Fiat 500 1.4L Non-Turbo Multi-Air Valve Box Unit Teardown.

  • After performing a tune up due to a rough & stumbling engine, it was discovered that cylinder 1 had a slightly stuck open intake valve, causing blow-back thru the throttle body.
    Removing the valve cover and then removing the Multi-Air Valve Box it was discovered that one of the hydraulic intake valve actuators was stuck extended out.
    Multi-Air Valve Box issues start at about the half-way mark.
    If you have any info about these issues, please leave a comment so that I can get back to you.

    A mechanic after my own heart. Mother in law bought a 2015 Dodge Dart 2.4L with Multi Air Codes on #3 cylinder within two weeks. I am confident there is a way to service these valves and solenoids despite the 'experts' claiming the whole unit must be replaced.

    That basically an hydraulic tappet. 16 of mine were stuck with slugde and gunk. I opened them all, cleaned with degreaser and charged with oil before assembling them back. No tickticktick since the first start up. Make sure to use fully synthetic oil and keep on your regular oil changes.

      After researching, I'm using Pennzoil Full Synthetic. I've read that different oils might cause an issue with the Multiair unit, but after closely watching and reading, most of the issues really seem to be dirty oil. Since I don't have a turbo, which really dirties the oil quicker, and I change oil every 3K miles, I believe that I'm good.

    Interesting video. Ref the actuator that was stuck....could it be normal hydraulic lock as the solenoid valve might be closed. I understand that there are tiny bleed holes in the multiair unit cover which if blocked can prevent the plungers for returning. Also prior to failure had the engine been tapping?

    • @paulday4763
      @paulday4763  Před 2 lety

      Prior to total failure the engine stalled and had trouble starting a few times. There was no engine noise once running. The bleed holes were clear on the old unit.

    What little wrenches did u buy to remove intake manifold so as to avoid cutting the tab? I have leaking seals to the sparkplug and I was told need to replace vc gasket too.

    • @paulday4763
      @paulday4763  Před 2 lety +3

      The top two outer ones can be reached from on top very easily. The rest need to be removed from below, even the upper center one. A 3/8" rachet with several different lengths of swivel extensions and the proper socket. The swivel extensions allow the socket to grip evenly on the bolts. It helps if you have someone on top reaching down and holding the long extension while turning from below.
      Once all the bolts are loose, push the intake manifold straight back as far as possible, being limited by wiring at the bottom by the starter.
      Valve cover and multiair unit can be wiggled out to the side under the tab. When installing the valve cover with new seals, I did pull up on the tab to give a little more clearance. No leaks, and the engine is running great. Watch for a follow up video.

    Hi, I have a problem with my Fiat Bravo II 2013 multiair 103kw. Occasionally I see the engine light and the car vibrates for a few seconds when throttle is applied. After a while, the vibrations stop and the car continues to run normally, but the engine light is still on. It is happening more and more often. The error is P1061.
    Do you think I need to change the whole Multiair unit?

      Really loved this video it was very informative….I was hopping you would show the rebuild as mine has the same issue as well…although less dramatic…P0303 Code..checked Coils & plugs ok..did compression and cylinder 3 is lower than the rest by some margin but not by half more like 3/4 low compared to full compression on the others…most thinking is either valve not closing properly…your explanation has been the closest to my thinking…how did you resolve the missing clip issue for the faulty multiair piston?

    • @paulday4763
      @paulday4763  Před rokem +2

      @@victorkuria8068 Never found the missing clip. Installed a new MAU along with new tuneup parts. Car ran rough at first. I believe that one of the intake valves became stuck open a little, creating backpressure in the intake manifold. After running rough for about 10 minute, the RPMs smoothed out and it's been running fine since.

      There's no way to repair/rebuild the Multiair unit that I know of at this time. I replaced the unit, bought from an online Fiat dealer for $1,200. Be sure to prime the unit with a hand oil pumper. Expect the engine to run very rough until all the air is worked out of the unit. Usually several minutes.
