    I admire you taking time to all this testing. To be an accurate test you can't have more than one variable at a time when comparing. You are using the FMF kit with a modified slide and that's not what the kit was made for so that's one variable. You noted you tested with 1 gallon and 5 gallons thats a 4 gallons variable which translates to 24-28 extra pounds so you introduced an error making the test invalid. They probably both work well you just have to decide which one to use.

  • @zrig1
    @zrig1 Před 7 lety +29

    Honestly, mixing kits and mods from different places will only cause you grief. The slide has nothing to do with idle. I know this contradicts another poster, but the slide does nothing until the throttle plate moves and creates a vacuum to lift the needle. Google how a CV carb works. There is a trick to adjusting the mixture screw, it is not always as simple as screwing it in or out based on what some one else says it should be. Your problem is the idle is too low (I know stating the obvious). Start by turning in mixture screw all the way in until it LIGHTLY seats and back it out 1 1/2 turns as a baseline. Start the bike and set idle to stock (1100-1200 I think) and let the bike get to operating temp. Now here is where your modded idle screw comes in handy. Turn mixture screw in until engine bogs a little, you'll hear it. Record how many turns you went in. Now turn mixture screw out until engine bogs a little and record how many turns that was. Turn mixture screw in half way between those two numbers and that should be your sweet spot. Rule of thumb: If mixture screw is turned all the way in and the bike does not stall, pilot jet is too large. If the screw comes out more than 2 1/2 to 3 turns before engine bogs, it is too small. Don't want to come out any more than three turns as that now puts it close to the thread limits on the mixture screw and it may vibrate out on you.

      This pilot screw is 160 which I feel is too big. I haven't tried putting the screw all the way in yet though. Maybe I can mess with it this weekend.

      The slide is what blocks the air when the engine is at idle. Thats extremely important. A fucked up slide will cause a fucked up idle.

    • @dougiequick1
      @dougiequick1 Před 5 lety +1

      Not necessarily true ...even slides MIGHT effect idle depending on carb ....cutaway angle for instance ? etc...might not be huge but there CAN BE significant overlap....not the needle though...I cant see that ever effecting idle

      @dougiequick1 Před 5 lety +1

      Actually that does not make sense to me....should be PLENTY enough air with out throttle opened widely...no? If the airbox is so restrictive to mess up idle circuit then idle is least of concern IMO!

  • @supercrew63
    @supercrew63 Před 7 lety +3

    So if you are rich at say,1/3 throttle, raise the clip one notch on the needle, which will lean it out a little bit .if it is rich at idle turn in mixture screw usually a 1\4 turn at a time. If it is rich at wot then main jet is too big

  • @supercrew63
    @supercrew63 Před 7 lety

    I used the Dynojet kit on my bike, It came with several different main jets, but you are correct about pilot jet and mixture screw. If you want to try plugging the holes in the slide, epoxy putty or JB plastic weld might do the trick,

As for your carb... that cheap factory mod was good enough.. looks like your into fuel mileage.. if you really need power .. pumper carb.. jet for elevation and your good to go.. on my 3 drink.. hope I am ahead of you

    I adjusted my idle a little bit. I have a dynojet kit and has worked great. My idle seems to run high when the bike is hot sitting at intersections. It also seems to ping alot before I added the carb kit. I think what was causing the ping was the T16 sprocket I have put in. The bike pings sometimes when really hot under load. Maybe time for a valve adjustment.

    • @FridaysTheBomb
      @FridaysTheBomb  Před 6 lety +1

      Frank Deckard i would use the kit over the daves mod only because you don't have to modify the slide. Not that it ever matters in the end, but I'd rather use the spring in the kit and have a slide hat hasn't been drilled. The pilot jet mainly effects your idle, so I would stick with the stock one unless you live at high altitude.

    • @FridaysTheBomb
      @FridaysTheBomb  Před 6 lety

      Frank Deckard oh you said pilot needle. The kit should come with a needle I thought? Shimming the stock one with a washer like the with the daves mod should work almost the same in my experience.

      Friday'sThe Bomb appreciate the response. The link in your info to the amazon one, people said it didn’t come with pilot jet just main jets. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t need to order anything else. I am bike ignorant when it comes to mechanics so I probably worded it wrong lol.

    • @FridaysTheBomb
      @FridaysTheBomb  Před 6 lety

      Some kits will come with a pilot jet but it may not be necessary. The way I understand it is the pilot jet controls fueling at startup and idle. Then you can fine tune the fuel coming through the pilot jet by adjusting the mixture screw. My motorcycle had with a 60 pilot and 160 main jet when I got it. So if you want to experiment with it I would suggest buying a 60, but don't go bigger than that.
      My startup and idle problems ended up being due to the fuel mixture screw being tuned wrong for a 60 pilot jet. The previous owner had the screw turned out 2.5 turns and all it took to correct the issue was changing it to 2 turns.

    Why do you have to drill the slide holes out bigger

    • @FridaysTheBomb
      @FridaysTheBomb  Před 3 lety

      The holes have some effect on how easily it moves. Making them bigger "lightens" the slide. It simulates using a lighter weight spring, like what you would get with a jet kit. Using a lighter spring is preferable to drilling the slide though, because it can be undone.

      Jet kit should do it. However, the lighter spring that comes with the kit will not work with a slide that has had the holes drilled larger, which is part of the daves carb mod procedure. If your bike is used, you should open up the carb and see if a previous owner did this modification.

    I just ordered FMF Powercore 4 and I don't know if doing Dave's Mod or the FMF carb Kit? Can anybody help me. Thanks

      @FridaysTheBomb  Před 6 lety +3

      Erinson Duran i would do the fmf carb kit if i could do it again. The daves mod will accomplish the same thing, but it will "damage" the slide, and you have less adjustability. The carb kit has a needle with an adjustable clip and a lighter spring.

    It's your slide..you need to buy a new one. Once its drilled, it's only good for Dave's mod.

    Dude, why don't you have tools in your tool kit?

    • @FridaysTheBomb
      @FridaysTheBomb  Před 7 lety

      +Leonard Hurst the little bag is torn in half. The strap inside is just holding my registration but anything else would probably fall out lol

      Well, having tools while on a road trip is a must but have you ever thought of buying a leatherman? Not the best tool but it will get you out of jams like this one.

    • @FridaysTheBomb
      @FridaysTheBomb  Před 7 lety

      Leonard Hurst i used to have a leatherman, those are super handy! on road trips i pack tools in a rollup bag. I've been strapping it to the outside of my gear, but I've been meaning to make a pvc tool carrier on the bike for permanent storage.

    This is why I leave things stock. When you tinker with things you end up messing something else up.

      Any "power gain" is marketing. These sort of mods just improve throttle response.
