nature into a basement. Make it not so gloomy.
You’re a stud. Great content and inspiring for my builds.
You could add some fancy routed wood framing with some glass even over the bezels to look like a "victorian sash window" and it would look even more real
My favorite game is guessing what movie/tv show David is watching while building.
Awesome build! I was excited to see if after it was teased on the Making It podcast.
Beavis and Butthead Do America!
This is such a cool build and i find seeing how your transforming your shop into what you want is inapiring. My shop is very utilitarian but as i have been adding more desorative elements its made it a lot more enjoyable.
Thank you!
What a lovely project!!! Now, i want to do it for my home!
Such an amazing idea and project!
Did something similar years back for a Holiday sales company. Had the sea washing up over the beach behind fake sash windows. Back in the day before 4k so the resolution was not great but the effect was .....effective. Biggest problem was allowing for the gap they wanted between the 'windows'. Great build. Enjoyed that
Awesome build!
Thank you for inspring me to do to my new house
Flashback to "Total Recall", Schwarzenegger version!
Excelent project 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
So very cool it looks great
this is dope, you and drew builds stuff should do a video on the window tvs
So cool!
Very nice build on the frame. For the electronic side you could just plug the TVs directly into any PC with three HDMI ports and tell Windows they are vertical. It would be cheaper and you get higher resolution.
Great video. Cool project. Mahalo for sharing! : )
7:38 when I built French cleat cabinets into a van, so many people told me they were just going to slide around while we drove. Thanks Dave for demonstrating in this moment why they never did.
Awesome project bud. Super fun!
Ha! Thanks Keith!
lost for words Great build love this project
I have TOTAL RECALL of this kind of thing before. Yep, it was somewhere around the year 1990.
This was a fun one!!! 🎉🎉🎉
I watched your chair video the other day where you mentioned being a big fan of Ryan Trahan. I dig the subtle nod to him with your ‘The Game Plan’ sequence!
Great eye! Thank you!
That is very cool!
Great job,like that
That's an awesome build. I wanted to do something in my last shop, but since we just moved to Italy a month ago that will be put on hold for 2 years lol. Heard about it on the podcast, but think it turned out better than I even pictured (pun not intended)!
Definitely looks cool!!! 🤙

0:30 famous last words 😅
Nice upgrade would be to hook it up to a local camera - just to get the weather and the rising and setting of the sun displayed.
Super Cool !!!
I love the workmanship. Great job. I've been experimenting with making a 1:3 portrait video wall for about a year now. I'm surprised that a 4k video stretched across what is now about a 110 inch display looks good enough from a few feet away. My most recent experiment was with a matrox quadHead2Go box and a single portrait tv to see what it would look like with 3. I was not happy at close range so I abandoned that and am now working with 3 32" displays. But if you are happy with it I may rethink my project
Might be cool to actually have a camera oriented outside that you could project live footage from your own property onto TV if you wanted?
Saw that video lol. It was cool diy racing sim wall with outside vision.
Cool!
Maybe hang the curtains higher so it looks more like a window? Weird that the top edge of the curtains are right at the top edge of the window. Also, maybe add framing around to make it more like a window?
This is yet another cool build. Not a big commenter on here, but wanted to say you have been crushing it
Thank you!!
Looks brilliant. Great to see you channel your inner creativity, you’re really switched on 😁
I’m here for the 70s (80s?) paneling.
Great video, maybe one of your best!!

The end result looks great! I wonder if the light from the LED TV's can actually help with some seasonal depression that sets in during the winter months.
That is so cool, you have just got me in trouble with the wife. Lol😂
Damn Dave! You must really be terrified of your router table or dado stack LOL!
With the power buttons you could cut the switches off and solder on more wire and link them all into a single power switch.
Loved this project. I wonder if it would make it lighter/cooler if the screens were removed from the plastic boxes?
I am going to try this weekend to remove the frames
Bonjour, c'est superbe !
As an AV industry vet, I’d point out that, technically, you should buy TVs that specifically state they’re designed to be hung in portrait orientation. If not, they’re much more prone to overheat and you’re voiding the warranty. But that would probably at least triple the cost of your project. Awesome build!
Wait.. can you elaborate? Why would orientation change the fan? Just from rising heat?
@@AnthonyLoPrimo Correct. A lot of the cooling is passive, designed for the heat to rise away in a certain direction. When you turn the display, it may cause heat to dump right into sensitive components and shorten their lifespan. It was way more of an issue on older sets, but it can still cause issues.
@@AnthonyLoPrimo as someone who just has access to google, I’d point out that, there’s nothing online to substantiate the claim that mounting any tv vertically will make it more prone to overheat lol
@@jacksonalesna6313My man 😂😂
@@jacksonalesna6313you don’t need google, just knowledge in thermal dynamics. If the vents are at the top of the TV then it may not vent properly. BTW your google kung fu is pretty weak considering I found several provisos as the OP outlined.
