  • Here is a brief description of the mods I have done to my 2001 Honda XR650L dual sport bike. I have done the following mods.
    1) CARB MOD (00:00) - FCR-MX (OEM) carb swap
    2) GEAR MOD (02:40) - 2nd & 5th gear mods
    3) BATTERY MOD (04:44) - Replaced and relocated stock battery with new Shorai battery
    4) GAS TANK MOD (06:36) - replaced small stock fuel tank with Clarkes 4.7 gal tank
    5) FORK BRACE MOD (08:36) - Front fork brace
    6) EXHAUST MOD (09:44) - (complete FMF system including headers)
    7) DASH MOD(12:05) - Complete stock dash replacement with TrailTech Vapor dash
    If your interested in the CARB MOD I have other videos that give more detailed information regarding the options I have on it and the recommended jetting.

    The second gear is now closer to the 1st gear in terms of ratio. There was too much gap beteeen them IMO.
    The 5th gear mod is really the main driving force for doing to gear change. Changing the sprockets effects all the gears. If I changed the sprockets to get more speed on the top end in 5th, I would lose the snappy feeling of the low gears. This is a very noticeable mod and i highly recommend it especially if you're tearing the engine apart for other reasons

    by guesstamation I put his MPG around 30. XR650's don't do well with "over" jetting. I'm at 8'000 ft above sea level so I leave mine extremely lean and hacked up my airbox. The 5th gear replacement is really nice, I rode a couple hundred miles on I70 last summer at about 70mph. Anymore than 65-70 without wind protection is just madness. I also have a 1.5 inch lowering kit on mine because I'm short legged, long torsoed.

    Number one BEST mod requires a single purchase and one easy procedure! First you loosen then hoist the fuel filler cap about 24" in the air above the XR....next you push the remainder of XR out from under the hoist (you will no longe use this portion) Finally you carefully slide a brand new CRF450RL (sans original fuel filler cap) perfectly under the XR's cap danging in the air.....next you slowly and carefully lower the cap precisely into place! ...Trouble shooting tip....Some have found the XR's cap does not fit properly and then quick fix appears to be simply using the cap that came with the new CRF.? (who knew?) ..whew! Procedure complete! Now go test ride her! Pretty sure you will be deeply impressed with improvement across the board! MUCH better power and handling! Plus your wallet will now be much lighter as a side benefit! Might even lose weight yourself in the following days if you can no longer afford as much groceries and fast food etc after this upgrade procedure! ? If so it just means things will get even BETTER performance wise both on the road and the trail!

    Where did you get your gears at for the 2nd and 5th gear mod? Also, you say highway speeds are still good? as in you can comfortably cruise at 80mph (128kph)? How is your gas millage with the carb replacement and the exhaust? Great Video by the way! Really interested in some of these mods, especially the gearing change!

  • @BugCrush3r
    @BugCrush3r  Před 10 lety +1

    You could possibly cut the bracket and reweld it to bring it closer to the swingarm but you can't bend the bracket without the bracket or the guard hitting the tire. You could potentially have a tire failure or worst tire lockup if a rock or branch were to damage the bracket. The guard is only there to prevent chain lube from spraying all over. I wouldn't worry about sand otherwise they would have covered to whole chain.

Can you elaborate on tj 5th and 2nd gear mod and how it will benefit street usage?. Also with sprocket changes I would like to retain the original speedo and dash ashy. Any info on speeders drives for 17" wheels and different sprockets? I would appreciate your input. And now since you mentioned it I'm going to rhumpertalk right now! Any other clubs on the internet that would be beneficial would be greatly appreciated thanks John in VA

    Regarding the 2nd/5th gear mod, pardon my ignorance, but how is this mod different than just changing the front and rear sprockets? Don't you get the same result? Say I want to improve highway riding by making the gearing taller. I can go with a larger sprocket in the front or a smaller one in the rear or change both sprockets. Problem solved. How is this mod different or better than just changing the sprockets? Great video, by the way. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

      @wreckentexanmoto Před 9 lety

      The Honda xr650l hasn't change much over the last 20 years. And is intended for heavy mods and most off road use but can also make a reliable street bike but I would recommend something with fi for a dependable street bike. The klr comes more as an adventure bike but can be on par with xr. And if you want to spend a little more you can buy the ktm 500exc which will have a shorter life and more expensive parts but will give it back in enjoyment.

      The XR 650L has more suspension travel. Much better for dirt riding. If you plan to stay on the street or smooth dirt roads the KLR with 5" less suspension will work.

    Is it normal for one side of the exhaust to be blue and the other side to have no color?

      Maybe, maybe not. Check your compression, valve clearances and if good then i wouldnt worry about it. Use a lazer thermometer and check if the temps are pretty equal

    where did you get the black plastics?

    • @bugcrusher7401
      @bugcrusher7401 Před 8 lety

      I bought a black clarkes tank and I painted the side covers with krylon fusion paint. You can get this paint at most hardward stores. It comes in a spray can and fuses itself to the plastic so it is very scratch resistant.

    • @thelaughingman79
      @thelaughingman79 Před 8 lety +2

      +Brandon Edwards never paint the plastics. it'll look ghetto in no time. i see these "masterpieces" in my shop all the time and just end up lookin like a 300 dollar craigslist special.

    • @bugcrusher7401
      @bugcrusher7401 Před 8 lety +2

      +thelaughingman79 the fusion paint really works well. Its not like the other cheap paint, this paint fuses itself and looks great even after 2 years. Very high scratch and crip resitance. I highly recommend it.

      @BugCrush3r  Před 4 lety

      I'm not sure, it was not a common bike. I bought it off ebay. I remember them calling it an OEM carb.

    that rear tire looks bigger than stock. is it?

    • @BugCrush3r
      @BugCrush3r  Před 8 lety +3

      +MK116Alex yes its a Teraflex 140/80 Knobby that's DOT approved. I have to cut the little L bracket off the inside of the swingarm and remove the chain protector to fit this tire. Looks better without it. The tire is awesome and lasts quite a long time.

    I love this bike.Im on my 3rd one since 93.Have not changed since! Wonder why! They are HEAVY tanks for 6ft dudes and over.Ive done about every mod possible. forget cracking the engine with gearing BS.,No need to go internal unless you have to! just go with sprockets and get the right tires for your needs. Cheap and easy!!!

    • @markboza6215
      @markboza6215 Před 5 lety +1

      I would have to disagree with ya on that ,the stock xrl at 70 feels like the motor wants to jump ship not to mention it is tachin high, with the mod you get smother shifting and a over drive that drops your tach down resulting in less stress.
