  • Spring cleaning of the XR650L carby, & making a few changes to the Honda XR650L jetting after checking the spark plug from the last trip, adding an extra 2" hole in the airbox, and the new Lexx exhaust, and removing the LOUD FMF power core muffler. Bike runs much better & quieter.

    VW - Awesome video & super nice bike for sure !!! - I love watching you work. I agree with DOC - don't want to piss of my DR LOL - Although not as sweet as yours, I am slowly getting "THOR" right where I want him. Keep us posted (like DOC said) with performance & mileage updates.
    And yes, looks like you were running a bit fat - Good call !!!!

      Hi OW, appreciate the keen eye on the spark plug reading. I’m thinking it’s going to be what the DOC ordered. If it’s rich at 1400 ft. leaving most directions from Phoenix would put it way over rich going up in elevation.
      The bike feels much better, and the Lexx muffler is quieter by a bunch.
      Great to hear from you brother, take care.

    Hi, yes, I am still happy with this jetting, the mileage is still not what the DR650 is but the bike rips. I am at 1400 feet, your jetting should be stock or a bit leaner at that altitude, I would say pull the snorkel in the air box and drill a few holes in the top of the air box first. Your bike is definitely starving for air, then if needed play with the jetting.

    I had my head ported a slip on Yoshimura Muffler ,but really need the bigger head pipe she's running a tad rich , but definitely going to buy a bigger head pipe and hopefully the rich cndition will go away. Before I had the head ported I could only hit 95 now she bouncing on the 105 mark . I really don't ride that fast on the street ,but on the dirt that is where she shines .It's night ,and day with that port job. You would not believe the throttle response from stock .The only thing I don't like is the gap in the gearing.

    Dave, Interesting! I am betting your mileage and performance have been greatly improved. As OBI- WAN says, "lean is mean". It will be great to see how your fuel mileage ends up. If I recall, you said you were getting about 35MPG. My DR was doing the same until I leaned it out with carby adjustments. it now gets about 40-50MPG depending on how I ride it. Also, I did the ProCycle mod to the airbox and it offers great performance, but it is affected by side winds due to the large hole in the top. I have worked through it by adjusting the air/fuel idle screw but it still is noticeable in high cross winds. I think it is a great call on just a 2 inch hole to allow more air without the issue above. What year is your XR650L and why does it have cartridge forks on the front? New XRs have "cartridge style" forks but they are not upside-down cartridge forks like yours. Great info and please stop making me want to pick up a XR! It will piss off the DR650!
    Cheers!

      Thanks for the tips and input DOC. I took it for a spin last night and it was noticeable quicker and smoother. The Lexx exhaust is nice and quiet and does not seem to effect performance from the noisy FMF muffler I removed. (Video coming on that,) if you go back in my videos I hit the lottery on a LOADED $1100. XR650L with tons of aftermarket parts that I put on mine, one being the RSW clamps and forks. In a strange twist, the CRF450 forks now on my XR650L are the same style Showa twin chamber forks that the DRZ400SM comes with and are on my DR650. The stock cartridge XR650L forks are worlds better than DR650 forks. I only did the swap because they were basically free. After I swapped all the trick parts over to my XR I sold the $1100 dollar XR for $2200. Which was basically stock at that point. Good hearing from you.

      If it’s never been tampered with it is under a metal plug. You have to use a small drill to make a hole in the plug and then screw a screw into the plug and pull it out.
      I’m sure there are videos on this. Hope that helps.

    What's considered good mpg's for this bike? Has anyone been able to squeeze 60+ mpg out of it?

    • @verbalwidget7267
      @verbalwidget7267  Před rokem +1

      Hi Suzy, my average is about 37 mpg and 42 mpg is the best ever just riding at 40 mph. I have had guys tell me they get in the 50 mpg range? my bike had a Dyno jet kit and the bike never ran correctly. I went back to Keihin jets and a slide that had not been drilled with the Dave's mods and it now runs great, but mileage is still 35 to 37. I tell people, my XR650 gets 35, the DR650 @45, and the KLR650@ 55mpg. The DR650 is easily the fastest. Thank you.

      @@verbalwidget7267 Interesting info & thanks. Hoping to get mpg numbers from someone who's tried a Lectron carb on any of those three bikes. Of course engine cooling becomes the problem when you're running lean.

    • @verbalwidget7267
      @verbalwidget7267  Před rokem +1

      @@suzyamerica4679 A Lectron carbs results would be interesting. XR650L is known to stick valves in the valve guides if it runs too hot for extended highway speeds. You definitely don’t want to run lean. I added the oil cooler and scoop to reduce temperatures to a more normal 250 degrees from 300 degrees that I was seeing before because as hot as it gets in AZ I did not want to risk top-end damage when I was running highway speeds.
      The DR650 comes with a huge oil cooler, the KLR650 uses water. Why Honda saw not to fit an oil cooler is puzzling since the XR400 came with a cooler.
