The PERFECT Log Giving Me A HARD Time On The Sawmill - Milling Premium Logs For Our Barndominium

  • In this video, Greg chooses logs from our premium doug fir log pile to mill. He chooses ones that are pretty perfect looking logs, but end up giving him a hard time on the mill. Maybe it's because he tried to get two timbers out of a log that maybe should have just been one? He was still able to get a good timber and then turned the other timber into bonus material. Sometimes, the log doesn't want to give you two and that's okay. It was still a great day on the sawmill. In fact, it's the last day on the sawmill for about a month... the build prep for our barndominium - barnhouse - lodge - home has started!
    Did you know we are building our barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab last summer, we milled most of the lumber needed over this past winter and are now starting to prepare to put in another slab for our garage and the rest of the house.
    Here's the video where we share our change in plans and decide to turn our barn into our home:
    • EVERYTHING Had To CHAN...
    Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns and turn it into our home:
    • Why Do We Think WE CAN...
    ***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
    Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
    • Sawmill Cover Build - ...
    Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
    3 posts in the front
    4 posts in the back
    Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
    Longest beam is 28 feet
    Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
    It will have a 3 :12 pitch
    Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
    We have shared the entire build!

    Greg tried for two timbers in one of these perfect logs. It didn't work out and he even questioned if he was being greedy trying for two timbers. What would you have done? Would you have tried for two timbers or just have gone for one? This is the last time on the sawmill for the next month - building has begun! Hope you enjoy this video! 😁

    Howdy Gregg- you never know what a log will do when you open it up. I watched a 12x24 hand hewed timber being sawed right down the middle and waited for it to spring- couldn’t even tell it had been ripped. No telling how old that timber was. Loved the music 😄 God bless

      Hi, Paul- I prefer the ones that don’t spring 😁 One of the great things about milling is that every log is unique! Fun to open it up for sure! 😊

    I would try setting up a rotary laser level to help see where the cut would be before actually making the cut. You could set the blade height where you are planning the cut and then adjust the laser to the blade height. That would allow you to see exactly where the cut would be on the log and better see if it was going to work. It would take a little more time but might let you get more out of a log when it is questionable if the log will yield what you are hoping.
    Looking forward to the build. Wish I could come and help.
    Thanks for the video

      Hi, Mike- I have a fancy laser that would work for that. But that would take all the guesswork out of it 😁.
      You’re always welcome to come and help! 😊

      Oh, wow- that’s crazy! 200 years old?! Was it a barn or a house or? Sounds so cool!
      Perfect is rare- just like it when logs work out the way you hope for! Not always the case! 😂

    Most logs will make bowed lumber when you split the pith like that.

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Just a little disappointing when you have a plan and the log doesn’t agree with your plan 😁

    You don’t you use a bark router that mounts on the saw. Maybe they don’t make them for your machine?

    • @peterarmstrong8613
      @peterarmstrong8613 Před 2 měsíci +2

      Answering my own question. Very expensive accessory. Once you build your barnderminium you will be over milling logs. You are not planning to be a production miller.

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Hi, Pete- Those bark routers aren’t really set up for these Woodland Mills.
      And yes after this build it will go back to a hobby mill.
      It’s getting the job done though! 😁

    Those timbers will be OK your asking a lot out of milled lumber it is what it is

      Hi, David- As I’m starting to build- I am seeing some “is what it is “
      Pitch pockets
      Cracks
      Twist
      Gouges from equipment
      But all in all the Timbers seem to be in good shape. 😁

      Hmmm. I’m confused- it put you to sleep or it didn’t? If it did, sometimes you need a video to help you nap…as long as it’s a 47 minute nap! 😂

      You mentioned you are going to use SIPs for your roof structure? Have you done some research on sips about vapor/ moisture problems? I was considering using them before but found info about moisture getting into the osb layer and causing it to fail. I went with conventional construction. Not sure if they have figured out what was causing the problems…. just a heads up.

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hi, Michael- Yes, I am aware of the moisture problem with SIPs and spray foam. We are going with reputable companies and we are going to put an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) system that will monitor humidity. But it does worry me- it would be terrible if some kind of failure happened. 😞