I was wondering if you still have your mini metal lathe? if so are you satisfied with it and is there anything that it can't do that you wish it could? Are there any accessories that you wish you purchased immediately?
very nice
I wonder if something like dakboard could be used with multiple monitors? I know they run on raspberry pi but they only have 2 hdmi outputs so that could limit the capabilities. Awesome project!
Your brain is working overtime these days…..awesome project Dave. 👍
Great build, but where did the AC unit go?
Nice build! Thanks for sharing all the ways you can't make the TVs work together! Just buy a bunch more TVs and make more fake windows in the orientation that those other boxes work. 😂
*_I forget what it's called, is it parallax? You can (easily) make the screen sync with your camera(PC needed), so it looks more real. Like how The Volume works on The Mandalorian._*
Now place a camera on the other side of the wall on the outside and connect it to the big ah screen window to have an actual window without ppl being able to look inside😂
The“Insignia” logos are a little annoying but overall it is very good!
A project like this is almost worth boarding up the windows in my Living room 😂
the matte texture on the screens makes the reflections look non-window like. More glossy screens might add further realism.
Okay, I need this in my office/den. Now I just have to convince my wife that I need it. 😂
Were you able to get a true 6k resolution with that HDMI splitter? I have a TV matrix at the office (8tvs, 4x2, 32:9), we had to use multiple pieces of encoding and decoding hardware to handle that many TVs and those cap out at a 4k combined resolution, looks rough up close.
This is definitely on my building-list for my basement here in Canada! Especially for winter!
Real nice. I wanted to do this for a gaming room later down the line. But I plan on using only one bug screen, the triple solution here is not really my cup of tea. But great nontheless.
I know part of this was using cheap tvs, but have you seen some of the new tvs these days? I'm not talking about the screen quality, but how thin they have made them AND how they've improved the way they mount them on the wall. Someone I know recently got a new tv and got one that is so thin and so close to the wall that if you put a frame around it and set it to display a single image and mess with with image and brightness settings it would pass as a large framed photo or painting.
It would be way more expensive, but I could see some people using those types of tvs to make some fake windows that are also still very usable as a tv, or if they go the hard route they could make it look like a photo when not in use. It isn't my tv so I don't know how much the built in settings allow you to change the brightness and if you could ever reduce it enough to make it look like a convincing photo or painting but making it look like a window would be super easy.
Привет! Очень оживляет атмосферу в глухих комнатах без окон. Спасибо!
Thanks for the video. Quite helpful. Please advise which software program you are using or that you recommend that shows the scenery and the views. I would love to find a solution that can switch scenery and is also sync'd to the time of day.
Where did your A/c go in the final shot?
What would happen if you put edge banding on the black frames of the tvs
That's crazy haha
3:45 Pocket screws work best if you run them in away from the edge of the receiving piece..
4:33 Just to show that I'm not some sort of know-it-all troll (I actually do not know it all - at 47 a guy should know his limitations.. lol), I want to give huge props for showing this technique. I've seen it done before (I think I've even done it). It's a super handy tip.
8:13 lol
Nice project. Thumbs up.
Can we set it up with all kind of smart tvs in any size to show vertical ? And how many tvs we can connect this way ? Max 3 or we can do more ?
I'm surprised you din't extend the wires so you could mount the on/off button underneath the frame. Doing that later on?
Was going to but had trouble finding the correct size 5pin cable needed to extend them. I could have soldered extensions but my soldering skills are not up to par.
You can get a new 75” for $600 at Costco . A decent window that size is $1000+
Why not cover the bezels with some wood to make it look like a window frame?
Need to frame it out
What happened to the mini split that was above the tv’s earlier in the video?
Where did the aircon unit go? 🤔
With a PC with a graphics card, could've utilised the 3 maybe 4 outputs.
Looks good tho 👍👍
Oh, cant you angle the top down a bit? Wouldn't get the reflections off your studio lights then 😉
Nice idea, Drew Builds Stuff will be proud 😉
Can you open the window for some fresh air? 🤓
This would be great for a pet playroom. Imagine building a window frame with this behind it playing CatTV or DogTV.
Very cool! And of course Apple would have to have the most expensive solution. Lol!
Question, after you spent all that money of TV and accessories. Wouldn’t it have been cheaper or perhaps similar cost to just buy a bigger TV and frame that?
Wasn't there an option to remove the bezels and replace them by smaller strips (of wood)? There would be even less of a bezel between the screens.
Multiple passes with track saw....but not with a router? Still, awesome project!
this is awesome. someone quoted me $17,000 for a printed scene with some borders and this could be done at a fraction of the price. Maybe I'll see if some handyman wants to take it on for me. thanks for the idea! btw, I'm sure you caught it on post edit but at 3:58 "it's heavy as AF" is "it's heavy as as F" double as.. maybe heave ass F? :)
